I have been here a few times the service is hit or miss. We had one of the best servers ever, but all other times it was... meh. The food is fresh, but seems to lack some of the flavors of traditional Thai cuisine, possibly to satisfy the normal American palate. There is not a great ambiance, there is no privacy between the booths and tables so when it is busy, it is hard to have a conversation at your table. Quintessential American diner food cooked with care & skill, and served by warm, friendly people. Lots of menu choices, very reasonably priced. I chose the patty melt which was made perfectly with plenty of fried onions. The cole slaw reminded me of my great aunt's- fresh, crisp, just a little sweet and creamy. A couple of my friends got the sausage & biscuit special which looked amazing. Service was fast , especially considering we were a rather large group. This is about halfway between the Twin Cities and Duluth, a great place to stop if you are travelling on I 35. It would also be a top choice for kids because of all the menu options and helpful staff. read more

Great food, great service and fun, local atmosphere at low prices. A really enjoyable lunch. They also serve breakfast all day. The ground round (basically a giant ground beef patty with grilled onions) was a retro feast. The chicken was crispy and delicious. Drive a few minutes past the chain restaurants and eat at family-owned local restaurants like Nicoll's. So much better. Planning my next meal. read more

Run of the mill three Just another greasy spoon Pancakes were quite good Felt a little out of place walking into this joint in business attire, but at least it wasn't like the jukebox turned off and everyone turned and stared. Of the customers, I think I was the only one in the place without either gray hair, camouflage, or a mesh hat. Ain't nothing wrong with being a greasy spoon, but if you have been to one then you have been to pretty much all of them. The eggs and the sausage here were like the eggs and sausage that I have had at hundreds of breakfast diners in my life. The pancakes did stand out somewhat, but not quite enough to bring it up to a four for me. They were light and fluffy and huge, taking up pretty much the entire plate with the eggs and the sausage hanging precariously on the edge. For ten bucks total with tip, I left stuffed and was in and out in about twenty minutes. Chiggity check it out if you are in Pine City and in need of breakfast. Can't imagine you could do much better for a breakfast place anywhere within 25 miles. read more

Decided I'd take my mom and step dad out for breakfast Saturday morning. They chose Nicoll's because Rock Creek Cafe was a bit too busy and we weren't in the mood to wait. There is no private lot, it's street parking on main street in PC or along one of the side streets with a short walk. You choose your destiny with that. This is your prototypical small town cafe where the servers are all extremely nice, engaging and the regulars in town will stop in each and every weekend to talk about what's going on. Lets start with the good... prices. Their weekend specials for breakfast are damn good. $8 for steak, eggs, hash and toast is a great deal. $6 for BnG isn't bad either. The best part, their pancakes. By now, you should know that I'm a pancake junky and will murder kittens for a good short stack. These cakes area easily some of the best regular buttermilk cakes in the state. Very light, very fluffy, almost like a cake batter type of flavor, with a hint of natural butter salt to the batter. They soak up maple syrup like a champ and are amazing. Steak had a great flavor, but was pretty fatty for a sirloin. Which kind of sucked. Hashbrowns were over cooked and pretty flavorless. Eggs were solid. Biscuits and gravy weren't bad tasting, by accounts. But, were pretty cold so we had them sent back to be nuked. I'm guessing the extra friendly service saw our chow sit in the window too long or the cooks aren't sure how to properly time out cooking a meal? Either way, they weren't bad when they came back warm. **NOTE** CASH ONLY!!!! They have an ATM inside that will of course charge you to use. So, plan ahead to bring some cash. Overall, not bad, in parts, great in parts, and bad in parts. If you're in the area and want pancakes, do it! read more

Out for a ride to Duluth yesterday, we stopped here for breakfast. SO glad we did! Everything was freshly made down to the homemade cinnamon raisin toast! Steak and eggs were cooked perfect and so tender, omelettes had freshly cut everything, and the sausage gravy was perfect! We stopped on the way home from Hinkley for breakfast. I had the chicken fried steak with eggs and hash browns. My husband had the steak and eggs special and a short stack of pancakes. The pancakes were so good. The were melt in your mouth good. They texture was perfect. The chicken fried steak was very fresh and the gravy had a lot of flavor. The eggs tasted like they were fresh from a farm and my husbands steak was cooked to perfection with great seasoning. Will be going back. read more

Great place to take the family, or a group. The staff is friendly, the service is quick and the food is great. I prefer this place to Scotties. I'm in a hurry and don't want an ATM charge on top of a bill and 20% tip, so I go to Scotties, because they accept credit cards. This place is cash and check only. My grandparents lived in Pine City for nearly 60 years, and I've been visiting for over 30. Whenever we are in town, we get breakfast here at least one morning. Recently we've had delicious fluffy pancakes, hot buttered toast, and eggs that are always cooked perfectly. Service is quick, portions are generous, and the food is consistently good. Nicoll's only accepts cash (maybe local checks, but the locals already know Nicoll's), however there is an ATM. The prices are cheap, the weekday special 2 eggs, 2 toast, 2 sausage, and 2 bacon strips is $4.44. If you're headed north on 35, it's a quick stop off the highway. Get yourself some good home cooked food and eavesdrop on some compelling conversation about the local weather. read more

"Sorry, no flavored syrups," the waitress told the mom as she dashed by to fill someone's coffee cup. And thank goodness for that. What they do, they do real well. Only know their breakfast. Grandma at the desk, dad in the kitchen and the daughter(s?) wait tables. It's 100 percent old fashioned. Over easy egg is a work of art (from a former truck stop frycook). Tons of families. Well, not tons-- it's a small place. Try to sit in the gingerbread booths with the chipped aqua paint. Bacon so thick it's like jerky. Don't get the coffee unless you want constant refills from swarming waitresses. Minnesota style coffee. Of course. Don't miss the pancakes. They taste great without syrup and even better with -- and the pancake is completely on purpose: the cook knew what he wanted to make and he made it exactly the way he likes it. And that's a good thing with a pancake. I know Minnesota has a rap for being friendly and all, but this is like being invited into someone's kitchen. Very warm. And it looks like Pine City could use the trade. Well worth a stop. read more

Quaint little corner cafe. Wooden booths on a raised level made me think of the soda shop in the movie Grease. Homestyle food. They serve breakfast all day. A couple of us had breakfast. Great pancakes and thick cut bacon. Eggs and hash browns cooked to order. The others had the pattymelt and turkey bacon melt. Both were very good. Passing through and stopped here last weekend. Small town friendly and one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long time. Kristie the waitress recommended one thing after another and she and the cook/owner didn't disappoint on any of them. Steak & eggs - steak was tender! Eggs fresh! Bacon was good - similar to Nueske's. Need a giant homemade cinnamon roll? They got that too - for $1.95! Farmer's omelet was huge and delicious. Just a note, no credit/debit cards. best homemade soup ever! Two different days- one was vegetable beef the other chicken rice- both delicious. And very reasonable. My husband had fish and chips and I had a huge bowl of soup, we both had good coffee. the bill was $10 and some cents total. read more
