Great Food and Service but Payment and Billing System Needs an Update. (3.5 Stars ) Mi Viejo is one of the only good restaurants in the Carrollton area aside from the fast food restaurants in the area, Whenever I'm in the Carrollton area I eat here at least once. So far on my visits, the food has been great and the service has been pretty good too. The only issue I face is when I have to get an itemized receipt for business expenses. On my last visit, I asked for an itemized receipt right when I sat down and the server came over. The server assured me that he could do it as I have had this issue on all of my previous visits. Once I ate my delicious perfectly made meal, I again asked for an itemized receipt. The server disappeared for over ten minutes and I had to go to the counter. At the counter they gave me a tiny receipt to show I paid and tipped but no itemized receipt. Again the person at the counter disappeared for another ten minutes as I guess they thought I would just go away. Finally, a manager came out and redid my whole bill and gave me a printed receipt with separate charges for what I ordered but no item description. I guess this is the best that they can do. I do recommend they modernize their POS as since there are several industries in the area, I can't be the only person who has to submit receipts for business expenses. Pretty much everything here is tasty. It's a good place to get Mexican food but they also have good steaks and burgers. The guacamole Texano is some of the best guacamole I've had. The updates to the decor have made the restaurant feel more spacious. The staff are always very friendly and very quick to make sure you have everything you need. read more

Food and service was average but place to me was dirty . Huge trash can in middle of bar and other areas . When paying check at desk , manager or owner on phone processed check without acknowledging me at all. I own a few restaurants and that type of impersonal behavior is ridiculous. After a long afternoon hike at General Butler state park, it was time to reward ourselves with margaritas and as much chips and salsa as we could stuff in our face. Mi Viejo immediately caught our eye from the road - It looks like a cute little cabin lodge! The inside of the restaurant is just as nice. Much nicer than your typical Mexican joint! The food was pretty good. I went for the taco lunch special and appreciated being able to get something that wasn't an insane portion size. Visiting from Florida. We had 4 adults 3 teens and 4 small children. We were sat fast outside and food came out quickly. Salsa and queso was amazing, the mi viejo dip spectacular (must get)! We stopped here on our way to an event further down the road. We were so glad we stopped. The chips and salsa were very good. My frozen raspberry margarita was perfectly frozen and stayed frozen until the end. Hubby's beer was ice cold. Both our lunches were delicious and a nice portion. These people are so nice! They seated our group of 22! All together! Even though we said we could separate. It was a Friday night. Shocked that they would be willing but they were. And the food was delicious. We went back on another day on a Saturday afternoon and they had a buffet. How very cool to have a Mexican buffet. We all enjoyed it. Worth every penny. read more

Carrollton was a stop on a road trip and the hotel clerk said it was the best food around. The crowded parking lot was a good sign. We were seated quickly, the service was excellent. I wasn't really in the mood for Mexican food, but the menu had good variety and was and better than I expected. I got the feeling this place is popular with locals and I can see why. 2 1/2 stars if I could! 2 couples at 4:30! Waiter was nice and seemed to understand my allergy, but I still got it in my 'specal' guacamole! My hubs order (Texas Special has two plates) sadly it was "tasteless" and my order was one of the plates he got by accident and we had no clue. He added hot sauce so they had to redo my order! My friend's husband NEVER got his order (also a Texas Special ) so my husband shared his order with him! Very upsetting to our friends because they are there last year and loved it...they pushed us to try it! 3 of us were nearly done with our food when they informed us that our friend's order was forgotten and it would be another 20 minutes! Cancel! Our bill came with NO understanding what each charge was! Even the $3.20 line item showed up as $320. ! Never again!! read more

Hidden gem alert! I usually work in Carrollton every year for about a week, and I eat here at least once every time I'm here. All the food is super good! They give you a generous cup of salsa with chips. I usually like to keep it simple with chicken tacos, but when I come here I always get the Pollo Santa Fe! The vegetables with the cheese over the chicken with a side of rice and beans is the best. My boyfriend always gets his shrimp fajitas that are always good. Portions are large, and service is fast and friendly. Definitely worth stopping for a lunch or dinner. read more

It is so hard to find a Mexican buffet at a Mexican restaurant. So I've to take advantage of this opportunity. Thanks! From 11 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., daily lunch buffet (with water) of $9.99 without tax. Great price. I loved the crispy taco bowl! The chicken was popular. I also enjoyed the chicken fajita and steak quesadilla. Rice and guac were good. Unfortunately, you only have pork in your tamales. We've been her twice before but this time I ordered singles item as off the menu and not a meal. I got a Tamale and chimichanga. I love tamales and I've eaten 100s from different places and living in Texas o have friends that know how much I love them and will make them homemade for me. This was by far the winner of the worst tamale I've ever had. I cut into it and it was all masa and so I cut it down the middle and the whole tamale was masa no meat or any filling what so ever when I asked the waiter if that's what it it was he said it was pork filled and there was some on the bottom. While masa is good it's not that good to eat a whole 5 inch block of it. The chimichanga was also another odd one it was more of a soft flour taco filled with meat and not fried. read more

Drove a mile or so off the interstate to try to avoid fast food. This place was a very pleasant surprise. Friendly staff and legit Mexican food. Clean restrooms. We were there at close and the staff was working really hard to clean the restaurant and make it spotless. read more

SERVICE: The service was fast and the wait staff was very friendly. Warm, crunchy tortilla chips along with slightly spicy salsa was brought to our table immediately. ENTREE: My entree (chorizo-pollo) was delicious even though the chicken was a little drier than I preferred. I just added a little salsa to it and it was fine afterward. We opted for basic dishes like chicken cheesy rice and quesadillas. The menu was extensive, and while we didn't try the buffet, it looked appetizing. Despite passing a chain Mexican restaurant on our way, I'm glad we chose this place. It's spacious and more inviting than the smaller chain nearby. Prices are slightly higher than usual, but the quality makes it worth it. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're in the area. read more

Bad waiter, we never say anything bad about anybody. We were very disappointed with our waiter. He took our order, which he got wrong. We never saw him again after that. Someone else brought our food out. And we never got refills on our tea. I had to go to the front and get our check and pay for it and get my own to go box. If im being 100% honest this is just a fancy version of El Nopal (The original Mex restaurant in our town). The food is decent and the staff has always been kind to me. Ill admit I opt for El Nopal if im in the mood for tacos and margaritas, not to say that this restaurant isn't good, maybe its the nostalgia. ..... The food is always good, if a bit over-salted, as is common with Mexican food. But the service is excellent, and the atmosphere good. I've never had a bad experience there. IMO, it's the best restaurant in Carrollton, though to be fair, I have never tried El Nopal. I've eaten at ENs in Louisville and they don't "cut the burrito", so to speak. They have a very good lunch buffet also. read more

Only reason I'm not giving five is you sometimes have to ask if you can get something, especially at the bar, where they do not put a bartender, just whatever waiter happens to be in there making their own customer's drinks. Paul and I stopped for a late lunch at Mi Viejo after a hike at General Butler. Despite the parking lot being fairly full, we were able to snag a booth. Service was fast and friendly, and the atmosphere was casual and lively. The women's restroom was incredibly clean. Score! The food was solid. Paul ordered two beef tacos and a tamale. I ordered the fajitas Monterey. My only gripe was having to cut up my own chicken because it was served as a whole breast. In my opinion, salads and fajitas should not require a knife. Paul said his tacos and tamale were "good, but nothing special." My fajitas were better than average. Absolutely wonderful in every way! I feel like I found a treasure! It has been there about five years. We were just driving through and decided to stop. The outside looks like something from Texas on a ranch. The inside is dimly lit and beautifully decorated. There are a few animal heads on the wall. Outside there's a huge wrap around porch to hang out on. They may have outdoor seating when the weather is nice. The staff were beautiful, smiling and accommodating. They have a buffet which was fresh and fully stocked with whatever you may need. They even had wings on the bar. The drink cups and salsa dishes are huge. You're less likely to have to ask for refills. The bar is in a separate room where there are really large tables to accommodate large groups. The buffet is also in that room. The bar isn't very big, but that a good thing. Small compact containers keep the food fresh by adding food as needed so that it won't get hard and crusty. Just a tip... go see the bathrooms even if you don't have to use the facilities. read more
