Mi Cabana - Rice and beans

Mi Cabana has really 'upped their game'! I really like what…read moreMi Cabana has done to create ambiance. I love the greenery and soft purple winking led lights through the center area. The wicker light shades on the drop lamps are very attractive and add to the overall feeling of cozy and gentle festiveness--love it! Our waiter, Esteven, was amazing!! He was attentive and very observant picking up on my penchant for spicy. My entree came out and he didn't think the preparers put the slightly spicy salsa on it--gathering that I like spicy, so he went back and asked if they put it on my entree. He was an awesome waiter ... for more than just that! I love the menu changes (at least for Fajitas, my favorite) since the last time we were there (a couple years, we've had to do take out for awhile ...long while). They added some spicy fajitas, so I had the 'Fajita Diabla.' The sauce (Esteven called 'salsa') was so flavorful and had a little kick which was delightful. We stuffed ourselves and even after a humongous Negro Modelo each, when we got home and I was putting leftovers away I couldn't help but eat some more of the Fajita Diabla--I was so full but it was so delicious!!! (I had also added a bit of their very hot 'sauce' to it...perfection!) I also really like the change in the 'choriqueso' appetizer. Smaller portion which rankled us at first, but the original one was huge/cost almost the same as a small entree, but now it comes out smaller but more attractive and they added a small portion of pickled sliced jalapeños and a small portion of the best Pico de Gallo I ever tried--the portions actually turned out perfect. I loved that there was a lot of small chopped fresh jalapeños in the Pico de Gallo and that the onions were wilted (love jalapeños, but fresh onions burn my stomach, go figure?!). I never liked Pico de Gallo until this experience tonight at Mi Cabana, Western Blvd, Jacksonville Mi Cabana has upped the restaurant experience in Jacksonville, big time! Well done, Mi Cabana

The chips were store bought and not fresh. The salsa tasted tinny and metallic, like it was made from tomato sauce from a can and not a very good brand. I was generally disappointed, but as I can see from other reviews some people seem to like it.

Its not authentic street food or Tex-Mex, like you might find out West, its Americanized Mexican and Latin dishes but everything we tried was a bit better than most, tastier and with a few more options that some chains offer. Since it was lunch the portions and plates were a little smaller but totally adequate and we didn't feel under served, more just right. Noteworthy is their light in-house made chips. I found the table salsa too mild but my wife thought it was perfect for her tastes. Most of the other guests seemed to be business people at lunch and a few other retirees like us. Typical mid-week fast casual restaurant. There was a bar and like many Mexican restraints a rather long menu. We look forward to going back when it's cooler and try the soups and other cool weather dishes. One thing I hate when I order fajitas is some places don't bother to cook the vegetables, ether in a a hurry or thinking the cast iron plate is going to do the job. I want my onions and peppers actually cooked (preferably grilled) and not hard. They got that right, every vegetable was perfectly grilled and seared. I had shrimp in mine and they all had a nice char while leaving the strip tender and not chewy or hard.

Okay but nothing remarkable. I got the birria pizza and was SHOCKED by how BAD and DISGUSTING it was. The meat was soft but the cheese they used was overpowering had an odd taste and overall not a good mix. The meat had no flavor. And the consome was a JOKE!!! Hahaha water. Our waitress was everywhere besides waiting tables. She came over twice while we had our food. Once to grab a refill and once as a walk by saying "you good". What a joke. My husband had a torta and whatever white stuff was on it looked curdled. (What ended up leading to throwing up).

We were greeted quickly upon arriving into Liliana's Colombian Restaurant and Bakery by an older gentleman, you could tell he has pride in this restaurant the way he spoke and helped with everything. The food, we order tostones for an appetizer. They were crispy, light, and simple. Could've used a bit of salt personally but the garlic sauce they came with really made up for it. So good! The steak had a ton of flavor, and the yellow rice was solid, though my family actually liked the white rice better overall. We ordered a mix of plates with yellow rice and fries, others with white rice and tostones. I went with the arroz con pollo (classic choice), and my youngest had the chicken nuggets and fries. Only downside: my meal came out about 10 minutes after everyone else's, which was a little frustrating but not warrant for complaints. Our waiter was really sweet, a tad slow checking in sometimes, but he was super accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. He even got honey on the side for my kiddos nuggets. Odd request but it's a thing. A big surprise but we got a free choice of a pastry at the end, which was really nice. My kids picked flan and said it was light, firm, but still creamy. Not too mushy. In the end the vibe is very family friendly. They play Latin music in the background, but it's quiet and chill, easy to drown out and still enjoy. I would love to see this place flourish, I know they deserve it, there's a lot of love put into this place. If we're ever in town again, we'll be back.
