I see that most of these reviews are from one or more years ago, so I will update you with my experience. I reached out to Dr Joseph because I was having some serious on-going issues with my back over a month that evolved into my neck. I appreciated that he was willing to see me the same day when others I reached out to could not. I'm an athlete, know my body and am no rookie to Chiropractic adjustments when I know my body is "off." I made that clear to him up front and that I just needed a thorough adjustment. However, when I arrived I was given a full new patient in-take (7 pages) and then a consultation-assessment of my issues (15 minutes). He suggested an X-ray was needed. I reiterated that I just needed a full body adjustment. Finally, he proceeded to do one small adjustment to my lower spine and hip. And when I asked about adjusting my neck he said he would not do it without an x-ray (with an added cost) and a follow-up appointment. I was very frustrated that I didn't really feel any better ( as I had in all positive chiropractic experiences prior). But the most egregious of it was that he said I owed him $125 for the consultation-evaluation, which on his website says it's "free" -and another $85 for the minor "adjustment". This was clearly excessive, but I just wanted to move on... All this said, I don't want to undermine other folk's positive experiences; this was just mine. But I do know that his adjustment did nothing to help me and a few days later I made the hour drive to my previous chiropractor on the peninsula and he adjusted the hell out of me as requested, charged me $80 and I'm right as rain! read more

I had a long history of chiropractic care (over 30 years ) when I moved to San Rafael. I found Dr Joseph while I was in pain and wanted immediate relief and he was available to see me quickly. I was skeptical of the long form he had me fill out and his insistence that he take an Xray before he could treat me. However, after taking the Xray, he spent considerable time going over it with me and explaining what he would recommend for treatment. He adjusted me very lightly the first day, which was completely appropriate to insure he could assess how my body would respond. At my second appointment he adjusted me so thoroughly that it was one of the best adjustments I have ever had.I have been seeing him ever since. Even though I came to him wanting immediate relief, I'm so glad I waited and followed his protocol. Dr. Joseph is a true healer! I first met him when I couldn't get up off the floor due to low back pain. He was able to get me back up and literally running! I play a lot of soccer and enjoy trail running. I find that getting adjusted helps me to continue enjoying these kinds of activities. I have been seeing Dr. Joseph for the past 2.5 months, after having terrible pain in one of my legs which severely limited my mobility. Although I saw my doctor and a physical therapist, I wasn't getting any relief. I'm typically a very active person and felt completely disheartened that I wasn't able to do much activity at all. In addition to getting adjustments, Dr. Joseph took on the role of a coach - giving me the encouragement that I needed. Although I had already done a review regarding my care by Dr. Joseph, after reading a particular review by Lizzie H, I felt compelled to respond to that review because it is so inaccurate and flawed, actually somewhat slanderous. As I previously mentioned, I have been utilizing chiropractic for many, many years as both treatments for acute pain and also for body maintenance. That said, I have seen many different chiropractors over the years. I can tell you that whenever there is acute trauma, X-rays most definitely should be taken because any number of serious issues can be present, such as fracture. It would be remiss to NOT take pictures as a safety precaution, both for the patient and the practitioner in order to rule out any serious condition. And, if this woman understood anything about chiropractic, she would know that she might get relief through 1 adjustment, but it really takes several continuous adjustments to ensure that the adjustment holds. On a more personal note, after reading Lizzie's review and her "observations ", I asked Dr. Joseph about the approximately 6 photos of patients on his wall. He explained to me that these people where initially non ambulatory or had very limited mobility. Each one worked diligently and the results were worth honoring. Hence the photos. The photos had nothing to do with him and everything to do with their hard work and success. I also asked Dr. Joseph about x-rating without protections. He told me he did use lead covering with the exception on one side view, which he had no way of using protection. I would like to stress the when reviewing anyone or any business, one should keep the review focused on service and keep one's personal opinions based on whatever to themselves. I just wanted to say that after I left Dr. Michael Josephs office after my first adjustment I walked out front to sit on the grass while I waited for my daughter to come pick me up who was borrowing my car. I needed to be on a zoom call for my Nonprofit Children of the Rainforest anyway so it was a nice place to sit and do that ... (and it WAS restful under the blue sky so I was following Dr. Josephs orders too rest after our session at least somewhat too) I sat cross legged in the grass. I've been teaching Waldorf Kindergarten for 21 years. It's hurt to sit crosslegged for 11 of those years. Generally it hurts after only a few seconds - it just hurts my hips in a way that increases as the moments tick by. It's normally been excruciating and I simply have to move and sit differently. I sat through the entire zoom cross legged!   I didn't even realize till the zoom was over. Truly amazed!   Truly wonderful! Truly grateful I have returned about 6 times now with my daughter in tow. After those initial visits I went to the Ecuadorian Amazon where my non profit is learning from the Indigenous people there how to better serve the tribes of Bolivia. I was worried how I was going to do on the trip as the Amazon jungle can be grueling--- but I was pretty much the first up and the last to sleep every day. On the last day of the journey I took a personal day and climbed Cotopaxi Volcano to 16,000 feet. I am 194 pounds and out of shape... but I did it. Something is truly different. I think I can truly attribute the change to having an aligned spine. I haven't had a migraine since I started coming either. That alone would have been enough for a great review. I scheduled an appt with Dr. Joseph for acute neck pain after injuring myself during yoga. I was grateful he fit me in the same day. Before adjusting me, he did an extremely comprehensive assessment and proceeded to tell me he could solve every problem I'd ever had through his hands (PMS, insomnia, you name it). He predicated this on whether or not I, the patient, and "his hands" had a "true connection" or not. I started getting creeped out and concerned about inflated claims (he has posters all over the walls about how he cured a patient's cancer, among other "success" stories that wreaked of pseudoscientific claims). I probably should have listened to my gut, but I was in so much pain and couldn't move my neck, so I thought "just get through this for the adjustment". Well, before he could adjust me, he insisted I needed X-rays to "see if I could be adjusted". Against my better judgment, I agreed to this (he didn't ask me if I consented and didn't tell me it was optional... he also didn't tell me about the $100 up charge). He proceeded to take full front and side x-rays-- I had to literally beg him for a lead covering for my reproductive organs (when I asked "don't I need some lead covering for my organs?" he acted surprised and said "I don't know yet", meanwhile he was covered in head to toe including goggles in protective gear). He took the X-rays and (shockingly) then said "yes- you can be adjusted" (I later looked up whether x-rays are indicated for chiropractic care and read overwhelmingly that it is NOT considered best practice!). I finally got adjusted (it did help!!), but he immediately wanted to book me for multiple other appointments. I scheduled a follow up just to get out of there, but when I called to cancel it later he tried really hard to pressure me into keeping it ("you really need to be seen again"). He has since left me a VM and just recently sent me another text message "you really need to see your x-rays". I have blocked him from my phone. I believe that this man thinks he's a healer. And I'm sure he has helped people. However, no good practitioner should make such inflated claims, pressure patients into unnecessary and risky procedures or act like a used car salesman to try to drum up business. I worry he prays on people's pain and convinces them they need ongoing treatment. The only reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is that when I finally got adjusted, it helped. However, I will never go back and want to warn others off-- find a chiropractor who follows ethical practice guidelines! I have been seeing Michael Joseph for over 5 years. Why do I keep coming back? Because he has helped correct so much misalignment in my body and reduced so much body pain. I only wish I had known Michael when I was younger instead of trying to correct these ingrained problems starting in my 60's! But with that said, I am grateful that he has helped me stop the progression of the deterioration in my spine and has corrected the pain that was in my hips and lower back. I have also been suffering for a very long time with severe repetitive stress in my left thumb. When I was seeing a well-respected osteopath, she finally x-rayed it at my insistence, and the bone inside was turned around (to what degree I am not sure). Her recommendation was not to eat sugar. When I heard that I left and soon after found the Pain Relief Clinic of Marin. When Dr. Joseph took x-rays of my skeletal system, I was shocked to learn that I had a tremendous number of subluxations going on in my spine. What! I was seeing an osteopath for 10+ years. Wasn't she separating my vertebrae and helping keep subluxations from happening? I was converted, right then and there, from seeing an osteopath to working exclusively with a chiropractor. With that said, I know that osteopaths offer great value to the medical community and the clients they serve. Perhaps I was not seeing a good osteopath. I will never know the answer to that, but I do know that I have received great results from seeing Dr. Joseph. As much as we wish it, healing does not happen overnight. I didn't get into this situation overnight and I wasn't going to get out of it overnight. But with consistent care, the pain in my thumb (not to mention my body) has almost been completely healed and I believe that with Dr. Joseph's help, I have prevented Carpel Tunnel surgery. Also, as we age, flexibility is so important and moving our bodies is so important. I view chiropractic care as part of my preventative regiment along with regular exercise and eating right. I highly recommend Dr. Joseph & the Pain Relief Clinic of Marin. He has this uncanny ability to "feel" what the bones need and then execute the correct adjustments. The fastest spinal adjustment I have ever been to (like drive through) , felt stressed out to be rushed through my session, which pretty much last 10 minutes for $75, not having enough time to relax on the table and take a deep breath, which really helps in successful adjusting..another customers is already waiting and I have to get out..and this happened several times..I had very good chiropractors in the past, who unfortunately moved from the area, they worked on my muscles, posture, energy flow, allergy muscle testing testing and much more.. but this office does only quick cracking, sometimes too harsh and too quick, not healing at all, have to look elsewhere.. read more

These are written by patients who have suffered from various conditions, but they all embody hope and gratitude for receiving healing; all patients have triumphed difficult periods in their life concerning their physical health. I mention this because when I first walked into Doctor Joseph's office, I, too, wanted healing for myself. I have been seeing Dr. Joseph since Summer of 2014. Before we met I had migraines almost every single day for months. They were getting worse and I had tried everything since I was 18 to get rid of them. I had also gone to many chiropractors as well. I went to Medical Doctors everywhere. I have been seeing Dr. Joseph for a few years and he is AMAZING! I saw him yesterday because I has pain in my knee for about a week and it hurt to walk and go up and down stairs. I met Dr. Joseph at the San Anselmo street festival. He was offering free consultations. I sent my daughter to see him for a free consultation. During the initial free visit, he charged me $180 for x-rays. Hardly free. My daughter called me after the office visit in tears. During the next consultation, I made sure to go with her. I politely questioned him about the x-rays, and were they really necessary. Really, taking x-rays of a young girl's pelvis area should be minimized, I should think. He told us he could not treat my daughter because I had the wrong attitude...so concerned about costs as opposed to her well being. How insulting! I love my daughter. He threw us out of the office. When I asked for a copy of the x-rays which I paid for, he tried to charge me an additional $35 to burn them to a disk. Dr. Joseph is a predator of people in pain. Save yourself. read more

I don't even know where to begin. I have been seeing Dr. Joseph for a while now and have to say that he is a truly wonderful person and so is his staff. I'm so very glad I found Dr. Joseph at the "Pain Relief Clinic of Marin". I have been going to him for many years. Even my co-workers have noticed the change in me. Since my retirement, I've also been asked to bring my little dog Bella. After unsuccessfully navigating his ridiculous and confusing website, I decided to call the supposed 24 hr emergency phone number which was splashed in neon colors all over the site. I must have let it ring for five minutes, I could hear it being transferred to one line after another without so much as an answering machine. Remember this is supposed to be a 24 hr. emergency number and it was only 4pm on a Tuesday! I l finally lost my patience and hung up. The next day, for whatever reason, I decided to give Dr. Michael Joseph and http://marinhealth.net another shot. Ring ring, ring ring... Receptionist: "Jello?"
