I've been so very impressed with this school--the teachers REALLY seem to care about the kids both educationally and personally, They contact me proactively if my daughter slips behind in her schoolwork and seem focused on helping to achieve results rather than on discipline. In her 4 months at the school she's made only a few friends, but the friends I've met seem to be very nice, polite, and appropriate. Oak Valley has a great odd/even schedule system in which the students have four classes each day, for nearly two hours each, rather than cramming 7-8 classes into a day. Each class is every-other school day, so homework is never due the day immediately after it's assigned. And the amount of homework seems to be less because the kids have so much time in class to get things done. If I had to complain about any aspect of the school experience it would be that the Poway Unified School District has a mash-up of online tools available and it's not always easy to know where to find information about assignments and grades. That being said, I strongly prefer having online access to not having online access.

I literally take my child to school every morning at 7:15-7:18AM routinely through the drive through drop off patiently waiting for the gates to open for the solar panel parking. The Principle Regina Serbin rushes out to my truck YELLING "You can't be waiting in this line UNTIL 7:30AM when the gates open because you're blocking my staff from the parking lot" First of all HOW am I blocking the staff when the staffs cars I am blocking have already parked? This would not be a problem if they opened up the solar panel parking earlier for SAFER drop offs into the school. I didn't make a fuss so i said okay sure, what time can I start lining up? She says, "7:30AM when the gates open." Does she want everyone to START getting in line @ 730?! Like school starts 745AM people are gonna be late going to school, and driving through to WORK and cause traffic on the main street road - IT GETS DANGEROUS. i've asked all the traffic stop ladies in the morning when this gate opens up and where I can wait for drop offs, and everyone gives me A DIFFERENT ANSWER. The SECOND she tells me off that I cant park and wait in line to drop my child off, I drive ALL THE WAY AROUND and park on the STREET and then I see MORE people start waiting in the drop off line at 7:20AM, she does NOT say a WORD to them nor make them drive around UNTIL 7:30AM. If this is a problem SHE needs to be outside all morning regulating the traffic. - WHAT IS THE POINT OF HAVING 2 LANES (1 for buses and 1 for driving into the solar panel parking to drop your kids off. IF YOU CANT WAIT IN LINE UNTIL 7:30 ON THE DOT?? Every morning parents use the bus lane to drop their kids off QUICKLY, to avoid the CRAZY exit traffic from this school, they do not stop parents who park on the red curbs for drop offs (ALL OF THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE disfunctional management) OH be careful driving through the solar panel parking lot, your cars suspension will literally EAT every single hole & bump and cause you problems, don't know why this is taking so long to fix, and getting OUT from the solar panel parking is a NIGHTMARE. NO ONE to regulate the flow of traffic, you have parents fighting over getting out and going through the entire dirt field to EXIT the gates. PLEASE DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS FOR OTHER PARENTS. Fortunately this will be my child's last year here at Walker Elementary School.

Of course even more biased because I have been on the PTA here for the last 10 years. Gotta put a plug in for the PTA....but they work hard to make sure our staff and kids get 100% support! Mr. T set high standards for this school and with our new principal Mr. Lee he has even set the bar higher. They have both done an extremely awesome job with the school. We have a lot of activities that we do for the kids from our money making Fall Festival, Spring Jog-a-thon, Family Movie Nights, Family Dance, etc. Casa Mira View across the street is a tremendous assistant financially to our school. Perfect place to live so the kids can walk right across the street. Our PTA supports an awesome art program through Art Corps. This allows the kids to learn 8 fantastic art lessons which we then present at the end of the year at our Art Show. With the support of our PE program headed by Mr. Kaneko the PE also helps fund our Swim Program. Grades 3-5 take part in a twice a week swim program for 6-8 weeks in the Spring. Our 5th graders get a one week full of fun before their promotion in June that 2 of my 3 have the pleasure of enjoying. The parking lot gets full sometimes, but that's to be expected. The only other thing I'd add is that it's been very windy there. If feels as if their field is on a sort of plateau, and it gets windswept a lot.

Teachers often tell me that as long as I am in school and in class, my grades and work don't matter. I was punished with having multiple grades lowered despite doing work because I was in the hospital. Drug use and bullying is extremely common here, little is done to stop it. Kids are reckless on bikes and motorbikes. Suspension and detention policies are too loose. My entire time here, 6th to 8th, was very depressing and filled with bullying. Students can be forced to go no contact with others rather than have civil conversations. I wish I never attended.

I was attending with my daughter and her two 8 year olds, having a delightful time, when I happened upon this individual very aggressively, very loudly and very hostilely chastising 5 kids who looked to be 6-7. The tongue-lashing, complete with her jabbing her finger in a child's face while hurling accusations at him,then relentlessly berating the others, was EXTREMELY distressing. I was just a passer-by. I had no skin in this game, though I do know the difference between normal discourse and verbal abuse....It was a very upsetting demonstration of bullying, the very behavior we try to teach kids not to do...........But like a train-wreck, we couldn't take our eyes off the scene, horrified. The kids stood there frozen, seemingly paralyzed with fear, and just taking it (but what could they do?). They were young, stuck and looked terrified. She had an aide with her, so it was shocking to me that between the 2 of them this kind of mistreatment of 5 young kids was they best they could do to control their group. Finally my daughter intervened when it looked like the berating not only showed ZERO signs of abating, but instead was actually ramping up, apparently relishing the tirade she was delivering. This director/owner of the school seemed on a roll she could not or would not stop. I do not write this to attack, but to enlighten parents what might be happening with their kids at this school, with the recommendation that they question their kids about how they are treated and how she makes them feel. Personally, my heart broke for these poor youngsters. NO ONE deserves to be spoken to like that, especially such young, defenseless little children on an outing that was supposed to be fun. I was traumatized just watching. Had my daughter not intervened I suspect she'd STILL be ranting. .

My children attended RVA summer camp and they did not want to leave.
