Tacos asada are ridiculous and shakers are amazing. Sit at the bar and Jorge will take care of you! Friendly staff and great service. Our kids absolutely love it to...specifically the queso dip! read more

This was our first time at this restaurant and we weren't impressed. The staff was very friendly, and we were seated quickly however, the margarita I had was not very good. It tasted like it was just poured out of a ready made jug you get at the store, not an actually made by a bartender. The food was very bland. My flautas we flavorless and dry and my husbands tacos were greasy and tasteless. We really wanted to like this place but we will not go back. read more

Good customer service goes a long way. My family and I stopped at Mi Mexico restaurant for lunch on our way back to NYC and what a horrible experience! The staff needs some serious diversity training. I'm Mexican American and I felt out place (discriminated) in a "MEXICAN" restaurant....go figure! The only reason why we didn't leave is because we were pressed on time and I thought the food was going to be halfway decent. In closing, enter at your own risk OR look for some other place to eat!!! Food was below average. Guacamole was dark. Lousy service. Order was wrong. Flies all over the place. The hostess and waitress need to refresh their customer service skills. read more

Excellent food and very authentic. Looking forward to going back to try out the Margharitas that everyone is talking about. So far, it's the best Mexican in the Des Moines but still comes in second to Cazador in Ankeny or Perry. read more

Better than average for the price, personable staff, great margaritas!

Large portions! I mean large! Warm fresh chips, salsa, beans!! Fresh chips are a deal breaker for me. Great service. Fast and friendly!!

This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants! Did I mention Mexican is my favorite? Jorge is a rock star in the margarita department and always smiling! Love Love Love the shaker margarita. read more

Mi Mexico...you have failed me for the final time. I've gave you many many chances. My first dining experiences were always great. Loved the food, perfect shaken margaritas, friendly servers. But, for the last few times....not good. The food was extremely salty, covered in mountains of cheese to where I couldn't find my food on the plate, poor, inattentive servers. I'm disappointed as my family used to enjoy stopping in. Unfortunately, after my last visit I spent the rest of the night feeling sick and regretting stopping in. Even though I only could stomach a few bites...it did a number on me. No bueno. read more

The service was fine and the price for lunch was reasonable ($6 lunch special #1), but this place just does not have anything special about it. If I were forced to think of a word to describe the food it would be "bland". You know what I mean? The kind of place where you know you ate there, but you simply cannot define the taste because it made no impact on the palate. Oh well. read more

Was tried from a long day of driving, and before checking in I went to this place, and what a surprise. It was really good food and inexpressive, I highly recommend it! read more

The manager harassed my friend about his ID being fake for asking a simple question about their margarita. Very unprofessional by the manager. We won't be returning. read more

So this is not where you go seeking ambiance or trendy vibes. Mi Mexico is super casual, the decor is dated, service sometimes spotty...so why 4 stars? Three words Arroz. Con. Pollo. Ok, maybe 4...Margaritas. Best in town. read more

I have eaten here a few times, but most recently was today with some colleagues on our lunch break. I will say, the food is always excellent here and the bean dip and salsa they bring out in the beginning is to die for. They are great about bringing by fresh chips when needed as well and filling water glasses often. The lunch menu has a lot of great options for not a lot of money and large portions. MY colleagues both got the Chimichangas which they love and get every time, and I ordered the two hardshell tacos! The only reason I am taking off a star, is that every time I come here, it seems like it takes much longer to receive the check than the rest of the service speed which is sort of disappointing, especially when on a timed lunch. We let a server know we were ready around 1:35, then another one around 1:43 and finally we received it at 1:50 from ANOTHER server. Kind of odd, and wasn't too sure who really was taking care of us. I appreciate the team effort to get things done though, just wish it would have been a bit more efficient! However, amazing food and very authentic tasting. Truly recommend if you are in the area, no matter what the occasion! read more

A friend said it had great reviews so we decided to give it a try. Salsa was terrible.

We love Mi Mexico, Dominique is our favorite server and this is by far the best Mexican food in Des Moines. Even my 13 year old Luke loves it . I recommend the arroz con pollo and an original margarita! read more

The chips and salsa was very good. Not too salty or spicy. The two chicken burrito large combo was ok. The chicken was kinda plain and it wasn't anything special. read more

This is a good place for some nice sit-down Mexican food. The service here was top-notch...fast and attentive. The food was average--there wasn't anything spectacular happening as far as the chips, salsa, or main dishes, but the price was okay, and the drink menu was really good. A decent casual place to take a date or have a dinner with friends. Its kind of loud and fast-paced in there so that makes a good place to take kids--no one is going to notice a loud child. I would come back again for sure. read more

Quickly becoming one of our 'go to' places. Great margaritas, served in your very own shaker, Mexican beers in a frosty glass and outdoor seating. Try the fajita salad - lots of tasty beef (or chicken), grilled peppers and onions over lettuce in a crispy shell served with spicy salsa, guac and sour cream - delish! read more

This is my absolute favorite place for Mexican food and their original margarita is an essential to order every time you're there. Food is flavorful and authentic, service is super fast and friendly. They have a great salsa verde that is spicy and we love it. I also enjoy that they have lighter options on the menu if you're trying to eat healthy. read more

Ate at Mi Mexico on 8-12.......tonight (8-15) went on line to pay my credit card bill and it appears that someone on the staff used our card to charge $150 worth of clothing on an online store. Will never eat at this restaurant again!!!!! Sharon Sioux City, IA read more

OK, June 2018 update: What a difference!! Very good dinner. New management or whatever, very improved over 3 years ago.

I haven't had a real margarita like this in a long time! If you visit this yummy restaurant, and are a margarita lover, order "the original margarita"! Yum. The guacamole is also fab, not to mention the great service and prices. read more

This is the 5th time we have stopped. The first time we thought the food was great so we decided to stop again hoping we would have the same experience. It didn't happen and after this last time we will not be coming back. First the beans were starting to go bad. The waitress could have painted a smile on herself if only for show. She had the biggest frown ever. But the worst were the flies flying around you while you are trying to eat. All we did was spend our time swapping them away. Never again ! read more

The service is going for shits. Only three were amazing each time and made you feel a home. George, his wife and bus girl Maria I believe. The rest were inconsistent and felt forced to be there. The bartender was obscene and full of herself. The food no longer tastes the same. I would no longer go there since they are no longer there for some reason. I do not find a coincidence that since some of them are no longer there, assuming since I haven't seen them in a month or so that the quality of the restaurant has and will continue to go down. I would advise others to no longer support this establishment. read more

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant. The employees are so nice and helpful and the food is absolutely amazing!! Highly suggest going there. It's one of the regular places we go to and are always happy with the outcome. read more

Some of the best service and food I have had in a while! No joke I ordered and had my food in less than five minutes! Made to order margaritas and a fun atmosphere! It is definitely a must! read more

Terrible food. Terrible service. Got pollo a la crema and it has 30x more onions mushrooms and green peppers than chicken. Only 5-6 pieces of chicken the size of my pinky. Watched a waitress clean the floor under a booth with a rag, then proceed to wipe the table with the same rag right after. read more

Terrible food and terrible service. It's really that simple. I ordered steak fajitas - which contained a few shreds of beef with the rest being onions and peppers. My girlfriend's food was awful as well, it looked like chicken Alfredo but instead of Alfredo sauce it was sour cream. The service was amazingly just as bad. It took 20 minutes to get our check once we were finished, then another 10 for the waitress to come back and take our payment. Will not return. read more

Pretty standard Mexican fare for the Midwest, but with some nice options you don't see in all the competitors. Enjoy the bean dip that comes alongside chips and salsa, sub refried beans for tasty black beans, and try an original margarita. Food comes quick, drinks are strong, and the servers are friendly. read more

My review is plain and simple family operated, shows in the atmospere and the food. No chain franchise meals here! Salsa and chips for free also delicious. Have patronized this establish multiple times, its my families top hispanic food choice. Always moderately busy, yet service and food are consistently good. We love the fajitas, and chicken tenders! Prices are awesone, lunch maybe two meals $15, dinner without drinks for four $30. read more

Meh. Food is Cisco-type food out of a can. Bland and boring. Service was fine. I probably won't return, as I can find much better elsewhere in DSM. read more

After being our "go-to" Mexican restaurant in the Des Moines area for many years we've experienced three not-so-great experiences recently at our former favorite. It's mainly the food, which seems now to settle into the same rut as other "Mexican" restaurants in the Midwest; cheap ingredients (? it sure tastes different), poorly prepared, and provided with average to poor service. Margarita's were watery, homemade chips to cooked too long, there was an abundance of cheese on everything, and our food obviously sat under a heat lamp, well, for a long time. Two of these experiences were in the bar, one of favorite places in town for a fun evening. We took out-of-town friends to show off the place on two of these occasions and were frankly a bit embarrassed. Maybe we just hit on a few nights of poor service. Hopefully. We'll give it another shot but at 0-for-3 of late we're not getting our hopes up too much. read more

Been living in Des Moines for 9 years and only wish we would have found this earlier. GREAT food, excellent service and top value for the buck. Wow.. Definitely will be back. read more

what a joke with customer service. Those lady dont know how to talk with customer. We are not there to see their shi*ty attitude. we ordered one food but taste was not so good and we explained sorry we didnt like the taste of this particular food and that lady told us that it was our fault you have pay for this, we were not even saying we will not pay. I was like seriously thats how they behave with customer ? They will charge if you dont like their food. I think If you tell them if you have any issue with their food, they have zero respect to their customer. Never going back there. read more

Was just stopping for the night on the way to Denver and found this excellent Mexican restaurant, good food, excellent service, will be stopping again on our way back. read more

My husband and I were in the mood for mexican and hungry. We stopped in for what we hoped would be a good meal. We started with chips and salsa. The chips had good texture, but the Salsa was runny and flavorless. These were edible though. My husaband had a combination platter with tacos and an enchilada. I had the Enchiladas Sueza all with chicken. Our meals were much the same - Totally Flavorless. Mine came with a pile of what I expected to be lettuce, it had more of a pickled/slaw texture. My best guess is that it was lettuce left under a heat lamp with some of the green (very thin) tomatillo sauce on it. Even though I was hungry, I left one of my two enchiladas on my plate. The rice had no flavor what soever. On our rating scale this wan't just not good, it was bad. I really wish I had tried the margarita, but it would have to be one good margarita to save this place. read more

Nice stop off point between MN and KC, MO. Staff is super friendly. Plus free bean dip! Awesome!

Don't believe the hype. Who puts yellow cheese on retried beans? Avocado tostada was ehh, the avocado was brown and tasted nasty. Salsa was okay, nothing special. Patrons at the bar were so loud and obnoxious. Looking for way better Mexican food while in Des Moines. Won't ever go back. read more

This was some of the worst Mexican food I have ever had. No flavor- very blah! The chips were cold and unsalted, the salsa tasted like taco sauce mixed with a lot of water, the beans were fresh out of a can, the rice was hard and proportions were small. I love Mexican food but will never again visit this place. Taco Johns can make a better burrito! YUCK! read more

The best Mexican food and service in the metro. Too many great things to say about the service and the food.
