So, I went to Mi Playita again this evening. Being a newer restaurant, they are playing with the menu a bit, testing out some new things and changing others, so do not be surprised if my review is out of date when you visit! A bit different cuisine this time. I would say the style changed to more of a fresh mex this evening, but it does seem the chef has a lot of leeway in how he is cooking. My husband described it as more of a resort style than a restaurant style, as it had previously been.
The salsa was different-- darker this time and chunkier, the beans were different--a more charro-style, less refried bean-like. The overall presentation was a bit fancier-- beans in a bowl and formed rice instead of a mixable situation and a larger platter plate.
I ordered the carnitas taco meal. They were street style and very, very good, so I highly recommend those. Carnita pork was very well prepared and probably my favorite piece of the meal tonight! The chimichanga my spouse ordered had shredded beef that was well-seasoned and the tortilla outside was not overly hard, as some places do. They served it with a more fresh cream than a traditional sour cream. Chips were good and the same as last time. The beer was cold It was pointed out to me, being their apparent resident iced-tea snob, that they changed the iced tea (Manual was our server again and remembered us). I will say, the tea is a lighter blend, rather than the Texas-style iced tea they had before. I wanted to point this out because there was another customer who may have been in there based on my previous review and was not happy with the tea. It is what I would describe as more of a Louisiana tea, less tannins, more citrus-y and lighter than previously. Still very good and I was still very happy when I left. And the customer service Manual provided was attentive and very helpful. I will still be back and open to whatever changes they have made and update my review accordingly.
Of note: If you have other preferences, do not hesitate to ask. I have found them very accommodating and since they are a newer place and still trying to find their way, they want to please their customers. Also, if you are used to eating or seeking yellow Taco Bell style cheese, please ask if they have the orange shredded cheddar cheese. read more
