Nice Clothes, but Poor Service…read more I stopped in to find special-occasion dresses. They were out of our sizes, so I asked if there was a way to be alerted when new stock arrives. The manager's response: "No. People just know to come in at the start of the season." I asked when that would be, and she said, "August and February." We need dresses sooner, so I apologized but asked if she knew where else I might find them. She gave a tight smile and said, "No, there really isn't anywhere else around here that sells high-end. You'd need to look online." I left, walked east on Broadway for 30 seconds...and ran right into Sparkle and Junebug, which has beautiful, well-made children's clothes. I found several dresses with the help of a friendly and efficient sales associate. It's impossible that the Babes on Fourth manager didn't know about this neighbouring boutique. Maybe she just didn't want to send me to a competitor, but she lost a potential customer and a significant sale as a result. (As Julia Roberts would say, "Big mistake. Big. Huge!")

And it was quite a nice store. Staff was also friendly but didn't greet you when you walked in. More like as you passed them on the way out. But. It's not a huge store. The store itself is small, but makes good use of its space, with separate girl and boy sections, as well as being organized by size (age). There is a growing selection of organically sourced clothing, as well as Continental or European made toys, for those wanting options outside of the standard "Made in China". Though these were still the minority last time I was there. The staff offers multiple services, including baby shower registration, personal shopping, call-backs on out of stock items, and gift wrapping (This is no longer free, but is a nominal charge), as well as being very well versed in the product. They will constantly try to help you, as management trains and requires staff to take a classic personalized service experience. Some people prefer this, others find it pesky, but it's going to happen. They do know the product very well and are very helpful with suggestions if you need something for a gift, but know nothing about the child in question. A couple things that are not carried: cribs, bottles, diapers, and car seats. Peekaboo shares an owner with Splash Toys, just two doors down.

I hope it's a reflection of things to come. Sparkle & Junebug is sadly one of only a few outlets in these parts that appears to actually clean and care for its window display and its store shelves both of which are attractive and mercifully uncluttered. Interestingly, despite its small size, the store is airy with plenty of room to look and examine, which shows what one can do with a bit of design effort. The proprietor appears to have a genuine affection for children, girls particularly. I was pleased to find a wide and varied assortment of reasonably-priced sparkle wear for three-year-old who is about to be displaced by a probably rather unwelcome baby brother courtesy her new stepmother. Yes. We felt a bit of bribery might inspire good relations. Happily, if more is required, as one suspects it might be, there is plenty of good boodle here - lace party dresses fit for royalty as well as tasteful child jewels. For a modest $20, I trousered an excellent diadem hair comb, which should assure her ladyship's status as daddy's wee princess for some time to come. It was a relief to be helped rather than mauled by English-speaking sales personnel. The person who attended was both knowledgeable of the modern little girl's secret heart and genuinely helpful. I was especially pleased with the small cloth bag provided for the gift instead of wrapping paper. The only thing missing is a selection of cards appropriate for children but these are now surprisingly hard to come by. My only grumble is that I have only the one female child for whom such purchases may be sought. I shall have to find excuses for return visits. Highly recommended.

Actually, I notice there tends to be individual services (florist, fruit/veg stand/ butcher/ baker) for most things in each area...very different from the US...and I think it's much nicer. Granville Island Toy Co. has been around for quite awhile. The emphasis is on quality play things, but they do have some of the latest trend items also (like Frozen dolls). The shop is nicely laid out. The displays are inviting. It is easy to find things. On my last visit, I noticed a bunch of siege engines and Da Vinci machine models on display. They were very well made and would be so fun to mess with. This store has a great selection of popular, high end toys: Playmobil, Calico Critters (I lovvvve Calico Critters), Legos, Schleich. More trendy stuff by Funko. An excellent selection of games of all types for all ages & lots of puzzles. Excellent place for stocking stuffers. They also have Corolle dolls - these are lovely for any child that wants a baby doll - they smell like vanilla, so well made & sweet looking. The staff here is friendly and knowledgeable. They aren't pushy. Granville Island Toy Co. offers gift wrap, gift cards and has a nice customer loyalty program. You get $5 for every $100 you spend and an invite to their annual 25% off sale. Used items are very nice & fit "the look" of the store - which I would describe as unique, well-made, and colourful. I love the lack of stereotypical pinks & blues - traded in for a softer, earthier, more casual looks for kids of both genders. Items are really well organized for easy shopping. Prices in general are very good, but the used items are a particularly great deal. Beansprouts even carries high quality, gently worn shoes. I think you could easily walk out of here with a very nice used outfit for under $20 CAD. The only drawback might be that Beansprouts is for the size 6x and under set - my daughters, 9 & 11, were disappointed none of the offerings would fit them. I was disappointed I couldn't find anything for my 7 year old son - though I'm sure he wasn't!
