This spring and summer we've…read moreenjoyed some very tasty foods, dishes prepared and served with a consistency that we felt had been lacking a bit over the last year or two. For us, the "star" dish is shrimp and grits, in large part because these folks know how to prepare cheesy grits. They are cooked just right, not dry, not runny, very flavorful, and supporting a bed of big, yummy fried shrimp with a sprinkling of spinach on top. An excellent dish! But, so are the fish and chips, the French fries (they cook 'em crispy they way we prefer), and ... well, we haven't been disappointed at all. The young servers are friendly, the bar offers up some good, sweet treats, and the seating is under a well-protected tent outdoors and indoors since they are now a year-round operation. We think the prices are fair given the quality of food and the overall dining experience, which we'd label casual, or perhaps informal. Please note the parking area can get very crowded especially on weekends, so be prepared.

The menu is seafood oriented,bl but with an amazing number of old school favorites like Lobster Rolls and Jerk Chicken. I had a Connecticut Style Lobster Roll (hot with butter) that had a generous amount of lobster and included one of my favorite things..... homemade potato chips that were excellent and freshly made. The wife had a selection of olives as an appetizer. This venue is a happening l experience during the Summer months with an abundance of outdoor seating and some interesting play areas for kids of all ages. Our visit was highlighted by our servers, bartender Bella and waitperson Caitlyn, who helped keep the party going with their upbeat attitudes and attention to customer service. Our first of many visits was wonderful and we'll certainly be back.

There were four of us and the bartender said they were short staffed, so we were ready to be patient, however the entire night it was just us and one or two other tables, which should have been more than manageable even with limited staff. The bartender took our initial drink orders quickly and brought the drinks quickly, so that was a plus. We ordered two appetizers, fried mozzarella and a small Caesar salad. It took forever to get the two appetizers, and our server had come back to take our dinner order before the appetizers even arrived. We did get bread with butter and dipping oil before the apps arrived, but no plates, napkins or silverware, we had to hunt out server down to get those. I had decided on penne a la vodka, which came with a salad. So I said, well I already ordered the Caesar salad, can that be my dinner salad? Sure, he says. (Fast forward to the end, nope, I was charged $8.95, so never got my free salad with dinner. Sure it was bigger, but a) I would have been fine with the dinner size, since they had not brought it yet and b) if you give me the larger one maybe upcharge me $3 or $4 instead of the full $8.95. Nope.) My friend who also ordered a dinner that came with a salad ordered a Caesar with no upcharge. The others in my group ordered a chicken parmesan grinder, penne a la vodka with chicken, and a Philly cheesesteak on a roll instead of a grinder, ordered as just steak and cheese on a roll, nothing else, and fries. Our appetizers came, fried mozzarella was lukewarm at best. Surprising since it took so long that it wasn't hot. Caesar salad was good, sadly it was the best thing I ate all night. Entrees started to arrive. Chicken parm grinder and cheesesteak arrive first. Then we see our server serving the only other table of people, multiple back and forth trips while not coming back with the rest of our food. Chicken parm grinder was dry, so we were waiting to ask for a side of sauce. Cheesesteak was made with mushrooms and some sort of gravy, so was waiting to be sent back since it was not as ordered. Several minutes later, the two penne a la vodka dishes show up. These were piping hot. We ask for the sauce and send the "cheesesteak" back, still no mention of the fries. The penne a la vodka was hot, but was more like penne with marinara, and not really worth the $19.95 price tag. Thank goodness for Parmesan on the table. Cheesesteak comes back, still missing the fries, mushrooms gone, but random gravy sauce still there, and it was not hot. It sort of looked and smelled like beef stew on a roll. One slice of white cheese melted on the top part of the roll. I wish I got a photo of it. My friend took one bite, and sent it back again. She finally got the fries, but was too annoyed to eat more than a couple. When the bill came, we found out that the crappy chicken on the penne a la vodka was a $9 up charge. Their prices are not substantiated by the quality of food or service (or lack thereof). Toward the end of our time there, a large crowd of people emerged from the kitchen and started walking behind the bar and then sat at the bar. We weren't sure if they worked there, or were friends of the people working there, but service all but stopped at that point. We weren't offered any additional drinks or anything. If you're telling people you're stressed because you're understaffed, maybe don't invite 10 of your friends to come hang out to further distract you from your 7-8 paying customers. I know this place changed owners and names due to some criminal activity related to the prior owner. Google Bachi's if you want more details. But the new Giovanni's is lacking in service and quality, and prices are too high for what you're served. Not that I'm in Torrington that often anyway, but I wouldn't come back, and wouldn't recommend Giovanni's if you're in the area, unless you just want to stop in for a drink.

They were good and our server Matt was on top of things even though it was a busy Saturday night. My wife had the lobster roll and said it was buttery and tender, but I can't comment since she wouldn't share it with me. I had the King Crab special, and as I commented to our server, I have paid a lot more ($55) for a lot less (4 legs) that were meaty and great texture you only get with King Crab. We left very happy. It is rare to find "king crab " and good value in the same place.

As soon as you start to stray into other dishes, the restaurant starts to lose its appeal. A buffalo chicken wrap was drowning in sauce. My lobster roll, which I came here specifically for based on other reviews, arrived at the table and I started laughing my head off. The bun was maybe at best 2/3 the size of a hot dog bun and had probably half a chicken lobster worth of lobster... it at that. I doubt it even reached 4oz, and with a side of fries, market price was $30. I felt completely ripped off. I've gone to Abbots at the shore of the Sound, and their roll cost the same but was about double the contents and I didn't leave hungry. $30 and I was lucky that I ordered an appetizer to fill in the gap in my stomach. Indoors is dark and not really inviting, but the patio was quite nice. Initially one server was covering half a dozen tables so service was quite slow, but when a couple others showed up to take the slack, things started moving for everyone. Overall... if you want a fried seafood platter-- it's great. But anything else... look elsewhere.

To be clear, I doubt people think "Winsted CT" is a foodie destination, but if you stop at Mario's Tuscany Grill, it will be from that point forward. Starting at the top, there is plenty of parking on the street. This area of Main Street Winsted is actually ok for a little walk on the sidewalk. Once inside Mario's, the staff is very warm and friendly, showing you to a table quickly. The dining room has ample space, you do not feel crowded. The menu is amazing, on previous visits the Seafood Combination and Chicken Milanese is simply perfect and delicious with an ample portion! Here's where it gets even weirder and BETTER. If you visit their Facebook page, you see pictures of amazing platters of food. YET!, that isn't on the menu. So I asked the very friendly waiter, "how do we do these platters?".. He simply said, tell me what you want! My friend and I collaborated, and said "start with steak gorzonzola".. Ok, then what? "Well Some Clams", "how many?" Me: "I dont know,a dozen?" "that enough?", Me: "No of course not" Waiter: "What else?" Me: "well, some scallops, some shrimp, and more clams".. Waiter replies, "Ok, we'll make it nice" .. "Nice" has to be the understatement of the year. This platter comes out, Steak Gorgonzola, flanked with 18 clams, half a dozen scallops, grilled shrimp, asparagus, Caprese tomato salad.. it was unbelievable.. Everything was cooked to perfection, the presentation was absolutely outrageous, and it was incredibly delicious!! If comfort had an address, it would be Mario's. We always kick things off with a small pizza for the table, because that's the law here. The bread and tomato relish? Should be sold by the gallon. I would pay an irresponsible amount of money for it. If you know, you know. Last night's table lineup was elite: * One of us ordered the veal Neapolitan -- fresh, tender veal in a vodka sauce so good it should have its own fan club. * Another went for the penne alla vodka with shrimp and scallop, which was hands‑down the best dish of the night. The seafood takes an already top‑tier vodka sauce and somehow makes it even better. As a Jersey boy, I don't say that lightly. * I decided to go rogue and step outside my usual penne vodka or steak. I wanted veal parm. I've never had anything fried here besides the calamari (which is amazing), so I figured: why not? Here's the plot twist: The veal parm was the only dish I've ever had at Mario's that didn't hit the usual Mario's standard. The veal itself was totally different from the fresh, delicious cut in the Neapolitan, and the breading had a little... funk. Almost like it had been prepped ahead and picked up a freezer‑burn vibe. Not bad -- just not Mario's‑level magical. But here's the thing: One imperfect dish doesn't change the fact that Mario's is one of our all‑time favorite restaurants. The atmosphere, the people, the consistency, the warmth -- it's all unbeatable. We love this place and will absolutely be back, probably embarrassingly soon. Mario's is home. Even when one dish misses, the experience never does.
