Hidden gem for some of the authentic fresh biryani's. Given the fact, they sell halal meat, you can get meat based food that is made with fresh meat/chicken. Over the years, the expanded and grocery prices are competitive. Mutton Biryani: Pakistani style. Very flavorful. Comes with raitha. I typically ask for coriander leaves, onions and lemon slices on top of my biryani. Depends on your taste bud, you can top with anything from the salad bar. Chicken 65: One of the fresh, juiciest in St. Louis. Chicken samosa: I like it with their spicy sauce. The sauce is Pakistani style. Tips: Friday biryani deals are 9.99 for both goat and chicken. I came to this place by a coincidence. This place has a small to go or self service dine in to eat on top of the grocery store. I got the gyro and chicken biryani to go and it was decent size for the price. I also got a few small samosa and their other desserts of which are tasty. Overall the grocery side has decent selections. I got a box of their mangoes. Those mangoes are great tasting, sweet and juicy. I got their pink guavas and also their mango lassi drink. This is my go-to Desi store. I love that there's a butcher who can give me some curry cut or Desi barbeque cut chicken. They say they are halal certified for whom that matters. They have a cafeteria and snack section. Fridays special is 9.99 biryani, which as far as biryanis go is pretty average biryani but great value for money in terms of portion. Having said that, I don't much care for the goat biryani - maybe it's the cuts of meat or the cooking time but the end product goat can be tough and chewy at times. The prices are reasonable for produce , 99 cents for curry leaves which I buy fresh and store in my freezer, and frozen stuff like tindora or okra. The snacks like banana chips are a bit on the expensive side, 3.49 for a small bag of banana chips. They have a broad variety of brand name masalas and spices - ground, whole and blends. A great international market in West County! My in-laws live in Ballwin, and I got the chance to visit this place this year. It definitely felt like home. Being and Armenian person living in LA, I'm very used to having tons of international grocery stores all over the city. This is one of the few in the area, and I really appreciate it's existence, haha. They have so many cool products that we enjoy here in LA on a regular basis. One recommendation would be the Piknik feta cheese and Sadaf teas. Also, they have a huge variety of rice. Try the rosewater and orange blossom water to make unique, Middle Eastern inspired desserts. If I lived in the area, I'd absolutely frequent it again for all my international recipes needs ;) read more

Basing this just on the cafe in the back...The vegetable samosas are delicious, and cheap. Had that typical light spiciness to add a little interest. Load up as many as you want from the self-help tray. The wife's falafel gyro was similarly quite good. Falafel are fried up while you wait, so they were hot and fresh. My goat haleem was decent. A bit bland for my tastes, but squeezing the included lemons into it punched it up a bit. I was introduced to MidEast Market by one of my friend. After my move to St. Louis, I was struggling to find grocery stores that gear towards South Asian and Middle Eastern palettes (For reference - I am Bengali). I brought my mom here and she was surprised to see the variety of produce, snacks, spices and other items they have to offer. It felt like a piece of home in the midst of St. Louis which is so rare to come by. I never had issue with customer service. They can be slow sometimes due to reduced staff but I say - be patient and take your time to shop here and see what they have to offer. If you are in a rush and wanna complain, go to Walmart. They have halal meats with reasonable prices which they cut to order. They also offer South Asian snacks and food which are very delicious and very reasonably priced. The food they offer are not Americanized. They offer Authentic South Asian food so if you are expecting mild curries and biriyanis, try somewhere else. Not only is their food great (gyros are lit ) they have a huge variety of things to shop from I am so pleased with some native Stlouians recommendations to get the chkn biryani from this market (I am always 1000% skeptical of recommendations from native MO ppl) but this was really good food. Overpriced grocery items, a lot of expired items on the shelves, unfriendly staff, and extremely-extremely spicy Biryani. I have stopped coming to this store because every time I go in, the male staff are rude and the service extremely slow. This is absolutely intolerable especially because I can get pretty much anything I want at Pan Asia, and with much better price and service. So, recently, I decided to give their cafe a try. I've had biryani several times, but this was the first time I ordered it from this place. The meat was scare (but I expected that)- however the flavor was awful. I can tolerate spicy, but this one was so spicy, I was chugging milk for 20 mins after I stopped eating. I was only able to take 5 bites. There is nothing at this market for me. If you've had a bad experience due to their poor service, bad attitude, or bought something by accident that was expired over a year- I recommend you write a review here because they won't change until enough people complain on an online forum. read more

I was craving a Gyro and this place came up on yelp. When I entered the store I looked around for where to order food. the guy at the register was busy yakking on the phone. We made eye contact but that was about it. Found the place in the back. The guys were cleaning up but stopped to take my order. The cook who took my order was very friendly but... once I got the base Gyro (beef) he asked me what I wanted on it. I asked for lite Tzatziki Sauce - got a glob. Asked for lite onions - got a handful. Asked for lite cilantro and he covered the whole thing. He told me to pay at the front. i took the order up, the guy was still on the phone. He waited on a few customers before me. Asked me what I got, told him, he said the price ($6.50). I handed him a $10, he gave me change an no receipt. I never saw a receipt handed to any customer. Interesting. About the only thing I can say about this place is "I have been there." read more

My craving for a samosa led me to this market on a Sunday morning. They are a grocer, restaurant (take out), and butcher. The place is packed with delicious new choices to spice up your cooking at home. Everyone who worked there was very kind. My samosa craving was fulfilled- they were delicious. I also ended up grabbing a bunch of their unique produce, spices, and sauces. I was most impressed by a HUGE package of fresh dill for about $1.50 in the middle of January. Located in Boardwalk Plaza in Manchester (there is a Goodwill and a USPS branch there), you might assume it is just another small market - but unless you go inside and walk ALL around you would never know they serve great food for take out. The hot food (and there is a cold case) is in the back to the right and you won't see it until you are actually where it is, nothing lets you know it is back there. I go here for the gyros and I've eaten them at many places but I am pretty sure this place is my new favorite. I like a gyro that I can hold in my hands (my issue with another previously reviewed place is that I couldn't do that, sometimes less is more ....) your choice of toppings and great helpful service make getting food here a good experience. We were super excited to try the cafe. It was absolutely filthy. People were doing self serve with no sanitation measures in place. We watched a child take a chicken roll, take a bite out of it, tell his mother he didn't like it, and watched her put it back on the heater. Okay, I'm going to have to start seriously stalking Stewart P. Just kidding, Stewart. Kinda. But seriously, Stewart P. knows all these hole-in-the-wall places that are simply excellent. I found myself in West County this week to take care of some business. And because I didn't want to resort to chain restaurants, I started to do some digging and came upon Stewart's review. And since it was literally right around the corner from where I was at, it was a given no-brainer. Words do not describe this place. They say they are a Pakistani, Indian, and Bangladeshi grocery store, but I think they should throw in Middle East as well. They also carry Halal meat. As stated before, it's in the same strip mall as Goodwill and USPS. The strip mall is a backwards L and Mid East Market faces west, so if you are westbound on Manchester, look for the Goodwill because you will otherwise miss it. It's basically in the corner of the backwards L. You go inside, and it's basically the Indian subcontinent right before your eyes. I'm serious. The fruit and vegetable section isn't too impressive, but they do have some of the basic vegetables used in Pakistani/Indian cooking. They have drinks, teas, frozen stuffs, Indian snacks, spices, flours and other grains, and any kind and brand of mix your little heart desires to put together the perfect Indian subcontinent dish. They even have ice cream brands from India. Not kidding. In the back left, they have a butcher stand, and the prices for chicken, beef, goat, and lamb are very reasonable and comparable to other ethnic markets (and actually probably better than your chain grocery stores). I'm sure the butchers had a field day watching me wander up and down the mix aisle grabbing masalas and curries and then sniffing the spice bags. I'm glad they didn't see me start almost tearing up grabbing the puri and the Bombay mix and the Gujarati mixes in the snack aisle, the very familiar bags courtesy of one of my best college friends whose mother would send extra just for me. (No, they don't have them at Global Foods, I've looked.) The real awesomeness though is in the back right, the food stand. I ended up overordering...hey, when am I ever in West County? Falafel, beef or chicken gyros for $5.99 with your choice of toppings. My beef gyro with the generous slices of meat came with a slightly muted tzatziki sauce. It might not have been as huge as a doner kebab, but it sure was delicious and nongreasy. They actually may be my favorite gyro place now in the St. Louis area. Chicken samosas are 79 cents and the veggie samosas are $1.00. The veggie samosas were amazing...probably could have had a bit more peas in there to go with the potatoes, but the incredible spicy kick gave off that homemade rush. And I got the chicken tikka with rice to go ($4.99), which smelled so good, I nearly had to inhale that too instead of saving it for dinner. The chicken was a little...crumbly, but the flavors were there. You can order chaats, goat biryani, beef nihari, goat haleem, and even jelebi. Best yet, they even do catering! It says dine-in on the carry out menu, but I think it's all carry-out...I don't remember seeing any tables to sit and eat. And do ask for utensils, they didn't give me any with my chicken tikka. The uncle at the cash register totally smothered a smile when I tottered up there with all my food. They do take credit cards. Hours are Monday thru Saturday 10 AM-8 PM, Sunday 10 AM-7 PM. This is the best place in town for a gyro--and it's less than $6 bucks. I almost hate even writing this review because I want to keep the place to myself. I know most white people don't have a need for Mid-East/Indian spices, so they would never go in there. (If my wife wasn't Indian, I wouldn't have know about it either.) Here's what you do...go west past 141 and Manchester (if you dare--and not during rush hou.r) Turn right into the Goodwill/Post Office parking lot. It's in the corner of the strip mall. Go in and walk directly to the back right hand side of the store. Look for the 3 Mexican guys cooking in the back and place order with them. (They've all worked there for years, which I think is awesome.) Then pay the Middle Eastern guy in the front. read more

Best place in STL for fresh lamb. They literally butcher it's off the carcass in front of you. Don't forget to tip the awesome butchers. Then grab a moth watering gyro from the other counter. I always bring some chaat (chickpea salad) and some samosas home for later. read more

The beef gyro was quite tasty. Vegetarian spring rolls were crispy, but the two types of chile sauces I got as sides were soooo flavorful, I can't speak to the actual flavor of the spring rolls. The texture of the roll combined with the spicyness and flavor of the sauces was really good. I put the sauces in my fridge. Gonna try them out with other dishes. Everybody was friendly. I tipped the guy who assembled my food. He was grateful. So, yeah. Tip them if you like them! I'll definitely be back.
