Hi :) had an appointment at this salon with Susie for June 29th and she canceled the appointment on Monday evening because she had covid for a week. I wonder why it took her so long to reach out? It's a wonderful salon; not just my hairdresser, Cindy, does such a great job cutting my hair. Not because my friends and daughter (!) that go to her love her technique. It's the way the hairdressers care for each other that was most impressive to me. One had a bout with cancer and the girls rallied around her, taking her to chemo and spending time w her after. We expected at least some basic level of hygiene and cleanliness. The place is presumably on the "cutting edge technology" (from: www.mimiandcocosalon.com). Yes, they take your temperature at the entrance but then things go downhill fast. The chairs are not cleaned between the clients (covered with the previous patron's hair). Hands, surfaces are not sanitized. This is just what's in the plain view of customers, not sure about the tools either. COVID aside, aren't these the essentials to expect, before any "technology"? Mirela became defensive when my wife inquired about their cleaning practices and advised "to not go to public places if you are so concerned". Oh well, Mimi&Coco just made our list of those places. Vida is the best! I followed her from her previous salon "Somewhere in Los altos" to Mimi and Coco and am so happy to be at this salon. The salon is very nice, very bright and carries the Kerastase line. The owner greeted me and offered water and tea and was very welcoming. Vida is my favorite hair stylist ever, she's so consistent and talented and my hair always looks amazing when I leave. This is a review for Jim Reynolds who is an amazingly talented hair stylist. His profile on Mimi & Coco's website is humble and dramatically understated which fits Jim's personality. He is friendly, unassuming, and has an outstanding customer service orientation. However, that profile does not really do justice to his totally mad hair skillz. I have been looking for a good hair stylist since I moved to Silicon Valley three years ago, drifting about listlessly, unsatisfied, and going weeks and weeks between haircuts just to avoid the trauma of crappy stylists. And then I found Jim. (This is the part where the clouds open and angels sing.) I have very fine hair but a TON of it. And it's straight. I am completely happy with my hair color, gray and all, and am infuriated when stylists who don't know how to cut hair suggest that what I need is color to compensate for their lack of skill. I like to wear my hair short (see pictures) but have had a hard time getting anyone to cut it short enough (cowards!). Although my hair is fine, I have a ton of it so I need a stylist who is not afraid to really cut into it and texturize the bejeezus out of it. When I sat down with Jim and explained what I wanted, he confidently went to work. He checked in with me throughout the cut to make sure we were headed in the right direction and was able to address all of my concerns with beautiful solutions. He had the vision and skill to get right to business and when he was finished I seriously almost broke down crying in the salon because I was so happy. As a bonus, Jim's personality makes it a delight to be in his chair. I'm going to go ahead and address other reviews of this salon in Jim's defense. One issue other reviewers have raised is with the salon's reception desk. It is true that the salon is a chair rental establishment which means that each stylist is, essentially, running his or her own business. The reception desk has been hit and miss for me as far as customer service, but after you've seen Jim you'll have his direct contact information. He has been very responsive via both voice and text. Another theme seems to be that this is a salon for old ladies. The salon is in Los Altos for goodness sake! Yes, there are often a lot of old ladies in there. But Jim is not an old lady hair designer. I mean, I'm sure he does lovely hair cuts for women of all ages. But if you are a younger person, you can be confident that Jim will take care of you. He is using current techniques and methods and is excited about delivering the best style for his clients' wishes, hair type, and head shape. read more

This was my first foray into getting my hair cut by local stylists. On the basis of the strong reviews in Yelp, I decided to try it out. A few weeks ago, I walk in and the salon is clean, but the stations have homemade jewelry in square cases scattered across the top of the counters. Neither of the hair stylists have great hairstyles themselves (an "uh oh" for me) and one is approaching her early 50's or 60's with a stereotypical, unflattering, short haired, perm job. The only other person being serviced is a middle aged woman having her hair styled in a plain straight cut. This should have alerted me that the stylists here probably could not do anything cutting edge and if they did, probably not very well. I'm scheduled to see the older lady. She has lots of advice and is extremely friendly and I say, go ahead, cut off 5 or 6 inches and give me some nice layers. I have very straight hair, so the layering has to be especially good, or it just comes off as choppy and ugly. She dislikes my current style and says I need something more trendy. I let her go with her ideas. My hair has been growing out for 3 months and needs an update anyway. The second bad sign, she comes back after mixing the color and drips the color onto my sleeve, not once, but twice as she waves the brush in the air as she talks. She is simply not paying attention. She drips it onto my face too, but attentively wipes it off right away. She is also painstakingly slow, but I'm going with the flow. Besides, I like her, she's being very nice. She sets the timer, pulls up the trays of handmade jewelry by her daughter, pitches them to me, gets me some magazines and walks away. I think to myself, not very professional to pitch me the jewelry, but it's a small town, that's probably normal. The timer dings, but no hair stylist. She comes back 15 minutes after the timer is finished. Still, I'm going with the flow, no big deal. Besides, I'm reading an interesting magazine. Third bad sign, she washes my hair and turns the nozzle right into my ears and floods both of them. Again, not paying attention. I'm still going with the flow, even though I really dislike having my ears flooded like that. I have to pop them on the towel around my neck. Then comes the hair cut. Fourth bad sign, she opens a drawer full of used brushes and combs, ALL of them unwashed, with hair styling product caked on, and wads of hair from other clients in the bristles. She picks one of them to use on my hair as she cuts! I cringe as she starts combing out my wet hair. What hair stylist in a self proclaimed upscale 'salon' does not clean her brushes and combs? She goes to work, snipping away. She butchers my bangs, saying they need to be thinned, but she doesn't portion out the hair before cutting, she combs my hair forward, then snips. She snips some of my longest hair from the back of the top of my head to less than an inch. But they aren't part of my bangs. Bizarre. I'm living with it now and I'm not stressing too much because it'll grow out, but give me a break! She does a minimal of layering, but that's okay, the hair doesn't turn out too choppy. Then comes the blow dry, at which she is truly awful. And she is bragging to me what a fast stylist she is and how many referrals she gets as she does this. By the time she's done, half my hair is perfectly straight with sections that have a funky curve at the ends that does not look like a flip but weird, like a kid sister trying to style her older sister's hair. It's also at the painstakingly slow pace as everything else. None of the fast, expert styling I've had in salons elsewhere. I'm never, ever going back to this place. The other stylists might be great, however, one bad stylist is enough to spoil it for me. The other reviews must be loyal locals or had a different stylist because I can't see the value. She was nice. I tipped her well. But I haven't had a haircutting experience this bad in a long time, nor paid over $160 for such "ho hum" abilities. Certainly not worth the money and I typically spend this much for a color, cut, and blow dry! read more

The salon itself is cheery and bright, with a cute little sitting area. The bathroom is very clean. People will offer you tea or water if you have to wait. I 've tried Teddy for a haircut here. She's a talented hair stylist. The lack of stars is for her bluntness and lack of discretion. She gave out unwanted advice, and unfortunately, did so in her regular voice when another stylist and customer is sitting right next to us. I thought it was rude to point out someone 's physical issue within hearing range of others, especially when I didn't initiate the topic. read more

Tragically, I want the hair that I can't have. I am curly wanting straight. Every once in a while when I don't want to burn my biceps blowing out my own hair, I turn to Jennifer. She shampoo's it, cuts it, and blows it out within an hour. I walk out of there feeling like I should be part of a MAS SEXY commercial for only 50 bucks. Love that they use Bumble and Bumble and Kerastase! I smell so girly and can't keep my fingers out of my hair. She has done my color and deep conditioning for over 6 years now. Love that it's clean, friendly staff, and great location-I always head to Satura after my haircut! Note-Jennifer works independently and only takes cash or check. Alright...let me just say I would pretty much follow Susie anywhere as she has been my primary stylist since January 2002 when I moved to attend college!! Yeah, she is THAT good! She was one of the owners of PlumSpa in San Jose, which was a fabulous place and recently made the move to Mimi & Coco in Los Altos. A little bit closer to me but still a bit of a trek. I seriously rent a ZipCar for 4.5 hours (roughly $50 bucks) just to make the trip...or it's 2.5 hours each way by CalTrain and bus. read more

It was a Saturday night and I forgot to book and appointment for a blowdry for a shower I have to attend at one on Sunday. So I start yelping places in the Los altos palo alto area that are open on Sundays and come across this place. On the website it states that they open at 9 on Sundays. So at 830am Sunday morning I leave a message for someone to call me back for a blowdry appointment anytime between 9 and 12. I stated that I had a function at 1pm and if someone could please call me back asap whether or not they had a spot or if they were booked. I wanted a call back either way. So 10am rolls around and I call, no answer. 11, no answer. I get desperate and go somewhere crappy. I get a call from someone at this salon at 1pm!!! Saying she could do a blowdry at 4pm!!! Umm hello did you not listen to my message?!? What awful customer service they have!!!! I always buy my kerastase products from they and I will never give them my business again if they don't know how to return a simple phone call. She always listens to what i want and gives her advice, but only with your best interest in mind. Never been dissapointed with cuts and color. She also has done the most amazing highlights on my mom's hair, perfectly blended; she's very good with color. Anyways, I have extremely curly hair (which I straighten a lot) and I have gotten it cut by many hairstylists, but I've never had a hairstylist know how to cut curly hair. Vida cut my hair short perfectly, checking how it would look curly as she went. She also gave me really good advice to not cut it too short, wait and see how I like my new haircut, and then come back if I want it even shorter, to make sure I was accustomed to the length. I've been going to Teddy Wild for my hair needs for awhile now. She's amazing at what she does and listens carefully to what I want. This is an intimate, clean, and private salon that I love going to. There seems to be a wide age range of customers that come in and out of this salon, and I have only been to Teddy, but everyone seems really nice. I hesitated giving 5 stars because if you're looking for an edgier style, you should probably look elsewhere. But if you're looking for color ($60-75 for partial highlights) or a trim (around $50) this is an awesome place to go to. read more

Excellent, very experienced hair stylists work here. For the last couple of years, I have had Mimi cut my hair, and not only does she do excellent work, she is very friendly, and she knows exactly the kind of cut you want without giving her much detail. Usually I say something along the lines of: "Keep the length," or "Just a little bit shorter," and that usually suffices. The only thing that kept me from giving this salon a five star rating is the price. Although the salon is good in its own right, expect to pay at least twice as much as you would at a different salon. A regular haircut for me (a guy with normal length hair) costs around $50. read more

Jeanne La Porte has been cutting, highlighting and styling my hair for many years. I had been driving an hour to my previous hairdresser until I discovered her: a friend who had similar long, curly hair had a beautiful cut and very natural color. Since then, Jeanne has been recreating my previously-natural mix of color by lowlighting my gray with some color. She also helped to create a new look for me, since my gray hair was kinkier and less curly than my original brown hair. She has been able to tame my frizzy, thick hair into a sophistocated, fun style. As for the salon, it is very attractive and welcoming; it is not a snobby, chi-chi kind of place. I look forward to my time at Mimi and Coco's because I can relax and read in a comfortable, friendly atmosphere. In particular, I love getting to see Jeanne, catch up, and enjoy her humor. Each stylist at the salon has her own clientele so you may want to read the reviews and select a stylist before you call. I've been seeing Jeanne La Porte and have travelled with her from one salon to another over the past 15 years. Jeanne is very current with styles and she is a master colorist and cutter - two things that are critical to me. She has recommended changes in my style over time to be more consistent with my professional and personal needs. She is a wiz at coloring - including highlighting, lowlighting, glazes and other specialties. It is not uncommon for other women to give me unsolicited compliments about my style and the color of my hair (which is a highlighted soft/dark red and looks so natural!) and to ask me where I get it done. Whenever I've been at the salon, it has been clean, including the bathroom and the open salon area. There are plenty of clean gowns, some with snaps and others that are wraps. The Kerastase products are terrific, though expensive. I think each stylist sets her own prices, so check with the receptionist about pricing when you schedule. Jeanne's prices are reasonable for the great results. read more

I have long blonde (thanks to Jeanne) hair, and I love this salon! My stylist is Jeanne LaPorte, and I have been going to her for 10 years. I have long hair and she never pressures me to cut it. She gives me a hip, layered cut. She is a master at color giving me base, highlights, and lowlights that remind me of my hair color as a kid. She has been coloring hair for 30 years!
