Am grateful this store has cheap t shirts. These Gildan ones work well, for arts and crafts or steaming on funny decals. That's the main reason I go here now. They used to have car models, and also rockets. I'm not sure why they don't sell these anymore, or maybe they are out at this time. This store is huge. They have a lot of items, especially for folks into arts and crafts. Am not really into that, but am glad people have here to go. The employees are very polite and helpful. I had an extraordinary experience here on Sunday (2/6/2022). Long story short, I needed a 40"x16" piece of glass for a frame. thought I could get it at Lowe's, couldn't. called this nearby Michael's, spoke to someone on the phone, found out they'd cut it on the spot and headed over. When I got to the counter, all I said was, "I called..." and Olga replied, "40 inch?!" Olga proceeded to advise me on glass selection, spoke with me about putting the frame back together (glass and metal don't play well sometimes); showed me EXACTLY how to handle the glass when I was ready to go, even told me about cleaning products when I asked. She helped me a couple of other things as well. Her coworkers were also happy and friendly and helpful to their own customers. On observing that, Olga told me that this particular Michael's has a LOT of long-term employees. UNHEARD OF, even before COVID, let alone now. But there you are. This store is obviously being run well, everyone seemed truly happy to be there doing their jobs. I live in Alexandria. Getting to this Michael's was happenstance. I was at church in McLean, went to the nearest Lowe's from there, struck out, went to the nearest Michael's from there. Cross my heart, even though there are 6 stores showing on the map EASILY more convenient to me, Olga is my girl, ride or die. I'm never going to another Michael's. Terrible store customer service experience. Let's start by saying that I prefer Michaels over other craft stores, always have. But today's experience may have changed that for life. Most of my friends and I are crafters (I will definitely be informing them of my experience). I placed an online order for store pickup within 2 hours to stay at a "social distance" from others and was at first impressed with Michaels offering this service. After about 4 hours around 11am, and no word from Michaels on my order update I called to store to check on the status of my order. I was told by the associate that she would prioritize my order and have them prepare it ASAP, she also stated that their goal was to have all orders done by No later than 4pm so my order should be ready by then. Based on this information I planned my day. When I venture out to the store at 4:58 I realize I haven't received any order updates. I call the store in the parking lot and and rudely addressed by an older male employee. When I tell him the information I was given earlier that day, he abruptly states that "2-3 hrs for an order is not during a Pandemic." I then asked if he could check on the status of my order since I was already there. He sounded annoyed and told me that he would place me on hold because two other customers were on the phone with the same issue...... then he hung up. Irritated at this point I get out the car to go to the line outside of the store to find out that the store is actually accepting customers with a limit and short wait outside. I still call back because I feel disrespected by the actions of the previous employee and I feel the manager should know. This was a wasted phone call because by the time he got to the phone I was almost at the door and the manager only said " I'm sorry you felt you were treated that way do you want a manager to meet you at the door?" At this point I'm over them and I tell him no, just cancel my order (which he didn't). (p.s. I let him know Michael's isn't an essential store for them to treat the customers the way they were, it's not like we need chicken or water, you know... things to live." I wait until I'm allowed inside to shop for my own items only to not be able to find them... I asked for help from an associate and she says that's not something they carry. Confused, I explained that this is something I had ordered online for same day pickup and showed her my order number.. nicely enough she asked a few fellow associates and they had no clue where the items were either. But at least she was nice enough to actually provide customer service and cancelled my order as she said she would. Needless to say I left Michaels extremely dissertation and feeling like I wasted a whole day on them pretty much.. luckily Hobby Lobby had everything I was looking for and to my surprise at a lower price.. shame on you Michaels. read more

This is a solid Michaels - not the best or worst. It's never crazy crowded and they are generally stocked on sale items earlier in the week. I wish they did better restocking their deals or merchandise in general. Service is generally great @ checkout, & store is never in total disarray. I'm getting into crafting and they have all sorts of crazy useful things @ not ridiculous prices. I get their circular & it encourages me to buy more. I think they have better prices but Hobby Lobby has a better selection & variety. read more

If you're going to be open during the pandemic you still need to have customer service. Tried to check out with their online advertised 20% off coupon and the cashier kept telling me jt was for online orders only. I kept reading the "valid in store" part over and over again but she refused. It wasn't until my husband called over the manager (that the cashier said was too busy to help us) that she magically was able to give us the discount. Horrible customer service. I don't shop here often maybe my 2nd time and definitely my last. If you are shopper of deals which I am and who doesn't. Their online pricing of items is much cheaper than their buy in store prices and no idea why they don't match online pricing which they likely don't from the interaction belowZ I order the items I want online so they can get the items for me, so rather than wait. I just grab the items and ask the front sales associate if I can just get them and show her my buy order which would save them from plucking the items. She goes not how it works and cannot do it. I can't believe a business is still in business that can't even work with customers. I don't know if associates are held to a straight line process or can't deviate from a process due to company guidelines if so which is pretty bad or simply mad I was able to fill my order quicker than an associate and I don't even work there lol..I created an account, ordered online while in store and filled my own order in a matter of 5 minutes or so (LTE connection is terrible in that shopping center area). I swore that interaction should have been a Tik Toc moment how fill in your blanks it was. "That is not how it works" comment or you can pay the sticker price listed vs online significantly less pricing. I would have made that moment into a Tik Toc video on that interaction. I will say one thing positive on Michaels their app is easy to quickly cancel an online order so they get a positive for how eaae of use of their app is for cancellations but not for what happened. While I will reserve my observation to how busy they were aside, a business that can't think outside the box in terms of taking care of the customer won't be in business long. I just cancelled my online order due to principle and if a company can't accommodate won't be in business long. We aren't talking an expensive transaction just more on the principle of accommodation. I refuse to give a company one penny for any lack of customer service considerations. While on a decorating binge I went to Nordstrom recently and found a candle that smelled ah-mazing, but it was 400$. While not all the merchandise was at this specific price point, it was all fairly pricey. A few hundred dollars later I couldn't help walking away feeling like I'd been had. A crafty friend of mine suggested I check out Michael's for home décor and man was she right! In the last month I have found lanterns, vases, candles, silk flowers, and other crafty knick knacks that have made my space look designer. Also Pinterest and Michaels are a match made in heaven, and it was easy to put together very pretty color schemes, arrangements, and I even built a chandelier. The staff here is hit or miss as when I have been looking for certain items they literally had no clue what I was talking about or where to find certain items, but I have managed to find them on my own after wandering around for a while. The lines have also been extremely slow on most of my visits. Its been fun getting in touch with my creative side, and I would encourage others to take a stroll through here and see what comes out of it. Just expect to stand in line a while. read more

After paying hundreds of dollars to frame a few certificates and diplomas I've gotten from the Army and my universities, I finally grew tired of it and started to not frame them. Mind you, this didn't mean the Army or my employer stopped sending me to school. It just mean the crap sat in a tube on the floor of my home office - often used to massage the arches in my feet after a long run. The came Karman and Michaels. Karman recommended the place after I asked her if she could do framing for me. But suggesting an alternative, she pointed toward the shop where I was able to find frames and matting for several 11 x 14 certificates I had laying about the house. Score! So now, instead of paying some jackass at the PX over $120 for each certificate to frame them, I can become a bit of a hobbyist and do it myself. I actually have several prints that need to be framed too so I'll be back to this place. The only reason it didn't get four stars is because the store is rather unorganized - sort of like a Big Lots of arts and crafts. But I'm willing to deal with it for frames that are 50% off. Oh, and the aisles are totally thin so if you're in a wheelchair, forget about it. read more

This place was the first stop when we needed any kind of art supplies. They have a ton of random stuff. I noticed that the stuff was organized in aisles but kind of haphazardly thrown on the shelves. As a crafts store, Michael's does not disappoint at all. They will carry almost anything you would want to find if doing crafts is your goal. They have things for weddings, painting, picture frames, stickers, just a whole bunch of things you would want if you were to get some last minute shopping in. Plus, you can get a few great deals every now and then if you pay attention to their sales. My only criticism, is the layout of the store. Unless you know exactly what you are looking for, AND where in the store to find it, you will be lost and slightly overwhelmed. When you walk into the store you will be greeted with an "explosion" of arts and crafts and in all honesty, there is no way you will find what you are looking for within a manageable time frame. So yes, go to Michael's for your crafting needs, but make sure you have an idea of what you want, and if you do then find the first employee you see and ask them for help otherwise you will be swimming, perhaps even drowning, in a sea of frames, paints, and crafts. If you are in no rush however, you will probably enjoy the stroll through the packed and sometimes overwhelming store that is Michaels. :) read more

I used to work at another location to support my crack habit. I need a 12 step program for arts & crafts, especially jewelry making and scrapbooking. I have to walk into the store with a list or I will spend 4 hours walking around in a daze, wanting everything. The employees are nice. The variety of items are wonderful. Poor customer service, the counter lady had attitude even though I greeted her happily. She didn't want to return my picture frames so I asked to speak to the manager. The store manager didn't want to return picture frames without the plastic wrap on them so I asked to speak to the district manager and he told me to call the 800 number because the district manager doesn't work weekends. Finally he tells the happy counter lady to return it and just walked away. She didn't say anything me, didnt make eye contact, just handed me my receipt and started helping the next customer. I don't expect to be waited on hand and foot but really, this is a bad economy, don't you think people should appreciate the fact that they even have jobs? We needed to urgently mount our daughter's prize winning drawing for an exhibit within 1 week. We had detailed mounting instructions from the organization that wanted to display it. Unfortunately this Michael's needs a major renovation and a customer service facelift, though it is conveniently located and tends to have a decent amount of inventory. Larger than some of the other Michael's stores in the area, it's promising from the outside with large sales displays right outside the main entrance. Upon walking in though, you get the sense that it hasn't been cleaned in a while. If you are patient, you can find what you want mostly from just wandering the aisles; the bargain aisles towards the front of the store are particularly great with tons of fun items for $1-$2 each. Customer service and checkout is really a pain with friendly but slow checkout and customer service that tries but isn't really able to help you find anything. read more

I take my 4 little sisters here (age 8-14) and we always go crazy with their jewelry making kits, tshirt makers, painting supplies, yarn, stone stepping kits etc...We always find something fun to do together and the staff here is always helpful and patient with us. Well organized store and plenty of parking out front. Sign up for their emails for coupons! I recently got an item box framed at Michael's in Vienna. Chris in the framing department did an outstanding job. He selected a mat, that was perfect and one I never would have chosen. So glad he did. The work was completed on time and looked great. In addition, the price was 30% of what I had been quoted elsewhere. Michael's did remedy the situation. I ended up going in again and they told me that another frame was coming in and it'd be ready by Christmas. They called on Christmas eve and said the new frame was damaged again so we could come in whenever and choose whichever frame we wanted (regardless of price). We picked another one but said if they still had another on order and it came in undamaged we wanted the one we had originally picked. A week later they called us to pick up our art. The final frame they ordered was not damaged and they upgraded our glass free of charge. After 6 weeks, we finally have our beautiful art (and nicely framed) hanging in our house. read more

Went in today with 2 coupons printed directly from the corporate website: 40% off on full-price item, 20% off entire purchase. Filled my cart with fall floral bunches, tulle, spools of ribbon, some mustache Duck Tape (fun!), 5 t-shirts, 2 packs of iron-on letters, & a few other misc impulse items. As I placed my items on the counter, I informed the cashier of my coupons. He said I could only use one. I said I'd like to do 2 transactions then. He stated, "No. You can use only ONE coupon, per person, per day. So pick the one that's the better deal." I asked, "Really? Are you sure? Because other Michaels have let me use more than one coupon per transaction - they just have to be different coupons. So, stores in California..." He interrupted me..."You are NOT in California. You're in Virginia." "I know. You didn't let me finish. From California, Oregon, Kansas, and Virginia Beach...in Virginia." He added, "I don't know what was going on in those stores. Someone obviously didn't care about their job." ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!! All I could say was, "Wow. Never mind. You just lost a customer." And I walked out - well first I gave my coupons away to TWO different people. ;) When I got home I called corporate to clarify their coupon policy. I was told I can absolutely use both coupons on one transaction. Ok...so I called the store and spoke with the manager, Mian. Calmly told him the story above...he asked me to "stop yelling and calm down." ?????!!!!!!!!!!!! He then told me the cashiers are not allowed to make exceptions to the coupon policy. I reminded him of my conversation with corporate that it's not an exception. He disagreed, but offered to hold my stuff (it was still in a cart at the register) until I could come in to see him and he would honor both coupons. He again reminded me it's an exception and if they did it all the time, then they would have to do it for everybody. I said, "No thanks. I won't be returning to your store. Thanks for your time." Some truly terrible customer service. I called to see if my custom frame was ready to be picked up. I spent 65 minutes on hold. That's not an exaggeration. It was actually 65-minutes. I had to call back multiple times, and I was left on hold each time. Then I called Michael's corporate customer care. I spoke with a man who called the store while I was still on the line. It took another 15 minutes before we even were able to speak with the framing department. Once we got a hold of the framing department, they said they couldn't find my custom frame. It took another five minutes before they found the order on the computer, but they couldn't physically find the frame. They spent another five minutes searching the department looking for it. After they found the frame, they said it was ready to be picked up. Of course, I never received an email or phone call from the store saying it was ready to be picked up. All told, I spent over an hour and a half on the phone for a simple yes or no question. I will happily pay extra at any other framing store than go back to Michael's. read more

One star for their classes. The first time I went the instructor didn't show up. I decided not to try again. I still tried after a few months and booked a class 5 weeks in advance. I got a call on the day before the class that the class is canceled as the instructor is busy, no valid reason. She said I could reschedule to when the instructor is free after a week. My experience is limited to fine art supplies, which is a small part of the store's business. The general quality is low, but the prices may not reflect this, so the buyer needs to be knowledgeable. However it is a good alternative to fine art supplies stores for some things. I have never been offered assistance by the staff in selecting anything. The cashiers are friendly, however, and accept returns without question. The store has a custom frame shop, but also a large selection of ready-made frames. The quality varies widely, but bargains can be found during sales if one knows what to look for. Care must also be taken because I have often found frames with scratches or other damage on the shelf. read more

Avoid Michaels in Maple Ave. Vienna I was there NOVEMER 18, 2013 at 1:45 pm. The male cahier and the male manager were both rude and unprofessional. I wanted to exchange the T-Shirt that I purchased 2 days earlier with 40% off coupon for a larger size. Upon arrival I left it with the male cashier and told him that I will get a larger size for the exchange and he accepted that. When I brought back the larger size, he voided the old one and told me now I have to purchase it at FULL price! I asked for the manager and he lied to manager and told that I asked for return not exchange . Then WHY I left the T- shirt with you and told you I will exchange with a larger size? To back up the cashier ,the rude manager told me this is their policy that if you buy an item on sale or with coupon and then you want to exchange for color or anything else it you have to pay Full price.
