great food, great vibes, great chef -- this is all you need in a restaurant. we started off with some scrumptious grape leaves which was an excellent beginning to the experience. but before we took a deep dive in the entree, we had fresh baklava which was a bit cold but the flavor was amazing. finally, the maqluba chicken, came delicately presented on the table. the chicken was filled with spices that remind you of hot and musty middle east. taking our taste buds through a wonderful tour of the region, the plate was presented with tasteful sliced potatoes and rice. as gratitude for dining in at the restaurant, we received complimentary coffee which was very grounded and had unique taste. overall my favorite restaurant in rochester. it stands out from the rest of rochesters restaurant scene, and it's a must try forsure.

Amazing food, and you could tell the owner cared about everybody in our group's orders. The food was authentic and definitely worth coming back for!

Clockwise from top left: tabbouleh, olives and peppers, baba ghanouj, hummus, and falafel.

We recently spent some time in Rochester and came across Middle East Restaurant. We tried the tabbouleh, baba ghanouj, hummus and falafel. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy, but the food is fresh and authentic. The tabbouleh has the perfect balance of parsley, bulgar wheat, sweet onions, lemon juice and seasoning. The baba ghanouj has the right texture of mashed roasted eggplant and blend with garlic and seasonings. The hummus is big strain that the flavor is very rich and the texture is smooth and creamy. I am not a vegan, but eating food like this would cater to many vegans seeking very flavorful Middle Eastern cuisine. I lived in the Detroit metro area for many years and was exposed to excellent Middle Eastern food in Dearborn, which is home to the largest Arab-American population. The food at Middle East restaurant is definitely on par with that.

I'm amazed every time I come here. I come here very often and have send a tremendous amount of improvement in the food authenticity, friendly staff, and their work demeanor. They do a great job changing there meals/orders according to their customer specifications. I highly recommend the mixed grill meat combo if it's your first time because it has a variety of foods. Enjoy!

Ask the Community - Middle East Restaurant

I understand that they serve Middle Eastern/Arabic/Levantine dishes but from which country? Essentially, I am asking which country (or counties) the owner/chefs are from.

Delicious sums up my first experience at Lumi.. I have wanted to try this restaurant for the past…read moreyear, but with so many options in the downtown Rochester area, I tend to choose the same places. This time I chose Lumi and was not disappointed! From the very flavorful appetizer ( Muhammara) that I will crave forever complimentary puff bread, to the savory Turkish take on a beef stroganoff..which left our mouths filled with warm, toasty spice flavors.. which lingered well after the meal was done, to a more simple but equally as perfect in its own right.. Schnitzel! Crispy. Crust.. the best garlic mashed potatoes & both dishes came with a generous side of roasted Brussel sprouts! There was so much food & we brought leftovers home! We both are excited to return - & talked about the food the whole way home! Our server was helpful & explained what the items were and the interior of the restaurant is tastefully decorated, upscale (but we walked in casual & did not feel out of place). Lumi would be a perfect place for a date.. or with a group of friends!

Came to Lumi at 5:00p on Friday we were able to be seated right away. I love the mezze platter you get to try a bunch of the unique dips including hummus, baba ghanoush and girit (one of my favorites it had feta, pistachio, basil and walnuts), the carrot tarator surprised me it really highlighted the sweetness of the carrots, also enjoyed the muhamara which has red bell peppers walnut, sesame and tomato paste. This also come with a puffy bread. I unfortunately forgot to ask about tea but I enjoyed my Turkish delight martini. Just know it's definitely on the sweet side. My aunt has a nut allergy and they were super helpful pointing out which dips and other menu items would be safe for her. The food came out super fast! Many in my group wanted to order the lamb chops but they were out. Makes me think that's one of the star menu items. The next best was the lamb shank which was very enjoyable nice tender meat cooked in the lamb juices served with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. I had the beef stroganoff. I feel like it's the first time actually ordering it from a restaurant. This was not the version I've seen before with thick gravy and egg noodles. It was a colorful dish of peppers generous beef tenderloin strips and a savory mushroom sauce served also with mashed potatoes and Brussels sprouts. As a table we ordered a lot of different things I was very happy with my options and am always happy to try new things!! Thanks for a great dinner!

Their online ordering system is super easy to use, and ordering in person is just as smooth. The menu has such a good variety, everything from fresh salads to wraps and kebab plates. Honestly, everything I've tried has been so good. The garlic sauce is a must, it's incredible. My go-to is the shawarma unwrapped because you get a huge portion and can build it exactly how you want. The food is fantastic and the portions are very generous. The space is clean with plenty of seating, and the staff is amazing. They're so friendly and always make sure you have everything you need.

Ambiance was ok - more of a diner style. Very casual. High chairs available, which was a plus for us. I got the gyro wrap and my husband got the Lebanese wrap ( not pictured). The gyro wrap was pretty good, and I loved the garlic sauce that it came with. However, the fries they came with were a bit on the soggier side - not crispy and not too much flavor. The Lebanese wrap had good flavor but it was smaller than my husband and I were expecting. It was probably half the size of my gyro wrap since it was thinner. My kids liked the grilled chicken place and rice that they had. The chicken had great flavor. The portions overall though are on the smaller side, especially when compared to restaurants in Minneapolis or St. Paul. Food was pretty good, but nothing out of the ordinary. I liked it overall though and thought it was a fun and different option to try in the south suburbs.
