I've been living in Middle Georgia for three years and somehow just discovered The Fresh Market. I…read morehave Yelp to thank for this life update, while in town casually strolling to see what grocery stores Macon had, it popped up in my search. When I lived in Atlanta, this was my go to grocery store, so imagine my excitement realizing there's one within a 35-mile radius of me now. Cue the happy dance in the parking lot. It's tucked into a large shopping center, so there's plenty of space to pull up, park, and prepare to spend more time (and money) than you originally planned. The moment I walked in, I was hit with the comforting aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, basically the grocery store version of a warm hug. On top of that, every employee I passed greeted me. Everyone was genuinely friendly and eager to help, which made the experience even better. I felt like a kid in a very upscale, health conscious candy store. If you're trying to eat better, this place makes it dangerously easy to stay on track. They have everything, fresh squeezed juices, exotic fruits and veggies, prepared meals, plus a quality meat and seafood department. Don't even get me started on the baked goods and yes they offer vegan and gluten-free pastries, self control was tested. I was especially impressed with their dairy free selection. There were plenty of yogurt and milk alternatives, which made this non-dairy girl feel seen and supported. One of my favorite parts was the snack displays. There were so many unique, better for you options that I hadn't seen anywhere else. I grabbed a bag of herb-seasoned popcorn on a whim and let me tell you, it did not disappoint 10 out of 10. The store itself is quaint, but don't let the size fool you I easily spent an hour exploring, especially the seasonal items. Between the fresh flowers, quality products, and overall inviting vibe, this place is officially back in my rotation. It may be "close ish," but it's absolutely worth the trip.

I picked up some chocolate as a little treat to myself while here. All in all, this was a positive experience.

That dropped to once every two weeks and now maybe once a month and is the last stop. Love the employees but so many, many things are wrong. Prices are as high or higher than most premium stores while quality is as low or lower. There's no getting around this fact. I fear that on a state or federal level, the agencies in charge of food quality control and safety are ill equipped to handle what's entering our food supply chain on a retail level that should never be there. Fresh produce has reached a new low. Prepackaged lettuce. Check the back. They're going to but the older stuff out to the front. Look it over carefully. You'd at least like to get out the door before it turns brown and some of it is brown on the self. Cucumbers are reasonably priced but often rotting in the bin as are onions and potatoes. Look the potatoes over carefully because the pealings may be green. You shouldn't eat that. Meats. I've boughten ribs there twice and twice they've made me sick. They look ok, smell ok but were somewhat slimy out of the package. I'm never buying milk or meats there. Here's a basic running list of how much things have changed in the last two years. Cukes 49c 59c up 20% canned mushrooms 49c 1.09 up 100%+ cottage cheese 1.59 2.59 up 70% old-fashioned oats 1.99 3.69 up 85% baking soda 50c 72c up up 40%+ bread some items 100%+ others not. eggs 89-99c 5.28 too much to figure. I know there's supposedly avian flu going around but it's still raising the price. These prices aren't unique to Aldi but don't try to pass off sugar that's solid as a brick. Did it have a moisture problem. I was speaking to another couple and they've experience the same thing as I have: flour millers and weevils. Flour, pasta products, rice, even some prepackaged items can be infected. Everything now goes in the freezer for a couple of days to kill any potential insects.

The father, I think, has retired and the son has taken over it. The son used to be somewhat of a brat when he worked in the store. He got married and I guess a couple of two-year olds ran the attitude out of him. And, he likely realized with running a store comes responsibility and a store needs customers to come back to make a go of it. Smaller, old-time establishment that's more of a neighborhood store than a big box, generic, no name, no relationship with the customer type store. For their size, they have a decent fresh produce section, at a price higher than say Warmart but that's the breaks, everyone's a little higher than the big box, behemoth. They are the only store that I know of in the area that sells kaolin dirt. It's packaged on a Styrofoam tray, wrapped in plastic and looks like white chocolate. For those who don't know, some people, mainly women crave this dirt which is more of a white clay/dirt during pregnancy. It's one of those old timey things that a few still keep going. They used to carry pork sausage seasoning in a bag that made 25 pounds of sausage but stopped carrying it. While I've never made pork sausage, that seasoning made a surprisingly good seasoning for beef and chicken on the grill. Nice selection of meats and basic selection of most stables that one needs around the kitchen. This is also one of the few places in town that sells one pump of NOT alcohol based gasoline. Whle gasohol might be better for a car, it's not so good for small engines like weed eaters and it's said to be hard on the seals and tubing. That alone will get several people in just to buy a gallon of gas. If you spend two hundred dollar plus on a weed eater, why shorten the life of it with gasoline that wont' stay as fresh as long and not as good a quality for these small engines? Other extras, pay phones. Yes, you might want to bring your kids here for a history lesson of how people communicated before cellphones came along. Also mail boxes. If you don't want to make the trip to the main post office and have something that you don't want to take the chance of someone stealing out of your box overnight, this will save you a lot of time. The prices are a little higher but for the time you save and mileage, it all evens out.

I also purchased an oatmeal raisin cookie. I can't say that the cookie was super soft, but it was good. My carrot cakes were coming out of the oven. Omg! They are so soft and just as delicious as I remembered. No, they will not last until tomorrow. I've already eaten two. Now I have inquired in the past if she bakes whole cakes and she said no.
