From as far back as I can remember, it's been owned by the same family - a lovely husband and wife team who have a very thick accent which I still haven't been able to place. These guys are terrific! Whenever my dad took me in there, I'd ask for my usual battered sausage and the lady would always call out to her husband who was wrapping and bagging the food, "And a battered sausage for the baby!" In fact, I was referred to as 'the baby' until I was about 18! For some reason they always call my dad Chris as well...his name is John! Anyway, if you go to Wick Fisheries you're always going to be welcomed with a big smile and fast service! The place seems to be stuck in the most delightful time warp. All the original '60s fixtures and fittings are still there, right down to the most ancient cash register you've ever seen in your life (unless of course you were alive any time prior to 1970...I'm only 26 myself!) That fresh squeeze of lemon juice over everything was just Chef's Kiss. SLOW ROASTED LAMB RUMP The lamb was roasted for six hours in red wine and shallots for a delicately, earthy flavor. The meat just melted in your mouth with every forkful. The lamb was served on a tasty bed of fluffy, garlic mashed potatoes. The red wine sauce drizzled on complimented everything perfectly. RIBEYE STEAK Classic steak done right with all the right searing and flavoring. Every bite was juicy and delicious. The roasted vine tomatoes were a great touch. I doubt HM would fuck around with an English tradition, so settled on the safe route of a traditional tea. Then along came the three-tiered platter with the finger sandwiches, scones, and selection of desserts. The sandwiches were good, though nothing exception, but still tasty. What knocked me out with a left-right-uppercut combo though were the scones. By god Her Majesty would be proud! These were the best scones I have ever had in my pathetic life (in comparison to HMTQ). These were so good, that when the hostess came around to ask if I would like seconds (since i had already obliterated everything on my plate like a greedy American bastard would do), i had to weigh that fact that i was ready to pop buttons, and had an indian dinner in 2 hours. Then I thought again, WWHMTQ do? Well, I'm sure she'd sit up straight, brush off the crumbs on her neatly pressed blouse, and say, "BRING IT ON YOU BRIT!". And so that's what I said...but in not so many words. And boy was I happy! Amazing! I left that place like a little school boy who just had his first experience of seeing a girls boob. Through OpenTable, we secured a reservation for 4PM on a Friday (two weeks in advance), and had no issues upon arrival - we were seated within minutes of checking in. High Tea includes a small, hot entree at the beginning, followed by the scones and cakes. For entrees, we had the lobster omelette and cheese souffle, both of which were rich and delicious. There was a slight error when the desserts came, though. With High Tea, the finger sandwiches are omitted, and you just get the scones, cakes, jam, and clotted cream. Instead, they brought over the Afternoon Tea caddy (with sandwiches) and one of the jams was wrong. The waitress came by and saw the error, and asked if we wanted to swap out the sandwiches for macaroons, but we just said it was fine and not to worry about it. She brought them out anyway which was nice, plus that meant we got to sample everything! My absolute favorite was the scones with apricot jam and clotted cream. I could've eaten a whole tower of just that. The cakes were super rich, but very good. The finger sandwiches were light and tasty, with my favorite being the salmon. We each ordered a different premium black tea, and they were simply fabulous, very fragrant and smooth. And all the while, a pianist played popular music in the lobby: the perfect ambiance. I am a sucker for gastropubs, and when searching for places in Hammersmith I noticed great reviews for The Stonemason's Arms. It also came highly recommended from one of the locals. They had a number of interesting sounding menu items, so we decided to head there for dinner. In true gastropub style, the menu is quite varied with some unique options. We decided to split one of the sharing boards and went for the Fish Board. It included Devon crab on toast, shell-on king prawns, London Porter smoked salmon, and mussels and clams. The Devon crab was essentially a crab spread on pieces of toast. Both the crab itself and the toast were tasty. The prawns had the "looking at you" vibe, complete with shell, eyes, etc. This meant there was a bit of work getting them ready to eat, but they were also done quite well with a very nice flavor. The smoked salmon was quite nice, with a good smoky flavor that really brought out the salmon. The mussels and clams were a bit different and almost tasted poached. I was expecting more of a boil, so they ended up not being my favorite, but they were still prepared quite well. Several of the mains sounded good, but after poring over the menu for a bit I finally settled on the lamb shoulder. It was a Hampshire lamb shoulder that had been slow braised for 12 hours and served over broccoli, tomatoes, and Jersey royals. The lamb was fall off the bone tender and had a great flavor. The accompaniments were also well-prepared and complemented the lamb nicely. I would have maybe liked the portion size to be a bit larger, but for the price it was quite good. I had room for dessert, and I decided to try the Treacle Tart, something I had never had before. It had a nice molasses flavor and finished off my dinner perfectly. The Stonemason's Arms has a bit of a fancier pub feel, with lots of beer options and quite the crowd as the night wore on. The service was great and very helpful in answering many of the questions we had. The food came out quickly and fresh, and the quality and bang for your buck was great. The Stonemason's Arms is quite a bit different than anywhere I have been in the US, but I quite enjoyed it and hope to return in the future.
