I had an incredible Thursday hot yoga flow with Sara. It was such a beautiful challenge but I was able to tap into my breathing like never before. Her opening breathing exercises were beautiful. I tapped in and pushed. It was a gorgeous but challenging flow. Found it on ClassPass and breathed through it. If you're open to it, Sara is hands-on. I started 2025 not sure if I would ever run long distances again due to recurring pain. I tried physical therapy, taking time off from running, injections, and more. But what really has changed things for me is Pilates at Mind the Mat. Caroline Deitch got me started and tolerated my clumsiness. Katie Goode is amazing, and Dr. Megan Brown keeps kicking my ass, yelling at me, and forcing me to be better. It may be a bit crazy that a 55 year old dude is doing Pilates, but, I'm running again and I'm not having any pain. I also feel more stable when I run. So...I'll be back. read more

85 pilates barre classes later... safe to say it's still a five star! Essential part of my week!

I've been going to a classes here for a few weeks now and absolutely love this studio. Here are the details... The studio: There are 3 studios - two room temp, and one hot studio. The hot (or "hawt") classes are nice and hot! The studio is always clean and nice. There are lockers with built-in locks on the second floor that you can use that aren't in the hot studio, so that your phone won't overheat. They have wipes for you to wipe off your equipment. The instructors: Top-rate instructors - they are all SO good, and also incredibly welcoming and motivating. I think after 2 classes with each instructor, each one knew me by name. It feels like this studio is really trying to build community in an authentic way. The schedule: There's a huge range of classes (yoga, pilates, barre) from some that are super gentle and relaxing, to some that will kick your butt - whatever you need on a certain day. I really appreciate that there are a ton of times available each day from 6am through 8pm - there's a good range. The parking: You have to park on the street. It's free, which is a plus. However, on Saturday mornings, I find myself circling the block a few times before finding something. I've never had an issue on weekdays - it's really only on the weekends that you need to give yourself some extra time for parking. The price: The monthly price is similar to other studios in the area, and they do have a military discount. They have some amazing workshops though that aren't included in the membership, about $25 - $45 each. I do wish more of the special workshops like Yoga Nidra were included in the monthly membership. I come here just for the Pilates classes. This studio is the only one in the area that offers a hot mat Pilates class - something I tried in CA once and loved (and prefer to the reformer machine). It's a tough workout that will leave you sore and get your heart rate going. I only wish this place was closer to my house! read more

I survived my first yoga class, it was pretty awesome, the space was peaceful, the teacher went at a great pace and being able to sign up and pay for my class online was very convenient. I was a little nervous going into this, coming out I feel great. Fast forward 3 months in and I love this place more and more, I've taken numerous classes with several different teachers, although I do have my favorites, all of the teachers and classes are fantastic. I discovered Mind the Mat at this year's Well Ray event and purchased the 4 class passes for $40 to try them out. I'm going to say right now, I don't intend on purchasing a monthly pass ONLY because my best friend needs a place with childcare and I'd prefer going where she does, but if they offered childcare or my friend's schedule allowed her to go here, I'd be a forever member. All four classes I took were FANTASTIC with really excellent instructors, a clean space, and doTerra products. While you're asked to bring your own mat to most classes and your own towel to the Hot classes, they have several items in studio for you to use (hand weights, Pilates balls, yoga blocks, etc.). I tried Flow Yoga I/II, Yoga Barre, and Pilates Barre, and would easily recommend them to anyone and everyone. I understand with their particular space restraints, childcare just isn't really an option, and I'm disappointed I won't be returning (for now). If you are childfree or have a schedule that allows you to make it to a class or two during the week, then you should absolutely check out Mind the Mat! read more

Love their hot yoga studio. I have been to many hot yoga studios where tou just feel gross, sweaty, and suffocating even before class starts. MtM studio feels just right and I can breathe... i definitely sweat more than regular flow, but it doesnt feel disgusting. The floor is clean and the studio itself is a very cute place. I really enjoyed Georgia's class at 9:30 am with her hands-on assists and guidace. Her voice is very soothing and super encouraging. Although it is a 75min class, it does not seem that long, even in the heat. There is a lot of parking in the back and tons of classes to explore. read more

I completed my 200 hour teacher training here and it was one of the best decisions that I've ever made in my life. The curriculum covered not only teaching a sequence but also anatomy and the business of yoga. It really was a transformative experience and will deepen your understanding of the yogic philosophies, the definition of yoga, and who you are as a teacher/student. I have also practiced here and have appreciated the wide variety of courses. Each teacher also has something different and lovely to offer. I have yet to try the Pilates classes, but have heard nothing but amazing things about it! They have limited parking in the back of the building, however, you can always find street parking pretty easily. read more

I've tried almost all the yoga studios in the area, and Mind the Mat is my favorite. With the monthly membership you can take classes at both the Alexandria and Arlington location, so that's nice and convenient. Most of the time I go to Alexandria because it's closer, but I've gone to Arlington a couple times. My usual and favorite class is the hot power flow at 9:30a with Georgia. It's a great workout and I like how you can advance it and cut back as you see fit without being judged. Georgia is encouraging and helpful for getting into poses. My goal for 2019 was handstand and I don't think I would've gotten there without Georgia's class with the ample opportunities to practice. read more

A few years ago my wife dragged me to my first pilates class here at Mind the Mat. She was also new to pilates, so we opted for a beginner's course. First of all, I was relieved not to be the only guy in the class! I was immediately impressed at the quality of instruction provided. Technique and form were clearly explained and emphasized. The class was small enough that individual instruction was given to everyone. There are often apprentice instructors observing classes, who offer even more individual instruction opportunities. After several months we started taking the intermediate pilates class as well as pilates boot camp. I experienced the same quality of instruction and attention to detail in the intermediate class as with the beginner's class. The pilates boot camp class is one of the highlights of my week. This class seriously kicks my a$$. I usually go to the gym 3 times per week, but I never get anywhere near the workout I get at Mind the Mat's pilates boot camp. The instructors are motivating and high energy, but also in tune with people's limitations and offer adjustments for anyone with lingering injuries. My initial motivation for starting a pilates practice was my lower back - specifically how to prevent pain so I could play more golf! While pilates has not completely gotten rid of my gimpy back, I experience much less pain and fewer back injuries since beginning my practice. I've also found that my general fitness level has increased on all fronts - strength, flexibility, endurance, and most importantly willpower - thanks in large part to the fine folks at MtM! read more

A lot of older men and women at this location. And they are selfish people who take up a lot of floor space. Please MTM, establish a studio culture wherein students line up their mats in two rows. If a student arrives early and wants mirror space, then they can just line up at the mirror. Maybe you should cap classes at 10 or 12. Students here seem to take DC crowding coping and defensive mechanisms and apply them to their exercise experience. Angela's class was crowded and women were haphazardly spaced, taking up more space than necessary; the room was cold, and some of the older women actually asked Angela to open a window, making it colder; she did not do a proper warm-up, forgot to have us do the other side on several occasions; and generally seemed to lack a plan for the class. read more

Nice studio tucked into Del Ray. I attended a class on the second floor. It wasn't the biggest space, but it fit a decent amount of people. The facilities were well kept and thermoregulated. This is an amazing Pilates and yoga studio! I was new in town and needed to find a new yoga studio. I was really impressed with my precious place, so I was really nervous to have to find a new one. However, since my first class at Mind the Mat in Alexandria, I was hooked. I love that they offer more than just Pilates, they do yoga and barre as well. I also love the hot Pilates classes. I have never done hot Pilates before, but this is an amazing workout for your whole body. Also, the whole staff at Mind the Mat is very friendly and knowledgable. Laura's yoga, barre, and Pilates classes are top notch! She makes you enjoy the class, even though you are working so hard. Her classes really make you feel stronger and physically better overall. Great classes, best pilates and yoga instruction in this area, and easy to get to and park near. I've taken prenatal pilates and yoga, postnatal pilates and yoga, every hot yoga class on offer, barre (particularly when I was pregnant) and pilates boot camp. At Mind the Mat, I've prepared my body for having a baby, recovered from having a baby, and rehabbed (via Pilates classes) after foot surgery. The quality of instruction is truly incredible and very consistent. Megan (B. and L.), Caroline, Georgia, Alli, Julie, Natalie, Stephanie, and everyone else have built such a welcoming community and I look forward to every one of their classes. My only wish is that there were some faster-paced unheated classes (Caroline's unheated vinyasa class is great -- challenging and fast enough) on offer. Sometimes you just want a break from the heat. I've been going to this studio for four years and I dread moving away from it someday! read more

For the 300th review...yoga, because, why not? I love this place. I've been coming here for nearly two months and have thoroughly enjoyed it. The handful of instructors I've had classes with have all been knowledgeable and capable. The other attendees are all legitimately interested, too. This is a great change from the usual set of people who would show up at classes at Gold's who treat it more as "look at me" than taking it seriously. Classes range from beginner to advanced, including yoga (hot, flow, gentle, barre and combinations of) as well as Pilates. I'm nowhere near balancing on my forehead and fingertips, but the assistance and advice of the instructors have greatly improved my practice. As someone who's physically designed to run through obstacles, it's amazing to learn how I can still be flexible. I took advantage of the monthly unlimited membership with a military discount as it's the most cost effective if you plan to attend 2-4 sessions per week. The sheer number of classes held each day with a wide range of start times makes scheduling around work pretty feasible. While the monthly cost is high, consider that it's a deterrent to keep the more committed attendees around and build a consistent core. The neighborhood is a great bonus to the Alexandria location. Plenty of small shops and casual eateries within a few blocks. It's a nice transition to be able to take a weekend class and grab lunch after. Well worth the price for the Alexandria location, although I have not yet had the opportunity to visit the Arlington location. read more

Absolutely amazing. I bought the unlimited for 3 months just based on the reviews. First class I took- yoga happy hour. Completely full. Levels 1 & 2. But the people were great, truly positive energy. The instructor provided modifications for those of us not at the advanced level. It was wonderful and hard. Relaxing and a workout. Hot Pilates express. Also fabulous. 45 packed minutes. Very challenging. Hot deep stretch- as a runner this class is a must. Great stretches and the warmth helps so much. The manager is so nice and all instructors have been amazing. Truly. The entire place has a great happy vibe. Sad we are moving in August as I will miss this place. I've already signed up for the next week of classes. Cons- some classes are too full. Pros- clean, intelligent, nicely decorated, wonderful place. read more

I just finished the 6-week Yoga Fundamentals workshop package at MtM. Overall, I found the value to be very good ($96 for 6 classes - $18 per session). The class experienced a lot of attrition during the 6 weeks, but I attribute this to busy DC schedules vs. bad experiences. Our group of "fundamentalists" had the opportunity to be taught by two instructors, as our main instructor, Jen, unfortunately had to travel out of town for the last two classes. Experiencing a different instructor provided nice insight to what your true yoga practice would be like, with different instructors and teaching styles from class-to-class. I loved the first four weeks with Jen. She encouraged laughing and having fun. As complete beginners (I think 1, maybe 2, other students had previous long-term experience), it was nice to be given permission to enjoy ourselves and laugh -- to be reminded that no one is ever perfect in yoga practice, especially in the beginning. While there was a lot of verbal instruction, Jen made sure we were moving constantly, and we definitely got more than our fair share of exercise in the 75min class. I definitely recommend her classes -- especially if you are an early riser, because she teaches Mon/Wed early morning hot yoga classes at the same location. The substitute instructor, Laura, was also good. She definitely had a different style of teaching and focused much more on the flow practice. In our second class (the last class of the workshop), Laura, as Director of Programming for Mind the Mat, asked for feedback, which the students freely gave -- mostly positive, but some constructive. I did notice that Laura immediately applied some of the feedback in our last class, and this was greatly appreciated. Mind the Mat is a great studio for beginners, and they offer much, much more for more experienced yogis. It's conveniently located in Del Ray and there is usually ample street parking in the few blocks around the building. If you have the opportunity to try yoga or pilates at Mind the Mat, I don't think you'll be disappointed. read more

So there's about four different Yoga studios in my neighborhood and this is probably one I would say I frequent the most. It has three different levels of studios ( the top floor devoted to Hot yoga/pilates, the second to warm yoga, pilates and barre, and the first floor for yoga and workshops though they may vary depending on the class) I actually ended up doing my teacher training through this studio because of the wealth of diversity when it came to teachers and styles. They've strived to provide programs that focus on women's health, whether it's prenatal or mommy and me yoga/pilates. That being said they also have a number of workshops that focus on mental health and physical well-being. Check in is very professional and the rooms are always clean and nice smelling. None of the teachers wear any overwhelming perfumes and are , in my opinion, very happy to be there and teaching. I would definitely recommend them to anyone new to the neighborhood who is new to yoga practices or needs an efficient class to ground yourself for the day. read more

During my pregnancy, I took pre-natal yoga classes here. Good things about MTM: - You can buy classes, packages, and sign up for classes online. - They have a variety of different kinds of classes, including prenatal yoga. - It's really easily accessible - close to Braddock Rd metro and if driving, really easy to find parking. Areas for improvement: - When I took prenatal yoga, there were different instructors (maybe it was just because it was August). One or two of the instructors did not seem very experienced with prenatal yoga or pregnancy, including one who had absolutely no idea how to teach a class full of women with gigantic bellies. Some of the women actually walked out. All in all, I'm looking forward to living closer and taking other classes at MTM. read more

Words cannot describe how pumped I was when they opened in Arlington. I have come to del ray since I moved here in 2007 to frequent the small neighborhood shops, farmers market (especially when the one at courthouse was too chaotic) and I found Mind the Mat in 2008ish? Feels like forever ago. Pilates Bootcamp with Megan always leaves me hungry for more. Makes my body feel long lean and strong! Living and working up north in Arlington-it always felt like a bummer to only make it down once a week. Jen is another instructor to check out-she is the type of yoga instructor that you want to be when "you grow up"-she has that something sassy pizzaz with a scoop of enlightenment and inspiration. I have been to the classes in Arlington-THANK THE LORD it is right down the road from my apartment!! Woot Woot! I took the Budakon-(spelling?) which is martial arts mixed with power yoga and a class with an amazing teacher Stacey, I think? I am very much looking forward to taking 2-3 classes a week and sampling all they have to offer. For those of you not looking for traditional classes-hit up the Arlington location-they have a few additions that they dont have at Del Ray. Have fun getting bendy and fit, ladies! I've been going to the hot yoga classes here and have to say that they are great! I'm a guy and have limited flexibility, tight hamstrings, etc., but this is a really good workout! I've done Bikram Yoga before and the Hot Yoga at Mind the Mat is a shorter class. Driving all the way to Telegraph for an hour and half class feels like it takes up my whole evening. Megan Brown is hands down the most amazing pilates instructor I've ever had! Never before have I met someone able to combine the science of PT w the high energy and intensity (and humor!) that she brings to her Pilates Bootcamp class! In just 10 mo I went from a constant dull hip pain (from labral tears/mild dysplasia) to 100% pain free and able to actually run and sprint around w my playful puppy!! Amazing!! Life Changing! I went to my first hot yoga class at Mind the Mat this am and really enjoyed it. The instructor was sweet and made me laugh throughout the 70 minute class which made hot yoga tolerable. Her pace, for me, was fast enough to keep me engaged and slow enough that I was able to keep up and not fall over from heat exhaustion. I will definitely be going back! read more

A decent studio with one major flaw: the lack of a monthly membership option makes it perhaps the most expensive place in the DC area for a daily practice. Yes, I know yogis who are serious enough to practice every day tend to have a strong home practice, but I'm not disciplined enough for that. I need the energy and adjustments of a class. First the good: I prefer Mind the Mat over other studios for hot yoga. The instructors do creative flows. Even the slower flows are energizing in a relaxing way. In some ways, I feel like a beginner all over again, learning asanas that aren't part of a typical Baptiste class. "Hot hatha, 26 poses at 110 degrees" is also on the schedule, if you're a Bikram refugee. The hot yoga room is gorgeous. Luxurious red walls and ceiling feel indulgent when the lights are dimmed and the outside is dark; lack of street noise is an additional pleasure. It's intimate without being claustrophobic. One wall is partially mirrored. There's a grand mural of MtM's second logo, which is inspired by Arabic calligraphy (I like it a lot, and it makes me see the primary logo, a partly-rolled yoga mat, as more of a flying carpet). Although only a handful of hot classes are scheduled each day, they are at times that folks with a day job and a commute can actually attend! (So many studios ... don't get this right.) The morning classes are at 6:00. There's an evening class after 7:30 every weekday. And at $99 for 10 classes (good for hot yoga only, not sure how long this offer will last), MtM is actually more affordable on a pay-per-class basis than other hot studios. Not that there are many non-Bikram options on this side of the river. I can't get a feel for how crowded MtM classes usually are; some have been mat-to-mat, while other have had only 3 or 4 people. In general, the first class of the day appears to be more crowded than the last class of the day. As for regular classes...Mind that Mat is not my studio of choice. Caveat: I have no use for prenatal or mommy & me classes, and pilates is not my cup of tea. So 90% of MtM's offerings aren't really my style, anyway. Paying $400 a month for daily vinyasa classes (using the most cost-effective package of 15 classes for $205 on auto-renew) is hard to justify. Not in a market where several studios offer monthly rates for under $100, where the going rate without a contract is around $150, and where even high-end and specialty studios stay under $200 per month. Granted, most people aren't going to go to class every day--my own target is five a week--but even attending just three or four classes a week at MtM will set you back $200 a month. Yes, the instructors (at least the ones with experience) are good, but almost all of them also teach at other studios. read more

I primarily attend yoga classes and have been doing so regularly for the past two years. The studio is welcoming and the classes I attend are great. Georgia Gerstein in particular is phenomenal. I have had many coaches and teachers throughout my life but never one so focused on making her students better. She knows exactly when to help you take it up a notch and gives you the positive motivation and help to do so without any intimidation. I look forward to every class and miss it when I can't go. I never thought I'd be learning how to headstand and handstand after having a baby but why not? I love working toward something new at every age and every day. read more

They don't tell you about the aches and pains, emotional rollercoaster, and this funny little thing called Hyperemesis gravidarum that you probably never heard of until Princess Kate, unless you're one of the few unfortunate ones to be blessed with its diagnosis. So, having been experiencing a bed rest ridden pregnancy, I was delighted when my midwives finally cleared me for prenatal yoga, and encouraged me to start taking it twice weekly. Mind the Mat has come up in my searches for the perfect studio before, but I decided to wait and try it for whenever I got pregnant. Well, lookey here. I had some questions about what the pilates classes entailed, and Becky was quick to respond to my e-mail inquiries. The schedule boasts a wide array of classes including yoga barre (can't wait to try this after baby), pilates barre, yoga, pilates, HOT YOGA!, and pre and post natal classes. There is truly something for everyone at at time that works for our busy schedules. Online booking was a breeze, and I scored a new client special of 5 classes for $39. I chose to attend Paige's Sunday morning prenatal yoga class, and was very excited to try her out since we are Yelp buddies. They have a couple of parking spots behind the studio, and there is plenty of metered and unmetered street parking nearby. I was able to park right in front of the studio. Check-in was easy peasy, and I waddled my way up to the second floor studio. The first thing I noticed, was the cushioned hardwood floor. It felt great to my feet. The window filled studio was inviting, clean, and spacious. There's a bathroom in the studio in addition to plenty of props and storage space for your belongings. The class had about 10 women in it all in various stages of pregnancy. The class was glorious. The only way I can describe it is with the quote above. Paige helps you work with what you've got going on, and just be kind to yourself in this current stage of life. With that being said, this was not your boring prenatal yoga dvd. This class had some flow y'all! Much to my giddy delight, there was pigeon pose, half moon pose with the wall, and a few planks. Before you click off- it was as easy or as challenging as you needed it! Remember it's prenatal yoga. so there was no need to compete with yourself or others. We used props and the wall, in addition to taking breaks and modifying the poses. Paige was mindful to tell us how the poses would help us for labor and birth, as well as breathing through what is here as well as to come. I felt like I got a workout, relaxation, labor and delivery prep, and new friends all in one 60 minute class. Afterwards, people chatted with one another, and I appreciated the friendly faces. I haven't made a lot of friends since moving to the area, and it's nice to connect with other local pregnant women in the area. I loved the class so much, I plan to sign up for one of the 6 week prenatal yoga workshops starting soon. They also have a large pilates following, and pre/post natal pilates and yoga workshops. Long story short- this has been some of the best yoga I've had in six months. Wait, it's the only yoga I've had in six months, but amazing all the same! read more
