It's unfortunate that I have to leave this review because they actually did a good job on my backyard. I hired him to install artificial turf. He was more expensive than the three other quotes that I got but I went with him because he said his method was better than what the other guys offer. It was right before the freezes started. He told me that they had left my sprinkler system winter ready (draining and purging my sprinkler lines) so I took his word for it and didn't bother to drain my sprinkler lines myself as I do every year. When the freeze came some of my lines snapped as they were not properly drained. Once Mike (the owner) found out about it he refused to answer my calls. I emailed, texted, called and left several msgs and he never once called back. I had to hire a plumber to come replace the broken brass and replace some pvc pipes. This should have been warrantied but obviously it was not. Extremely poor customer service and definitely will not back up any of his work. Watch out with this guy, once he gets your money he's gone. read more

I used Mike Ball Irrigation in the past with good results and I thought they were fair with their prices. But a recent experience I had was not what I expected. I had MBI perform some minor repairs and thinking I was getting competitive prices I requested a quote for more repairs and I was given a quote for $814. I thought that was too high so I sent the serviceman an email asking why the quote was so high but received no response. So I chose another reputable sprinkler service and the charge for essentially the same work was $538. That's $275 cheaper than Mike Ball Irrigation. The sprinkler parts would basically be the same so MBI's labor cost is much higher. That's a major difference, one I'm not willing to pay. read more

Everything went great from the beginning of the process of the design layout, meeting up to pick out material, and through out the project. Part way through this whole mess of a pandemic, I was walking through my yard and realized that a whole section of my grass was dying. I ran through the zones and found that one of them had just up and quit. I messaged Mike Ball Irrigation through Yelp, and they were quick to respond and set up a time for Angel to come out and take a look. I mentioned to him that we had some COVID concerns and I'd be wearing a mask, and he also masked up to keep our family safe! He was kind, responsive, and crazy efficient. I loved Mike Ball Irrigation's response time, follow up and care they took with my landscape project. I spoke with approx. 4 other landscape services/designers in the Richmond area. This company was professional, answered all my questions and even suggested a few things to considered. They incorporated my vision of what I had in mind with their many years of experience in the landscape business/design. The lead foreman assured me "we are going to make it look really nice", and that is exactly what they did and more. The final transformation was amazing. They did a great job rerouting a few underground sprinkler lines in order for plants to get efficient watering levels. The crew was polite, cleaned up afterwards and worked very hard throughout the day to get their work done on schedule. I highly recommend using this company. I live in Del Webb in Richmond and I have noticed their company trucks many times since my project was complete. I also chked out their BBB rating and Google reviews before hiring them. I plan on having them back out before summer to freshen up mulch before the heat arrived again. BTW- My landscape was completed around the Christmas holidays and not a plant died! I chose MBI because of their high rating on Yelp, but did not have a 5 star experience myself during our fair sized landscaping project with them this spring. Pros: The team did a great job with hardscaping. The used a subcontractor to install a beautiful cedar fence around our property and used their own crew to install a nice pergola in our back garden. They did a great job powerwashing all of the concrete and stone - looks like new. Cons: Much of their approved drainage, irrigation repairs/alterations, and landscaping had to be redone by a second vendor shortly after MBI completed their work. MBI left us with rotted sod - twice - that had to be removed along with 6" of soil underneath. The drainage system MBI left us with had to be dug out and a new system installed to properly clear rainwater from our back yard to the street. Irrigation installed by MBI added to our problem by putting even more water into the back yard and had to be removed and redone. Finally, topiary trees we'd had for 12 years were left misshapen by an MBI crew and had to be removed and replanted by another vendor. Overall, some parts of the job were great, but many things were not and required another vendor to fix. read more

They came this morning and Gave us a very reasonable bid for a new component. They installed the new system quickly and took the time to instruct my husband and myself on downloading the app as well as how to use the system. Mike Ball irrigation was recommended by a friend. I called and spoke with John. John was careful to explain costs and policies so there'd be no surprises. Two days later, Angel came to repair our sprinkler system. He worked quickly, found the problem and promptly fixed it. I also asked for a general inspection of the system. That's the cue for most companies to start jacking up the price. Angel didn't bite. Made a few minor adjustments, replaced a drip head or two for better flow control and was gone in 1 1/2 hours. And there was some serious digging to get to my leaking pipe line. Very fair price. And I'm very satisfied with the work. I knocked off a star, because the appt was for 8:30-9am. Angel didn't arrive til after 10:45. Seems Mike decided to call a staff meeting. Hey, he's the boss. But knowing there was an appointment being delayed, someone should have called as a courtesy. read more

These guys are amazing... Mike came out and made some fantastic suggestions during the bid process. he was about in the middle on price, but his reviews on Home Advisor were excellent. He was booked about 6 weeks out which is always good. they just finished the job today and I am amazed. the pavers look amazing. the french drains and sprinkler system are awesome. they even replaced sod that was slightly disturbed by the install. That amazed me as I have had many sprinkler systems installed and no one ever cared for my property like they did. The foreman, Angel, was awesome. He knows his stuff and they did an amazing clean-up to boot. I recommend them very highly!! They are on my permanent contractor list for all my rentals and my personal home. THESE GUYS ARE AMAZING!!! I again recently used this business and I'm not sure what happened, but this business is the absolute worst at communication. Someone would tell me they were coming and they didn't show. I would request help on issues with the project itself and was ignored numerous times. My front yard sprinkler broke down and was shooting water everywhere. It was a major waste of water on the street. I called Mike late at night and not only he called back, but he was able to squeeze me in next morning so my grass wouldn't continue to die from lack of water (I had to replace the grass earlier this summer bc it was all dead). Some companies might have indicated that it was more a more complicated repair and charged more, but he only charged the base inspection fee and fixed the problem on the spot. Highly recommended! Before we moved in to our current home, we had a company come in and sell us "their solution to our problems". After spending a lot of money with them, we still never used it -for almost 5 years. With two large dogs, poor drainage resulted in mud and dirt everywhere, we couldn't grow grass because of the dogs urine killing it (plus their scratching after doing their business). Due to a few large trees we couldn't even grow ground cover around the trees, resulting in more mud. For hardscapes, we had two different patio slabs and dated pavers. This spring I had three companies come look and quote a compete rework of the area. Mike came up with a useful design that looks gorgeous, is functional for both people and our dogs, completely solved the drainage issues! Beautiful pavers, artificial turf, limestone retaining walls for the trees and a garden area with landscape lighting and reworked sprinkler system! We LOVE our back yard now, and use it daily. Because his pricing was so good, I even had money left in the budget for his company to replace our old mailbox with a brick one with planting beds surrounding it. We recently purchased a home and inherited a rundown backyard that needed a complete overhaul.
