My PCP referred me to get an irritated skin tag checked out. His practice had a 6 month wait for Derm- Skincare Physicians was a month. I saw Kathleen Brodt, FNP-BC (Katie). She was professional and friendly and made me feel comfortable. I asked for a full body skin cancer screening and had her examine a few spots/growths. She suggested snipping one skin tag and freezing the other area (cryotherapy). Quick and easy. She suggested I return annually for skin cancer screening. I made my appt for next year- it had been years since my last skin screening. It never seems to be included in my annual physical. Office was clean, well organized and well-staffed. Very efficient. They do bill insurance for medical Derm.

Rather disappointing to have driven 45 miles to their office only to be turned away. Prior to showing up for the appointment, I tried to call ahead to alert the front desk that traffic volume was terrible and I would be late. I was left on hold for more than 30 minutes (!) and was still on hold after arriving at the reception desk. Never got through to anyone. Do they not have phones at the reception desk? Does the office not have an email address that patients can use as an alternative means to communicate? During a prior visit, one receptionist had a rather hostile/ angry demeanor. Perhaps she was having a bad week, and to be fair most of the receptionists are pleasant. Nevertheless, patients can and do begin to feel they are simply a number at this office and the practice is more interested in $$$ over accommodating the patient.

This is the most unpleasant experience I've had with a doctor in some time. First, she was accusatory (why are you here?), almost scolding me for coming in for an annual checkup. She was cold, condescending, dismissive and SO palely unrealistic. When I copped to going to the beach on the weekends and getting some moderate sun exposure - with SPF 50, a sun hat and an umbrella, always, she asked (was it smugly?), "well......would you ever consider changing your lifestyle to stay out of the sun?" Oh yeah, I'm going to stop all my outdoor exercise and activities - biking, running, tennis, skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, kayaking, etc - and have overweight kids. That sounds like quite a lifestyle change. Why didn't I think of that sooner? Additionally, she seems to be that type that suggests you cut every dot off, to hell with the scars. Over the next 45 years, I consulted some of the top dermatological experts in the treatment of psoriasis and have used about every treatment, biological and topical, that has come out. Nothing really worked well for me. About a year ago, I saw (yet another) dermatologist, Dr. Jeffrey Sobell in Chestnut Hill near Boston. During the very first appointment, he said "you don't have psoriasis - you have eczema." I was floored. I've seen over a dozen dermatologists in my life, all of whom treated my condition as psoriasis. I am now being treated for eczema and am effectively cured! My skin problems have totally disappeared. I can't thank Dr. Sobell enough.

The lab came back as concerning, so they scheduled me to come back to remove more "margins" with Dr. Rohrer. Dr. Rohrer was scheduled to do the procedure, but after spending about 1 minute with me he handed me off to a woman who I assume was his intern, although she was not identified as such, so I am not sure. She did the entire procedure which turned out to involve more than a dozen stitches and an 8 inch scar! I was told they make it longer to allow it to have less of an obvious scar. Well, my scar is huge, crooked and ugly. (The original spot was less than .5cm). After the procedure, the healing of the scar looked concerning and hurt, but when I called I was not able to reach a doctor. I left a message with the clinical line and never received a call back. I called again 2 days later due to swelling, reddness and itch, but once again couldn't reach anyone. I asked for an email or direct voicemail, but aparently they don't have it, you can only leave a message with the receptionist. This is really not ok. When I finally went in to get the stitches out, Dr. Sobell and others seemed concerned about my lack of response and said they would look into it. It is now a few months later and I have a huge ugly scar on my leg instead of a tiny freckle. I am glad I had it removed, but am not pleased with my experience. I have heard that other dermatology offices have plastic surgeons do procedures such as the one I had to minimize scarring, or the doctor who the appointment was with should at least be in the room for more than 60 seconds. I would not go back and am considering switching my regular dermatologist to a different practice even though I like him.
