Not transparent with billing and lack of communication by Dr Severance and billing personnel…read more I went to this office expecting a regular dental cleaning. I was never told before or during the appointment that I was receiving a periodontal cleaning or that it could result in an additional out-of-pocket charge. After the appointment, I was charged $75. I contacted my health insurance and confirmed that I have coverage for two dental cleanings per year and that this dentist is in-network. I then contacted the office to find out why I was being charged. I spoke with Maria in billing, who told me that the reason for the $75 charge was because I had a deep cleaning last year and Dr. Severance determined that today's cleaning was a periodontal cleaning. My concern is that Dr. Severance never explained this to me. Nobody told me that my cleaning was being classified differently, why it was medically necessary, or that I would have an additional $75 charge. Had I been told beforehand that I was not receiving a standard cleaning and that there would be an additional cost, I could have asked questions, contacted my insurance, and made an informed decision before the procedure was performed. What makes this particularly frustrating is that the cleaning itself did not seem any different from a regular cleaning. I'm now having to spend my own time contacting the dental office and Cigna to figure out why I was charged for a service I was never informed I was receiving. I understand that insurance coverage and dental treatment can be complicated, and I understand that a dentist may determine that periodontal maintenance is appropriate. What I don't understand is why I wasn't informed before the procedure and given the opportunity to understand the treatment and potential cost. I would strongly recommend asking exactly what procedure is being performed and what your expected out-of-pocket cost will be before agreeing to a cleaning at this office.

He clearly wants to keep you in the loop so you are able to make informed decisions about your dental care. He doesn't tell you what you need to do, as if he were selling something. It shows how much he cares about making the kids feel comfortable. This dentist is the most honest one I've been to. When I had some toothache, I saw 2 other dentists and they were quick to tell me to pull my teeth and charge over 1k. Dr. Amir didn't do that. He checked my teeth and discovered 12 small cavities. Based on the x-rays, he said I could just have them filled in and he charged only several hundred (with insurance). I was skeptical that it worked, but after the one month recovery, my teeth felt great and everything was back to normal. My teeth feel great now, a year later. I am still considering pulling my wisdom, but he says I don't have to do that until they hurt. He doesn't rush me into anything and gives me the options so I can save money, while having healthy teeth! He stands by his work and will not do anything that won't leave you satisfied or his reputation in doubt. My nephew had a chipped tooth and I recommended Dr. Amir first. After a consultation, Dr. Amir recognized that he couldn't do the type of work required due to the severity of the chip so he recommended my nephew to another dentist. My issue is entirely with the front office and billing process. At my first appointment, the office couldn't verify my dental insurance because they were using the wrong insurance portal. I ended up spending a significant portion of my appointment on the phone with United Concordia, walking the office staff through how to verify my coverage. Because of the delay, they only had time to complete the exam, and I had to schedule a second appointment for my cleaning. Later, I received another call saying my referral only covered a limited exam, but they had scheduled and performed a comprehensive exam instead. I provided my referral before the appointment and again when I checked in. If the referral didn't authorize the services they planned to perform, that should have been identified before my appointment, not after the services were completed. Now I'm being told I may be responsible for charges if the referral isn't updated, even though this was something the office could have addressed beforehand. To make matters more frustrating, I contacted United Concordia and learned they hadn't even submitted the claim yet, despite telling me there could be issues with coverage. When I asked to speak with an office manager to resolve my concerns, I was told they don't have one. The clinical care was excellent, which is why I'm not giving one star. However, the front office's handling of insurance, referrals, and billing created unnecessary stress and multiple extra phone calls. I hope they improve their administrative processes because the providers themselves deserve a much better support team.
