The Ginger Morning Bun was a first and even though cinnamon is my go to, this bun was excellent. The mixed berry Danish pastry was one of the best I've ever had. This was not a soggy mess that had been sitting in the case for hours. This cheese filled berry danish had crunch and the cheese texture was perfection. This bakery was so memorable that we stopped again on our return from Waimea Canyon and had the macadamia pesto pizza for lunch. The macadamia nut cinnamon roll is to die for. Like someone else said, this bakery would make a killing in San Francisco just as it does in Kauai. Their chocolate chip cookies are also good, their croissants are above average, and their pizza is also pretty tasty (crust is something you want to eat). We came here on three different occasions while we were in Kauai. Baked goods are best eaten fresh. Having eaten at about 20 different places during our stay in Kauai, this place ranks as one of the top 3. Kauai is so lucky to have a proper bakery! Definitely worth a stop! I was thrilled to learn that my very rare Saturday morning treat at the farmer's market in Kilauea is from the one little cafe in Hanapepe I walked into one Friday Art Night last year. Tried and recommended: Macadamia Nut Cinnamon Roll, Almond Croissant, Kauai Spinach and Feta Roll. Note: The only ones I had so far, all recommended. Have not yet tried the bread but since the farmers market officials called the line a "bread" line, had to buy the bread. Bought Seeded Sourdough bread for Avocado Toast to be made later. When in Kilauea on a Saturday morning, go to the local Farmers market behind Kauai Mini Golf right off the highway. Stand in the "bread" line with others who are in the know. Market opens at 9am but be there at 830am and you will not be sorry. read more

Holy wow, I had no idea a "Nutella Cruffin" existed on this Earth. Imagine a muffin & croissant made love, produced the food version of a golden-doodle called a Cruffin, and filled it with a surprising amount of Nutella gooeyness. I'm glad I discovered this creation today on my way to Waimea Canyon and now I can't imagine having lived my life without it. I instantly started brainstorming how I could package a million of these delights to send to all of my Nutella-loving friends. Went on a Friday night during Hanapepe Art Night. Ordered a slice of pizza. The pizza was good. The service wasn't very friendly. I don't expect employees to make friendly conversation or be overly friendly but it's noticeable when employees can't even greet customers when they walk in, say "thank you" or even say "goodnight" when you leave. This is really unusual for a small business on Kauai where people are very friendly compared to the big cities. read more

Wow. This place is amazing. Great staff, wonderful food... we drove all the way from Poipu twice to visit. It seems as if the owner loves doing what she does, and it comes across with a fantastic menu, but more importantly, great execution. A taste of Paris in Kauai. These croissants are super moist and flakey, which is only achievable by some bad ass bakers. Everything is made from scratch. They have awesome sandwiches on chewy fresh bread too. We're visiting from San Francisco and we came here twice and would have come more if we weren't moving to another part of the island. Hats off to the team running this place. Baking this good is super hard work and they're making culinary dreams come true. Finally, if you're looking for some good coffee look no further. They have one of the slow drip cold brew rigs that looks like something out of a chemistry lab. The cold brew I had delivered sweet chocolate notes. Run, don't walk to this amazing bakery. Now! Seriously - what are you waiting for? GO! After seeing all the Yelp love my husband and I decided to try it out. Basically, along with everyone else who's been fortunate enough to come here, we fell madly in love with it. First off, it's in Hanapepe - a cute little area with whimsical shopping and a rather famous swinging bridge (that served us no other purpose other than a great photo op). So it's not as if you'd be going just for the bakery (tho even if you were it would be worth it). We came specifically for the pizza and got there about 20 minutes before it was done (it's only served on certain days and at certain times so be sure to call and check if you're planning on having that). The cool kid at the register assured us that it was worth the wait and allowed us to pay for it and come back in 20 minutes when it was ready. My husband went old school and got 2 slices of pepperoni. He loved it. Like went back and got a 3rd slice loved it (fatty, fatty 2x4...). I opted for the pesto pizza. Disclaimer: I'm not one of those people who LOVE pizza. I can't eat it anytime or anyplace. I have to be craving it. Like really in the mood for it. So a lot of the time when I have it, I'm slightly disappointed thinking, 'Aaaaaand this is why I'm not a pizza person.' But then along came Midnight Bear Bakery and the pesto pizza. Hello, lover! Delicious. Super substantial slices (I could only eat one and was stuffed) and this amazing pesto sauce that I'm quite certain is made fresh at the bakery (no jars or cans here, people!). It was ooey and gooey and the crust was perfect - not too thin, not too bready. I think we died and went straight to pizza heaven. But wait! There's more! We were at a bakery so we couldn't very well leave without getting something sweet, could we? Sacrilege for sure! I love all things lemon so a lemon tart fit the bill. It was pricey - $7.00 - but well worth it. The crust was buttery and flaky, the lemon custard was the perfect amount of sweet and sour. We shared it and it hit the spot right on the head. The bakery atmosphere is great - clean and simple. No gaudiness or obnoxious signs and colors here. It makes stuffing your face with the some of the best pizza ever quite relaxing, actually. There are only about 6 or 7 small tables to sit at but it wasn't busy when we came in. The guy behind the counter was very cool - he had only been there a couple months but was very knowledgeable about the menu and was fun to chat with him. An authentic french bakery is a rare find in the middle of Hawaii (not that you need french pastries, but hey I'm always looking for a good croissant). Hanapepe is a very small town that is trying to make a come back. This bakery definitely adds something quaint to the local area. I had a good cold brew here to cool myself down and I split an almond croissant with my mother. The croissant was surprisingly wonderful and flaky. They do have a restroom here for customers which is wonderful, because not many places in the area have restrooms with sinks and soap. This bakery is famous for their macadamia nut cinnamon rolls which we took home for breakfast the next day. They were also phenomenal. My wife and I go to Kauai as often as possible and always try to attend the Hanapepe Friday Night Street Fair. There are many vendors set up along the street and in front of their shops. We love banana bread and buy it wherever and whenever we can find it to try out and see which is best. We found a stand just outside the Midnight Bear Breads shop. We bought one loaf and after trying it, we wish we had bought half a dozen! It was excellent! It was moist and flavorful. On each trip to Kauai, we probably buy banana bread from at least 3-4 different locations. It can be in a restaurant, street fair or bakery. If we see it, we're buying it. We were disappointed when we returned to Hanapepe and did not find any banana bread sold inside the Midnight Bear Bakery and Breads shop. Perhaps it was only made for the night of the street fair or we were too late. The next time we are in Kauai, we will definitely go to the Hanapepe Friday Night Street Fair and buy as many of banana breads from the Midnight Bear Breads shop as we can fit into our suitcases! The bread they make here is excellent. Quality ingredients really bring out the natural flavor of the flour. Baked just right. Loaves were a very dark brown, nearly black - just the way I was taught to do it. Great crust and texture. Try it naked first before you dip it in olive oil or add butter to really experience the quality. I tried the bread pudding square. Ok. Should have been heated a little to maybe bring out the flavors. Otherwise, I would suggest you skip them.
