We have always wanted to try this place and after finally doing so we are sorry we waited this long! The gist: exceptional service, warm and flavorful food; energetic ambiance with colors and music, full bar. Extras to know: on the last day of January the restaurant was comfortably warm. I am always cold and typically eat with my coat on but could enjoy tonight's meal without it. Upon arrival we were seated and immediately brought large glasses of water: I love not having to ask AND having a large glass and chips and salsa. The. Hips were typical Mexican restaurant chips; the salsa suited my preference with a bit of sweetness and cilantro. Our server was friendly and 'just right' attentive, allowing us to enjoy our meal while making sure we had drinks. The food came quickly in chilled glasses: the only thing keeping this meal from perfect is actually not so bad- the chipped glasses melted a bit and left a small glass rim puddle- I will ask for a coaster next time. And there WILL be a next time. The menu is extensive and creative with a nod to Iowa in some of the dishes (example: Iowa burrito) Prices totally reasonable for the amount of food. I enjoyed 1/3 of the pollo chorro (grilled chicken breast with chorizo) topped with melted cheese. Delicious combination. Sides of rice, refried beans and lettuce, cheese, tomatoes and sour cream in a mini taco shell. The dish came with a warm flour tortilla. Hubby had the Burrito Texano with steak, chicken and shrimp stuffed in a huge tortilla smothered in green sauce and cheese: we stayed for him to finish- he could not NOT eat it all it was so good. Stopped in on a Saturday evening. We had a table top of 7 and we were able to get a seat right away. We had to wait for a last couple people before we put in our food order. The atmosphere was laid back and nice. It was not that busy yet so the waitress was paying attention to us. When we put in our order my husband ordered the Chori Pollo. He had never had it before. Chicken and chorizo together in the same meal. It was like he discovered sliced bread he was so excited to try it. He really enjoyed it. It came with flour tortillas and he thought it was really good. I ordered the Polo Loco which was chicken and cheese sauce with rice, guacamole and lettuce. The flavor and everything was good. I think I was a little bummed out how flat they beat the chicken down. It does make it cook fast and even, but seemed to be a little dry. Someone at the table ordered fried ice cream and loved every second of it. Overall everyone at the table was happy. No one left hungry. The waitress got busy and we had to leave so we had to get up and go pay without waiting for a ticket, but other than that the over all experience was good. The service was so incredibly prompt and kind - the speed at which our food arrived was wonderful. I saw their birria sign outside and actually whipped around to come and try it out. Was NOT disappointed. I don't know if this is a permanent item or temporary but I recommend everyone and their mother to try it out. Stopped with friends for dinner after an afternoon of watching football, so this was a great change of pace! Seated right away and got in our drink orders. They came quickly, as did the food. While waiting, the chips and salsa were good - the salsa had a good flavor, and we got some queso, which was also pretty good. Chips and drinks were refilled nicely as we dined. We have been going to amigo since it opened and we actually really enjoyed. It used to be a friendly and service oriented place but the experience we just had was one of the worst! Our food orders came out completely cold and incorrect. Our server didn't care or even check on us another sever noticed our orders were wrong. The moment this restaurant gets a little busy the whole place crashes to the ground. Their sangria also tasted like cleaning product. Very disappointed especially because of how much we used to love it. Not to mention when they tried to bring out the corrected food they also got that wrong. Surprisingly great food for a location that gets so overlooked. Food is excellent! We tried Amigos on a Sunday night because the other Mexican restaurants in the area that we usually go to we're closed and we loved it! Went a second time and it was just as good. We love the queso and guacamole with the chips and queso. And I order the amigo burrito which I love. On our second visit I forgot to order cheese sauce to be on it and they fixed it right away. Great quick service. Amigos is now my preferred Mexican restaurant over the other ones in the area that have been around for a long time. read more
