So I backed up with Time Machine on a new external hard drive - and lo and behold I haven't been able to use this to set up the MacBook again! Not enough room on the MacBook! There was no indication that there might be any risk, even though I told them of seeming to have more data in the backup than in the original hard drive. I took it back to the store - they were not helpful - all they could suggest was starting again, abandoning all my applications, my Mail folders, my settings...This is not good enough. They picked it up, took it home to Worthing with them, digged around inside and declared it needed more RAM and the system re-installing. They brought back it a few days later and it now runs like clockwork. The icing on the cake, is the fact they talked me through all the options without baffling me with technical descriptions.
