As I was sitting this morning knitting, I got to thinking about how far I've come. I've been…read moreknitting for about 25 years and crocheting since I was 11 years old--my sister-in-law taught me how to crochet. For years, I stuck with the basics--blankets, scarves, and simple patterns. I would look at all the beautiful sweaters, socks, and tops, read through the patterns, and then skip right over them if I saw stitches like intarsia, short rows, or knit one below. Then it hit me--if you don't jump in and try new techniques, you're never going to make those beautiful things. I realized I was limiting myself by being afraid of what I didn't know. So I decided to go for it. I signed up for the sweater and sock class at Hank's, learning two new things at the same time--yep, I was like, "let's do this!" The support there has been amazing. The staff and other knitters are so encouraging. Even when I made the same mistake ten times, no one ever got frustrated--they were always there to help. And guess what... I DID IT! I made a hoodie for my son, and he loved it. Seeing how happy he was made me so proud--and now I need to make one for my other son! And if I need help, I know they'll be there with open arms. I have grown so much in my knitting because of the encouragement from Hank's staff and the community there. I've also made so many knitting friends through their events--especially Fiber Night, which they hold the last Friday of every month. It's so much fun, along with their trunk shows and just spending time in the shop knitting and talking. It means so much to have a place where you can go, be yourself, and be surrounded by people who love the same craft you do. The support and welcoming atmosphere at my local yarn store truly make all the difference. So if you're like me--skipping over beautiful patterns because of one "dreaded" stitch you think you can't do--jump. Take that next step. YOU CAN DO IT! And if I happen to be in the store when you're there, I promise I'll be your biggest cheerleader

My first visit to Knit On! was a success! They have such a huge selection here, a whole room of…read moreyour natural fibers (like wool or cotton) and another room of acrylic and baby yarns. I was amazed at the selection given I am a beginner and have only shopped at Michael's Crafts for yarn. It's clear the yarns are high quality but they have some at every price point which is great. This place is so much better than the big box store where I've had a hard time finding a selection of wool yarn and things like safety eyes. Knit On! had everything I'd ever need for a project and a lot for inspiration too. There were some baby lovey kits and kits for scarves and other fun creations. There are cute pins and jewelry too! I liked how it was all well organized. The proprietor Nancy helped me and was very kind. She showed me where everything is and let me browse as I pleased. She also wound my yarn into a cake/ball for me and let me know they offer knitting lessons if I'd ever like to try! I enjoyed the visit and will definitely return for any special or nice project I want to make.

The yarn selection is phenomenal - every color and texture you can possibly imagine. I lost track of time wandering up and down the aisles, petting nearly every skein. I think I managed to buy some of the softest things ever invented. Some of the yarns were so cool and weird that I actually did a little excited dance! I love that the woman running the shop didn't even laugh at me when I ran up to the register, smiling and giddy, and said "WHAT CAN I MAKE WITH THIS!??!" Instead, she gave me a pattern and made sure I knew how to do all of the stitches, since I told her I was a new knitter. The cat, Tanner, is the fattest cat I have ever seen, but she is absolutely adorable. She sprawls out in the aisles, and if you rub her belly, she'll lay on her back with her legs stretched out and look like a big ole pillow. It's also a nice bonus that they'll wind your yarn for you if you buy any hanks. In my case, this ended up being a double-edged sword though, because I wandered around and found more things that I simply had to buy. Nice trick! I love shopping in small yarn stores like this because they also give you so many project ideas! Looking up on top of a shelf and seeing a beautiful shawl constructed with the yarn you're holding in your hand is awesome and gives you a much better idea of how the yarn actually looks in a project. I can't wait to come back to this place! If only they could pick it up and move it to Columbus!!

It was a great way to kick off the holiday season. I love that there was an outdoor craft show at…read moreWashington Park at the same time, so I got a "two-fer." I shopped there for the traditional arts and crafts gifts, then went into the side door of Music Hall (yes, at you're looking at it, the fair can only be accessed through the left-hand side door of music hall) for unique artist-made crafts. I didn't buy much -- just a silk-screened t-shirt and some tasty Jalapeno jelly -- it was the perusing itself, and talking directly to the artists that was the joy of the season. And I had some great, animated conversations with the artists themselves, who were helpful and excited to talk about their work. Yes, these are hand-made specialty items, so the price was high. But it is going directly to the artists, so it is worth it.

The booths were very high-end, offering great design and well-made products. Eli's BBQ was there, along with a bar, coffee stand, and gelto. It wasn't very crowded when we went, so take that for what it is. YMMV. Be prepared to spend some serious cash, also. I didn't buy many things, but the bill was high. I like supporting artists and designers, so I don't mind, but it certainly isn't a budget shopping experience.
