Attended a funeral in Madison and decided to get something to eat before driving back home to Jeffersonville. We elected to try Diego's after checking the Yelp reviews . . . we should have driven on home. We were seated promptly - and our server was very nice, but he was handling the front of the house on his own - which meant service after being seated was poor at best. Once our food arrived - our server disappeared - never checked that everything was okay - never offered refill on drinks - nothing. I ordered a burrito with chicken and it literally had three small pieces of chicken, a boat load of onions and peppers - plus enough of the liquid it was cooked in to fill the plate! Needless to say, the flour tortilla was gummy from the liquid and inedible. The others in our group said their food was "just okay". Once someone came out from the back we got our check and left. My best advice - if you see Diego's - keep driving. read more

For "northern" Mexican food I was pleasantly surprised. Being from Texas we set the bar pretty high. In this case, our needs were met with Texas sized margaritas and chips n' salsa. The salsa wasn't very spicy but the flavor was decent. I had the Chori Pollo, grilled chicken topped w/chorizo and cheese. It came with tortillas to sop up the cheesy goodness. I recommend it. Server was nice. Service was quick. However the food was very very subpar. I consider this a one and done restaurant. Eat there once and never again. Beans were bland, rice was bland, salsa for chips was very bland, chips were stale and too thick. Carnitas were horrendous. Way to salty and drowned in some kind of red sauce. I left 90% of the carnitas on the plate. All in all for the $40 I spent I could have made a more authentic Mexican meal for 10 people at home. We won't be back. read more

5 of us sat down for dinner last night, and I ordered a margarita with silver Tequila, a minute later the owner Rosa stopped by with a sample of their house margarita and explained that their's were made with silver. It was delicious and we ordered 5 of them (you can order reg, large, or night, huge!) The rest of the meal was just as good as the margs. All of the food was extremely fresh (lots of fajitas, quesadillas, taco salads, etc.) The flavors were authentic and varied by each dish. Nice place for a small Mexican meal. Not the normal portions but nobody has the same portions anymore. Had a temporary surcharge on the bill to help pay for employee health insurance. Not sure if they still do or not. Personally, I would rather they just increase their prices than add a surcharge. Meal plus surcharge plus tip...a bit much. read more

The building has a colorful assorted history of other restaurants but I have a feeling this one will stick. Great location, big spaces for big groups, food was great. This was a great find for us. We walked around the Madison Chataqua festival dor awhile. Waited too long for service at a riverside restaurant so we left to find someplace for a late lunch and found Diego's. My wife enjoys sopes while my favorite is choizo and eggs. The salsa they serve at Diego's is very good. I was looking at the chicken selections when my wife said the Chilaquiles were chorizo and eggs ovet corn chips. I thoroughly enjoyed them. They came with beans and rice. WOW! Now I will want Chilaquiles instead of just plain choizo and eggs. read more

I love Mexican food, so when you find a great spot for i in small town America you consider yourself lucky! Last night I had some really great service, really great chips and salsa, really great veggie fajitas, and an ice cold Corona! All the food was top notch and the service was great as well! Paul and I almost drove away from Diego's based on the restaurant's exterior appearance, but I'm glad the gods of chance convinced us to give it a try. We literally flipped a coin, and heads meant we had to stay. We found the interior to be in stark contrast to the exterior. In fact, it looks as though it was recently renovated. Everything looked new, the booth was comfortable, and the bathrooms were clean (muy importante). Our server brought out tortilla chips, which were pleasantly warm, and salsa, right away. The salsa was far too mild and I could taste chile powder in it, which I thought was odd. Use fresh chiles, please. It also needed some lime juice. Paul asked for hot sauce, and our server brought out a house made sauce. We added some of it to the salsa and it definitely improved it. Paul ordered a Modelo and a lunch combo platter that included a burrito, a taco, rice, and beans. You can't beat a $3.00 beer, and Paul enjoyed his food selections. I ordered the cheese enchiladas, which came with rice and beans. The cheese was perfectly melted, and the enchilada sauce, which was an interesting shade of orange, was good. We were in town for one night and came across this great restaurant. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The menu had great options from traditional fare to kid friendly dishes. I ordered the carne asada street tacos which had no grisly pieces, fresh cilantro and limes. The ointo beans that came with it were good and just the right amount. I also got Mexican street corn which was simply delicious! My Husband had a variety dish and was pleased with the portions, quality and flavor. Visiting my family and we went out to Diego's for some fabulous Mexican food. Man this was such a good choice. I got fajitas with shrimp, chicken, steak and chorizo fajitas. It was so good! We have visited this place a few times before reviewing. After trying several dishes, our overall review is YUMMY! I highly recommend this place. I enjoy the Steak Chimichanga with the addictive cheese sauce. The steak has great flavor and two of them is filling. The chips served are hot and delicious and they make sure you don't run out. Came to town for a weekend getaway and always need to find a great Mexican place - and I found that here! The service was great and the food was delicious. My boyfriend and I came on a day where you get a free small queso and it was delicious. It had a lovely kick to it and managed to not coagulate too much throughout our dinner so it was still good throughout the entire dinner. My boyfriend got the Lupita's special (3 steak tacos) and I loved that they had everything separated out so that you can build the taco the way that you like. They also individually wrapped the steak tacos in aluminum so it stayed warm while you were working your way through dinner. I wasn't super hungry so I got the grilled chicken quesadilla from the appetizer menu and it was delicious. Definitely extra cheesy and it had a wonderful melt on it. The grilled chicken had a great flavor to it and it didn't fall apart while cutting it, which I greatly appreciate. I also got a side of rice and it was divine. I am quite picky with my Mexican rice and this one was very fluffy with some interesting textures incorporated from the veggies and had a great overall flavor. Yes the outward appearance makes the place look a little shady, but there were a decent amount of cars in the parking lot on a week night so we gave it a try. Chips were hot, salsa was average, but the food was excellent. There were 3 in our party and all of us gave the food high marks. The biggest negative for me and everyone else in our group, was the service. The waitresses were extremely slow in seating us (we were the only ones waiting), taking our order, checking to see if we needed anything like more chips or drink refills... The waitresses seemed to be uninterested as they spent a lot of time on their cell phones and talking amongst each other. I have no idea how you have more then 1-2 stars. First time here and we won't be back. Park and there's trash all over parking lot... we had tacos , didn't get the order right. Then go to taste , zero flavor , steak was very chewy and zero flavor ... and on top of that prices are a little high.
