So I have been holding back from writing a review about this place as I don't want other people to…read moreknow. But after coming here for such a while, I decided to do it. I do not come here for school - nor for kids - but for badminton and a great time with friends and what I would like to call my badminton family. Hah, I totally broke out in a smile while writing that. Every Friday and Saturday they have the gym open for badminton excluding some holidays. They have a schedule out front. Badminton is what a lot of people will consider very Asian BUT for your information it actually was played in European countries as well. Used to be known as Battledore and Shuttlecock and was simply two people hitting a shuttlecock backwards and forwards with a simple bat as many times as they could without allowing it to hit the ground. It was a upper class pastime in England and many European countries (Here's a site if you were interested in the brief history - http://www.bwfbadminton.org/page.aspx?id=14887). So just shedding some light on the history. Parking is pretty ample. Courts open up eventually and people play in twos against each other. Would say there are about 6 courts. If you are a beginner like me, you would want to stick around for when the court becomes free to hit the birdie around a bit. Practice makes perfect! And yes, you might want to bring a racket and mark your birdies. The courts are not as big as the badminton courts at Balboa but they are my favorite place to go on Friday and Saturday nights. If you do end up dropping by, do be respectful and make sure not to step onto the courts when a game is ongoing.

I am in math L/1A1 which is for students who struggle with the subject. I have a disorder that makes the numbers on the pages fly around and equations don't make any sense to me. Math is incredibly hard for me to even begin working on. I also have an IEP. My teacher has provided me none of the accommodations I legally am required to have, so I failed my first trimester of math and am currently failing my second. In middle school, I was given all my accommodations in math and ended the year with a B, which is incredible for me. Both my parents have called the teacher herself, and the school, multiple times. No response or a "we'll get back to you blabab", and nothing ever happens. I have expressed my feelings to my counselor and case manager, nothing is being done. I do not enjoy being a student here. You are promised many things-accommodations, available resources, trustworthy teachers ect. I dont have much to say about the students, they are as you would expect teenagers to be. But I hear white students say the N word, I've heard a group of boys openly mock an Indian girl (copying her accent and twisting up their faces), ect. I have never seen a teacher call out a student before. I had a boy call me a pussy for speaking quietly, the teacher heard, said nothing. No accountability in this school. There's also a huge issue with vaping, but nothing is done. Maybe that is just every school though. If you are a straight A student who doesn't have any mental issues, you will probably thrive here. (Forgot to mention, but there is an autistic boy in my math class who is frequently mocked by the other students and the teacher bullies him on a regular basis. She treats him like he is a idiotic liability, and also refuses to give him the help he needs). If you have more than two questions a day in class, prepare to be cut off or yelled at. :)

We have been going here since 2009 and we loved every moment of it. The classes are not overcrowded and the curriculum will get them ready for AP classes in high school. The school is a bit old and has been around for several decades but it brings much character. The sports programs available are great for both boys and girls like soccer, volleyball, basketball, flag football and track. The school has great festival each year during the holiday season and during the fall. The Fall festival is a one of a kind cozy festival full of performances, beer gardens, food from all nations and games for the kids to play. Overall this school has been fantastic with our two kids. We wouldn't change a single thing. We love St. Mikes.

I was punished with having multiple grades lowered despite doing work because I was in the hospital. Drug use and bullying is extremely common here, little is done to stop it. Kids are reckless on bikes and motorbikes. Suspension and detention policies are too loose. My entire time here, 6th to 8th, was very depressing and filled with bullying. Students can be forced to go no contact with others rather than have civil conversations. I wish I never attended.

He is now excited to go to school, loves his teachers, made some new friends and is learning in a much more encouraging and understanding environment. The staff is amazing. From the teachers to the administrators, they all go above and beyond. My child's confidence has improved significantly since starting nearly 2 years ago. He is polite, calmer and overall a happier kid. The techniques they use to teach are working. After seeing the full cycle from K-5 I can confidently say this school is terrific. My biggest fear was that because I don't speak Spanish that I would struggle to help my children but the interesting part is that my kids picked up Spanish quickly enough that they were able to translate the homework for me so I could help them with Math, Social Studies, etc. And with web tools like Google translate I can check their vocabulary pretty easily. If having a 2nd language is important to you (or just having a rock solid elementary school) then I highly recommend this school. I had to transfer my kids to this school since we live outside their boundaries and it has been worth the extra miles back and forth. I have also been there through 2 different principals / leadership teams and although they are different from each other in many ways their commitment to the children and the program is remarkable and felt through every part of the school. No, it is not a magical place with rainbows and unicorns all the time, it is a real school with real students and real teachers and the challenges that go along with elementary school but the focus is always on teaching and preparing children. They give me complete comfort that my children are cared for and their management of the children after school and during summer break is wonderful. There is an application, and parents truck their kids in from all over to get their children involved in the school. It is amazing. There is a traditional track that struggles now and then with test scores, but the immersion program is like a little private school tucked inside a public school. The kids are accepted in Kindergarten, and stay with the same group of students all the way through 5th grade. The best part is these students are fluent in Spanish, and can move on with a special skill.
