After moving to North Carolina, I noticed there are a few Mi Cabana, and since there is one close by, I decided to go give it a try for dinner. Since I have never eaten at a Mi Cabana restaurant before but love some Mexican cuisine, I decided that I blindly and boldly try this restaurant food without checking out the reviews beforehand. Sometimes, one has to take risks ... right? Well, calculated risks. lol I will say that I got lucky on this one. The service was very friendly and surprisingly quick. First, I got some complimentary chips and salsa which were very good. BUT ... I LOVE me some queso!!! My delicious weakness. No shame! While going through the menu, I saw this particular entree had a   by the name. As someone that enjoys spicy food, I ordered the Pollo a la Crema. Which translates to "Creamed Chicken." This is grilled chicken covered with their special corn sauce and jalapeños sauce. It is served with rice, guacamole, salad, and picó de gallo which translates to "rooster's beak" aka "salsa fresca." The waitress informed me of their homemade hot sauce. If you love a little kick in your meal, definitely get some of their homemade hot sauce. It kicked the food up to a different level. I am not an expert on Mexican food, but I do love to eat and try something different. Since there are a few of Mi Cabana, I have a feeling I will be trying their other locations. I want to love this place, but can't. I've tried so many times to give the asada tacos a chance, but they're just not it. They need to be seasoned more because they're so bland, come with sauces or just taken off the menu. Service is always good though. I have no complaints there. It's my husbands every Friday ritual. Without a lot of tequila I find everything but the cheese dip just 'meh'. The chicken and steak are always tough and chewy. The chips, tortillas and beans always bland. The guacamole is always slightly over- inedible. I will say their coctel de camerones is always great. read more

My food is usually very good from here. Today I just had the nachos and cheese dip as a snack. I ordered it to go because I was working. Well the menu says $4.99 and I was questioning why is it more the $6 total. Come to find out they charge a .75 cent take out fee. That makes absolutely no sense to me. Listen guys and listen well, this food that I just had was not good whatsoever. The tamale's were bland and barely had meat in it also the sauce was tasteless. The cheese dip tasted watered down(probably not but it tasted like it) . My finance order beef fajita's, the beef was dry and not seasoned good. Went out for date night with my wife only to be seated with a waitress that wanted to go home. Order 2 drinks a margarita and a blue motorcycle. The margarita was to have sugar, instead it was salt and the drink was not made well. The BLUE MOTORCYCLE was not even drinkable. It was disgusting. When my wife told the waitresses all we got was an eye roll and an attitude. She was so bad that my wife and I got up and left for the last time. If you're a cheese lover, then this place is for you. Cheese is used to pretty much mask the blandness of their food. The entrees don't always come with what's listed on their menu description. I ordered the lunch portion of the Alambre, which comes with beans and a guacamole salad. I replaced the beans with rice and the salad didn't make it on the plate. Lol the waitress was sweet but seemed a little out of it. the staff seems to be all young teens who are more preoccupied with what's going on with them and not really the restaurant. Placed a to-go order so that we could use a gift card given to us. Staff at door were polite. They went to speak to someone who told them it couldn't be used. I asked for an explanation, and the manager or whomever they consulted said it wasn't in their new system, and I could try the other location. We stopped by here yesterday. It was our fist time eating here. I can honestly say that we weren't too impressed. My wife had the fish tacos and it was served as a make your own style plate. All of the fixings were separate and you basically build your own tacos. The fixings were a little sad. The lettuce was brown, cheese looked aged and the fish looked like hush puppies. Little to no flavor. I had the carnitas. The carnitas are usually my go-to option when trying a new spot. Again, it was just ok. It was served with rice and beans but overall lacked the flavor I was hoping for. We don't come to Jacksonville often and usually try something new when we come out here. It's a pretty average Mexican restaurant, nothing special. I feel like 3 star may be generous though. Maybe a 2.5. Reasons: the salsa and queso are watered-down, and I prefer my salsa medium to hot. This salsa was mild and could have used a touch more seasoning. I had a burrito and my husband had a torta. Both were as expected, but I will say the papas fritas (French fries) were delicious. The atmosphere was hectic. Granted, it could have been because it's the day before Christmas eve, but the phone was ringing off the hook, they seemed to be understaffed so the waiter/waitresses were running around trying to get to everyone. There was a wait at the door, and the host had to step away to help serve. At one point, the music stopped as well. I wouldn't rule out another try, just not anytime soon. read more

The food taste as if it is pulled out of the freezer and microwaved and the salsa is definitely from a can or probably Walmart since it's right next door.
