The friendliest art gallery…read more Virginia Miller opened her first gallery in 1974 in Coconut Grove with at first mostly local art but soon expanded to Cuban, Latin American and even some Chinese artist. She moved her gallery to Coral Gables in the early 80's and was a major factor in starting the first monthly gallery nights in greater Miami. That's right folks, Wynwood didn't start shyt. Virginia is extremely approachable as is her husband and they usually have the artist in house to answer any and all questions. The latest artist that was showing here was Leslie Lew. She shared with the Yibbies a story behind a painting she did in the early 80's while she lived above a botanica on Broadway. Let me repeat that. A botanica I'm the middle of Manhattan on Broadway. Times have changed. If you do happen to come by on a First Friday know that they will have some kind if white wine, never red. Red spills where you least expect it. Cernuda Arte feels less like a gallery and more like a quiet refuge for the mind. Walking through…read morethe space, you're surrounded by powerful modern and Latin American works, but the piece that always pulls me in is the Meditation tropical jungle picture installation. There's something about standing in front of it that instantly slows everything down. The sun poring through the leaves. The simplicity, the balance, the silence it creates, it almost feels like the artwork is inviting you to pause for a moment. I found myself just staring at it, letting the calm and tranquility take over. The gallery itself is beautifully curated, with a clean and thoughtful layout that lets each piece breathe. Just the tip toe noise on the wooden floor makes me chill every time I walk through it. It's the kind of place where you don't rush; you wander, reflect, and connect with the art in your own way. It is free to access and all the personnel is nice and attentive. If you're in Coral Gables and looking for a moment of peace mixed with inspiring contemporary art, Cernuda Arte is definitely worth stepping into.

The only downside to our visit was the abrupt behavior of the rude staff -- at exactly 3:51 PM, they came in and announced that the museum was closed, turning off the lights without any prior warning. Official closing time is 4:00 PM, so a more courteous heads-up would have been appreciated.
