Michael is THE GOAT! My hair comes out perfect every time, also he's wonderful to talk to about anything and everything!

This is a revision to a one-star review that I deleted, as I was asked to re-evaluate, and since I did eventually get a nice response back. Since I am not a client, I can see where it is unfair of me to cause the business to lose stars in Yelp, as I understand the ramifications and dislike people that don't take this into consideration. So I will give a 5 star review as I wish the business no harm, but based on the caveat if anyone reads this, that I think their auto response messaging system is bad when there is no timely response, and especially when there is virtually no chance of getting appointments there in any kind of timely fashion. Previous * One-Star REVIEW Great salon, maybe.  Great communication, NO. Called because of their reviews, only to hear a message that says we are 2 to 3 months out on the next reservation, and we don't answer the phones and prefer texts.  Then THEY text me with an auto response "Thanks for calling MDHD. Can I help you with a text instead?" So I answered, to maybe book an appointment for the future.  No response. Messaged again to see if anyone listening.  No response. Busy is good. But if you tell people they have to use your preferred method of communication, reach out with an auto response, and then you ignore them??? What's the point?  Just a waste of people's time.  Seems they are too successful to even care. read more

Devereux is phenomenal! She's my go to for hair and lashes. Super healing hands and vibes. Great with crown massage, cuts and blow dry. Great advice on hair care and helps me find the right products with natural ingredients. Leaves my hair feeling shiny, smooth and freshhh. Naturally talented and highly recommend! read more

Dev gives an AMAZING crown massage with her cuts! She takes her time and she released tension spots in my head that I didn't know were there. After the crown massage I felt high, in a good way and more present. :) She also blow dries your hair after the shampoo and cuts it dry, which I appreciate since she could make sure to cut away all the loose split ends. I highly recommend Dev! read more

So I just want to say that I found the one, the one hair stylist that can truly cultivate the Vision each & every single time. DEV is a master at what she does & makes you feel comfortable right when you come into the door. She has graced me with the perfect color & has helped me to feel like myself. One of my favorite parts of a session, is her Crown massage. She puts you into a state that assists into coming back into self love. She hits all the right pressure points for overall health too! It brings me such joy when I get to come be my authentic self. Been looking for along time for the right stylist, she's it. The salon is so cute & such good energy in there. Michael at MDHD is the only "Hair Doctor" I trust. I have been going to him for more than 10 years. Each time I have gotten a different cut and color combination (I am easily bored), and it's perfect every time. Really. I have short hair (anywhere from pixie to below chin-length) so the details matter - you can't hide mistakes in a short cut. Michael always knows how to give me a new style that is edgy yet professional so I never feel like the 40-something I am. I get asked where I get my hair done often by other women with short hair. It's hard to find someone who understands the details that make a great short women's style in this city of long, layered, highlighted hair. Plus his color and cuts grow out so well, you never have a bad hair day. The salon itself is small (3 stations plus a separate room for esthetician services). The decor is warm and modern, the music is great, and you will be offered a beverage while you wait. Don't let the Rancho Bernardo location fool you - you will get a great style from someone who really cares about each customer. I have been coming to this salon for over 10 years. They are always friendly, kind and professional. I've had acne problems for years. Recently, it hit a whole new level of cystic acne. Jen recommended products that worked magic. I had tried everything before and these products actually work and they are reasonably priced! I've been using them as she directed (she personalizes what I need over time) and my face has transformed. My acne has disappeared, and so have my acne scars. Jen does an absolutely marvelous facial! It is so relaxing and she is so kind and friendly. She has over 20 years of experience as an esthetician and is absolutely fantastic. It's such a treat and my face absolutely glows afterwards. I've also gotten waxing done by Jen. She is so good at making sure she gets all of the hair and she makes the process as painless as possible. I love not having to shave and waxing lasts for weeks! I've also been getting my hair cut here for the past 10 years. Mike is just unbelievable. I've gotten my hair cut a few other generic haircut salons (like Great Clips) and they always shear off 6 inches of my beautiful, long hair when I tell them to cut two inches. Mike always listens to what I want and he makes my hair look absolutely amazing and so healthy. I am a long time client/friend of Michael David Hair Salon. I would describe the salon as a boutque atmosphere thar provides very personal service. I get my color done by Dev every three weeks. Dev is an artist with color and the products that are used keep my hair feeling silky and healthy. I love the way Dev and Mike style my hair. Mike cuts my hair. I trust him so completely that sometimes my instructions are very vague, but I always leave the salon feeling good about my hair. Of course, if I tell him exactly what I want, he's able to make it happen. Mike, Jen and Dev have created an atmosphere that is relaxing and always uplifting. Jen keeps the salon stocked with a yummy beverage bar and little treats. Michael David Hair Salon has been my salon for 25+ years and I have never even considered going anywhere else. Ive been coming here since I was 12, and I'm about to turn 24. I will never go anywhere else. I ALWAYS get compliments on my hair and get asked about where I go. Mike and Trisha have taken my hair from long with layers, to a-line, to pixie. Dev has taken me from brown, to red, to blonde, to dirty blonde, back to a red/purple. Sometimes I'm the worst because I do get bored with my hair and will drastically change things out of no where (like when I have dark red hair and tell Dev I want to be blonde), but they always make it happen while keeping my hair healthy and making me happy all at the same time. read more

Michael can cut hair. Not the best but very good. I was a bit worried when I was offered something to drink and a separate person washed my hair. I thought, "Oh no, one of these types of salons..." You know, the type that tries to go for high end clients and charges you an arm and an leg for a simple cut. I liked Michael and had a good conversation with him. The guy who shampooed my hair was fun to talk with too. The cut I got was good but not fantastic. I didn't walk out looking like a model or feeling like a princess or anything. It was just very plain but well executed. (I so miss my previous hairdresser who made me feel Beautiful when I walked out of there and I got so many compliments everytime I got my haircut there. She moved though.) For example, the back of my head looked very plain and straight. In contrast my previous hairdresser I had for years would layer it in such a way it worked with my waves and it looked so soft and pretty with layered waves instead of just plain layers lying flat and straight. My husband didn't even notice I had a haircut. Usually he notices when it was that previous hairdresser. To be honest, except for it looking neater, it didn't do much for my face. Yet, it was technically a good cut so that's why I'm rating it a 4. It almost got 3 stars though because of the price. He charged me $60 for the cut. And with tip we're talking $70 bucks and up. If I had lots of disposable income, I'd come back if in a pinch because he's near me and he's reliable. But $60 cuts is too rich for me. I just want a bare bones place which cuts hair and cuts it well. Don't need the small talk and the extra hands washing my hair if it's going to cost me 40% more. Please, if you have the money, please don't be dissuaded by my review. Give him a try. He may just be what you're looking for. I'm just trying to give a balanced review so that those who depend on these reviews aren't given too much hype. read more

I just went to Jennifer last week to get my eyebrows waxed, and I am so glad I did! I have been looking for someone good for a while now and so I thought I would check on Yelp, and came across Michael David Hair Design. I read great things about Jennifer, all of which were true. Every other place I tried, they just wax them quickly and send me out the door. Jennifer did a full consultation, asking exactly what I wanted. She was so kind and I could tell she really cared. I have been trying to get my eyebrows to grow in better from years of plucking and not knowing what I was doing, and she helped set up a plan to get my eyebrows exactly how I want them to be. I have been going to Kristina for about 10 years, I've followed her to several places. Michael David is definately the best. The receptionist always knows me when I come in and offers me a drink. I've been going since they opened so all the stylists know me and chit-chat. My mom and husband go here also. Well, I have been going to this salon for over a year now and I totally loved Tanaira as a stylist. However, they just ruined any chance they had of me going back again. I made an appt 7 weeks ago in preparation for my vacation that starts tomorrow. Earlier this week I made the mistake of calling to see if there was a chance I could go in early tomorrow morning instead. That wasn't going to work out so I VERY CLEARLY stated "ok, well then I guess I will keep the Friday appt." Little did I realize this is like rocket science to the girl that took my call. So of course when I showed up today for the appt, the moron that had taken my call had apparently removed me from the book and they have since scheduled someone else in my spot. So here I am 7 weeks of planning, color badly in need of a touch up and my idea of having straight hair on the trip shot. This is all occuring after busting my you know what so I could get out of work on time for this 4:15 appt. So, no apologies, no explanations as to why this happened, just "sorry, she is already booked". So they can kiss me goodbye as a customer, which is a shame since as I mentioned, Tanaira is great. I will be searching Yelp again now for a new stylist. Hopefully the next will have a receptionist with better listening skills. read more

I've been getting waxed by Jennifer for over 10 years, and as any woman knows, it can be an uncomfortable process! I consider Jen like family now, and she truly has a magical touch. When I was living in San Diego, I was looking for a great facial and asked my sister in law for a recommendation. She's 30, but her skin looks as though she's 20. She recommended Jennifer, and I'm so glad she did. Jennifer was so caring and personal, you felt like you were visiting a friend and getting pampered. With each visit, my skin improved. She recommends products at different price points, but is never pushy about buying them. (I do, however, think you should use EVERYTHING she recommends). This is one of the best salons that I have ever been to. The service was great from the moment I entered. The staff was very attentive making sure that i was comfortable and having a great experience. I was refered to the salon from a co-worker who sees mike, after she gets her haircut and colored, she brags for a week about how good she looks. I went to Tanaira, who was awesome. you come in with an idea and she personalizes it to fit you perfectly. The color that she did looks amazing even after it has grown out, i don't look like i have a landing strip down the center of my head. She is also alot of fun to talk to. This place is awesome. My friend went to Michael for years and she always looked amazing, so I thought I would try it. Honestly, it was the best experience. The hair cut was done really well and the color was beautiful as well. I got so many compliments and I always recommend this place. When Michael was not available, I got my hair done by Tricia and she did a great job as well. I was super happy. The cost is pretty normal. I have been using both Mike and Jenn for 15+ years for my hair and skin. People ask what I do to keep my skin looking so great and my secret is Jenn's facials and great products. She makes me feel like a queen when I am there! It is so relaxing to have her work on me.
