I can't remember a time when I actually looked forward to going to the dentist. Going to this practice comes about as close to that as I've ever been. They're professional, caring, gentle, and everything else you could hope for from a dentist. The atmosphere is almost relaxing. Hard to believe, but it's true. They will also work with you on your bill, and not try to maximize what you pay for a procedure. It's no wonder that this practice has a waiting list of people who want to use it. read more

Far far Far far away in Middletown, just past Frederick, has a seasoned highly-skilled dental specialist who's popularly known as Dr. Dan. I'm so thankful that my dentist Dr. Tomenko works with Dr. Dan McEowen. Words honestly cannot express how much I appreciate the professional and thoughtful guidance Dr. Dan provided Dr. Tomenko throughout my dental journey. Early on Dr. T saw that I needed various procedures performed. I value that she took the time to seek counsel in order to create the most ideal plan for me. Speaks volumes. And that's when Dr. Dan entered into my dental world. When I first met Dr. Dan I instantly felt calm and relieved. Stellar bedside manner. Positive vibes all the way. It's so important to feel comfortable in any medical setting because bottom line the patient is scared. They may show with anxiety, silence, a grin, etc. but most are scared and nervous because outcomes vary according to each individual. So yeah, he put me at ease. Whenever I had any questions or concerns he answered directly with a pleasing personable style. I'm all about being direct. Yes. He's also patient because good golly I asked a lot of questions. So much. In addition, his level of experience is beyond plus he's an innovative dentist. Kudos to always learning and moving forward! I'm a fan. The staff are friendly and professional too! They genuinely seem to enjoy working together as a team. No fakery here. During my share of visits I've felt welcomed from the moment I stepped into the office. So if you're searching for a new dentist and you live nearby (you're so lucky), I'd think you already know about Dr. Dan but here's an informative reminder :) For those like myself who're not from the area but needs to have complex or extensive dental procedures performed, I strongly suggest you consider scheduling an appointment to meet with Dr. Dan. Yes the drive is long but you're worth this opportunity so go. Best investment ever. The dental office is located in Town Center Plaza Shopping Center. I've gone to this dentist multiple times and I've never left without pain to return. I have discolored fillings that they are attempting to fix, they hollowed out a molar next to the one they did a filling on and I now have pain in both the tooth they filled and hollowed out. I had my first visit to Middletown Valley Dentistry a couple of days ago and was impressed by how kind and professional they were. Missy was the technician who took x-rays and cleaned my teeth and I hope I get her again (though I hear they're all good). She was gentle, considerate, and thorough, and very pleasant to talk with (you know, when her fingers weren't doing their job in my mouth). It's been a while since I've been to a dentist so I can't comment on a price comparison but I didn't feel pressured into having any unnecessary procedures. No up-selling, just good service and kindness. I'm sticking with this practice. read more

Despite everyone else's positive review of this office, I had a much less than pleasant experience over a couple months with these doctors. I was having severe pain - pain to the point that it felt like my face was burning and it was blinding. It would wake me up in the middle of the night, I would have to stop whatever I was doing while at work, and tears would just come without intention. The most excruciating pain I have experienced, lasting in episodes up to 5 hours multiple times a day. I knew the pain was not the same tension and pain I had experienced before due to TMJ; this was a horse of a different color. When I called to make an appointment the receptionist decided to diagnose it as TMJ over the phone (definitely qualified). Dr. McEowen and Dr. Chai over several visits were sure it was TMJ. I then went to several primary care physicians and neurologists trying over $300 dollars worth of prescriptions alone to make this bearable, because the doctors at this office were confident it was not a tooth. I understand my tooth did not show any signs of infection or issues, but I should not have been blown off time and time again while saying I was in extreme pain and could not live a normal life. The primary care doctors and the neurologists were not so cocky - they tried their best to diagnose, but kept coming back to an abscess. They were honest in saying I did not fit the bill for any concrete diagnosis and I should head back to the dentist. All these dentists needed to do was say they didn't know, because they honestly could not say 100% it was not a tooth and that it was 100% TMJ. It was not a black and white situation, but they made it black and white. Because of their gaslighting and minimizing of my pain, I spent another $300 on a mouth guard for TMJ that will never be put to use. A month/a month and a half into this ordeal my face blew up like a balloon (the point where it was now clear it was an abscess from a dying tooth this whole time). The hygienists were so kind as to laugh at my appearance, and in turn my pain, making jokes at my expense. Exactly what you want when you are suffering, right? I had an emergency root canal performed. The next day pain had gotten immensely worse and the infection was severe. I went in, got injections all through my infected face and the inside of my cheek slit. I was told to "squeeze" out the infection with a hot compress and up my antibiotics. Because of the severity I should have been told to go to the hospital to get IV antibiotics before this got worse than it already was. Dr. Chai was the cherry on top when he ignored an emergency phone call the first time. The second time, when the infection had taken over, said I would be fine. Subsequently, I ended up in the ER for two days, because it got worse than it already was. All in all I was not taken seriously throughout this process. I feel the severity of it was completely minimized. I lost a month of my life to this pain - it is hard to describe what I went through, but anyone around me trying to help suffered too. Despite Dr. McEowen's and Dr. Chai's experience in the field, they were wrong and caused me a lot of pain and could not admit that they didn't fully know what was going on. Following the root canal, hospital stay, and crown not a single apology, not a single ounce of empathy, not a single care that I had just gone through hell. Needless to say this is a rare situation, but because they handled it so poorly I will never return to this office and will never recommend them to anyone. Your job is to investigate and find solutions, sometimes out-of-the-box solutions, in order to help your patients, not jump to the easiest conclusion and shoo them away. A patient coming back time and time again saying they are in this much pain, not sleeping, and not able to function...you should probably not give them the same answer every time - maybe recognize something is off. I still have nerve pain a year later. Saying that you don't know does not make you a bad doctor. Making patients feel the way I did makes you a bad doctor. read more

By far, the best dentist practice I've ever visited. Dr. Chai was skilled and kind and explained the procedure fully. He was so confident and caring. Kerri, the assistant, was amazing. And if all of this was not enough, they learned that my mother had died just days before and I was obviously heartbroken. Kara, at the front desk, took it upon herself to buy me the most beautiful purple orchids while I was having my tooth worked on. She didn't even know me and she did the most thoughtful act imaginable it left me speechless with gratitude. My mother loved Purple orchids. Bottom line, kind people, superb dentistry.
