I had my 1993 Geo Prizm (Corolla platform) towed in for an overheating issue and was quoted $2,200 for a water pump, timing belt, and accessory belts. That is significantly above typical pricing for this job, especially given shared labor. After the repair: * The car now has constant belt noise that did not exist before * I have an intermittent check engine light (first time in 1,500+ miles of driving) * Fuel economy and engine smoothness have noticeably worsened * Coolant used was generic yellow instead of Toyota-compatible coolant * Coolant reservoir was not filled * A piece of my front grille was broken, leaving the headlight loose, with no disclosure I also felt rushed and dismissed when asking to see the vehicle and understand the diagnosis. A knock sensor was added at the last minute without clear verification. At this price point, I expected either OEM parts or dealership-level quality and documentation. I received neither. And at minimum, I expected to be treated with a minor level of respect ... for which I received none. When I brought the car back for them to follow up on their work, I got a defensive and standoffish attitude. I insisted that there was a possibility that the knock sensor, was merely doing its job in emitting a code 52 in my car with an OBD1 system ... I suggested that perhaps the timing belt had not been tension properly to spec. Well, this was enough to set shop manager/service "advisor" Bobby off, to the point that he responded; "I've been working on cars for 40 years. I'm not gonna listen to you tell me how a timing belt works" He then slammed my hood shut and walked inside, as if he thought 'case closed, I showed him'. This being the treatment and attitude I received after spending over $2000 at his shop a price indicating that their shop's labor rate is either higher than the Mercedes dealership in San Francisco or that they worked on this car for over 12 hour. The entire quote is over $1000 more than other places would've quoted for the same work (on what is essentially a 1993 Corolla, the most reliable and serviceable economy car ever produced) and a price that is $300 more than the labor fee I would encounter at an actual Toyota dealership who quoted me $1300 in labor charges for the same work to be completed to manufacturer specifications with OEM parts;and nonetheless, I took my vehicle to a Toyota dealership service, where they had confirmed to me that my belt had been tensioned too tightly and could critically endanger my pulleys and the water pump that was just replaced. Not only was the work shoddy but the attitude and blatant disrespect given to someone who paid over $2000 and said "thank you" at the end of every interaction was absolutely uncalled for and reflects horribly on the entire business as a staff, automotive repair shop and Midas as a brand I recommend getting a second opinion before authorizing major work here, especially if your vehicle is already towed in and you're under time pressure. If you're gonna pay these rates, just take your car to a dealership service department where you will get actual OEM parts rather than whatever is available at the local parts store in a dealership service department they will actually treat you better, offer you a coffee and perhaps even a shuttle service home, none of this is the case at Midas in Barstow and unless furnishing payment from a municipal or law enforcement budget they probably don't have too much respect for you. They probably think very low of you for not doing your own mechanic work - as evident by the response "I've been working on cars for 40 years you're not going to tell me how a timing belt works". So remember, their shop manager had been working on cars for over 40 years and he's not gonna listen to you tell him what a timing belt does, or what standard of quality service is acceptable. That was my experience here the absolute most blatant disrespect I've ever encountered with somebody that I spent over $2000 with. If that's acceptable to you go ahead and give them your business. Otherwise I recommend that you get towed anywhere else. Now for full disclosure shop advisor, Bobby, did call me about an hour after slamming my hood down and walking inside and he apologized for the way that he spoke to me and in the automotive world, it is absolutely rare for anyone to apologize to you - Even your insurance company will insist that you do not apologize if you're at fault in a collision because this admits fault. so I applaud that he took the initiative to call and do that, it takes a big man to apologize ... but Bobby, just imagine if the shoe was on other foot and this was your car and you just paid a generous $2000, all for someone to deliver you defective work and then talk to you like that read more

Our family van broke down near Boron, at midnight, packed to the ceiling with camping and rafting equipment on the way to Utah. With a 4am tow to Barstow, we randomly googled a Midas outlet, hoping the franchise had a reputation to uphold. Could have been a disaster, but we are SO FORTUNATE to have stumbled upon this place!!! They saved our trip! Everyone at this Midas shop was fantastic to work with... Arian, the owner, opened a bit early to take us in, and knowing our dire situation, scrambled to get us diagnosed quickly. (It was the day before Easter Sunday...) He was juggling 6 or 7 customers, and a parking lot full of vehicles, but was visibly focused on serving each individual professionally and efficiently. It was clear from the crowd of customers streaming in on a Saturday morning, that this shop is popular and busy for a good reason. The turnover was quick and efficient, with old changes, tuneups, and major repairs rolling in and out of their 4 workshop bays. All the mechanics seemed hard-working and engaged. Within an hour or so, he laid out a few options for us, detailing the estimated costs, and time needed. He coached us on ordering parts directly, to try to accelerate their arrival at his shop. When it was clear that we could not get an obscure part for our old Eurovan in time to make our rafting trip start date, he advised us on dependable vehicle rental outlets in town. We rented a Uhaul van, and successfully made it to Utah in time for our week-long wilderness rafting trip. During the drive I spoke with several folks at this Midas shop (Arian, Angela, Kenny, etc.), and set up repair plans A and B. Because I would be offline and out of cell-phone range for 5 days, we pre-approved additional work & options, if needed, to move on to plan C. When we raced back through Barstow, on a Sunday, the shop was closed, but everything was exactly as promised. Key hidden in the right spot... Old parts in a box in the van... Receipts for everything on the seat... And best of all, the cheapest repair option worked out & the van ran smooth and safe all the way home to Northern Cal. Thank you Midas! I now have a dependable shop to recommend to friends en route to SW rafting, desert trips, and Joshua Tree NP. read more

I have depended on the Midas in Barstow to care for my aging PT Cruiser ever since the place across the street (that shall remain nameless) insulted me and ripped me off about 8 years ago. I have seen 3 different owners at this facility, all demonstrating the same high quality service and a sense of personal concern for me and my vehicle. The new owner, Arian, and his crew, Martee, Chris, Kenny and all the guys who put up with my crazy car problems, are caring and concerned. Chris is expert at overseeing the work of the mechanics to assure that a high degree of quality is maintained on the repairs. He also explains in laymen terms what is wrong so that you can understand it, and make an intelligent decision about what action to take. I literally trust these people with my life, since I put a lot of miles on my car as a real estate agent, and spend a lot of time on the road. I cannot begin to enumerate the times that they have gone above and beyond when i have had roadside emergencies over the years. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciate having the comfort of knowing that when I take my car to them, I am taking it to "family" and can implicitly trust them to do right by me and my vehicle. Like most of the reviews, I was driving through. Coming in from Las Vegas my brakes began making a horrific sound. Being just my daughter and I ,I was concerned about stopping for help and getting swindled. I chose Midas because of the familiar name and I could not have been happier. To begin I was a wreck by the time I got to the store as my car was now violently shaking and grinding when I stepped on the brakes. They were so kind and helped me calm. They diagnosed my car, offered me the bare minimum to get back on the road up to the most thorough job. I chose in the middle. They explained and showed me everything, went over the reasons for the costs. Not once did I feel spoken down to. While I waited for my work to be done I was impressed by the people who would come in for work to be done. It was like they had come to visit family. Everyone talking, telling stories, just plain friendly. I was offered water and coffee while I waited. The bathroom was clean, I mention this because I have not been at very many auto repair shops where the bathrooms are not filthy. Over all I could not have asked for a better experience considering my situation. Thank you! read more

My F-250 got towed into Midas in Barstow about a month and a half ago needing a new engine. Everyone I had the experience of talking to at the establishment was courteous, knowledgeable and, most of all, empathetic to the fact that I needed a new engine. In what I have heard called the Bermuda Triangle for car repairs in Southern California, Midas Barstow really helped me out with their professionalism of installing a new engine and along with other things that also needed to be done to the vehicle. Ie, new radiator, a/c condenser, intake manifold, and rear joints. Honestly, before I had my truck towed in I just stereotyped Midas as just simply a muffler shop and oil change place. With all the above work named, I can assure you that my opinion of at least this Midas is that they know their sh*t! I would 100 % trust them with my vehicle again. Thank you to Dan, Ayrian, Josh, Ronnie and Amber for all of your hardwork in helping transform what was a vehicle disaster in my mind into a solution going forward. I am absolutely disgusted by the experience I had at this mechanic shop. I brought in my 2013 Chevy Sonic for what I thought was a simple repair, only to be hit with a $6000 bill for tearing open my engine. When I realized the cost was outrageous and asked them to stop work, they just threw engine parts in the back hatch, causing oil to leak all over the interior and leaving parts missing. Not only did they charge me for labor for disassembly and reassembly that never actually occurred, they never reimbursed me the difference. There was no apology, no compensation, and no effort to make things right. It is clear that this company thrives on taking advantage of people and their lack of ethics is truly appalling. I would strongly advise against using this mechanic shop and urge others to steer clear of their dishonest and predatory business practices. It is clear that they do not have the best interest of their customers in mind and should not be trusted with any vehicle repairs. read more

I pulled into this Midas' parking lot 5 minutes after closing time on Thursday, Sep 17, 2015 on our way to Northern California - after driving almost 200 miles with the Check Engine Light on. I explained the symptoms to the guys that were about to leave for the day and they suggested I bring it in at 7:45 the next morning - which I did. Within an hour or so, they had the problem figured out and fixed - a stripped bolt and an extra gasket that should not have been on the vehicle which caused the EGR valve to allow air through it when it should be closed (idling). After we left, we travelled another 1300 miles before returning home with no further problems and it still runs great! I was impressed by their knowledge, positive approach, diagnostic abilities, and general good nature. The lady at the counter was very nice and pleasant and the coffee was excellent. I give this company 5-Stars only because there isn't a higher rating! My wife and I were driving from the Inland empire area of So Calif to visit family in Las Vegas when we developed car trouble as we approached the Barstow area. By fate we found Midas. We arrived in the late afternoon and the shop was very busy. The owner, Arian, and his staff made certain we had a diagnosis and plan of action before close of business. Now being past their closing time of 5pm, with car rental locations now being closed, Arian drove us from location to location until we found an available rental car. He did not leave our side until he was certain we were taken care of! This service is WAY above and beyond!! With our family traveling to us or us to them often, it is comforting to know we have a go-to place if we encounter car trouble in the Barstow corridor where they treat you like family! read more

Not normally a place I take my vehicle but had a exhaust smell in my car I needed to have checked out. Was told I needed the exhaust manifold replaced and quoted a price of approx. $400.00 dollars. I agreed to have them replace due to the safety issues. With in a hour the service adviser ( Daniel Chuy ) contacted me and stated that this repair my be covered under a emissions recall by the manufacturer. Long story short the repairs where covered and had repairs performed at a Chevy dealer in Victorville at no charge . Saved me $400.00 dollars. Pickup stopped running on I15 near Barstow. Called around and found Midas in Barstow to be very pleasant and professional on the phone. They gave me a quote on fixing my vehicle (thought it was the fuel pump). Turned out to be something much cheaper. I want to give a BIG THANK YOU to the Midas team, from start to finish they delivered on their promise. The tire valve was letting air out and fast, so we put the spare tire on and headed straight to Midas, Amanda was fast, friendly and very efficient. I was going to this location for many years before having to move. The customer service is great. I had a issue with the transmission on my Nissan 2013 Sentra-which was just out of warranty. We called at about 7:45 Monday morning and Kevin, the owner, was able to take our truck in right away. Our Ford diesel had a coolant leak, and after diagnosing the problem he carefully inspected the rest of the engine and discovered two additional hoses that were also failing. He ordered the correct parts from the Ford dealership and the staff at Elite Auto & Fleet took care of the parts installation. What really stood out was the customer service. Kevin personally drove us back to the KOA RV Park after we dropped the truck off, and then picked us up when the repair was finished. That kind of service is rare these days. Kevin is extremely knowledgeable about diesel engines, very personable, and clearly has his customers' best interests at heart. The price was very reasonable for diesel repair, and the work was completed quickly--we dropped the truck off Monday morning and were back on the road by about 10:00 AM Tuesday.
