There's even a courtyard where you can lounge a bit and listen to live music. While my kid and I didn't spend too much time in each shop, Old Town A's ambiance is warm and inviting and were greeted by friendly owners eager to share the history about each of their wares.

We decided on a mosaic memorial bench filled with the colors, images, and little things that reminded us of him and his love of Arizona. Neither of us could have imagined just how meaningful the experience would be. From the moment we arrived, Sam was absolutely wonderful. He gave us a thorough tour, explained how everything worked, walked us through the process, and made us feel completely welcome. His patience, knowledge, and kindness set the tone for the entire experience. And then there was Maddie. Oh, Maddie! I genuinely cannot say enough about this extraordinary human. She was AMAZING. Her creative feedback, encouragement, enthusiasm, and willingness to help us work through our ideas made all the difference. She knew exactly when to offer a suggestion, when to cheer us on, and when to let us figure things out for ourselves. She helped us make something that was truly ours, and I am so grateful for her. We also spent time with a wonderful volunteer whose name we unfortunately didn't catch. She explained how the tiles are actually made, walked us through the creative process behind the beautiful pieces we were using, and told us about her experience volunteering there. She was so enthusiastic about the work and the people that my mom might just be signing up to volunteer herself! And here's something that makes this place even more extraordinary: Santa Theresa Tile Works is a nonprofit that supports Imago Dei Middle School, a tuition-free private school serving children from low-income families in Tucson. The school provides not only an education, but meals, family resources, enrichment opportunities, and continued support for students after graduation. The revenue generated through Santa Theresa's workshops, mosaics, and other creative projects helps sustain this important educational mission. So not only did we get to spend an afternoon making something beautiful and deeply personal, but we also got to contribute to something that makes a real difference in the lives of children and families in the community. As an educator myself, I find that especially meaningful. What I loved most was that nobody treated us like customers completing a project. We were two people making something to remember someone we loved, and the care, generosity, and genuine interest we received made the entire afternoon feel special. We laughed, we created, we remembered my dad, and we left with something we will treasure forever. Santa Theresa Tile Works is everything I love about art and community. It's creative, welcoming, a little magical, and full of people who clearly love what they do. We cannot WAIT to go back. And Maddie, Sam, and the wonderful volunteer: thank you for helping my mom and me turn our love for my dad into something tangible and beautiful. You gave us so much more than a mosaic bench.
