Just what I wanted. This is food like I grew up with. Simple, bad for you, great tasting. The margaritas are fantastic. I had the "small" combination of a chili relleno and shredded beef enchilada. It was a very generous portion of food that came with rice, retried beans, and the complimentary chips and salsa. I was by myself, so this was more than enough food. I left completely satisfied and full. The relleno wasn't overcooked, the shredded beef enchilada was tender. The lot was spicy enough to give you a sniffle, but not so hot you had stop eating to recover. And I had the Cadillac Margarita. I'd come back for this alone, they don't skimp on the content. Very tasty and I was happy not to need to drive anything. Very good. If you're from California, you'll recognize this comfort food immediately, this place reminds me of the food I grew up with. Terrible experience all around. The food was extremely bland, even the hot salsa, which we were hoping would spice things up for us. Truly tasteless food. I ordered a beef burrito and the beef was in long rubbery strips. At 4pm on a Saturday afternoon there were customers and staff cursing left and right. No body did anything about it when asked. I went to Mi Mexico with a group of 15 co-workers at lunch. Apparently no-one had thought to make reservations. When I arrived I told them about the group and it was "no problemo!" They had a table ready in minutes with chips, salsa and all of the standard items. Everyone said they enjoyed their meals. I had the Pollo a la Crema, which was amazing! I hadn't had it before but the mix of creams and cheese with the chicken was smooth and delicious. I had ordered a Chile Relleno on the side and was disappointed with it. They either didn't seal it properly with the coating or didn't fill it properly, but it was essentially a coated poblano pepper with the slightest crust of hard cheese inside, hardly relleno (filled) at all. Horrible service!! Our server was obviously busy but made no effort whatsoever to even just be like "hey guys, I'm so sorry, we are slammed tonight, I'll be with you in just a minute." No customer service skills at all. A smile and just plain friendliness goes a longg way. We never did receive some of the items we asked for and my margarita was taken before I was even finished with it. Getting drink refills was almost impossible and we had to ask other servers/food runners to get our waitress several times. The guy who was in charge of chips though, was awesome! He was on top of it and brought us items our server should of been taking care of. When we asked to speak with the manager to let him know, he made excuses and said in 10 years, he's NEVER heard a complaint! Really? Never? Yeah, right. We can't be the only unhappy ones in 10 years. I'm on the fence between 3 and 4 stars. The food leaned toward 4, and the service toward 3, but all in all it was a good experience. I ordered beef burritos and the meat was tender with a good flavor. Chips and salsa were fine, with some bite to the salsa. As others have mentioned the margaritas come out in a shaker so it keeps them cold. It was decent - not the best I've had, but pretty good. Service is a bit uneven. There were about 10-15 people in the lobby when we arrived at 6:30 on a Saturday, but they got us all seated within about 4-5 minutes. The waitress really wanted us to place our order quickly, and when we asked for a few more minutes, we got quite a few more before she returned. The drinks did arrive pretty quickly after we ordered them, and our food took about 10-15 minutes. The food was hot when it arrived, and everyone enjoyed it, but then it did take a bit for us to get our check. When we left the lobby was overflowing with people and it's a pretty good-sized place, so you may wait a few minutes if you come on a busy night, but you should get in reasonably soon. read more

A friend and I have been trying different Mexican restaurants in the area and we tried Mi Mexico last weekend. We were greeted with a glass of warm water no ice in sight. I ordered the 3 meat fajitas. Shrimp, chicken & beef. There were 4 shrimp on the large platter. They were good but seemed pretty chintzy! I had a lot of left over to take home & enjoyed it all. I also had 2 $5.00 Cuervo gold margaritas and they were very good! Other places we've tried were 11.00 for one that wasn't as tasty as these. My friend had her usual Taco Salad. She said it was good but to me it was served with hot steamy beef on top that would have made the salad soggy. Mi Mexico will be one of the Mexican restaurants we try again! Mi Mexico es muy delicioso! When we first walked in, we wanted to sit outside, it was a nice Friday evening. The hostess told us that the wait would be too long, so we settled for a booth. After we all ordered our drinks we asked our waiter what would be the best thing to order, he kept saying 'Everything is Good'. Which was of no assistance, but we proceeded to make these decisions on our own, nonetheless. It took about 30-45 minutes for our food to be delivered. Food and drink are great here. Everything I've had from the chips and salsa to the entrees has been wonderful. My favorites are the seafood enchiladas, the tacos al carbon and any form of nachos. They make a great piña colada and the chambourd margarita is a refreshing treat. My problem here is the service. I generally go out to eat with my boyfriend or my friends. I feel like a few times here, the table has been an afterthought to our server. Drinks come quickly, food takes 25-30 minutes (as I'm sitting with an empty water glass), and it takes even longer to get a check when I'm ready to leave. I do love the little abuelita who works as a hostess on Saturday nights. She warms my heart. It's hard when a place you go to eat has great food, but you feel like it's going to be more of a hassle than it's worth to get it. read more

The only reason I give this restaurant a one star is due to the sweet woman server who tried to make our situation work. We were traveling and called ahead...twice...to see if we could sit in the patio with our dog. Both times we were told yes. When we arrived and were being seated one of the servers (wearing it shirt with "thank you for your support" in the back came over and said in an aggressive voice that no dogs were allowed, I told him that we were informed that it was ok. He stormed off, muttering rude comments in Spanish, clearly not knowing that I am a native speaker!!! We sat for another 15 minutes until a young woman server asked us if we wanted something. I said that if my dog (who was asleep under the table) was a problem we would go elsewhere. Another 10 minutes passed. I tried to get the male servers attention as he whizzed close to our table. When I addressed him in Spanish, he glared at me and from then in avoided passing close to our table. The young woman finally served us and was super nice. We left her a good tip. The male server was disgraceful and rude and I will never support this restaurant again, but will patronize the one 1/2 mile down the road and spread the word. The food was just ok, not bad but nit particularly tasty. I did like that they had Pipian mole, and the poblano mole was very sweet...good but missing that xocolatl touch. Great lunch spot in the Clive area! When we arrived we were seated immediately with waters, chips, salsa AND refried bean dip! The salsa had an awesome flavor without being too spicy or bland and the beans were served warm. They have an awesome lunch menu something for everyone that I believe is all under $7 dollars. They also had another lunch menu served with larger portions still under $10. Everyone at my table all order something different. We were very impressed with how LARGE the portions were for that price and tasty! But the best part.... $3 Margaritas!! This was over the lunch hour but I'm sure the happy Hour is great too. I could hear them talking about me & laughing from the back of the kitchen. Little did they know mi apa's familia es de Pacana Jalisco & I was traveling through from California. I ordered in Spanish and when the waiter saw my Mexican last name he was surprised. They ruined my day and made my entire meal uncomfortable. We're just about regulars here. How have I not written a review yet?? Mi MeXiCo is as good as it gets! They have more authentic, border-style Mexican dishes. You can get your normal flour-wrapped burritos, enchiladas, and rice dishes smothered in gooey cheese, but they've also got a lighter menu for the more conscious crowd. Everything is fresh and delicious. Their salsa is good enough to make me suffer through the annoyance of being "mildly allergic" to cilantro, because it's the best house salsa in town. Don't worry though, I don't have to eat it all the time, because they also give you refried bean dip with every basket of chips. It's legit. My typical order: Shrimp fajitas with corn tortillas, black beans instead of refried, no guac or sour cream. (I know, I know... who doesn't like guac and sour cream? Someone who is allergic to dairy and cilantro, that's who.) The other items I can eat and enjoy: Mexican Style Chicken, Tamales, Carne Azada, Steak a la Chicana. Everything is fresh, piping hot, and is consistently the best Mexican food in town. The staff is friendly, they can answer any of your questions (food allergy kid over here, trust me) and they offer a large menu with a ton of variety! For all you people who gave this restaurant a good review, you need your taste buds checked!! There is nothing authentic or good about this place!! I was raised in Los Angeles California and have been in Iowa for 4 years. This is Mexican food for gringo's. Plain and simple. I ordered a 'picadillo" enchilada and a chile relleno. Absolutely gross. It was NOT a picadillo, http://www.tasteofcuba.com/picadillo.html , enchilada, it was a machaca enchilada, a bad one at that! Dry, flavorless. The chile relleno was hard, had seeds in it and the breading which should stick and be flavorful was entirely greasy and falling off the chile... that happens when you do not cook the chile properly and have a shitty breading. The rice and beans were bland. The best part of my meal was the coke I drank. I hear their margaritas are good (I don't believe it), but I don't drink, so I didn't try it. I could not eat it. It was NOT eatable at all. When the waiter came I told him of all this and he just shrugged and took my plate. Ok then. My husband ordered a burrito which he did not like either, it was BLAND!!! But he ate most of it cuz he was much hungrier than me I suppose. I just got grossed out after a few bites. You people who are saying it's authentic have obviously never had REAL Mexican food. Here is my advise if you want ANYTHING close to Mexican food in Des Moines... and I have been to many Mexican restaurants, MANY, it's my favorite food. There is a place across from the north side of Mercy hospital, I can't even remember the name despite being there so many times, I guess I didn't care cuz I know where it is and if I want anything close to authentic Mexican food, I go there... A couple of hours from Oaxaca, over the Sierra Madre mountains, is the sleepy, beachside town of Puerto Escondido. When my friends Jen and Ryan parked their car and made their way to the beach, they were followed by a local man with chairs and an umbrella who placed them where they chose to sit. "Keep the Cokes coming," cried Ryan, after finishing the fish tacos brought to their attention. No one would mistake this part of Iowa for Puerto Escondido...certainly not Guillermo, our able host at Mi Mexico. I'll be honest. The tableau of de rigeur Mexican decor didn't quite inspire confidence but I ordered the Pollo Azado Burrito and Ryan, the Flaco Burrito, off the "Fresh and Healthy Choices" menu. Stuffed with whole black beans, Spanish rice, chunks of white chicken and vegetables, the Pollo Azado was muy bueno. Drenched in Mi Mexico's house salsa and liberally sprinkled with jalapenos, I almost forgot that I wasn't in California anymore - the home of the best damn burritos in the world. I looked over at Ryan to see how he was doing just as he looked up and cried, "Keep the Cokes coming!" I swear I think I saw him squint when he said it ... as if the sun was reflecting off the azure waters of a beautiful memory. read more

This is the best place in Des Moines to get a margarita!!! And the service is awesome too-Jorge would have one in front of me within 5 min of sitting down, now thats good service! They also have a seperate menu with healthier, vegetarian options which is awesome and hard to find in Iowa, plus their produce is always fresh, and I heard a rumor that the owner is also an organic farmer or something, which makes me love it even more. I hesitate to give a 5 star review, but I really can't say anything bad about this place. I grew up in Arizona and California and honestly this place competes with some of the best out there. Make sure to order an entree, this is where they really shine. Great flavors, big portions (enough to share), and great atmosphere. I had the Chicken Pipian ("authentic Mexican dish. Chicken strips cooked with a mole-like sauce with a pumpkin seed flavor") with corn tortillas. It was absolutely delicious! Definitely is a place I will spend my money all the food we order was delicious even the guacamole with chips. When I say service was great to I forgot our server name but she was very good. We were staying down the street this was near the hotel. This is a fine place.... a little noisy... but people eat here and it is crowded for a reason! The chips are served with a decent salsa and some refried beans. Nice additional touch. The tamales... the best I have had. Masa Harina, lard, seasoned pork. Awesome! The cheese enchilada was not as good as my own... but that is common. : ) My ancho sauce rocks. But these were much better than average. The Chili Relleno was perfect. Perfect egg batter. Perfect poblano preparation [which is tedious]. Perfect cheese. Perfect ranchero sauce. The rice was better than average. The beans were excellent... and I detected lard once again. Yay! The service is a team approach. Horrible service, mediocre food. I met some friends whom I hadn't seen in quite some time. All was fine until about half of us were done and the other half still eating. The waitress asks us with forks still in hand if she can clear our plates. Um, no we're still eating. She clears plates for those who are done and brings us our individual bills. It was somewhat awkward and very rushed to pay our bill while still eating. We were never once asked how our food was or if we would like refills. She brings our receipts and makes a comment about how excited she is that she can leave now. Once again we state we aren't done?? She says no problem her cousin behind us would get anything we need. We never saw this cousin after that. We chatted for sometime after finishing our meal, our cold food still sitting in front of us. Those that finished early were offered boxes, the rest of us were out of luck. As I stood up to leave I noticed a young man ( cousin perhaps?) jumping up to see over the tall side of the booth to see if we were still there. Meh. I found it to be neither amazing or awful. Pretty standard Midwest version of Mexican food. I didn't feel it stood out in any way among the other options. I did think the salsa was weak in flavor and had a runny texture making it impossible to get any on your chip. I had something like the camarones a la crema and my sister had the chicken version. I thought it was too heavy of a dish, she loved hers. So, like most reviews, to each their own. I can't say that I crave any particular Mexican restaurant in the area, but I haven't tried them all. I prefer the flavors and quality you find in southern California. We were there during the lunch hour and found the service to be more than adequate. My girlfriend and I were doing some Christmas shopping and decided to stop here for some grub. Granted our normal place is Cancun where we get the excellent food/service consistently, it definitely wasn't that here. We walked in and seated in the bar area. Bartender was bussing and tending bar. She was extremely nice and doing her best in a busy area. The food was mostly bland - extremely disappointing. This place use to be awesome and now is just meh. I struggle between giving 3 and 4 stars here. The food was a 3-3.5 but the service was between 3.5-4. I ordered steak tacos, a margarita and flan for desert. All were very tasty and fresh. Our server was exceedingly personable and friendly. Even the bus boy who delivered the food was on his game.
