We were already behind on getting the inspection so we just paid it. But recently I heard my brother and another family friend took their cars for inspections and they were both also about $3,000. I Honestly had such a good experience here. I walked in without an appointment and the front desk girl was so nice and got me right in. I let them know I only had 45 mins and they made sure I was done in 45 mins. They explained everything to me but were not at all pushy about anything. The waiting area was super comfortable with recliners. I chatted with the front desk girl and she had nothing but nice things to say about the owner and how well he treated his people. Took a 2021 car in for inspection and they said we needed to flush the brake lines. My *golden retriever* husband obliged and now we've been swindled for $264. Called to ask why they'd take advantage and a very rude guy said 3 years OR 36k miles emphasis on the or. I have been using Midas for more than 10 years... but not usually on a Sunday, so I had to check their hours and was SHOCKED to see their Stars Rating on YELP. "How could they not be FIVE stars?!??!?", I wondered. And so I started reading the reviews, and disagree with the stuff that the "negatrons" giving 1 Star Ratings have written. They have a GREAT staff. They are friendly and polite, they communicate every step of the way, they always explain what needs to be done, what the recommended course of action is and give me an estimate of the cost. Unlike most mechanics they are never condescending or make me feel like I should know something just because I'm a guy, and when I am looking at multiple issues at once because my truck is 15+ years old, they give me recommendations on how to sequence the repairs to fit my budget. I totally agree with the comment that the waiting area is tight, and not conducive to working in. But it's better than any independent mechanics shop that I have seen in town. The dealerships for my car, or my wife's car are spacious but I can't work in their waiting room either, because they always have a TV blaring or worse yet, multiple TV's on different channels. Thats what is BRILLIANT about Midas... loaner cars. They have tons of them, so I don't have to wait. I can run errands and swing by the house to drop off my stuff or do some work while waiting. And frankly some of them are newer and nicer than ALL of the cars at my disposal (my truck, my wife's car, or the one that our kids share). More important than all those things, they do a LOT in the community. I started going there because of the opportunity to get a free inspection if you donated to FeedMore. Then I realized they organized blood drives. Then i learned that all the stickers on their loaners were all the non profits they support. Heck, that's worth three stars just on its own. IMO, there isn't a better place to go and I've recommended dozens of folks over the years and have never heard anything but glowing remarks once they have gone to Midas. Do not ever go here. I was quoted 17 hours of book time and $218 per hour for a timing chain job for my 2013 Ford F150 ecoboost when the book time for this job no matter what system you use is 10-12 hours maximum. Not to mention they charge like 4x on parts compared to what they get them for usually right next door from Carquest or advanced auto. Also $218 per hour for labor? I can take it to the dealer and they charge $160 an hour. Not sure who these guys think they are but the only people taking their vehicle here are the ones that have no familiarity of anything in this industry. read more

I was impressed that Midas supports our local community via numerous sponsorships. I have had great experiences with how they answer the phones and make appointment. I had my car inspected and was told needed new front and back brakes and rotors. I asked how much?? Was quoted $1600 but they could do it right then. I then called the local Nissan dealership.. they quoted $850 for the same exact job. I shared that with Midas service manager and agreed to cut the price to $1100. So just wanted to share that Midas has a higher labor rate than dealerships. They will say we provide great service, have loaner cars, give back to the community which is great .. but of course we are paying for that. So I would recommend getting a second quote for high dollar repairs and if you are not in a hurry consider another option. Yes time is money but most would agree that $1600 was a shock and some older people or trusting women may not know what a reasonable price would be. It took about an hour for Midas to complete the job. They were courteous and professional. Clearly repairing inspection failures right away was nice but wow $750 more than a dealership was jaw dropping. read more

The pandemic back log at my car dealership forced me to have to find an alternative maintenances spot in the neighborhood. It's not easy taking a chance on a place for something important like your car. I'll admit, I was always on the fence about this place bc it seems that it's always packed with cars, which in my brain reads they aren't actually fixing the cars lol, but in my rationale brain I know that also says lots of people use them and for whatever reason people don't pick up their cars in a timely manner. The first time I used this business, I had an oil change done. It was pricier than my dealership, but they had a promotion to get the next oil change free. So, that was a good deal and the service and communication was good. Recently, I returned for an oil change and stats inspection, which they got me in about 4 days after calling for an appointment, which is good these days. They are pretty quick and efficient and communicate well without trying to upsell a bunch of stuff, which I hate. The front desk people are all nice. The only thing I wish could change is the waiting area be separate, bigger, and cleaner. It's just in the one area with the front desk, and just not the 'get work done' while waiting for my car kind of place that I'm used to, and best for my schedule. It's a good neighborhood spot though that I think is a trusted place in the area, and I'd return when and if needing minor service or maintenance. read more

I dropped my vehicle off to Midas for a state inspection. I was impressed that they provided loaner cars to use for free. Around 5 hours later, they called to tell me that they can't pass the vehicle because one of the tire's lugnuts was missing. I thought they would just be able to replace that, but they told me they would have to take apart the wheel and braking system to make sure nothing else was affected, and that would cost $130! That didn't seem right to me -- so I took the car from them, and went to Discount Tire, since they do all my tire work. They looked at the tire and told me there was nothing wrong with it -- in about two minutes, they replaced a new lugnut for free and I was on my way. Discount Tire couldn't believe that Midas tried to make me pay $130 for that. I did take the car back to Midas because they have a two-week policy on state inspections where they will review the part that was flagged, and if that's addressed, they'll pass the vehicle. They just saw that there was a new lugnut on there, and they passed the car. Overall, I was impressed that Midas provided loaner cars for free and has the two-week policy. But they're dishonest mechanics when it comes to their work, and I won't be taking my vehicles back to them. I would strongly caution others from going to Midas as well. read more

STILL NOT AN HONEST SHOP! "See my Facebook review". Years ago, I brought our mini van in for a state inspection (60,000 miles) They told me it needed 2 wheel bearings, break pads and rotors on all 4 whees. Also, the master cylinder "may start leaking soon" need to replace it ASAP. $2200. I looked and didn't see any fluid leaks and the wheels didn't have any wiggle movement when I jacked the front end up. This didn't sit well. I refused and was given the cold shoulder, like I was "in-convincing them", the guilt tactics were strong! I knew something was fishy.. I changed the break pads myself and took the car down to a different shop after I told the owner of the experience I had. He looked the van over and it passed with flying colors. He told me the wheel bearings were perfect and the rotors had plenty of life left. STAY AWAY! read more

Warning! This shop is one of "those ones" that will attempt to rip you off. Took my old 1999 Toyota there for an inspection. Drives fine, rides fine, goes down the road safely, all lights work, all systems work, no check engine lights. Of course, it came back failed. Midas tech stated that I needed new shocks and steering rack. The shocks I pretty much knew needed to be done, but what took me aback was the price that they wanted to charge. The quote was for $735! For those unfamiliar, the parts themselves for decent quality pair of shocks is about $130 off Amazon. It requires about four to five hours of labor to put them in, using mostly basic tools. Total rip-off, and for junky off-brand shocks to boot. Steering rack was another matter entirely. The incompetent tech told me that it was leaking all over the place, and probably was not safe to even drive home. I asked him if that was true, how he had even managed to pull it into their bay without difficulty; he had no good answer there. I then took him out to his shop, pulled the dipstick for the power steering fluid, and showed him clean new fluid at the proper level. The "leak" was just grease and grime, it's a 23 year old truck for goodness sake. So there went the $1200 he wanted for that "repair." He did at least remove that from the failed inspection items. Bottom line, stay away from this place. They will use Virginia's state inspection process as an opportunity to rip you off and charge you way too much money for repairs that you might not even need. One star is too good for them. read more

Came in for a fuel injector cleaning with the knowledge that replacing one of them may be a possibility. The shop manager called and said it had a misfire which I was obviously aware of, hence why I brought it in. I was initially quoted around $200 for the cleaning. But the manager stated they wouldn't touch the car without a full diagnostic run that would be an additional $200 that would not be deducted from the final repair if I chose to have them do any additional work. So the diagnostic came back with the misfire in the cylinder that I had brought it in for and it needed all six injectors replaced. So I paid for a diagnostic to determine what I already told them was wrong and why I brought the car in. So now I need all six injectors replaced though only one is bad. But that is not all, I also need to replace all six spark plugs too. The rub is that all six were replaced a week prior. He also came back with many other problems that had also been recently repaired, including oxygen sensors. So how much does replacing injectors and sparks cost? Over $2000. Yea so, I don't have that kind of money. So how much if I get the parts myself? Over $900 just to replace them. And he will only install one specific brand of sparks. of course the most expensive ones. So I find those, have to go to multiple stores to get all six (even though they were just replaced). I take the parts to him once I get them and ask to talk to him directly cause I want the sparks he takes out of my car back since they were just purchased. He also has me sign the estimate and says that the induction service should still be completed. Okay fine. Conveniently they have a credit card that I was able to be approved for and he managed to make it cost the full limit of the card. While there, he also informs me that they up charge the service when you get your own parts because parts is how they make money. So he would've charged me over $1000 for $150 worth of parts. So repairs are done, I have my car back. Cool right? Nope. A misfire starts again within a week. Now in a different cylinder. I went and had the codes read and found out where it is. It's wild cause all the injectors were changed and the induction service was completed. Now I have a regular mechanic who has put a lot of work into my car lately. I went to Midas doe the fuel injectors simply due to circumstances. My mechanic called the shop and said he barely talked to them and didn't give much information on things that needed to be done. My regular mechanic also has a wide network of colleagues that they have reached out to about my car most specifically in this recent case. So with this newest misfire and the shop saying the brand new o2 sensors are bad, my mechanic wanted to start there. When they got under my car, it was noticed that one plug had burned up because the wires were cut and two others had been unplugged. Then when trying to get under the hood, it was found that not only was the hood not closed correctly, the latch was bend so far that it wouldn't go into the lock. They also pulled the spark plug on the misfiring cylinder, the specific one that the shop said they had to have, and it is already burned up. It looked worse that the brand new ones that he had taken out of my car. So now I have a $1500 bill and the problem was never solved. read more

Beware! I took my horse trailer in for an inspection after making a 7:30am appointment and was told by Brad that the bearings on the front axle needed repacking and I needed a new emergency brake battery, but all else was fine. I Paid $912.33 for this work. I then left with trailer and drove 2 miles before the left rear wheel locked up completely and I had to pull over. I called Brad at Midas and he said, "huh, we never took off the back wheels, so that's strange". I was able to return to Midas after putting the trailer in reverse and dislodging whatever had been blocking the wheel. After 5 hours, Brad finally took the truck wheel off and said "your brake just disintegrated" and I could see pieces of the brake pads had fallen on the floor. When I mentioned that he had just inspected everything and signed off on "BRAKES OK", he said he didn't look at the brakes, but he could tell they were ok by pressing on the brake pedal. I reminded him that the law states at least one wheel must be removed for inspection on an axle with brakes. He replied "that law changed". Nope, it did not. He then said he would order new brakes and call me the next morning. I received the call, during which he said "your front brakes are ok, so I only ordered back brakes. We saw the front brakes yesterday and they are fine". When I picked up the trailer today I asked about the the front brakes and he said "you don't have front brakes". So, which is it? They looked fine or I don't have any? There were multiple lies told to me during this interaction, most concerning of which was the lie about them not being required to look at the brakes for an inspection. The laws are very clear for anyone wishing to read them. This could have been extremely dangerous if I had been hauling a horse. Maybe they don't take women seriously. Take your business elsewhere. read more

I went into the shop due to a flat tire, I read the bad reviews (I completely understand and agree with them now) however I always try to give people an honest shot. I dropped my car off on a Sunday afternoon and told the representative that I did not mind having my car serviced the following morning if there was no time left in the day. She stated that my car would be the first looked at car in the morning. When I did not hear anything at 3pm on my car I went to the shop for an update. When I arrived at the shop my car had not moved and the tire was still flat. When I went into the shop the representative told me my car had not been looked at yet.I did not have my service completed until the following day Monday, at 5pm. This experience has ruined me trying to give businesses the 'benefit of the doubt' forever . Brad Krueger the "service appraiser" probably could use a few classes in customer support and experience. If belittling could be defined as an individual it would be Brad. I will never EVER returning to this establishment and will continue to ensure those I know do not support this business. If you want to be taken advantage of then sure support this shop but if you want honest car care with friendly customer supporting people I highly, highly do not recommend. So at first this shop seemed very good and professional but I was wrong. I took a 2009 Honda Accord to this shop for a state inspection. They called me later on that day to say that it would not pass due to side marker lights being out. I asked okay how much will it be to swap them out ? 30 dollars ? The receptionist stated oh no it's going to be 110 dollars to do it for you. I told them to go ahead and reject it and I would bring it back the following day I. Which they tried to say they couldn't get it to it and making it an inconvenience. I took the car home and swapped out lights that took me 2 mins to do. I'm all for supporting business's but when you are scamming people 110 dollars for 6.99 bulbs that's wrong in more ways than one. I have already started telling people to not go to Midas in short pump anymore due to the scam they are doing. Upon bringing my car back the following day I dropped it off and the gentlemen stated to me he didn't know if they would get it done for the next couple days in which I replied I'm dropping it off and the only thing y'all have to check are the lights in which he scoffed at my rebuttal. We have had so many good experiences with Midas. They have replaced my breaks, done state inspections and oil changes for my husband and ended up replacing his tires as he needed them after said inspection. They are always kind, very forthright with issues and pricing and do not try to talk you into something you don't need. We always do the MOR at your door, where they pick up your car, leave a loaner and then bring it back when it's done. It's an amazing service and never makes us be without a car. I will continue to recommend them. They are also wonderful forces in the community donating milk every week to FeedMore and doing other community wide charity events. read more

On the way home on Friday afternoon I got a flat tire. When I walked in, I said " I know it's Friday afternoon and you are busy, but I have an emergency since I got a flat". The lady at the desk was gruff and ill-mannered. First said it would be a few hours before they could get to it. After some delay, finally took my info. More waiting, she went out to my car, and without even looking at the hole in the tire, said "we don't even have this size of tire" not knowing if it could be fixed. I said fine, please let me air up the tire so I can get to the dealer, who said they were willing to help me. Pull up to the first bay, she said. I did so and waited, waited, waited. .... I went back in and she said" we are busy and will help you as soon as we can". I suggested she let me have a hose so I could fill the tire( I am an ASE certified technician). A few more minutes later, a nice young man came out and helped me. Through the door, I could see the shop was cluttered and messy. Not professional at all. Maybe less money on the big advertising board out front and more on safety and equipment. A few minutes later I was at the dealership where they were friendly and helped me right away. This Midas shop is on a busy corner in Short Pump and has no nearby competitor so they think they can get away with poor customer service. The promised time and cost was delivered and the car drives as it should. Thank you for this. The one callout is the expense of parts. The parts that were replaced had the same part numbers as NAPA but were over double the cost of NAPAs web price. So for a pair of "Control Arm w/ Ball Joint - Front Suspension", NAPA charges $365 while Midas charged $826 for the pair. A bit stiff of a markup. Be aware. read more

They want to have commercials now about helping people prevent their catalytic converters being stolen, but when I went there 2.5 years ago they saw I was using insurance to have it replaced, and it suddenly went from $2500 to $5000 because their mechanic failed to remove parts properly. Luckily I was able to tow my truck to a shop that fixed it properly and didn't try to make extra money from my insurance. read more

My experience at Midas today: (Please note that before I visit any repair shops or restaurants, I always read the prior Yelp reviews). At 9:00 a.m., I arrived at Midas for a brake inspection. At 9:35 a.m., the technician called my name and escorted me to my car. The results were: 1. No brake issues at all. 2. The squeal sound is due to early morning moisture. 3. You are good to go. My experiences at this Midas have always been positive and professional. I never felt as if this location was trying to gauge me in any way. DO NOT take your car here for inspection. For years I've heard that they always find something wrong in the inspection. For convenience (close to home) we dropped off our 4Runner fully expecting it to be quick and easy. Our son had it lifted a year earlier so we were shocked when they told us the ball joints were completely loose and needed to be replaced ("unsafe to drive"). They slapped on a rejection notice, charged us $20, and we took the car for a second opinion where it passed with flying colors. The same day two friends told me the exact same story- loose ball joints that needed to be replaced to pass inspection but were fine when they took the cars somewhere else. In addition, we had a 7am appointment and at 5pm I called to check on the status because I hadn't heard anything. It was a horrible experience all around. read more

I just had a conversation with Brat, a rep from Short Pump Midas facility in Richmond, Va. He questioned my original review of my recent experience at Midas on Hull Street, Richmond VA. A couple days ago my truck broke down, I had it towed to Midas, they did a diagnostic, informed me it was my fuel pump, and offered to replace it for over $1000!!! They also offered not to charge me for the diagnostic they performed which I guess would save me a couple of dollars. Long story short, I paid $58 for diagnostic, had my truck towed back to my house, bought another fuel pump for $170, then installed it myself within 45 minutes! I understand we would naturally spend more at a auto repair shop but $1000 seemed quite steep. Anyways, Brat informed me that the part they would have gotten would cost over $500 and labor over $400. I could have made out better at an actual Dodge dealership! Brat later requested that I deter from uploading reviews about my experience at Midas....so this is for you Brat! Honest and friendly! I had just gone through the Aw Shucks car wash on Pountcey Tract Road, more like Awe Shit car wash. My car was dragged through the car wash with the left side dragging and catching on the metal bumpers which left me with a half clean car and a nice flat tire. Long story short, I had to use Fix a Flat to get moving and went to Merchants (too busy) which then led me to Midas. Natashya at the front desk was extremely nice and helpful and got me worked into the schedule which was excellent. Ryan the mechanic advised me that he dunk checked (in water) the tire/wheel for leaks, took off the tire off the rim and cleaned out all the fix a flat, reinstalled and mounted the tire then dunk tested it again and good to go and explained that car wash tire bumpers had knocked my tire off the rim (low profile) but thankfully there was nothing wrong with the tire. Great service, quality and speed. I will definitely be back. read more

Came here for a state inspection. I was a woman by myself and they totally took advantage. A $16 inspection all of a sudden turned into $700 to have my car ready to pass. My car runs fine and I really got the feeling that the mechanic was just trying to make a quick buck. I read other reviews and should have known not to come here. However, it was close to my house and I thought it would be convenient. Boy was I wrong. I will never come to another Midas again in life. I recommend you stay away as well. It's a corporate set up designed to take your money. The Midas touch is actually the Midas robbery. To top it all off, when I was ready to leave, they held my car hostage for nothing. Everyone loves those free oil change coupons, am I right? None of us are particularly good w cars so we trusted Mark's team to do it right. MARK, IF YOU ARE SUCH AN HONEST BUSINESS OWNER AS YOU SAY, READ THROUGH MY REVIEW AND GIVE THE PEOPLE AN ANSWER FOR THIS NONSENSE. My final service writer is Brad K although idk if he's the one who typed up the estimate. There is no service writer on my estimate. In the last 2 years or so my car has had problems left and right as discovered by Midas. I have a ~10 year old Toyota corolla, and everyone knows that car lasts forever if you perform the right repairs. I started wondering why Midas kept finding sooo many problems. After telling my coworkers about the $600 Midas charged me to get my axle replaced, they (older men) urged me (a small Asian woman) to seek a second opinion next time. FAST FORWARD to this month when I took my car to Midas for an oil change. They called me (literally at 3:50 pm ish when they close at 4 and I dropped the car off at 9 am) with $1600 worth of "recommended repairs": replacement air filters, battery leaking acid, and replacements for FRONT AND REAR STRUCTS. If you know ANYTHING about cars, you'll be a little suspicious about this. They also didn't clarify the reason for the replacement, even though my car runs perfectly fine. I knew something was fishy (1. My battery was newish. Literally only 1 years old from advance auto zone so it was still under warranty if anything did happen 2. Why would the front AND rear structs both need to be replaced?). I declined all the recommended fixes, paid for my oil change, and went to get 2nd opinion elsewhere. First, we popped open the hood of my car and took out the air filter. It was like new. You can see through it while holding it up to the sun. The air filter did not need replacing. Then, I took my car to another mechanic for a second opinion. He pushed down on the front and back of my car, checked the structs, and then the wear patterns on my tires. I also took a look under and there is no leaking, no weird bouncing, and my tires are worn evenly. There is literally nothing wrong w my struts. The 2nd mechanic also looked at my battery-- there is a little corrosion which is easily cleaned, but he couldn't find evidence of a leaking battery. Basically out of Midas' $1600 of immediate and recommended repairs, ALMOST EVERYTHING WAS FAKE. I understand upcharging for professional services. I even understand everyone is trying to make a quick buck, BUT THIS IS BORDERLINE FRAUDULENT. I'm really regretting all the money I spent at Midas in the past for "necessary" repairs. You folks at Midas are probably right that I'm no good with cars. However, I am good at talking and I will be telling everyone I know about my experience. Needless to say, my entire family and all of our vehicles will no longer be serviced at Midas. If anyone needs a free "oil change" coupon, you can find mine in the trash :) read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. My exhaust pipe disconnected due to rust which appears to be a common problem for the make and model of my vehicle. I really wanted to support a business that seems to give back so much to the community, so I went to the Midas at Short Pump to get an estimate of cost and an idea of how long the type of repair would take so I could make arrangements for the following week. The lady behind the counter said they would have to look at the vehicle (ummm, yeah that's what I would expect when someone gives an estimate) because she said these type of repairs could be as low as a couple hundred dollars or as high as.... She didn't give me a number, but I needed to know what I could be looking at, since the VA State Inspection was due, which I pointed out is why I needed the estimate to get the repair done for the inspection. Although she did not want to help me, (it was about 30 minutes before closing), the guy did reluctantly take my vehicle back to give an estimate. Within 5 minutes he came back with the estimate that was just two dollars shy of $1500. I did not want to believe they would over inflate the cost, so I went by a smaller shop that has a very good reputation. When he looked, he said he could replace the muffler which would be about $300 as long as there was no other rust issues, so I asked worse case if there were other issues and he said he would have to replace the other side for a total of $700....really less than half as worst case? I was told that muffler places can sometimes weld out the rusted areas, but of course since Midas was going to charge to replace everything, then that must not have been an option in my case, right? I really wanted to believe that it was not weldable and that Midas' quote was fair, so just for peace of mind, I decided to just stop by Meineke, which was just down the street on Parham Road to see what they said. The gentleman there was so nice and personable. They pulled it right in and within a few minutes he told me it would be $160 to weld it. I know I must have seemed surprised because he confirmed that was all it needed and he could have it done within the hour. He turned on the tv for me and chatted between calling customers to let them know their vehicles were ready while my car was being worked on. The atmosphere was so different at Meineke than it was at Midas, because you could tell home much they cared about their customers. While I waited (which was only about 30 minutes), I saw how this gentleman interacted with his repeat regular customers. A young man and his mom came in asking a question about an issue they were having with one of the lugnuts on their tire and this gentleman went right out and fixed it explaining exactly what was going on with it. This is the type of service I wish I had of received at Midas, but at least now I know where I will refer anyone with muffler issues (and even other automotive issues)...Meineke not Midas. read more
