After its success in Mahopac, New York, in July 2022 Mimi's Kitchen expanded to Carmel Hamlet, a small town that is around 15 minutes west of Danbury. The kitchen focuses on Salvadoran dishes, but also offers some more common deli breakfast and sandwich items on the menu. Curiously, the kitchen identifies itself as Italian and Salvadoran, despite the closest Italian representation being a few conventional NYC area deli items (e.g. chicken Parmesan sandwich). Orders are placed at the counter, but food can be prepared to go (thick paper containers are available) or served on plates at one of a small number of cafe tables. As it was my first time at Mimi's Kitchen, I needed some time to decide what to order. Signs with dish descriptions are displayed on the wall, but I recommend getting familiar with the menu (attached) in advance if, like me, this is your first encounter with Salvadoran cuisine. That said, the people working the counter were patient, helpful, and friendly. I enjoyed expertly seasoned rice and black beans, with a side of moist, golden plantains. Knowing corn is a staple of Central America, I looked to experience some corn-based dishes. I was encouraged to try Pupusas -- the national dish of El Salvador -- which were good. Pupusas are corn tortillas that are filled with different ingredients and typically served with pickled cabbage and vinegary tomato sauce (although not here (?)). I chose a Pupusa with fried pork rinds and melted cheese filling, and can see how these acidic condiments would enhance. I also tried the chicken tamale, which was served chilled (also atypical) and contained two three inch long strands of dry chicken breast. I would not order that kind of tamale again -- the menu alternative corn tamale with cream should be better. I wish I had picked up one of the imported beverages. I think a can of coconut juice or a bottle of one of the bright, sugar cane-based (not corn syrup ) sodas would complement the meal. Orange juice squeezed to order is another great option. I look forward to returning to try other items, and to dining at one of the cheerfully painted picnic tables on the patio during warm weather. When I do I will ask if the traditional condiments for the Pupusas are available, and whether the refrigerated tamales can be warmed up before giving these dishes another try.
