After reading all the reviews, I feel I must have gotten James on an off day... or perhaps there was a misunderstanding. I'm giving three stars based on that assumption because it wasn't even a three star massage. When I booked the massage I asked for deep tissue. When I arrived I said that my upper back, shoulders, and neck were really tight. I also mentioned that my lower back had been in spasm over the weekend. James asked, or I think he asked, "How would you like the pressure there?" and I said light, in case there was any injury or swelling. I wonder now if he was asking what kind of pressure I wanted for the whole massage, because what I got was not at all deep tissue. There was barely any pressure at all. A few minutes in, James asked "How's the pressure?" and I said "Fine" because usually that question means "Not too hard?" and it definitely was not too hard. But then a minute or two later I said, "You can actually go firmer..." He said OK, but nothing changed. He worked mostly on my mid back, a little on my legs, a little on my neck. Nothing on my shoulders, which are still like rocks. I'm actually sad, because I have had a lot of stress and really needed a good massage but money is tight. I was so happy to get a gift certificate from my friend, but I still need a massage. read more

I've received many emails from Mill Valley massage about purchasing gift certificates. So when friends asked me what I wanted as a gift I thought what could be better than a massage gift certificate. A friend purchased me a gift certificate to Mill Valley Massage. I have been trying to book a massage with my Mill Valley gift certificate for months. I've tried calling, I've left voicemails, emailed and tried to message them through Facebook, but I have not heard anything back. It's been months. I'm very disappointed to see the lack of customer service represented by Mill Valley Massage. I will never recommend someone buy a gift certificate through Mill Valley Massage again. I have chronic neck and shoulder tension which can trigger migraines. I've had hundreds of massages all over the country and James is one of the best. He spent the time needed with deep tissue to work out the tension in my shoulders without overdoing it. He also moderated the pressure on legs and arms which are more sensitive to the pressure. I had a weird experience here. I admit that I should have opened my mouth and said something at check-out but I unfortunately felt uncomfortable...and Yelp is my place to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth. My friend has been going here for many, many years and signed us each up for swedish massages today ($59). We walked in and were greeted by 5 friendly women, one of them my masseuse. She escorted me in to the room after filling out my paperwork. After I was ready to go and already down on the table, head in the hole and all, she said to me, "You would like a Swedish massage, yes?" and I replied, "Yes, but if you think certain areas are extra tight, feel free to go hard on me." That was that. I did NOT ask for a deep tissue massage or change my order ---- in my mind. When I went to pay after the massage, I was charged $64 - the price of any massage deeper than a Swedish, i.e. sports, deep tissue, etc. I was kind of floored as the massage I received was very gentle and relaxing, not a deep tissue. She may have worked my shoulders a bit hard --- but for maybe three minutes or so, not an hour's worth. I just feel like I was lead to say that I wanted something that I really did not want. I don't fault the masseuse but rather the way this was communicated to me. I know I should have said something but to be honest, this has never happened to me before. After an hour of relaxation, it is hard to switch in to aggressive-mode, which is the mode I would have needed to figure out why this happened. Just beware when you are on the table with your head down in the hole, what they are actually asking you --- and clarify any information that may seem confusing to you. read more

I've been suffering with Frozen shoulder- to where you can't lift your arm up, especially in a certain angle. Incredibly painful but the worst part is how tense it can make your neck and upper back to protect yourself from such sudden sharp pain. I had been given a gift card here and just kept forgetting to try it. It seems odd to go behind that little area by Safeway near the high school to go get a relaxing massage, but my arms and neck were so tight I cashed in & finally a booked an appt. I called on a Thursday- and was able to get in that coming Saturday-so it was on! Got there a bit late - the guy was waiting for me and read over my shoulder as I filled out a quick bit of paperwork and off we went into a room. I got a deep tissue massage and asked if he could just unblock the rocks at my neck and in layers of massage work he did that and the entire time- my arm never hurt nor was in a painful angle. It's like he unblocked the blocked chi- got it flowing again and balanced the other half of my body. It was so good that I lay there thinking he deserves a massage. The world today, everyone needs a massage- just chill out and get a massage. I did not take any pain killers for 2 1/2days which I thought was amazing and overall got my body unwinded from its tensity. I woke up on the wrong side of the bed on Friday (literally) - and as a result, I had a stiff neck. I thought I could take the matter in to my own hands. I tried icing it, a heating pad, pungent Asian healing oils - but alas, nothing could make the pain go away. It was clearly time to call in a professional. I did a local Yelp search for massage therapists, and Mill Valley Massage popped up high on the list. I checked out their website and their prices seemed very reasonable (1 hour for $65). I called them up and was so excited to learn that they could see me the very next morning. Their massage studio is located in the back parking lot of a shopping mall. It's by no means a fancy spa. There are no locker rooms, showers, or waterfalls. I walked in and was immediately greeted by the friendly receptionist. After filling out the obligatory first-time customer paperwork, I was guided in to my massage room. My massage therapist, Crystal, was a total pro. She was very sensitive to my painful spots. She applied just the right amount of pressure to my stiff neck and worked out all the messy knots and kinks. Although she occasionally checked in with me to see how I was doing, I really appreciated that she didn't spend the whole session chatting my ear off. I just wanted to tune out and enjoy my massage (which I did). In fact, I was so relaxed that I almost fell asleep a few times (that's always the sign of a good massage). Long story short - Mill Valley Massage came to my rescue. I practically floated out of their office one hour later feeling like a new man. I definitely plan on returning here next month. read more

My therapist, Karin (Carin, Karen, Karen...however it's spelled) took her time to work out my extremely tense back and shoulders....it's been a few years since my last massage. She put me through the ringer and I'm a little sore today, but I feel SO MUCH BETTER. I don't think I could ever do anything less than the 90 minute deep tissue massage. I really liked this place. I'm in sales and constantly stressed out. And I carry a heavy computer bag so my shoulders constantly hurt. I love massages, but can't really afford to go to a lux spa. But this place saved my life. I love to get massages, but I've never been into the whole spa atmosphere. I'd rather shower at my own house, I don't care about the cucumbers in the water, etc. The only time I love that type of fru fru place is if I want to go somewhere romantic with a boyfriend (Sonoma Mission inn) This place was perfect for me when I just wanted a good old fashioned massage. It was 60$ for a 50 min deep tissue massage. It has the resemblance of a Dr's office, but once you lay on the table, inhale the incense, and relax you can't tell. After the massage there was no high pressure sell to buy expensive oils or lotions. They gave you a bottle of water, sorry it had no cucumbers, but there was no pressure for tip or to buy extra items which ruin the experience for me. If you need regular massages. Go here! Over the last four years, I've seen more than six different practitioners and everyone has been exceptional. As a working mom, I'm alway pressed for time, rarely make appointments more than a day or two in advance, and I'm always in need of some unraveling when I get there. MVM is a quiet escape and an important place for me to regroup physically. They are intuitive, empathetic, communicative, and respectful about quiet/relaxation while you're there. I've been to Mill Valley Massage multiple times since I wrote the review below. As well as a whole bunch of other places. But from now on I will only be going to Mill Valley Massage. Because Donna. I just had one of the best massages I've had in my life. I made the appointment thinking I knew exactly what kind of massage I wanted (sub-specialty that takes special training) but by the time I got there, I was wishy-washy and just asked Donna (paraphrasing heavily) to free-style. Whatever she thought best. Donna is intuitive and truly gifted. I have to think back more than twenty years to remember a massage that was as good. Almost all massages are somewhat relaxing. A good massage is a bit healing. Donna is better than good. Her expertise left my body completely tension-free and so healed I feel decades younger. I forgot what it was like not to ache in my shoulder. It's funny. But for stumbling on an article saying that a particular type of massage was the be-all-end-all, I wouldn't have called around all over looking for someone trained to do it. Then decided I'd been sucked into some hype that might not be right for me. I'm glad it happened though. Because even though I didn't get that massage, it resulted in me just putting myself in Donna's hands to decide what I needed. Very grateful. read more

I've only been once but wanted to give credit to the place. It's a small, clean, quiet, and professionally managed establishment. Very affordable and a solid massage but nothing more. When you want a straightforward massage at a good price, this is the place. I've tried to return other times but I've found that because this is a small operation, it's been tough to get the times i'm available since I'm usually only in town for a few days. The price has been 10-20% lower than in San Francisco and the upscale suburban malls as well as the nicer places. The strip mall feel definitely takes it down a notch. Great little spa- Cheaper than most because it's not fancy fancy, but the therapists are very skilled and prices are cheap. I had a pinched nerve and made an appointment with my regular person. When I arrived there was a mix up and someone I never worked with waiting for me. I was beside myself as I am very sensitive to people's energy and it takes a lot for me to find a great match. I also was having surgery 2 days later so was quite anxious. I decided to stay and see if Crystal could help me. She was gracious about my apprehension and said let's see, if you don't like it we will stop. I am glad I stayed. She was wonderful, strong, present, kept the table warm, found places of tightness many would have missed. It was a 90 minute massage and I felt very relaxed and slept through the night. On an aside I paid in cash and just got a call from Michael the owner that Crystal said I left 70.00 to much (after tip that I handed her separately. ) I highly recommend Crystal and of course Mill Valley Massage. read more

Wow so I feel like I have to update my review to defend this establishment because of the negative experience by someone who couldn't cancel their appt. because of pregnancy. I also had an emergency once, called them, was told by the receptionist that I couldn't cancel it. Then I asked if I can speak to the manager and the owner himself called me back and understood the situation and he waived the rule. He was very nice and understanding and did not make me feel bad which I truly appreciated since I was already in a huge emotional wreck. Mill Valley Massage is a great place. I remain a loyal client because the owners hire quality staff and don't charge you an arm an a leg. You are free to use extra money to show your appreciation to the staff with generous tips. This is just a straight massage, no frills type of place, the therapist I had was great.
