Having a serious mental health crisis and called Dr. Wu seeking a new patient appointment. I was having an anxiety attack while speaking to him, trying to explain I haven't been able to access my anxiety meds since moving to the area because I haven't been able to find a psychiatrist. The message when you call says appointments are 3-4 weeks out, so I was trying to ask if I could get a very short appointment if needed just so I could get an appointment as soon as possible, so I can get on medication before I have a breakdown. I apparently made a mistake in mentioning I was in need of medication (that's what psychiatrists do?) because he literally said "Yeeeeah, I can't help you. Sorry. Good luck." and hung up on me. Why do so many mental health professionals lack empathy? How can he call himself a doctor if he can't even tell when someone is having a crisis, particularly when they *verbalize it* to you? I know some prescription drugs get abused, but maybe use your professional skills to know the difference between drug seeking behavior and mental health medication seeking behavior. read more

Dr. Wu has helped me not by simply medicating and guessing. He guides by focusing on the root of the problem. His medical diagnosis feels more like a plan to help you succeed. When we talk we identify core challenges, obstacles and belief systems that have been holding us down our whole lives. He immediately brought out those things that we so often deny to admit and it was not easy at first. He was honest and concerned to make the best use of our time, which crossed my mind to take offense to. I didn't though because I had a feeling he was really after a solution and had my best interest in mind. So given that it can be tough to get over our own pride and ego, I want to tell you that it's worth giving this a shot. I give my personal recommendation to you the reader to see Dr. Wu. Most importantly, pay attention to your mental health. I've just moved To California. I needed to find a new psychiatrist. When I left his office, the first thought that came to my mind is "what a horrible man." I've no doubt that he is a knowledgeable person, however, his communication with me was not pleasant. He has a way of asking you a question, and you can tell in the question that he doesn't agree with what you are about to say . For instance. "You take this medicine for sleep evverrryyyy night? " The way he says the word every, is like he doesn't agree if you do. I have been on prescriptions for 10 years , monitored closely by my past psychiatrist. He disagreed with the dosage of one. Saying in all his years of experience he's never ever seen that and what i have been told about the medication is absolutely wrong. I told him I was diagnosed with a certain disorder and as we talked about it he asked how I was diagnosed. I told him the symptoms I had been experiencing . That I had spent an hour talking with my past psychiatrist and that I took a questionnaire. At the word questionnaire, he went on a tangent about how they are not accurate . He hates them . He said, "let me tell you why they are inaccurate." Then he did an analogy about someone that thinks they might have a brain tumor. "Do you get headaches?" Yes. "Do you have trouble sleeping?" Yes. "Are you sensitive to light?" Yes. Coming to the conclusion that anyone you ask who has had these symptoms has a brain tumor. We talked about my experience with my medications over the last year , and I told him that my past doctor has to adjust them from time to time if I am struggling . But other then that I'm stable . He said " well no your not . You just told me she has to adjust your medicine " To which I said ... " I mean stable in the sense that my whole world doesn't turn upside down emotionally " He said one of the medications that I am on doesn't fit with helping my diagnoses. He said " you know that right". He said it in a way that made me feel stupid. At one time in the visit I felt like crying. I had to be defensive about my current and past diagnosis , about the medications I was taking and my current state of wellbeing . I had a sense that we wouldn't get on based on our phone conversations. When I said I would have my doctor fax over my records , he said that he didn't need them . When I asked for his address he said you can find it on my website. Then he said it so fast I couldn't hear him clearly . I asked again, same thing. I felt like I was putting him out . He's in such a hurry to get off the phone. I wish I had listened to my gut instinct. Talking about my Mental health is difficult. Especially when finding a new doctor. It places me in a place of fear and vulnerability. I've struggled in the past with identifying my issues, telling family and close friends, and seeking professional help. I've felt ashamed and embarrassed that I struggle with mental illness. My experience with Dr. Wu was upsetting to me. I felt frustrated and discouraged when I left his office . I was very disappointed with the conversation I had via telephone with the Dr. He asked what medications I take. His demeanor totally changed when I mentioned one of my medications. He was behind the times on the latest research and very opinionated. Part of me doesn't understand how anyone can pick a mental health expert off of Yelp due to the personal nature of that relationship, but who am I to judge? As a psychiatrist he did an adequate job. I did feel a prescription may have been recommended to me based on a pharmaceutical rep's samples, but who am I to judge I'm not the expert at that. My review is about the business aspect of his work. I received a bill 15 months later for a missed appointment fee. I did miss the appointment, to my recollection, for an emergency and assumed he waived the missed appointment fee when I saw him after the missed appointment and paid my copay and there was no mention of the fee. I received the bill the following year though and his explanation was that there was a billing malfunction. He acknowledged that I had not received a bill prior, but that it was a malfunction and I still owed $75. I work in a healthcare establishment and I understand Doctors sometimes take care of their own billing in a small business environment, but if that's the case than they need to understand when they fail in successful accounting techniques it looks sloppy and isn't the best presentation of their profession. When I asked if I could pay over the phone he forwarded me to his website to pay (a non encrypted site that crashed when trying to pay on a mobile device) yet another drawback to the business practices of Dr. Wu. Again, this review is only for the business aspect of his work, but I prefer a practitioner that is efficient in all aspects of his business to instill confidence in his patients. read more

I've been under psychiatric care for more than two decades and it's been quite a whirlwind. Amidst all that I've gone through, Dr. Wu has been the most incredibly supportive doctor I've ever had in my life. His practice has grown beyond leaps and bounds and I can see why. When I visit him during my appointment, he's always prompt and welcoming. He has not only saved my life but has sustained what and who I am. I owe my healing, my continuance, my ability to wake up, my desire to fight for what is precious to me which is my life, and its existence to Dr. Wu's treatment plans and care. Words will never be able to convey how much I owe him and his time. I will admit that I'm an honest, authentic patient who has gone through a huge roster of medications and my case is greatly complex. But Dr. Wu never talks to me in a way that makes me feel crazy.
