This is a very small, very quaint place. One person served as hostess, waitress and chef. She pulls it off very well. The best Bib bim bop I've ever had was back in Naperville IL. This was close. Since we moved back to CT we've been searching for a good Korean restaurant. This is the second one we've tried. Our search may be over. Good food, good friendly service at a fair price. We were there on a Thursday and they were very slow. They deserve to be busier.

I love Korean food. I REALLY love Korean food. And I keep waiting for Korean food to have it's Moment. You know, the kind of moment that turns into me being able to get legit, delicious, actual Korean food somewhere other than NYC. So, I was going to be driving down through Connecticut on an all day/night round trip from Central Vermont to JFK and back. Obviously, I needed to eat, but I also wanted a really good meal. Spoiler Alert: I ALWAYS want a really good meal. So I took to Yelp to check out my options. I was looking for Korean. Midori was listed as a Korean and Japanese restaurant with a pretty extensive Korean menu and, judging from my perusal of some of the more recent views there, the restaurant changed ownership in the past year. The current Midori does not serve sushi, but does have Korean and Japanese dishes. If you are vegetarian or vegan you are, unfortunately, out of luck here. I don't eat beef, pork or poultry, so it was a little challenging for me. Also because it was HOT HOT outside and I couldn't face eating a soup/noodle dish or Soondubu (which I LOVE in colder weather...) But I was still able to find multiple dishes to try. In fact, I was served so much food I could not finish it. Which is SAYING SOMETHING for me!! First, may I say, Midori is PRECISELY the kind of place I want to support. It appears to be entirely run by one woman who is doing everything right in front of you. As in the limited kitchen is right behind the counter. The entire space is just a storefront in a little strip mall. I LOVE to see someone hustling and working to own their own spot and do everything from scratch. When I got to Midori, late afternoon on a Tuesday in July, I was the only customer. And despite the fact that the (presumed) owner was my waitress and cook, service was spot on. This isn't fine dining folks. So take those pretensions elsewhere. There is no alcohol. You don't come here for drinks. There also is no Banchan, despite some misleading pics and comments online. You can get two little, plastic cups with kimchi and pickles in place of Banchan. But I'm still not willing to deduct any points because I codlin't have eaten Banchan even if she'd served me some. I ordered 4 things: Tteokbokki appetizer (rice cake with noodles, fish cake and vegetables in spicy broth); Kimchi Kimbap (fish sausage, stir fried kimchi, Korean pickled radishes); side of Kimchi; and Gyoza Salad (fried Gyoza tossed with green salad and delicious dressing). Full Disclosure: I've eaten A LOT of Korean food in my life, but I'd never eaten Tteokbokki and only once had I eaten Kimbap (which, if you know, is sort of like a Futomaki, but very Korean and different flavor profile - i.e., HIGHLY sesame rice when done authentically). The Tteokbokki arrived first and was HUGE. Like a full dinner sized plate full of The Most Delicious food and sauce. It was so freaking big I referred back to my menu because I figured it couldn't actually be an appetizer. LOL It was DELICIOUS. On every level. Different, delightful textures and mouthfeel, fabulous and spicy sauce. I tried to pace myself. But I'd already eaten the entire container of Kimchi (served in a plastic, half pint "to go" container - check your pretensions at the door!), even though I tried not to... Since my first Kimbap ever was very meh, I was reluctant to order it. Also Kimbap is BIG. You get ONE Kimbap. (Not like Japanese sushi rolls where you order a bunch.) But I was super curious about "fish sausage" and I LOVE pickled radishes. I was NOT disappointed. That Kimbap was FANTASTIC. The owner/chef told me I should dip it in my Tteokbokki sauce and she'd given me extra sauce. GOOD TIP!! Although You don't need to dip her Kimbap in anything. You can just eat it piece by delicious piece and savor the flavors of each one. SO GOOD. The Gyoza Salad is, frankly, pretty genius: a mixed salad with very tasty sesame type dressing tossed with fried Gyoza. Get your veggies AND a delicious, tasty dish. I LOVED my meal at Midori. I LOVE to see a woman owning and running her own place and serving up food and food knowledge. I hope she gets so busy she has to hire waitstaff!! I can't wait to when I can get back. Hopefully after these temps cool back off and I can order some Soondubu or a huge bowl of noodles!! Support small, independent businesses. Support women entrepreneurs. Order things you've never had before and be open to try things again that maybe you thought weren't fabulous the first time you had them. Support independent restaurants and give them the "space" to be their own kind of great. I had such a HUGE smile on my face when I left Midori. I hope you do too!!

All I can say is we ordered Korean Fried Chicken and was handed CHICKEN NUGGETS - you can't make this stuff up - STUNNED and EMBARRASSED at the ridiculousness of this establishment Fried Chicken ‍

Midori used to be our ultimately favorite place to eat. We love the previous owners who was always consistent with their dishes. We always order the combination udon without fail to the point that the lady owner knows what I was going to order. It's sad to see that my favorite dish is no longer the same. They have changed owners but they should learn from the previous owner what made them successful. Now they gave me only one tempura instead of two and I asked the new owner but she insisted that it was only one. But hey, I've been ordering that same dish for the past many, many years I've been here. She forgot both the fish cakes on the skewers and the shrimp tempura. Tell me if there's a big difference in my combination udon? One is a strip down version food court style with only one shrimp tempura and the other was from the previous owner. I really hope they'll learn from the previous owner who made great authentic Korean food.

I struggled on deciding to rate 3 or 4. Online states they close at 8 PM, but they locked the doors around 7:15 PM. I called when I was at the door and the woman allowed us to still place an order. On one hand the flavor was great, but there was little meat in the bibimbap and I wasn't a big fan of the soup. Ultimately the 4 is for the overall flavor and the customer service. I'll definitely try this place again.

Came in for dinner. Nice small place mom and pop. Like just a husband and wife. But they do good. It does take a little time but the food was worth it. I had the seafood soup. Good amount and tasted great. Also had the spring rolls which were very good. Friday or Saturday night you may want to call to reserve a table. Very nice place.

I went to Midori with a few friends for dinner last week. Midori offers pretty good food, but I'm not sure whether I would go out of my way to eat here again. Of their appetizers, I preferred the Korean sushi rolls the most; however, it wasn't amazing and next time I think I would forgo appetizers. I ordered the Dol-Sot Bibim Bap, which was good but I felt like it was light on meat and heavy on rice. The food and the service were both fine here. I may return to eat here again, but since it is not on my way, nor particularly close to home, I'm on the fence about returning. Recommendations: -Skip appetizers or select something that you know you like Verdict: Pretty good, although I wasn't "wow-ed".

We come here a lot. And I don't know why it didn't occur to me to review this place. Hubs says because Mindori is like coming home to mom's house to eat a meal. Mom's place does require a review everyone just knows that it's home and home is good mom cooked meal! We usually get the hot stone bibimbap and udon noodles. We've had the oh sam bulgogi, the various types of kimbap, dumplings and noodles. Try any of them!

Here's the short and the simple: What I do not like about this place- 1. It is too far from my home! I'd be here twice a week, if it was closer to me. 2. It's also tiny (inside and out) and is easy to miss when driving on Rt. 10/ Whitney. What I like about this place- 1. It's new and clean. They've been open for only a few weeks. 2. Most meals are served with free fresh salad and miso soup. 3. Nice refills on hot tea. 4. Nice and friendly staff. 5. Reasonable pricing. What I love about this place- 1. It has a Korean menu with a Japanese option. They have duk bokki (rice cake in red hot paste sauce), bibimbop(rice with lots of vegetable), and bulgogi/galbi (bbq beef). What's cool about this place- 1. There's a nice sized TV on the wall. When there's only Koreans in the restaurant, they turn on the Korean shows. 2. This is not a full fledged Korean restaurant. It's more like a fast food joint where you get served food quickly. This means you don't get all the free side dishes (ban chan) but the cost of the meal is lower on the whole. What to order- Udon: It was great, both times I came. The noodles stayed firm for a long time. Their udon was much better than Sono Bana's. Bibimbop: It was not the best bibimbop I've had but the only other places in New Haven you can buy bibimbop is Seoul and Oriental Pantry, so there's no complaints here. What not to order- California roll: It was just not too impressive. I'd rather go to Sono Bana for rolls. I will try their sushi next time and update my review. read more

Midori is a no frills, tasty Korean/Japanese restaurant. This place presents incredible value; great taste for a relatively low price. The sushi rolls are all expertly made and significantly cheaper than your typical Japanese restaurant. Even the Korean dishes are much cheaper than those of their counterparts. Pork bulgogi can easily run you $17 at many places, but at Midori, it's only $13. When you take into account the included miso soup and salad, you've got yourself a pretty good deal. As previous reviewers have noted, Midori does not offer the usual number of banchan (small dishes); they only offer two types of kimchi. But, I think this is a small sacrifice for the good price. If you're in the area, you might also want to try them for lunch; their sushi lunch specials are outrageously cheap (2 rolls of your choice, soup, and salad for $6.95). Highly recommended. read more

Overall, Midori is pretty good for Korean food especially around here. I haven't really found any good Korean restaurants in the New Haven area and this one was decent. Now for pros and cons. Pros: 1. Tasty authentic food. They don't have all of the things you expect from a Korean restaurant like some of my favorites such as jjajangmyeon. But they do have some like Bulgogi and Bibimbap. The food was pretty tasty and they served kimchi and some of the other side dishes you'd expect when you're at a Korean restaurant. Not the best Korean food EVER, but really good considering where it's located. 2. Good service. The server / owner was really nice and our food came out within a reasonable period of time. 3. Reasonable prices on the food. I'd say you could probably spend $8 on an entree and something like $5-$7 for an appetizer and get a reasonable quantity of food. Cons: 1. The place is kind of small so don't come with a party larger than 4. 2. It's a little out of the way from New Haven, which is unfortunate. :( Midori is tucked away in this little shopping center off of Whitney Ave in Hamden. You'll miss it if you're not careful. I'd say that the place is good, but not amazing. It's definitely worth it to stop in if you are hankering for some Korean food. :) read more

I was pretty disappointed with this place. I made it all the way from New Haven hoping to find my new favorite bibim bap place, but I didn't. In fact my bibim bap was very ordinary. No fried egg, instead there were strips of what looked like egg batter (kind of what BK has in its breakfast sandwiches) and instead of fresh meat it had ground beef. Wifey ordered a veggie noodle dish, which she didn't know it had ground beef as well. Good thing she isn't a vegetarian. The homemade dumplings were no better than the ones we get at Trader Joes. It's a shame cause I really wanted to like this place. Clean, nice and really friendly service. - I must admit I was a bit of a jerk rattling the ice in my empty glass, hoping our server would kind of notice I was running low on water. Although to my defense I told her I drank a lot if water hoping she could look out for me... and the place was empty, so we could have had a little better attention. But I should know better than that and I do, I was just having a crappy day/week. - So this is an OK neighborhood joint, but not worth going out of your way for. read more

Just like being in mom's kitchen! Very comparable to my mom's amazing korean dishes- yummy authentic dishes! Take it from a korean girl who knows what real korean food should taste like ;) I didn't think there were any good restaurants in the CT area but was pleasantly surprised. Decor/atmosphere: small, simple, cozy. I went on a Friday night and it was just my boyfriend and I and another family at the next table. Quick and friendly service. They have a variety of dishes on the menu, even some Japanese food. This is not a korean bbq place so look elsewhere if that's your main objective. Very reasonable prices. So if you want to avoid trekking to Flushing Queens for decent korean food, I would highly recommend going to Midori for a quiet and yummy dining experience :) read more

The menu serves up tasty and authentic food that gives Korean restaurants in NYC a run for their money! A good sign of a REAL Korean restaurant is having Korean people eat there! It also helps to be served by the wife/owner who is so sweet and cares about her customers. I believe it's her husband cooking up the awesome grub. That's so adorable! Here are some of the things we ordered and the ratings: Hand made dumplings - good Bibimbap - great BulGoGi - excellent! Jahp Chae - great Omelet Rice - excellent! I'm going to make it a habit of eating there often. Finding good authentic asian food around here is like finding a diamond in the rough since CT is the capital of fake asian greasy spoons. read more

My Queen & I decided to revisit this lovely establishment, and again, we were extremely pleased with the food. She decided to try the Dak-Galbi ( chicken, veggies & rice cakes in spicy sauce). The chicken was tender and perfect bite-sized morsels. But adding spice to this dish has raised the bar to another level, because I personally enjoy spicy meals, The rice cakes were tasty, overall, we must return due to the great food being served here!!! Admittedly, this place is a little pricey, but its worth it!!! read more

It's a small restaurant that serves both Korean and Japanese cuisine. Ordering the tonkatsu I was surprised how small it looked but the taste was delicious. I like the side dishes that came it, tasted fresher than other Korean restaurants I have gone to. The udon was good and the broth had a bit of spicy to it. It was very delicious, and the tempura was breaded and cooked well instead of that super breaded kind that you get at buffets. The crispy mandu was a must try. read more

Maybe it's because I'm white, maybe our waiter misheard (they do serve Japanese as well), but we ordered Mandu and definitely got Gyoza, or potstickers. Also, a Korean restaurant that doesn't serve Bon Chon before the meal is sacrilege. read more

What a pleasant little surprise of a Korean restaurant in Hamden. The restaurant is quaint and immediately has that small family run feel to it when you walk in the door. There are about 5-6 tables in the place. As for the food, everything that we ordered was excellent. I tried the Bibimbop in the stone pot which was fantastic. Great presentation, great taste and the food came out quick. My boyfriend tried the chirashi. He thought the portion was a little small but was quite pleased with how fresh the fish tasted. We also tried a Midori kimbop which was nicely done and a very generous portion for $5. The salads that came with the meal were very fresh as well. I'm so pleased with this little restaurant. It's clear that the owners take great pride in their restaurant. The prices are all very reasonable. Our chirashi, kimbop and bibimbop came to $36. We'll be back. read more

I'm not an expert on sushi...my partner is and he loves the flavors and freshness of Midori's sushi. I go for the Korean specialties, since I can't get enough of the strong and complex flavors. We've both had their stone pot Bibimbap numerous times - the ultimate comfort food, whether or not you add the various hot and mild sauces. Last week we discovered, and were knocked over by the Bibim Mandu...six or seven fried dumplings tossed with cabbage, other veggies, and bound in an addictive and sweet/hot sauce. Amazing. Add to the list of very good Korean dishes their version of Jap Chae, sweet potato noodles tossed with veggies and spiced beef. All in all a very nice experience, with friendly help in a convenient location. read more

Excellent Korean food! Very rare to find ANY Korean restaurants in CT, and I'm so glad that I found this place and it's only a few minutes away from me. It is small, lovely place, and the owners are so nice. It doesn't have the usual grill on the tables like other Korean restaurants, but the great food makes up for it! Would definitely go again! read more

A great find in an unassuming strip mall where the I-95 Exit 10 connector meets Whitney Avenue. We were ordering for a vegan and the tofu garlic soup with white rice on the side was perfect. Lovely garden salad with ginger dressing and veggie gyozu also got raves. Call 20 minutes ahead for takeout. read more

Best Korean food near New Haven. Small, but clean and cozy. The gimbap and spicy fried dumplings are great, even if you compare it to more established restaurants in NYC. Other menus are also decent, especially considering that there are almost no decent Korean restaurants in the area. Price is also decent. read more

This is my second time visiting Midori. With every visit, the food becomes better and better. I have visited several Korean restaurants in Connecticut, but this one is such a gem that I always return to it whenever I am in the area. I highly recommend the bulgogi and bibimbap. Also, if you are looking for appetizers, Midori's dukbokki and dumplings are to die for! read more

Midori is like two great restaurants in one where you can get authentic Korean food and quality sushi at the same time. I've had a number of things from Midori's menu - from small takeout lunches to large orders of noodles and dumplings for 20+ people - and I've never been disappointed. The bibimbop rice bowls, japchae stir-fried noodles, and various noodle soups are made from fresh ingredients and packed with flavor, and they make delicious meals on their own. I usually lean toward the Korean side of the menu, but I've had their sushi, too, and it's also really good. Prices are very reasonable, and there are lunch specials for both noodles and sushi. The owners (who are the only two people I've ever seen there on staff) are always very nice, and they've been more than accommodating when I've asked for extra things like a container of hot sauce to-go, or a giant plate of dumplings ready to go for a school event the next day. When I'm in the mood for something different for lunch or dinner, I'm glad to have Midori as an option in Hamden. read more

Yummm! I've been missing all the Korean restaurants in Oakland, so I'm very happy to have discovered Midori. Appetizers were excellent - seafood pancakes & hand-made dumplings were both delicious. I had the hot stone bibimbap which was as good as my favorite place in Oakland. My date had bulgogi which was a little on the wet side, not as crispy as he likes it, but still good. All in all, good food, great service & really really nice people! read more

I've seen this place for a few years but never really knew much about it. My boyfriend recently suggested that we try it and I'm so glad we did. I was pleasantly surprised by this Korean Japanese fusion restaurant. The place is tiny so I wouldn't recommend going with a big group. There's only three people that work there and they're all very nice. They have a sushi menu as well as noodles and Korean dishes. I've been back two times now and both times I had the chicken ramen because it was so delicious! My boyfriend had the beef bulgogi and the chicken ramen and loved them both. read more

Excellent food and service! Cant believe this place was so close too... Bibimbap totally satisfied my cravings, esp when I didnt want to drive all the way to NYC. The food is incredibly fresh and authentic, and they have a pretty extensive sushi menu as well. The place is kinda small, but pretty cozy, and the owners are extremely friendly and accomodating. I plan on taking friends here to introduce them to basic good Korean food... and they have takeout! Dont miss this gem of a place if you're in the area. =) read more

I really like this place. I don't think it's too small, it's actually rather cosy, but if you aren't looking closely enough for the sign when you drive by, you may miss it. Very casual peaceful atmosphere. We came for a late lunch on a Friday. We had the place all to ourselves. We ordered their Korean specialties: seafood pancakes for an appetizer, dolsot bibim bop, and thinly sliced beef Korean BBQ. It was all delicious! The family owned and operated place is great. The owners are very friendly if subdued. They were already subdued when we arrived, so that was great. It's kind of like having dinner at the grandparents place. But don't worry, it doesn't take long for your food to arrive. And when it does, it will occupy all of your senses. You think I'm writing superlatively until you experience it for yourself. Awesome little place I went to lunch at yesterday, the noodles are awesome and the staff is really nice. The inside is a kind of quaint and its tye kind of place you could easily drive past 100 times, but it's clean, quiet, and very nice for a quick lunch. The prices are pretty reasonable, about $9 for a big plate of chicken and noodles and a salad; they also have all sorts of sushi and soups that I didn't get to try, but I will definitely be going back. read more

I Love this place and try to order every other week or more. Small seating area, but all the food is so delicious! I love the kimbap rolls, bi-bim-bap, and bulgogi. The food is good but a bit pricey. The service from the owners is great. The service from the young man who works there is the worst of any restaurant I have ever been too. He acts as if he hates his job and that being a waiter is beneath himself. He waits long periods of time to take your order i.e. you might be sitting for 10 minutes before he even realizes you are in the restaurant (that doesn't mean he comes to your table, he just knows your there). This is after you have had to seat yourself. Even then your lucky if you get your drink by the time the meal is ready. There are no refills of your drink (not that there is an extra charge or anything he just doesn't come back to your table). Once my daughter needed a spoon and when asked he wouldn't bring it. Once I sat at the only table that didn't have dirty dishes on it (once again because he doesn't seat you). About 7 minutes later, he cleaned the other tables and asked me to move. I've been there several times and the list goes on and on. As you can read from some of the other reviews if you get the young male waiter your in for a rude experience. That being said the food is worth paying the high price for and if you get the mother to wait on you, your in for a treat. To be transparent, I've been told I'm not allowed back as I was only willing to give the waiter a tip around 10%. Also, I noticed that he has written a dishonest reply on someone else's review. But to respond to that post, I haven't made any statement about Korean restaurants. I love Korean food, I speak Korean, and lived in Seoul, South Korea for almost 10 years. I'm a teacher and a generally positive person. However, I was told that I was being racist because I would only give a 10% tip. I tried to explain that I was treated poorly and wasn't given any service beyond the delivery of one drink and my food. This is my first online review I've ever written. They don't have all these banchan(side dishes) that other Korean restaurants usually do, but they have decent food at reasonable price so it's okay with me(bulgogi can easily run you over $20 in other place) There are always many Korean people dining which i think it's good sign. On Korean side, they have all their basic Korean food line up, dol-sot bibimbap, bulgogi, dak-galbi and udon. Pretty much everything i have ordered are above average. In sushi wise, it is okay.
