Scammer.. please be aware and do not pay online for these fishing trips. We turned up at the docks yesterday morning, no show.. just lots of people waiting for their groupon tickets. Phone call to the number on the board ... no answer. Phone call back.. "sorry my mother is dying, trip cancelled, call Groupon and they will refund" Looking through the reviews, this has been going on for 6 months and the boat next door said the boat has NOT left all season. Just day after day, people turning up with their tickets. Disaster.. we have been scammed.. Groupon have refunded our vouchers.. this guy has pocketed our money.. we are still waiting for the rod cost refund.. so we are still out of pocket and went all he way to Sheepshead bay to be scammed like this. I bought a Groupon for two for a fishing trip. I booked online on their website for a trip that was held out to the public as being available. I wrote to ask a question about the date that I had already booked and I was told that they were not going out that day even though I had booked a trip for that date. I do not live in New York and that is the only day I can use the Groupon. I called the next morning and spoke to the Captain who said his mother was dying so there would be no trips for the next week and a half. My issue is not with the cancellation (I understand if someone has an illness/death in the family), but with how everything has been handled. The Captain told me to talk to his scheduler who would make it right and gave me her number. I called and got a text back "can't talk, text instead." I explained the situation and was told that she was at her job and would get back to me later. No response. And no response when I followed up. (UPDATE - I heard back from their scheduler Chasidy - she was patently rude and unhelpful. She suggested that I read the Groupon more closely, that perhaps I should sell my tickets and ignored my request to refund the extra $15 I paid for pole rental when they cancelled a trip that I booked through THEIR website. Seriously, whoever employs this person is engaging in an act of charity). Just amateur hour. Essentially, I would have showed up for my trip and nobody would have been there given that they never reached out to tell me it was cancelled and these people were given a chance to make it right. I had to fight with Groupon to get a credit to my account and the credit card company will reverse the extra charge for the pole rental once I challenge it, but this was an incredible hassle and this is no way to run a business. If I didn't fight it out with Groupon, this business would have taken my money and absconded with it. Meanwhile, Captain Dave who is one block away has a Groupon for the same price and was extremely accommodating when I called and I will be trying his business instead as I would recommend that others do too. I will post a review on his page when I am done with that trip. But in any event, AVOID CAPTAIN MIDNIGHT! The crazy thing is that two days after they told me their boat was not going out for 10 days, their website is still accepting reservations for those days. I guess they want to help themselves to more people's $$$. UPDATE - I have been contacted by multiple other people who experienced a similar issue with this company. One person told me that they redeemed a Groupon for use several weeks ago and the Captain cancelled it saying his mother was dying. I had a great trip with Captain Dave. Why does Groupon keep allowing this to happen? Even though Captain Midnight had supposedly cancelled the trip, I received a reminder email the day before the nonexistent trip and an email the day after the cancelled trip asking me to write a review. I can comply with that request. Absolutely. It's pretty apparent the guy does not have a dying mother - he even gave me the name of the hospice she was supposedly in - I looked it up online and there is nothing by that name. I took a chance on Captain Midnight, by myself, and was not disappointed. Captain Jeff tried so hard to get us to the fish, even braving what seemed liked four foot waves to get there. I got sick from the rocking boat but I still caught porgies and two black sea bass. My bass was 13 feet so I reluctantly threw it back. 15 ft was a keeper I was told by a fellow angler. The crew was amazing. Chris was friendly and helpful. Edwin was my man crush for the day. He was wonderful. He gave me some of his catch during the day when I hadn't caught any and then I was inspired to catch my own. Everyone went home with fish, some more than others. At the end, Captain Jeff gave me a coupon to come back and I will see them again, for sure. They are now family. Thanks guys. Two bathrooms on board. They flush on occasion. No water in the sink to wash hands. Please bring your own hand sanitizer. Bring your own snacks and water. 6 hour trip turned into 8 hours on this trip. I did not mind. Some did. So keep your schedules open. Capt Jeff only extended the trip to make sure his customers went home with fish. Make reservations before hand or pay cash on the boat. I paid about $60. Fun, fun, fun. On a side note, when we got back to the dock there were people waiting to ask the Capt for free fish. That speaks to the character of the man and his crew. Out of the sheepshead bay fleet this is probably the worst one. Smaller boat that packs on people with the groupon / living social vouchers. It's alright if you just want to get on the water and drink some beers, but don't expect to have first class service or a wonderful experience fishing. You may catch some fish but more than likely you'll catch the line of someone who's shoulder to shoulder with you. read more

This is a down and dirty fishing boat. The boat isn't as dirty as people are making it out to be, by the way. I had a great time even though I got a little seasick. Caught a few fish, even got a keeper. Tommy, the mate on the boat was seriously helpful and a lot of fun. There were a few seasoned fishermen on the boat who made it a blast, as well. Once I get my sea legs I'll definitely be coming back. If you want an honest to goodness fishing trip, use this boat. read more

The crew was helpful and friendly. Besides that, I, like other reviewers, do not understand the four and five star reviews. The boat was overcrowded so most of the time was spent untangling lines. We did not go deep sea fishing as advertised. We remained in the bay the entire time. In addition, a few people were smoking in various places. If they allowed smoking, which I doubt was legal, at least they should limit it to a specific area. The bathroom is disgusting. There is no water, so basically the toilet is just a nasty hole to go in. This has to be a health violation. I was very happy to get off. read more

Ive gone on this boat each year using the available Groupon, and have had great experiences each time. This year however, I did decide to go with a large group of friends on the weekend, and I can see why everyone may say it's overcrowded then. If you go on a weekday, there will only be a handful of people including yourself. Just so everybody knows, the Groupon does say 8:30-2:30, but it is actually until 3:30. Like someone mentioned earlier, the crew is very friendly in a rugged way. They will filet your fish that you are able to keep for you. We had a blast fishing, and for 3 of us, it was really the first time. We appreciated Brian's teaching us how to use the fishing rods and to lower and raise our lines. We also very much appreciated Dennis' help while we were fishing. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of five is that the bathroom that is available on the boat is disgusting and has no sink or even hand sanitizer. Went on this boat for the first time. Beware. There is a lot of hidden costs. There is a woman there that collects the fare who is only concerned with how much she can get. In addition to the fare, there is $7 for a rod and $3 for hooks. Go figure. Bait is free but you have to pay for equipment. Some of the people there went before. Don't know why they would want to come back. There was one guy there with his friends who apparently had one set price with the captain and this woman was arguing over $3. Plenty of boats in the area. While we were walking to the boat, people kept offering us lower fares. On plus side, captain was very involved. Still, first and last time. read more

I don't know what happened to this charter. Last year was terrific. This year, it was not organized, and they stole $10. We rented 2 poles for $10. With only a$20 in hand, we were told we would get a refund that didn't happen. The poles we got were broken, and we had to get our own bait. If I can give zero star I could. TERRIBLE service. We drove 2 hours to get here from NJ, got to the boat (Capt. Midnight) and was told the wind is too much (50mph) and they couldn't ship out, which is bullshit - we checked the wind was 18 mph and it was a beautiful day. They probably didn't want to ship due to not enough people, and didn't even have the BASIC courtesy to call us, who made reservations in advance!? Such a waste of money and time, very disappointed. We bought a livingsocial deal for a full day of fishing for two, and it expired last week. We never had the chance to use it. Why? We went the second to last weekend before it's expiration date and that boat was PACKED. While we were walking up to ask if they could fit two more people in, the people by the dock were very enthusiastic about getting us a space in the cramped boat, but... that was until my friend decided to inform them of a lil suttin suttin. He told the crew "we have a livingsocial deal for 2, do we show you now?" and one member of the crew immediately said "oh.. you have the deal... i don't think the captain will let me squeeze you two in then. Come next week instead." REALLY? I still PAID, but these people just wanted cold cash (more cash too) upfront. I even told him that was our ONLY day available, or else the coupon would expire on us - Nope, didn't give a flying f*ck. Now what, captain midnight? Use my deal for the face value and pay full price for my companion? When it was you guys who refused to let me on your boat because I had a deal. read more

Terrible boat. Terrible crew. I do not understand having these many crew members when they do absolutely nothing, but hang out inside and once in a while come out to ask - any luck? No! No luck! Because instead of going to Rockaways like I was told on the phone by the captain himself, the boat just set on the side of the Verrazano bridge for 3 hours with absolutely no fish. When I made a sarcastic remark about it, the crew members laughed among themselves saying: "I ain't going out there again! Waves are so big we be the only once not sick!" So if the conditions are bad why not be honest and cancel the trip. You guys new ahaid that no one will catch anything! To top it all off when my husbands line got caught on the bottom and afyer trying for five minutes to loosen it up we called a crew member to help his answer was :"well, loosen it up!", I said "we have been trying for five minutes, can you help!", crew guy"well I am not going to do anything different then he is doing!" Are you kidding me!! You are there to do all those things! That is what we pay for!... And like a few people have mentioned the boat is gross, dirty and no fresh running water. read more

This is probably the filthiest boat in Sheepshead Bay. Toilet won't flush because it has no water. If you go fishing, make sure you don't need the toilet because if you do, it'll be a terrible experience for you. These boats should be inspected. They make money but they don't want to clean their boats. And by the way, no fish too. Went for an evening trip for porgy and it was terrible. Fishing won't start until 1 hour after sailing. Yes, we caught fish..and the capt, crew was very friendly...which is why I gave this boat a 2...otherwise it would be a negative 5! It's never a good sign to get aboard a boat and see the hatch open and someone working on the engine. The boat is jacked up, filthy and nasty! They give you bait on busted up cut up old laundry soap containers, and give you your catch in a used Target bag! The toilets dont flush, no toilet paper, there is no soap or running water, they charge you for "hooks and sinkers" $3 (but you dont get to KEEP them) and I had to try 3 poles before I found a reel that worked. Problem was, the pole they gave me was missing 2 eyelets and the top one was taped on. The mates don't know what they're doing or how to filet your catch. The knife the mate was using to clean my catch was a dollar store serated edge knife that he was trying to SHARPEN on a stone. Really?? He hacked my fish to death, ripping it instead of cutting it. No Filet knife!?! This was a living social thing..and I will never go back unless I empty my bladder and bring my own pole and tackle. If you go, wear a gas mask or the fumes running off the engine will choke you, and take a look inside the door under the sink...you will find tons of USED toilet paper wadded up and stored there. The boat needs a deep cleaning, a good coat of paint inside and out, some new equipment, a plumber and a professional crew. But yes, we did catch fish! read more

Went fishing this weekend with living social deal on the Captain Midnight with friends. We were a large group and had a great time. We brought coolers of beer and sandwiches. For those that get sea sick definitely take some dramamine before, even I felt a little nauseous at first. Beware!! Had a groupon for a "full day trip" which stated the trip was from 7:30-3:30 but the ship didn't leave the dock until 8:30. Additionally, the boat is run down and extremely overcrowded. Lines got tangled every few minutes. Worst of all, one of the mates, Chris, was very rude and argumentative. He actually had an argument with a woman on the trip over tipping. Was my daughter's (23)first time fishing on a fishing boat. She had a nice time. It helped that we went in the middle of the week. (9-11-13) because there might have been no more than 50 people on board. Capt Jeff kept moving around to make sure people were catching fish. Kyle went out of his way to make me and my daughter feel comfortable and made sure we were having fun. The boat was well a fishing boat. The bathroom would be my only complaint being I had my daughter with me but she didn't complain. Had a voucher so for the price I 'twas a good experience. When i first went out with this captain i was amazed that everyone was catching fish but then when you are fishing go porgies that travel in schools that would be the norm. I fished with him a second time and noticed that when certain people came aboard and entered the pool he would not move the boat if that one or two people are catching multiple fish and the rest of the boat is hit and miss or nothing. They say 3 strikes and you at out. Well the captain of this fleet of boats including the Admiral Midnight struck out as I witnessed the conversation between one of the guys who was strangely helping a guy who said (he was not part of the crew but the captain allowed for him to collect the fare)to one of the regular fishing guys , "he is gonna put you on them all day" sure enough as my hand is white the captain did just that this guy was on the fish all day and once AGAIN THE OTHER PATRONS WHO WERE IN THE POOL CAUGHT 1-3 AND THE GUY WHO WAS ON THE FISH CAUGHT AND CAUGHT AND CAUGHT AND CAUGHT. so why didn't the captain move to another location if only one person was benefiting? Took my dad here for the first time in a decade. His first time on a boat and the experience was awful. Boat was overcrowded, there was even a man in a wheel chair and they carried him on because the boat wasn't wheel chair accessible. Lines kept getting tangle because everyone was soo close together and it was hard to catch a fish because they kept moving from place to place. I am baffled by the positive reviews. We went there today and it was a shambles. No staff, no service, boat overloaded with people, and toilet filled with ooze. My 3 friends and i went fishing with this boat for the 5th time. We caught fish as usual and the mates Chris & Joe were excellent! Chris is very knowledgeable and is a master fish cleaner. He works wonders with his knife like i have NEVER seen before and i have been on many party boats over the years! Chris also taught me how to catch blackfish and i am forever greatful. I actually caught 2 keeper size ones via his training. Joe is always there when u need him no matter what and would give the shirt off his back if you needed it. They are an excellent and true winning team together! Thank you guys! We made sure to tip them well as they truly deserved it! Captain Jeff is a truly great captain, as he always tries hard to get us fish. The only problem is that the Captain keeps the boat out too late!! We all have lives and schedules to keep and it would be Soooo much better if he came in regular time like the other boats! It's not fair to anyone when that is done. I mean c'mon we all have kids and or responsibilities! With that said, we will come out again next week because we love the crew but if we stay out late again we will take our business to another boat even if it costs more! read more

We booked a Groupon deal and this fishing trip was way better than the fishing trip (or better yet, non-fishing trip at the Angler Fleet). We got to the dock early. It was me, my 2 siblings, and 3 other guests. Based off of reviews, I thought the boat would be crowded but surprisingly wasn't, so it was nice to have all of the right side of the boat opened. We sailed for an hour before they dropped anchor. I don't get seasick but unfortunately most of the guests got sick. My siblings were ok until the boat stopped, as the boat rocked alot. Fortunately, I was fine and I manned all 3 of our rods. We rented 2 rods at $5 each and when my line got tangled, 1 of the guys helped me detangle it. After 2.5 hours out on the water, I got a good size black sea bass. I was very happy with that! Even though I was the only fishing in our party and only caught 1 fish, I still tipped the guys on the boat. They helped me detangle my line and took the fish off the line for me. I bet fishing on the Captain Midnight during the summer would be amazing! read more

The mates were very helpful, especially when it came to getting lines untangled. Caught a few fish :) The captain could lay off the horn though if your a believer in noise scaring the fish. I can't believe this operation is still in business. They have a tiny boat and PACK people on. There wasn't enough room to stand shoulder to shoulder. The crew was awful. They were cursing in front of kids the entire time and complaining about their jobs. None of the rods were ready and the guy putting them together kept complaining to us because we each wanted rods (4 of us). They lure people in with Livingsocial deals and then want you to pay cash when you get there or turn you away even if you made a reservation. The boat was also in horrible condition. booking was easy chasity was very helpful about parking and etc , boat was old it shows , they were in engine compartment first thing in morning ! Over booked this is sheer greed must of had 70 or more people putting poles where there was no pole holders ! people doing drugs { weed } in open nothing was done until several people complained ! bathroom was clean when boarding ship within an hour toilet was overflowing , no toilet paper at all the whole trip even female deckhand had to use paper towels ! no light in bathroom , no water supply at all in bathroom no sink no water to toilet pipe separated from toilet ! tall black deckhand had too much attiude when you asked for assistance , poles were very old and some were cracked ready to break ! they asked for money if you needed a new rig or pole after second mishap ! only real good thing was captain moved several times to put us on fish that he tried to do for us , that day not too much fish was caught but thats fishing ! i would never want to do a loaded boat like that again God forbid an emergency on board !!!! and of coarse the bathroom you cant expect to be out all day without using a bathroom even if it was to wash hands off ! it doesnt look like they wash the boat down as they should with fresh water at times ! read more
