From their almost pythonesque accents, the staff would all appear to be French. The decor is a little tired and the toilets are somewhat sad which all adds to the genuine France away from France ambience. A langoustine looked up at me, his claws encircling the light puff pastry pie his head was resting on. This starter was a complete success, the sauce was delicious, the prawny morsels were succulent and the pastry casing was lovely. My friend reported that her duck was marvelous, the conversation then drifted back to food and she told me that her salade de canard de l automme was very nice. My entrecote was pleasant if unspectacular but it washed down well with a very drinkable bottle of Bergerac. As I said, it's an unusual place this, I wouldn't make a trip here just for the restaurant, it seems quite popular with people I assume are locals, unsurpising as it is fine faire. Personally, I'd have to be in the area for another reason, but if I was, then this place would be on my eats list.

We all ate of the al a carte menu, it was small but gave great variety - my avocado salad was very fresh and tasty and the steak I had for main course was cooked to perfection. All my companions loved their choices too. Service was efficient but the only thing keeping this from 5 stars - one of the staff was very very surly and the owner wasn't very friendly or welcoming when he showed his face from kitchen - I think he is also the chef. Paid about £50 for 3 courses and lots of wine. Would recommend this restaurant whole heartedly - short walk from Crouch End.

What a gem in a beautiful Hampstead corner. As you walk in, music from the past century transports…read moreyou to a different time... The three course lunch is an absolute deal in this part of town, and the selection of courses from home made pasta, to duck confit (digne of a French brasserie) and vanilla crème brûlée to finish for those with a sweet palette. Upon request for wine recommendations, the owner immediately offered me to try different wines out of which I selected the best pairing for my meal. I could tell locals know about this place since they all greeted each other as they waked in. Perhaps the wine is talking now, but this place made the best of a Fall rainy day in London. I'll be back very soon!

La Cage Imaginaire is a small, delightfully quaint, traditional French-Mediterranean restaurant…read morewhich can be found tucked away in the picturesque cobbled street of Flask Walk in Hampstead. Its interior is intimate, romantic, white-tablecloth elegant - the perfect place for a meal with that someone special or even a quiet business lunch. There's a really good set menu for lunch (served between 11:30 and 17:00): 2 courses for £15.95 and 3 courses for £19.95 - very reasonable considering the quality. I had the amazing Wild Mushroom Risotto topped with Parmesan to start. I loved it. Highly recommended. My friends started with the slightly bland French Onion Soup and a specially prepared, tangy garden salad (not on the menu). I moved on to their Sirloin Steak (250g) which, while tasty, was cooked more medium than the medium-rare I asked for. Like the delicious Stuffed Chicken Breast with Brie Cheese and Wholegrain Mustard Sauce which my companion had, my steak was also served on a bed of mashed potatoes and asparagus; mine with a lovely red wine sauce. The third member of our group didn't have a main, reserving space for a Banana Crepe with Butterscotch Sauce for dessert instead. I finished with the sinfully delightful Dark Chocolate Mousse. Service at La Cage Imaginaire was friendly and attentive thanks to a lovely Italian lady who had visited my home base of Dubai the year before. She was the life and soul of this cute little eatery, effortlessly chitchatting with each of the tables each time she visited them (which was quite frequently). It was so refreshing to have someone add that personal touch. The food at this restaurant is good but it's the service and ambience which convinced me to go back when I am next in London - worth a visit. Hey! And all for a very affordable price :) I sat in the glorious sunshine and basically inhaled a plate of avo, scrambled eggs, feta, softened onions and crispy fired potatoes. With balsamic, because that's how I roll - this plate was worthy of better than mere ketchup! I also indulged in a small but decadent latte, and asked for 'a big water' - so they bought me a nice little jug of tap (which is great, I was nervous they might try the hard sell on bottled - I don't pay for water!). I'd had a chance to eye up the cake counter as I entered, and I could not stop myself from ordering a slice of the lemon meringue pie - it was my favourite dessert as a child and it's been so long since I had some! I was served a HUGE portion, and though it was tasty it just wasn't quite everything I hoped it would be... Probably more my skewed memory than any fault of Ally's Kitchen! The meringue was light as air (but I like mine with more substance), with a lovely browned crisp outer edging. The lemon curd was sweet but still refreshingly tangy, and unfortunately the base was ever so slightly soggy as the lemon filling was quite juicy! I would also say the portion size was a bit unecessary, but who am I to complain about that? I would rather a smaller slice and a smaller price though (£5??) Anyway, overall my experience was delightful - I am hoping to move to the area soon, and will definitely pay another visit or two to this cute, friendly little cafe! My bill totalled £16, including my option to add just over 10% tip. Not bad at all!
