We flew from Los Angeles to Jackson Hole for our anniversary and the sleigh ride and dinner was supposed to be a fun and romantic time. Instead, we found out that we were booked between two Christmas parties, which meant that there were a couple of hundred people in this facility! They served drinks, which is fine, but almost everyone was drunk on the sleigh ride and at one point we almost tipped over and someone almost fell out! The sleigh ride is basicly a lap around the property, which wasn't very pretty (you would think that it would be). We paid almost $200.00, which is a complete rip off! You are better off going on the Elk Sleigh ride and having dinner somewhere else. read more

Location map and address are completely inaccurate. Mill Iron Ranch is 10.5 miles south of Jackson and 1.5 miles east in the canyon. DG and I just came from there moments ago. Our friends, Chancy and Kim Wheeldon, own and operate this business. We did the 2 hour ride up the mountain. I actually led my horse up and back down, just because to settle a 'bucket list' thing of walking up and back down a good real mountain hill. And my pony loved the empty saddle walk!! Kim and Chancy then prepared an incredible T-Bone steak, ear corn and baked potato dinner for us. The kind of steak prep than cannot be found in ANY restaurant. Most wonderful day, amazing scenic ride and apparently the steepest uphill trail ride in the world horseback. Our group of 8, led by Chancy, had a memorable day and was fun for all. This is an experience that I have never had desire to do, horseback trail ride, but seemed like a right thing for today's downtime. And it was. This is a must do activity if you have the opportunity to visit Jackson Hole. Our guide Pete was very knowledgeable about the horses and matched each guest to the horse which complimented their personality. Not only is the 2000 foot elevation climb on horseback through the most breathtaking and beautiful countryside in America awe inspiring and incredible, but the T-bone steaks prepared to perfection at the exact time that you return to the lodge are amazing. My wife and I have been to The Drover in Omaha, Peter Luger in New York, The Chophouse in New Orleans, and Cut in Las Vegas. Wolfgang Puck cannot hold a candle to Chancy, the ranch owner, who intricately prepares your meal to coincide with your return. This was one of the best experiences of our lifetime!! read more

I highly recommend Mill Iron Ranch for horseback riding and enjoying the amazing views in and around Jackson, WY. I visited Jackson recently with family. We took the 4 hour ride with Mill Iron and it was one of the highlights of our vacation. It is a family owned and operated business with mom at the front desk, dad greeting riders as they head to the horses and brother & sister leading trail rides. Coby, or maybe it was Cody, was our guide. He did a great job of showing us some fabulous countryside and views. He was very sensitive watching out for those who don't like heights as we did get up pretty high along a ridge. The horses were very gentle but not boring. The first three hours were pure joy, the tough part was coming down at the end. By that time we were all a bit sore but it was all SO worth it!!! read more

Great horseback riding, incredible views, and off the wall steaks! We did the two hour ride, great climb up to 360 degree views of the surrounding area including Grand Teton, two other ranges, and the river. The accolades about the ride on various sites are legit, it's a standout trail ride. Good wildlife, too. The guides are solid, the horses are great, the trail is steep in a few places but it's a safe ride and the team at the ranch is very competent. Be honest about your abilities and they'll match you with the right horse. Even if you've never been on a horse you can do this and have fun. You come back and can then have a *really* great steak prepared by Chancey and a good dinner (there are other options but get the steak). It's a family operation, they're really good people. We had a terrific time at this ranch. This is a family-run operation, and everyone was wonderful! Coby drove the team of horses that pulled our sleigh through the deep snow and was so informative about nature, animals, the ranch, etc. Kim and Chancey were wonderful hosts at the large barn-type structure where we enjoyed a ranch dinner of T-bone steaks with all the usual side dishes. Sadie tended the full bar, and made sure we were all well taken care of. Kim knew this was a special birthday celebration, and had a cake with my husband's name on it. The whole family came out singing to him, and wowed us with their consistent efforts to make our time with them special. I highly recommend a visit to this ranch whether in the summer or winter. Let me preface this review by warning you of it's length. If you want the highlights go to the TLDR section at the bottom! I've now been on three horse rides in Arizona, California, and now here in Wyoming. This ride was by far my favorite. So, where to start?! Mill Iron Ranch is a spectacular choice if you're looking for a relaxed and informative horseback ride through the beautiful landscape of Jackson Hole. When you finally see Mill Iron Ranch on the horizon after taking the remote road into the "valley," You'll see a large number of horses roaming and feeding freely in the large grass field that surrounds the area. Parking isn't an issue, and if you arrive early don't sweat, you'll likely be fit in immediately. Once you pay and "sign your life away," you walk to a small gateway overlooking the ranch, where you'll be fitted to a horse that suits your riding experience, weight, and age. Every one of the family members and hired hands know all of the horses names (over one hundred of them) and their individual personalities and riding styles. This is critical in ensuring that everyone in your party has an enjoyable ride. My family signed up for the two hour ride, and we found it to be the perfect length. It started when we met our guide for the day, named Pete. Pete had a very layed back personality, and he wasn't afraid to get serious if a horse was acting up or if their was another problem. Throughout the ride, Pete informed us about how to position ourselves in the saddle with varying terrain as we ascended what I believe was 2,000 feet to the peak of the mountain which the ranch sits at the foot of. On the way up you'll see beautiful overlooks and plenty of nature. Don't worry about mosquitos, they were no problem for us. Our group was fairly small, consisting of about 10 riders and the guide. This was great because it led to entertaining conversations with Pete and a more intimate experience. Cameras are encouraged and you're welcome to take pictures during your ride. All saddles have pouches attached for you to store your phone or camera in. Our guide Pete stopped us at the peak of the mountain and took the time to position each group and their horses into a line, an he then took our cameras and took great pictures for us! The view is breathtaking and we now have it forever in picture form! Something about the entire ride was therapeutic, both relaxing and freeing of daily worries. It helped that all of the horses were well behaved and taken care of. TLDR: Amazing guides (Pete rocks!) I decided to book the 2 hr ride after looking at their high rating on tripadvisor and my girlfriend and I were very happy we did. Its run by a very friendly family and the ride itself was very beautiful. The ride climbs about 2000 ft in elevation and the view at the top was incredible. Our guide even took a picture with our camera at the top for us! Aside from the amazing, we had dinner with the family and other riders afterwards. I ordered the steak, which was one of the best Ive ever had, and my girlfriend ordered the salmon, which was also very tasty. Just took the family on two different Trail Rides. The 4 hour ride took us through spectacular mountain meadows, Aspen groves and and scenic overlooks. Its a long ride for a beginner like myself, it has lots of climbs....with a stunning view at the tip-top of the ridge. My daughter and neice loved it. I loved that the horses are so sure-footed. Awesome trip. The two hour ride takes you strait up the mountain. Gorgeous views. You feel like you went back in time to see what the old west looked like (and felt like). Great trip! The trail ride climbed 2000 feet up from the ranch, there are amazing views at the top. This is the best trail ride I have ever done. We LOVED our time at Mill Iron Ranch with Chancy, Kim and our guide, Dave. The experience surpassed our expectations! My adult daughters and I took the two hour late afternoon ride. We were delighted by the gorgeous scenery, the confidence we had in our guide and the good nature of the horses that were carrying us up over 2000 ft. The views cannot be captured by a mere photo... spectacular scenery all around! There were lots of breaks for pictures along the way and to give our horses a rest. All of the horses were calm, experienced animals with a gentle nature. My husband and son joined us for dinner at the Lodge afterward and what a treat that was! Chancy and Kim are delightful hosts! So accommodating and Chancy even indulged my husband in showing him the ropes at how to cook T-bone and Porterhouse steaks to perfection for a crowd! Chancy was loads of fun telling Dave stories about his experiences on the ranch and teaching him how to cook a steak like a real cowboy! Lots of fun and great memories were made! We went on a 2 hour trail ride on a Friday morning. The ranch was easy to find and was absolutely beautiful. Right away the staff was helpful, accommodating, and very funny! (Ask about why they have so many bunnies!) The horses were well broken and easy to handle. Our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and eager to help whenever one of our group dropped something or needed to remove a layer. She also took incredible pictures of our group on top of the mountain! If I'm ever in Jackson again, this trail ride will definitely be on my list. read more

Had a great 1//2 day ride with Coby as our guide. Saw a black wolf along the way and saw the wolf den as well. Scenery was great, and my horse Sis was, well, let's just say willful. Things you need to know...strict weight enforcement. Spouse is 6' 4.5" tall and weighs just over 230. We weren't allowed to do a full day ride because of his size so we did a half-day ride instead which was about right. Staff was great (Kim the scheduling lady is an acquired taste) and we thoroughly enjoyed the ride. read more

Amazing! A MUST on any trip to Jackson. A short drive south of town and tucked off the main road. Like the other review we were nicely welcome and set up on our horses for a 4 hour ride. The highlight was the AMAZING VIEWS from the top. Our guide, Justin, was very helpful and knowledgable about the wildlife and the area. We saw deer, coyote and elk. The 4 hour ride was challenging with lots of up and down but worth it. Our group included 1 adult and 2 children and all of us will remember this as the highlight of the trip!!! read more

I would highly recommend Mill Iron Ranch!!! First of all, before booking I called and spoke to Sadie about our 8 year old daughter who tends to get anxiety in new situations. She had never been trail riding before, so I wanted to let them know ahead of time that my daughter might be a little apprehensive. Sadie reassured me that they would take the time to make sure she was ok with everything... Fast forward to today they were amazing! They remembered my concerns and every staff member made my daughter feel really safe and excited for our ride! While also booking, I mentioned that it was going to be my little boy's 7th birthday! They went above and beyond!! We paid extra for the steak dinner (which I'll write more about) and while we were eating, they brought out a birthday cake with his name, candles and everything!! The staff sang happy birthday too! He was on cloud nine! Now let's talk about the Steak Dinner... Best steak I've ever tasted! They cook it to your liking and it was amazing! Seasoned to perfection and freshly cut that day! It included perfectly tender baked potatoes, corn on the cob, rolls, salad, soda, and dessert! Loved the extra touch of ringing the dinner bell too!! The entire family was just as friendly as can be and made sure we were satisfied with everything! We left feeling very satisfied! First, let me say I very rarely write reviews for anything. But our experience at Mill Iron Ranch was amazing. Some things to note if you choose the 2-hour ride...1. Kim will weigh you on the scale. It's for the safety of the animals as they are carrying you up 2,000 feet. 2. They will choose a horse specifically for you. My horse was B.B. and she was so sweet. I was terrified mostly because I read reviews about the terrain. About that...the paths are narrow, rocky and sometimes on the edge of the cliff. But the horses are smart animals and know what they're doing. Chase was our guide and he dealt with my nervousness and anxiety so well. He teased me but always made sure I felt safe and secure. There are some spots near the top that are very steep with a sharp drop to your right. He made sure we all knew what was about to happen before we made the last climb. You descend down a different path. It's much less steep but it requires a lot of leg and back strength. We had an amazing time and the views from the top were worth being so scared. You can take water, cameras, etc. there is a place to keep all of it while on the horse. Kind of goes without saying but sunscreen is necessary. read more

My daughter was actually scared of Horses. After the 2 hour trip, our guide Colby, was awesome with her. She wasn't afraid and had a great experience. The views were stunning. I was really blown away by this amazing experience. My husband and I did a 2 hour ride wrapping up with a steak dinner in Early June, 2019. First, it's gorgeous scenery. The 360 views from the top of the mountain are unreal. Our guide, Evan, was very knowledgeable about horses, ranch operations and the surrounding forest and its inhabitants. The horses are well cared for, sure footed and well trained. What really blew me away was the hospitality of the Mill Iron Ranch family after the ride. Chancy and Kim are AMAZING. Chancy cooked up wonderful, PERFECTLY cooked, HUGE steaks accompanied by salad, baked potatoes, corn, rolls and wonderful chocolate dessert. Honestly, it was the best meal we had during our week long visit to Jackson, and the best value. Kim and Chancy are so genuine and welcoming...they really made us feel like part of the family. My wife and I recently took a 2-hour ride at Mill Iron Ranch and had a fantastic experience. MIR is located just a short 20-minute drive from Jackson and sits on a beautiful property in the mountains. The ranch staff was extremely polite and professional. Even though we don't have a lot of riding experience, they made us feel very comfortable the entire time. The ride went through beautiful wooded areas and ended at the top of a mountain with great views of the Tetons and the Hole. Our guide, Justin, was terrific; he was knowledgeable and very responsive to the questions/needs of the riding group. Finally, we were lucky enough to witness a recently-born colt take his first steps on the ranch. Mill Iron Ranch offered our family (Quackenbush--if you folks at MIR are reading this) and the family we were traveling with, with the most amazingly enjoyable trail ride experience. Nothing prepared me for the gorgeous sweeping vistas that we encountered once we had scaled the lovely mountainside. Every minute was fabulous. All of us--including an eight-year-old--were atop well-behaved, sweet horses and guided by the fabulous Pete, who went out of his way to make sure we all had a great time. Make sure you haven't eaten all day to tackle the absolutely HUGE, delicious dinner you will be served. My steak, perfectly cooked, with all the fixings and dessert, could have easily fed three hungry people. The entire crew was kind and friendly and aimed to please. The owner, whose family homesteaded the ranch, visited every table to talk to everyone and make sure we were all happy. If I could give this place 10 stars I would. I can't believe that I found Mill Iron Ranch by driving by a small sign on the road. These folks need to advertise by billboard. So pleased! read more

I took a sleigh ride on Christmas Eve at the Mill Iron Ranch. The staff was so incredibly friendly! I arrived early and they were more than happy to serve me drinks from the bar and entertain me with conversation. I told the woman working there that I was on a few wait lists for activities such as dog sledding and snow shoeing. She was kind enough to make calls on my behalf to see if she could find any availability! After the sleigh ride, I stayed to enjoy a fantastic steak dinner. They are not joking when they boast the best steak you have ever had - it was delicious. The entire evening was perfect. They had live country music, good food, great bar, nice people, all accompanied by animal head decor and old west motif - this place is amazing if you like a rustic, log cabin feel.
