This rating is for the framing department. I had an awkwardly-shaped poster in need of framing, but could not opt for a standard size. I was greeted by Klayton (sp?) at the counter - and he was very instrumental in assisting me with choosing a frame style to my liking, as well as one that would work with my budget. He also suggested affixing some rubber strips to the back (to repel against wall moisture) as the frame would be going in my bathroom, something I wouldn't have thought of myself - awesome! I'm in this store way too often. Although I like to support the local spot Art Essentials, Michaels actually has the 'essential' supplies, whereas Art Essentials has some higher quality rarities. Both are great but I always check Michael's first simply because it's convenient and I never buy anything retail with their coupons and sales. It's really easy to spend an hour browsing around, but you'll probably walk out with more than you intended to. read more

Terrible custom framing department. I've been waiting six weeks on a custom framing job from this store and Michaels continues to surprise me with an endless string of incompetencies. It took the standard two weeks for them to frame a print for me. However, when I got it home I found they had put the mounting hardware partly in the foam backing instead of the frame, so it ripped out when I tried to hang it. When I returned it, they tried to simply reattach the hardware to another part of the frame until I pointed out how another misplaced screw had split the wood. They promised to get a new frame in, but called me days later to announce it was ready for pick-up. They implied that the frame had been replaced, but when pressed, they admitted to simply filling in the wood with epoxy and again moving the screws without even replacing the foam backing. Again they promised to replace the frame, and promised to expedite the order. Two weeks later I called to inquire about the delay, and learned that they had ordered the wrong size frame, and would once again reorder. Another two weeks passed before they called again to tell me that they had managed to get the correct size this time but of the wrong frame. They encouraged me to just accept the wrong frame; I encouraged them to give back my money and my print. It has yet to be resolved. Don't waste your time and money with this framing shop. read more

I brought a drawing in to be framed, I chose the framing material and was very precise about how I wanted the image placed inside the matte. The first time I came back to pick up my work, they had placed the image at least 8 inches off othe computer image that they had made on my invoice. I asked them to do it again, came back and it was still not according to the plan we had made together. Framing businesses usually have people working there who have visual acuity, and understand visual cues and requests. I am still not happy with how the work looks inside the frame. I'm tired of going back there I'm going to tear it apart to try and fix it myself. You can be very specific with them and apparently they either don't care or don't understand. read more

I called ahead to confirm if they had what I needed. On our way there, my babies decided to take their nap. The service couldn't have been better. I stood behind my car as asked if someone can help get what I needed. The lady was so nice. She took my money, got the item, and brought back change. I was happy and appreciative for such outstanding service. read more

I went to see about having a very standard mat board cut: 3 openings of 5x7 on a single mat board. It took 25 minutes before anyone could help me. While there I saw them sell a woman a plexiglas covering for an oil painting!!! Really? What oil painting has glass? But it cost the poor woman dearly. Finally --- at last...these people are so slow and most of their time is taken up by convincing people they need what they might not need... I was told the mat board would cost $54.00 and take two weeks. I went around the corner to the Frame Up on Calle Real and paid $14.88 (tax included) and it took Allie 5 minutes to cut the mat board. I walked out with new mat board and change for a $15.00 bill. Michael's ???? Really ??? Go a block away and get good, honest service at Frame Up. read more

I'm surprised by all the bad Michaels reviews. I'm probably at Michaels once a week to wander through the aisles with my daughter. They have a wide selection of craft supplies, seasonal items, frames, and decor and if you wait a week or three everything ends up 40 or 50% off. Sign up for the app and get access to 40% off one item pretty much anytime. Aside from felt and occasional remnant displays, they don't carry fabric, which would be smart since SB lacks a fabric store. I admit I've never asked for help from a customer service rep but I probably know more about the store than some of them based on others' reviews. Negative stars for ethics. This is more for Michael's corporate office. I was shopping in Michaels/Aaron Brothers when an entire shelf of large frames fell on my leg and injured me, as the employees were not competent enough to stock the shelves properly. I was bleeding all over the store, as the frightened employee disappeared, leaving me to my own devices until I eventually found a cashier who offered me paper towels. Instead of Michael's corporate customer service calling me themselves, they had a company called Gallagher Basset call me to do legal damage control, taping the conversation and offering me a gift card, which never arrived after several promises. Unfortunately, I was a good customer and I won't shop at Michaels any more out of principal. They are unethical and sketchy. read more

Not the biggest Michael's but it has your basic arts and crafts needs. There definitely was a long line to checkout and although everything is pretty easy to find in the store, they look a little understaffed. It would be nice if there were more staff members walking around the store. read more

I've gone to this store before and it was great. Went in there to buy a stone pendant. The cashier threw it in the bag cracking it along with the other beads and says I could get another one. Instead I told her to void the sale and will not be coming back. I have worked in retail for years. Treat people and merchandise they are buying properly and they will come back!!!!' read more

I have to admit my experience with this store has not been great in the past, in fact I called a few years ago with a complaint because 2 employees were having a VERY inappropriate conversation across the store. However I went the other day with a project that my job dumped on me super last minute and I had no idea where to start. I was approached by an employee who asked if I needed help...I did...so she helped me for about 15 minutes find everything I needed for this project. She saved me and saved my task. I called and spoke to the manager there to offer my compliments and she said that they have restructured their store staff to have people on the floor that JUST do costumer assistance. Purchased do it your self invites from here and I was short a box and had to go back and get another. I asked for help to find it because I didn't see it on the shelfs this manager named ALEX was so helpful it was amazing. He went above and beyond to help us and gave us so much advice. I have never had that amount of great customer service ever walking into that store. He is a really great guy and helped me so much! Great deals, especially if you have store coupons! read more

My review is from my experience this week. I took my grandmother to get some crafts and yarn for her to do, but we were not satisfied. An employee with a framing uniform was smoking right outside the door. We parked in the handicap spot, but the woman had the smoke blowing to all the people walking in. We waiting 5 minute but she kept it up and afterwards just slip her device into her pocket and walked right in. Is Michaels ok with having those types of smokers in their building? There's a clear smoking area right by sprouts. And try leaving your cigarettes out in your car for heaven's sake. Very unprofessional to be taking those into the workplace but clearly this women is getting away with it. read more

Practically the only store in town for miscellaneous art supplies, very reliable inventory. But expect to wait 25 minutes at the checkout. I don't know if it's understaffed or just haven't found the right method for checkout but the wait is horrendous. read more

Went to the store today while I was waiting for my dental appointment. I have never felt so disrespected in my whole life. I'm never one to use the race card but in this case it was clear I was treated different because of my appearance. I was waiting in line to pay and the cashier was having a friendly conversation with the (Caucasian) lady before me and so I was next to pay. I went up there with a smile and said Hello and she said nothing didn't even look at me so I gave her another chance to return my nice gesture and when I received my receipt said thank you have a nice day and not a word in return or eye contact. Now I can usually change things around when I offer my closing gesture but not with this lady. I walked out of there feeling like I was not worthy of her presence. From the other reviews I can see this is not the friendliest place to shop so my suggestion to Michael's is hire friendly customer service people or just close your doors. I for one will not be shopping there anymore but I'm sure your store employee won't mind that. read more

The line to check out was so long, I put my items back and left. Why don't they have self checkouts? Every item they sell has a bar code, and with all the cost they spend on advertising to get you in the door, one would think they would catch on to self checkout kiosks. read more

I would love to give this place a good review but I just can't with the staff. I have been going to this location for years now to pick up all my art supplies because it is the only place in Goleta to do so but I wish I had an alternate option. The staff is never helpful or friendly. The last time I was there I asked "Do you work here?" and the lady replied with "Uhhh.. yeah" with an annoyed look on her face. I then asked what isle I could find what I was looking for and she said "I don't know try over there" and pointed. Other than that I have had several unpleasant interactions with staff. All of my peers seem to agree with me and a lady whom overheard the last interaction I had told me the service here always sucks and I should Yelp about it so here I am. read more

Great store. Sells a wide variety of ready made home decor and most of the equipment/supplies that you need to make something yourself. The coupons are incredible. I don't think I've ever bought anything full price. Love their washi tape, paper and stickers. The staff are friendly and courteous and do their best to help you find what you need. Just wish it was a bit bigger/carried more paper goods. read more

I love going in a getting the things I need to make things I want to, but I wish there wasn't a one line to wait. when you are paying for your items. I'm not super into crafts but my boyfriend and I stopped in to grab a journal for a Christmas present. It was fine we found one that was perfect... The only problem was the lady at the register. Crystal was her name. My boyfriend and I walked up and he said hello how are you? She didn't say anything back. She rang us up and didn't say anything except your total is ___. We gave her the money and kindly said thank you! And again... Nothing. Especially around the holidays should you be nice and somewhat cheerful to customers. It's understandable that you'd rather not be working a minimum wage job and dealing with customers and whatnot. Most people don't want to. But this girls customer service skills were lacking. Maybe smile next time or something. Pretend you don't hate your life! Otherwise it's uncomfortable and awkward. The actual store is fine but this is the second time I've had one of the employees act like they were completely miserable.. Not saying they are all this way! I've had some pretty killer cashiers there before! But there's also some that need some work! read more
