Had a great pub dinner at Mill Street Brew Pub. I finally got to have my PEI mussels, which were excellent! In addition, my husband and I split a beet and goat cheese salad. It could definitely have used more beets and goat cheese, but it was served over fresh greens with a nice vinaigrette.My granddaughter enjoyed the homemade ravioli. My wife and I dropped in last night around 6 pm and of course, my bad, I didn't make reservation thinking the place will not be packed on a Wednesday night, it was not packed but we are tabled with a large group of people having a work event, the noise was incredible, we end up move to the bar so my wife and I can talk to each other without raising our voices. The restaurant was not even full not sure why the other side of the restaurant is not open for the customer? But I want to make an appraise here to the manager and the waitress who were very considerate and felt bad for us that we had to experience the noise, the manager even gave us free dessert as a way of appreciating our patronage and constantly came to check on us making sure we are doing ok. We enjoyed the chicken and pizza and the beer is very good. I learned my lesson next I will call before I go. read more

-Elk burgers have changed my life!- I met up with family at Mill Street and had a great time! The restaurant has both indoor and patio seating. The indoor seating is what you might expect from a pub; high tables, TVs, and a very pub-like atmosphere. Our waitress was very friendly and checked up on us from time to time, however, there were lulls where we wanted drink refills and waited some. Our food also took a long time to come out. When trying to decide between the fish and chips and the elk burger I asked the waitress for a second opinion. She said that while both are good that I should try the elk burger and this has changed me! This was my first elk burger and I loved it! It has a bit more gaminess which pairs perfectly with the jam and caramelized onions. I need this in my life on a regular basis! Overall the restaurant was good but that elk burger floored me! We happened upon Mill Street Brew Pub during our exploration of the bike path that is literally down "Parliament Hill." Located within an approximately 140 year old building that was a former grist mill, Mill Street is rich in history and charm. Definitely a hotspot around Ottawa as was getting quite busy with a line growing when we left. We came a bit early and were seating immediately in one of the rooms adjacent to the main bar. The host and server were very accommodating and encouraged any questions. We each had a pint of Mill Street brew (sorry I didn't jot the names of the beer) and with a burger came out to $17.00 plus tax. I had the veggie which was quite good, and my wife had the regular bison burger which seemed very fresh. I was a bit taken aback when we were charged separately for an iced tea and burger for Josh, but I assume the billing system could not accommodate a non alcoholic beverage. Overall, definitely worth a stop if you happen to be in the area. Maybe they were having an off day. The server "had to leave suddenly" and so our beer took 25 mins, then they ran out of chicken wings, so the chicken tenders came instead and they were flavorless. After spending a full day at the Canadian War Museum, we were quite hungry (well, I was hungry, my wife was hangry). I left it up to her where to go since she's the picky one. So we pulled up, it's on this drive way off the main road there. They wanted $20 for parking, but they were giving a $20 gift certificate for dinner. There was a concert in the park area by the war museum, and to deter the attendants of the concert they were charging the highest parking fee to ensure parking for their restaurant. I thought it was a brilliant idea actually, especially since parking is so limited. Asking for a view of the river, I put the hostess in a bind because they had reservations on their enclosed porch area overlooking the river, but it was well over an hour (90 minutes I say). I told her "it's okay, we're American. We eat fast so it won't be an issue." She sat us down in the requested section of the restaurant. Our server was this chill dude, very attentive and polite. The food was great. I was offered mayo for my fries (I've heard of vinegar, but you guys put mayo on your fries? I need confirmation of this!) but opted for ketchup and vinegar. It was white vinegar so it was kind of boring, so I did the rest of my fries with ketchup (did a Candian cringe reading this sentence, or is it just odd doing fries and ketchup?). My wife and I got beer flights. She kept it simple and got bbq chicken wings advertised as a pound. What she got we looked at and were like "did they mean that, in a figurative sense? Like they use metric here, do they think of a pound like an abstract measurement like a pinch of salt or dollop of sour cream?" Long story short (too late) it was a little light to be a pound of wings. She enjoyed them though, they were tasty. My bacon cheeseburger had a name to it. This was a great brew pub off the beaten path. It has different settings in the restaurant: two outdoor patios that are very nice, an indoor area that over looks the Ottawa River, an outdoor seating area in the facade of the old mills, and a lovely bar area. The service was good, but they said the kids could get celery and carrots on the menu, but it's just carrots, no celery to be had. Hence four stars. Other than that the service was excellent. We started with calamari which was good, but spicy. I had a Torttiere which was delicious, and my wife had the salmon salad which she very much enjoyed. The beer was excellent, and a good solid pour. Came here with my wife, 2 month old baby in a stroller and 2 year old German shepherd. There is free outdoor parking if you can get a spot right next to the pub. Location is right off of the bike/walking path from downtown Ottawa. Customer service was great, waiting list y text and they have park benches outside where you can wait with a drink from the bar. We got patio seating in 15 minutes, they brought us a water bowl for the dog. The food was standard pub food with a few specialty options like the Elk burger. They have a full bar and offer plenty of on tap options as well as beer flights. Honestly it was a great end to a sunny day with very friendly and accommodating staff. read more

Heard this place had opened up a few days sooner than expected - probably to give the staff a bit of experience before the grand opening on 1/27/2012. Hubby suggested we head over for lunch, since we'd had such a good experience at the original Mill St. pub in Toronto's Distillery District. Let me just say, our expectations were high going in, based on prior experience with this restaurant line. First of all - the location: Thankfully there's a big sign, because otherwise, it would be pretty hard to find! You have to take a sort of exit ramp to the right, off Wellington. When we pulled up, it was evident that they were still working on finishing touches, with trades people all around the exterior. Not a surprise, given their official opening isn't for one more day. Front door was not all that obvious - presumably some seasonal planters will be added in the next few days or so. Picked a door and went thru - lucky guess. Inside, all of the staff were pleasant. Ground floor was still being worked on, so we were seated upstairs. We loved the menu! If you like normal pub fare (club sandwiches, fish and chips) they have it - but they also have some more interesting things too - like Duck Confit sandwhich and a Portk/Bison/Veal Tourtiere. There were quite a few things on the menu I would have liked to order. We ended up trying the Smoked Chicken Poutine. It was smokey - and the cheese curd seemed a little sweeter than most poutine cheese - it was perfect. Next course - Hubby had the Duck Confit Sandwich - it had more duck on one side than on the other (learning curve!), but was otherwise delicious. The son had Chicken club - and it was actual chicken, not processed meat - bacon looked like it was cooked on site on a grill. Great eye appeal. He enjoyed it. I had the Tourtiere. The pie itself was *great* - however very rich. If it was a larger portion, I would not have been able to finish it because it is so rich. It came with rice and peas... the peas, I got. The rice... ummm.. not so much. A bit later the manager came over and I mentioned the sides were not well matched - and he said it usually comes with mashed squash. Now that sounds perfect! So again - learning curve for the staff.. Oh well - we knew going in that we could expect slow service and little errors. That's the point of a pre-opening. Overall I thought the staff did well, our meal was great, the building is beautiful inside, with a wonderful location on the river. Hope they have a patio overlooking the river in their plan somewhere. I suspect this will become a very popular place. I know we will be back. FINALLY, Mill St is open in Ottawa!!! The only thing is my visit was comparable to flat beer sitting on the counter for a few days. I like hanging out at the one in Toronto. It's in a beautiful neighbourhood and area and is surrounded by a lot of things. Even thought he one in Ottawa is not surrounded in a lively neighbourhood at the moment it's in a beautiful location. The view through the back windows is really nice. I've only went for appetizers and beers at the Toronto location. This visit to the Ottawa location we came by for lunch. Honestly the building is awesome! I wish it was my house. The building has a restaurant, bar and beer store...and of course the brewery. They do tours on certain days and times which I don't know at the moment. For my meal I ordered a burger with fries, a coke and a side of gravy. I was with 3 other friends and they ended up bringing my friend something that she was allergic to and asked to have removed. They were extremely nice and apologetic about it and told us there was actually a bug in their system that was uncovered by her order. The fries were decent but the gravy not so much. My angus burger was small, and extremely overcooked. It was charred and beyond well done on the inside. The bun is kind of weird and it's not something I'd order again especially considering the meal was pushing $25. Service was ok. I think we saw more of the manager than our waitress but I might not have been paying to much attention. They do have their wing night on Tuesdays as well as an appetizer deal on Mondays. I'll go check out their wings one night and will want to come back at least once in the summer to see how the patio situation in the area is. I hate to do this, but I'm going to have to downgrade my rating by a star. I was at Mill Street recently with my husband and some of his work colleagues. The food has really gone downhill since my last visit 2 years ago, especially considering the price :( However, the service was great and the decor is nice. I had the Beef Dip sandwich $17. The sandwich itself was ok. There was a lot of thinly shaved roast beef, but it was slightly too fatty for me. The fries were not hot and they were all hard and dry. I was so sad as I was looking forward to tasty fries :( My husband had the Wednesday Special: Fried Chicken $19. The fried chicken was over-fried and looked almost burnt. It came with coleslaw and macaroni salad. Someone else in our party had the fish and chips and she said her fish was also over-fried and almost burnt. For the price, I was really expecting better food. However, the service was really good. Our server checked up on us appropriately and he was friendly. Our food also came really quickly. My wife and I had been wanting check out this cool repurposed mill-turned-brewpub after seeing it while biking along the river parkway during the summer. We finally got to go earlier this month, although we weren't able to take advantage of their lovely outdoor patio on a cool October evening.  The inside is very nice, with the original stone featuring prominently, and various nooks and crannies adding to the character of the interior. Despite the old bones, it's been updated and serves its purpose as a bar and brewery with style.  After some culinary indulgence on previous days, I wanted veggies to figure prominently, so I went with the falafel salad...although I did get their pierogies for a starter.  The potatoey pillows of dumpling goodness had a nice touch of golden brown crispness that yielded to the fluffy insides, and paired well with the crunchy bits of pork belly. My salad turned out to be absolutely massive. Five falafels topped a pile of arugula, chick peas, black beans and mandarin slices, and was livened up with a generous dose of tahini as the dressing. The falafels weren't big, but had a super crispy exterior and a moist, herby interior. All of the ingredients of the salad paired well together, and all the chick peas and the sheer volume of the salad as a whole made for a hearty, filling meal. My one complaint would be that the tahini, made from sesame seeds, was a bit off putting as the lone sauce, due to a hint of graininess to it.  Service was friendly, knowledgeable and available at the right times.  It might not be the most convenient location, but it's a quality one, and is several steps higher in both atmosphere and menu when compared to most of the pubs in Ottawa. read more

I used to pass by this restaurant every day for decades when I rode the bus into work in Ottawa way back when. Back then, it was called 'The Mill steakhouse' but I never made it in and have always wondered what it was like inside. It's a resplendent historic stone building perched on the river bank beside the interprovincial bridge. It's a very scenic location and is surrounded by bike paths and the downtown core. Well, today, I finally made it inside, and sorry, but it was a bit of a let down. When you walk in, you see an impressive huge copper brewing vat behind a plexiglass panel. Cool! But that's where the 'wow' factor ends. Inside is your typical, run of the mill, nothing really special, sports bar. You know, Tvs in every corner playing sports games. It's a guy place, complete with half price wings on a certain day of the week. Yes, it's a brew pub. I get it, but it's more of a sports bar vibe than anything else. If you're into that, great! You will love it. They do have a very small closed off section overlooking the water that I imagine would be awesome - but only a chosen few get to sit there. I wanted to have a look but I couldn't go in as it was occupied by a private group. The exterior has thankfully remained unchanged and they have a lovely outdoor patio that must be very pleasant in the summer. Now - let's get to the food. I had the fish and chips. I would rate my meal a 2.5 at best, out of five. They left the fish in the fryer too long and the batter was overdone and on the burned side and the fish itself was dry. The French fries looked a lot better than they tasted. They did not taste fresh. Unfortunately, they'd been cooked much earlier and had been sitting around for some time. They tasted old and were barely warm. My husband had the smoked duck salad with plums and he really enjoyed it. I have to say, I was impressed with the wide variety of menu selections. Pub fare, Moroccan falafal salad, smoked meat poutine, Malaysian curry, bami goreng and a mezze platter to name a few. I'm not, but if you're into wild meats, they even have a game meats tortiere and an elk burger. It's an ambitious menu. Our waitress was great and the food came out pretty quickly. I even got a little sample of their beer when I sat down and it was really good. I didn't explore their beer selections so I can't comment on that but hey, it's s brew pub so I'm sure they have some really good brews. We had such a good time here. 15-20 minute wait for a table on a Sunday night around 7. We got a flight at the bar - the flight pours are eight ounces each! I really liked the Whitespace wheat. For food, husband got tourtiere and was not disappointed. Also got soup, which was very rich and tasty, but not what he expected - it was descried as chicken and spinach, and it seemed to have chicken in it but in a beef broth. This was our first time in Ottawa so we really had no idea where we were going, what we were doing plus we had two young kids melting down and needed food STAT. Our expectations were low and Mill Street seemed almost too good to be true considering it's location and menu (my kids pretty much only eat fries). FORTUNATELY for us, we had an excellent experience. Great seating, great food and if you are lucky enough to get Josh as your server you will be happy even if the other elements don't come together. The price was reasonable considering it's so big city convenient and we are from the States so we think Canadian food prices are high anyway. Josh was high-fiving our two & four year old from the get go. They gave them free popsicles immediately, a kid menu with crayons (initially I feared it was too pubby for kids) AND he gave us travel advice for spots in Canada and even in the US. I was on a business trip in Ottawa with my manager, and we were looking for a decent place to have dinner. We weren't in the mood for anything too fancy, but wanted good quality. We were enthusiastically greeted by our eccentric waiter, Colin. After asking what the specials were, I was informed her that while everything at Mill Street brewpub is special, their feature for the evening was their homemade barbecue ribs, and a side of fries. Optional upgrades were a couple of different salad, or sweet potato fries. The ribs sounded very appealing, so it didn't take each of us long to decide that we were going to try the ribs with sweet potato fries. My boss ordered a standard kettle one martini, and I opted for a vanilla Pilsner. First came the drinks. The kettle one martini was a hashtag fail, it seemed as though they had simply poured a little bit of vodka into a glass, and stuck some limes along the rim. They had made no effort to chill the vodka whatsoever. Disappointing. The Vanilla Pilsner was actually quite pleasant, and I suppose it makes sense that a brewpub would have good beer. The ribs arrived and they were served on top of the sweet potato fries, leaving those poor little fries squished nearly to death. Hashtag fail on the sweet potato fries. The ribs were very over cooked, making them very dry and brittle on the ends, some parts were actually inedible. The homemade sauce actually wasn't too bad, I little bit spicy, but they put on way too much. Having a good sauce is useless if the ribs are garbage. Overall, a hashtag fail on the ribs. And then the bill arrived... $97 for a very mediocre dinner for two. Overall, on this visit, I found the Mill Street brewpub very over rated, and that has been my experience on other visits as well (to this and the Toronto locations.) I have had 1 great experience, so it seems like they are just not consistent with their service and food. This place is...alright. This review is based on the first and only time I've been so far (for lunch). The food was decent. I had the chicken pesto club sandwich, and the person I was with had the poutine. Once again, not bad, and not great, just pretty good. The service was okay, and almost stepped over the line to bad. Most of the time I felt as if we were forgotten. I hadn't seen our server for some time at one point, and the manager came out and served our food instead, and that's when our sever noticed us and decided to come back and ask if we wanted more water. Unfortunately, I, like many others, want to like this place. Great location for a pub and so much potential, yet it doesn't achieve anything amazing. The reason this is a 3 star review and not a 2 star is honestly the pricing. It was quite fair for lunch and is fair for what you get. So, if you just want a quick beer and some decent food, this place won't be that bad. This microbrewery has a great location and excellent venue. I had the Tankhouse Ale, Organic Lager and Belgian Wit. All seemed a bit on the flat to "watered down" side. Relative to Canada I am sure this is good, but not to my typical American West Coast microbrew standards. Cheers! read more
