From reading all the reviews, it seems that this location has good and bad days. The place is always busy but I think it is just a nice loud environment that families and groups have a nice time at. The drinks we have ordered are always good, but the food is just alright. The service is always good too, but this cannot be the best Iowa has to offer. read more

My friend and I were on our way to Baker's Square next door as I love their wonderful wait staff and attentiveness to the customer's needs plus very nice food (Yes, unusual for Baker's Square in later years!). My friend said Mi Mexico had delicious Mexicana food, so I reluctantly agreed to go there instead. I was not impressed that they had not bothered to replace the raggedy sign over the front door. The interior looked "Ok," but we decided to eat outside on the patio instead (because of the health challenges that we are faced with nowadays). Our waiter was not warm nor interested in his job, unlike the waitress that we observed waiting on the table next to us. She was explaining the menu to her customers and answering their questions. Our waiter just threw one photocopied menu on the table and asked us if we were ready to order and never told us what the daily specials were or anything relevant to know....the meal only went downhill from there. I wanted to eat a vegetarian meal, so I asked him if he had veggie enchiladas as there were no veggie dishes listed. He did not seem to understand my question and told me finally that they only had bean or cheese. I decided that it was a waste of time to ask anything else so I took the two bean enchilada dish and my friend took a one beef enchilada dish. My food came on a hot plate, that was a good thing! Our waiter told us to be careful; the plate was hot! Helpful! From the first bite, is where the disappointment began to settle in. The beans were warm, not hot, and they seem like the pale refried beans you find in a can, not thick/soupy variety, with very little taste. The cheese, well, I will leave that topic alone. The Spanish rice was weak tasting, and definitely like it came from a premade box; I could be wrong, but I doubt it. My friend's beef enchilada had soupy beef; in tiny granules like dog food instead of crumbled hamburger meat. She was not happy with the taste or the consistency of her meal. She apologized to me and said next time we would go to Baker's Square next door. I ended up treating my friend to a meal that was not even as good a Taco John or even Taco Bell. I had to spend over $9 on each of our meals; the bill came to $21+. I do not usually write food reviews, so that tells you how disappointed I was. We did not mention it to the manager because we don't plan to go back, and our waiter told us that this was how their food always is. End of comment! read more

Great food, even better service and by far the best margaritas. My wife had the fajitas which I could not resist trying one. I had the super burrito and that was really good. Everything tasted so fresh and was prepared to perfection. Can't wait to visit again. read more

This used to be our main spot for lunch when I worked in Clive, Mi Mexico is a great spot lunch or dinner that is fast and delicious. You always get seated right away and you get chips, salsa and free bean dip (I always have to get the queso!) Plus a glass of water! I always order the same meal, two enchiladas with rice and beans. The difference at Mi Mexico is you get a side of "coleslaw" which sometimes is cold but most of the time warm from the food, which I think is interesting but I guess it may be a Mexican tradition. Prices are mid range, a lunch size and a drink will set you back about ten bucks, while dinner is more like $15. The flavors are great though, everything tastes like it's made to order with quality ingredients, which is hard to find nowadays! Defiantly recommend! read more

Tough call with this place. Margaritas are legit, some of the best I have ever had. That said food was okay, somewhat on the blander side but my experience has been that is closer to authentic Mexican than the over season and sauced stuff you get at the national chains. I have yet to find truly great Mexican in this city. They offer a bean dip with the standard chips and salsa. My advice, grabs some tacos and margs and sit out on the patio. read more

Mi Mexico is my favorite Mexican restaurant on planet Earth. Their chicken molé is as good as it gets, and I very much recommend giving it a try. You get free bean dip and a secret mild salsa that is very different than the house salsa that they bring out. It is busy at peak times as expected but worth the wait. read more

Hard to give it three full stars. It's my first time here- don't know if it is a chain or not. It has that feel- a typical Mexican restaurant chain. It caters to someone's idea of what gringo's want in a Mexican restaurant. Overloud colors, overloud piped in stereotypical music. The real disappointment, the food. Bland. I got the picadillo enchilada plate. I've had good picadillo before- with complex flavors. This was no where close. Bland for American taste buds. Many who are used to this. If that's what you want you'll likely enjoy it. If you are looking for more authentic Mexican fare, you might want to keep looking. read more

Perfect pit stop! Wonderful find. We were driving through Des Moines and wanted to meet up quick with a friend. This was off the interstate and more appealing than the chains around like Applebee's. This was the perfect choice for fast and delicious. Fast and attentive service, yummy chips and salsa, and fast delivery! I ordered a chile relleno and wasn't disappointed. The restaurant interior was nice, lots of space, and pretty busy! We probably won't have the chance to stop again, but you never know. Would definitely recommend. read more

The best mexican food in West Des Moines, hands down. You get beans (for free) in addition to chips and salsa. Their "signature" margarita shaker is strong and delicious, although pricey. The food is flavorful, well-presented, and just a bit above what you might expect from your average mexican restaurant. Service is always top-notch from the moment you walk in. Type of cuisine: Mexican food Type of music: None. Decorations: Decorated with carvings on the seats and walls, and paper lanterns hanging everywhere. Lighting: Bright and welcoming. A lot of Mexican artwork, the chairs were magnificently carved and beautifully colored. The festivity of the Mexican culture was shown in this restaurant. They had a very wide variety of foods to choose from. They had a wide range of alcoholic beverages for adults and a variety of non-alcoholic sodas, teas, and other beverages. They had a variety of options for food, even foods for people that don't enjoy Mexican food. The service was prompt, friendly, and over-all superb. read more

Most overrated Mexican restaurant in this area/ It's just off I-80/35, so it probably gets a lot of folks who are hungry and tired enough to eat the menu and the napkins. OMG! I must have come to this place on the wrong night. I had been driving for about six hours, on my way back to Kansas from Wisconsin and wanted a good meal before enduring the rest of my drive home. Yelpers had some decent reviews for the place so we gave it a shot. This particular night there was a big party occupying one side of the restaurant, which is completely fine, except for the fact that these party-goers were TRASHED. Their voices were a little too elevated for my liking; not one statement could be completed without a WHOOOOO!!!!!!! following it. Disturbing. There might have been a fight at one point also, who knows. Margaritas must have been extra special for this party. Anyway, the food was 'meh', service was 'meh'. Quite frankly, the menu didn't have many appetizing descriptions so it was very difficult for me to decide on an entree. Couldn't find a chimichanga so I settled for a pork burrito. By the time we got our meal, I had filled up on chips, salsa and queso, which isn't really that bad seeing as the burrito was pretty gross. I have never had worst experience than here. Not only was the service slow but we ordered a pitcher of margaritas and seriously just got juice. Asked for more tequila and had the audacity to charge an additional 6.95 for a shot even though the pitcher was already $28. Also the food had zero flavor and such a small portion my 5 year old kid wouldn't have been full. In the end, not even a thank you from the server! Oh, they weren't even busy. Avoid this place like the plague. To start, we were in Des Moines for the day for the farmers market and wanted to stop somewhere on the way back to Ames. After reading a few review here on Yelp, we decided to give it a shot. I can't begin to describe how disgusting the food was. I don't recall the name of what chicken entree I ordered, but it was essentially flavorless chicken, onion, mushroom, green pepper on top of a bed of rice. Well, it tasted like sour cream and thats it.. The chips were your typical Midwest Mexican trash and the salsa was also very watery and poorly executed. Highly disappointed as I am very fond of good Mexican food. I don't understand how there are so many good reviews. Maybe they're from the owners/friends/employees. I hate Carlos O'Kellys but would eat it over Mi Mexico, ANY DAY! read more

Came in for a solo lunch and decided a bar setting would be great to indulge in a margarita over a tamale. I was right. I looked around and noticed all these "mini margaritas" around me....and I knew I wanted more than a mini...like normal size....but hey...all these ladies are doing it, so I say, "I'll have a margarita". No specification of size...no specified flavor. Just a margarita. Lets see what the bartnder does....then Bam! I got it! In front of me magic began. Quickly, messily and magically limes and lemons were cut and squeezed into a large shaker, then muddled with actuall limes as a VERY generous portion of tequila made the mix. He lightly iced the shaker, poured me a mini margarita out of it and gave me both the full mini glass and remainder of the shaker. So sure...the glass is small, but the overall portion is majestic, and tastey! read more

Always fast and good service and great food. It's definitely one of my favorite restaurants. I've heard AMAZING things about their Margarita's (though Tequila and I are not friends). Food is reasonably priced and oh, so.... so good. My favorite dish is Mexican Style Chicken which is basically a mexican style stew with moist chicken, tomatoes, peppers and onion. Mi Mexico...you have failed me for the final time. I've gave you many many chances. My first dining experiences were always great. Loved the food, perfect shaken margaritas, friendly servers. But, for the last few times....not good. The food was extremely salty, covered in mountains of cheese to where I couldn't find my food on the plate, poor, inattentive servers. I'm disappointed as my family used to enjoy stopping in. Unfortunately, after my last visit I spent the rest of the night feeling sick and regretting stopping in.
