Went in for a standard state inspection. Was told to wait in my car. I waited for 15 minutes. I then went inside where I was told their machine was down & would need to wait 5 more minutes. I then waited 30 minutes to be told they couldn't complete the inspection. I drove 10 minutes down the road to Larry's & successfully passed inspection in 10 minutes. It cost me 45 minutes to learn to never return to this shop. read more

10/10 customer service. I drove from Austin to Houston and my Nissan broke down on the way in the middle of the highway - very scary experience! As soon as I got to Houston I looked for a reputable mechanic within walking distance from where I was staying. First thing next morning I called Midtown Auto Service and Repair and Mikey suggested I drop it off for a diagnostic scan ASAP. Mikey was extremely helpful and took his time to explain the issues with my car. The issue was bigger than I thought (transmission failure :( ), but Mikey did a great job of talking me through it and explaining what my options were considering I'd have to drive back to Austin. He also got back to me super fast (within a couple of hours of me dropping it off), which I really appreciate! If you are having any issues with your car and don't know where to start, I suggest bringing it first thing to Midtown Auto - you'll get answers, and if not, at least a plan of action to help get you back on the road. Fair and honest pricing. I used to always come here in college and after trying a few other places this will be the last stop! A few things that I noticed are clear indicators that service is consistently top notch: -Customer waiting in the lobby said "Oh that was quick! I come here because it is conveniently located near my house. It is a little more expensive, but on par with other repair shops in the city. E.g. labor $220 vs. $179 to replace an alternator. The main thing that irks me is that the diagnostic fee of $99.50 is not waived if you choose to get your car fixed there. I'm not sure if this is now the standard for all shops. I recently moved to Houston and needed my car's AC checked out because it was making a noise. The business owner works the front desk. I walked in, was quickly taken care of and my car was off w the mechanic within 10 min. They ran diagnostics but of course that day my car decided not to make any noise. After 6 hours of trying they called me back and told me. The owner refused to let me pay him because he said it was diagnostics and they didn't diagnose anything so it wouldn't be fair business. He was an honest guy. I will 100% go back for any car concerns. read more

I called Midtown Auto as soon as they opened as I needed a last minute State Inspection. Mikey answered and invited me in at 8:30am no appointment needed. He was helpful, letting me know the cost (note, cash is required for state inspections). The shop is conveniently located and I found the place easily. I was greeted by Mikey, who is the owner, and he got me right in and his team started working on my inspection right away. My drivers rail signal was out and they let me know right away so I wouldn't fail the inspection. Their prices were cheaper compared to other auto shops in the area. Also, they are a family owned and operated business which is also a plus and have been around for a long time so that speaks volumes. Great people, great service! Cons: Charged me $209 for tire rotation and diag. Tried to sell me new struts (the ones on the car are new, I installed them) then said oh no, I meant the rear struts (those are shocks, not struts, you know what you meant). I guess he assumed the front needed to be replaced since the back were OEM. Total with labor, $1240 for a tire rotation and AC condenser replacement. You can get that done for half that all day. I should have gone somewhere else. Pros: They do good work, if you're willing to pay the premium. read more

I have an older car that recently completely died on the way to work. I had it towed to Midtown Auto (having never been before) and spoke to the owner, Mike. Prepared to spend hundreds$$$ to get back up and running, I dropped the car off and expected the worst. Hours later, to my satisfaction Mike called and explained that while there were several high-dollar issues I could fix, 1) it wasn't worth it given the age and mileage of the vehicle, and 2) a much less expensive (I'm talking $40) solution could get me up and running for a while longer. I went with option 2, and he didn't even charge me a diagnostic fee! It's been over a month and a half, and the car appears fine. Mike knows his stuff, and based on my experience at his shop I can say he's more interested in doing good/honest work to grow and retain his client base, rather than to do unnecessary work to pad his pocket book. I'll be back next time my car dies, and hopefully he will save me some money again! read more

In my initial review stating I wish I had known that an inspection was $25.50 cash only before I went there, the owner commented something nice along the lines of "I can give you a credit of $25.50, please message me". I simply left it because I didn't want to do business with them, I had already gotten my car inspected. Now, a few weeks later, he edited the reply with a nearly aggressive comment about how they have signs everywhere stating they are cash only for inspecting (untrue, it was only on the door as you are walking in), and how it is "tiring" to be written negatively about due to the same issue. But then, he messaged me apologizing and stated again he can give me a credit through PayPal or something. In one of the other low reviews, she states his obsession over getting a 5 star review and how he tried to bribe her and called her 5 times to get it. I am starting to get that vibe. Along with all of his comments back to people who post a negative review are slightly aggressive if you read them, he essentially argues back to everybody with a negative tone. Also, if people are constantly writing negative reviews over the same thing (cash only inspections) then why not change it? Other places take debit/credit cards. Just a suggestion. read more

I do not trust this shop. This was my first visit and I will never go here again. I paid approximately $500 for AC diagnostic, Freon recharge, and dye to discover why the AC was cold only on the passenger side on my 5 year old car. After injecting dye and recharging the Freon, the AC made a hissing noise and the Freon ran out in about an hour. The AC had never hissed before. My car was kept at the shop for three days while the dye was "washed off" to find the leaks. The shop manager said that I had a large leak and a small leak and that it would cost $709.44 for parts, labor, dye, and Freon to repair the large leak. He recommended that I repair the large leak first to make it easier to find the second leak. His usual friendly demeanor became hostile when I insisted on getting the estimate in writing and asked for the hourly labor cost. He handed me an estimate which had blanks where the parts and labor costs should have been. He took the paper from me and illegibly scribbled the prices after I attempted to write down the details myself. The next day, I took my car to a different mechanic for a second opinion and that shop manager showed me that the valve was missing from inside the AC high pressure port. That shop replaced the valve for free and charged me only to install Freon. My car was repaired in less than an hour and the AC has been working fine ever since. read more

Brought my car in to get it fixed and was told I needed to come back later on for another part to fix another issue. Ended up going to another mechanic to get another quote and was told that they tried to scam me and almost ended up paying 25x more than what I paid to fix the issue. They purposely unscrewed a hose in my engine so that I would have to come back and pay over 4k to get it fixed in an almost new car. Unbelievable, never coming back I would NEVER reccomend this place. read more

The friendliest, fastest, and fairest auto mechanic shop In Houston. Phenomenal service at a reasonable price! Midtown Auto is good as gold. I had a major break leak that required immediate repair. The manger personally diagnosed the issue and repaired the problem. I was expecting to be without a car all weekend, but my car was ready the same day! The price was reasonable. The work is warranted. The mechanics are efficient. I never felt like I was being taken advantage of or overcharged. I was always treated with respect. When you walk in the office, you immediately feel like you are hiring a locally owned and family run business with honest and hardworking mechanics. The owner told me about some additional problems that required attention. But, he never tried to scare me into fixing the issue. He honored my budget. He even complemented my older truck, which made me feel good. I plan to take my car back in a few weeks to have some more work done. I have found my forever mechanic.
