I stopped in here for dinner as I was staying in Des Moines for work and boy that was a good decision. This place has the very best margaritas around. Go for the shaker marg. Mi Mexico has been in Clive for a looong time now. I hadn't been there in years, since there are much more convenient options for me where I live. My favorite dining companion though, had never been. We visited for lunch. My dining companion settled on the Camarones a la Diabla, and I went with the lunch portion of chicken fajitas. You of course also get the customary chips and salsa. We always ask for the spicier salsa. Typically this is a roasted Salsa Rojo at most Mexican restaurants. In the case of MI Mexico, it was a roasted Salsa Verde...and boy was it good! Normally Verdes are a bit milder in heat, but not this one. It had a delightful level of heat. We ended up buying a to go portion of it because it was just that good! Back to the entrees. The fajitas were great despite being the smaller lunch portion, it was still a pretty sizable plate of food. The flavor was good, the tortillas were hot and fresh. My favorite dining companion loved her shrimp dish, and took all the leftovers from both our entrees home. We also both got margaritas. I opted for the classic: lime margarita on the rocks. My dining companion opted for a blended peach margarita. Both were very good. I had to get a refill because it just went so well with the meal. Overall I was very happy with Mi Mexico, as was my dining companion. I will have to stop in again soon. I need to try their carnitas, which is another favorite Mexican dish of mine. Greeted at the door and seated at bar immediately. Bartender made me a margarita rapido. It was tasty. I asked for spicy salsa and they brought me some green salsa that was spicy but not too hot. I ordered cheese dip and I think it had mushrooms in it, it was good but I wouldn't drive out of the way for it. The combo fajitas were seasoned well and were good. I would pass on the shrimp and stick with beef and chicken. Corn tortillas tasted fresh and they were hot as... Decent Mexican food but nothing to write home about. Best margaritas in the Des Moines metro area. We stopped in for an early Cinco De Mayo lunch with our kids. We are on the patio. The decorations were festive. We sat near a blooming tree with the breeze lightly moving the flowers and the ribbons on the patio. Mi Mexico did not disappoint. We were promptly served chips and salsa. I ordered a small thing of guacamole to supplement. Kids menu is perfectly priced and the selection is perfect size for easy decision making. Husband ordered two tacos and a tamale. Served with beans, rice and coleslaw. I ordered enchiladas ranchera and also served with beans, rice and coleslaw. Food was served promptly and hot. Waitress was attentive and checked on a perfect amount of time. She refilled drinks before we were out and had great timing of delivering the bill. As always a great experience. I've been to Mi Mexico dozens of time. Their chips and salsa great. I love thin and salty chips. I would prefer a good hot sauce, but most folks in the Midwest aren't partial to heat. This past time I was there was with a wedding party, so we had about 30 people. They were organized and prepared and they managed the process well in a side room. In my opinion, the part would have been serve a lot better with two additional servers rather than one guys butt off and service being a bit slow. I have been other time with a friend and family and the services has been spot on. I enjoyed the fajitas - enough for three people! I'm not sure what they call the blue margarita, but it is definitely worth enjoying. read more

I haven't been here in years. When we came before, we liked that it wasn't an every day Mexican restaurant. It still is different. Beans were served with chips and salsa. Chips were warm and light. Salsa had a lot of chipotle in it. Guacamole had tomato and onion and had a slight bitter taste. The chicken mole was a lighter orange sauce which they indicate was made with peanut butter. I liked it but it was very sweet. It reminded me of Puerto Vallarta and an orange mole we had there. I also think it had ginger in the sauce. The pleasant surprise was the pickled cabbage! Standard Mexican joint with tacky and bright decor. We came right as it opened one day. No music was playing and there were a lot of staff setting up and preparing for the day and hollering stuff at each other so the ambience was a little lacking. The food was muy sabroso or "on point" as my husband likes to say! He ordered the carne asada regular portion and it was the perfect size for a reasonable lunch, and I ordered the asada nachos. I came here as part of a family event, which included my Mom and Dad and my Sister's family. Let's just say I was underwhelmed all around. It's a busy place so they must be something right. And I'll give them a positive for seating us relatively quickly in prime time. Past that, the time it took to order, the time between order and the kitchen, and the time from finish to bill were all glacial in speed. There is not much good to say about Mi Mexico. It is just another standard gringoized family Mexican restaurant that you find in places like white bread West Des Moines. Too many people think it is good and people travelling through on the interstate don't have much choice. The salsa was bad, overloaded with oregano to the point of bitterness and tons of onion hunks accompanying tasteless chips. Ms T's beef tostada and enchilada had no seasoning, good or bad. I had hope for my tacos al carbon. My hopes were dashed. The beef had never seen any carbon neither was there any flavor from a comal. The tortillas were dredged enchilada style and were absolutely soggy. I had to eat these tacos with a fork. No way could you pick them up. The meat was dressed with a tomato sauce making it sweet and sour, which was weird and inappropriate. The frijoles were not bad, but the rice was tasteless. Circumstances pretty much tied us to eating here and we did not expect much. We did not get much either. I recommend you find something else. These people were obviously run out of Mexico because they cooked like this. read more

I had family staying out near this Mexican restaurant so I suggested we give it a try! For a Thursday night at 6pm it was pretty slammed, located next to multiple hotels, and right off the highway this is a perfect spot to stop for Mexican food if you are driving north or south on I-35 and are hungry! Our food came out fast! Under five minutes from when we ordered which was incredible! The chips and salsa (also bean dip Free) were great, the salsa had a kick and a hefty amount of cilantro with out being over bearing! I ordered a veggie burrito with no cheese and sour cream to make it vegan! It was big, and full of goodness! The guac was fresh and delicious! All in all a great burrito! The staff was super nice, re filling chips and water and the price was great! The mens bathroom looks like it could use a few repairs and the outside wasn't much to write home about, but once inside you will feel right and home! I will be back! read more

It is extremely authentic Mexican anyone who love Mexican food will love this place! It is still an inexpensive meal similar menu to most Mexican restaurants. You have you small plate dinners and large dinners. Except here most dish's come with coleslaw. As i am not a coleslaw fan I can only go on what others have told me that it is very tasty. The service is great from the door to the bar friendly makes you feel like family. Do not be thrown off when they speak Spanish and wait for a second then ask in English. Some people do not like it I do adds to the atmosphere of it being authentic! Plus I have learned some more Spanish!
