I have nothing but great things to say about MG Constructors and Engineers. I hired them to perform foundation leveling and repairs when a previous contractor lied about performing the work. Shay was the engineering and he was great in explaining what work was being performed and why. His reports were very meticulous with great photos showing the poor workmanship my previous contractors did. This was a long project and I got to know Anthony and his team very well. They were all really great guys who worked hard all day. They even went above and beyond by helping me fix some doors that were stuck after the leveling, helped add a coaxial cable, and even added foam to some new pipes that the previous contractor failed to do. This is my second review for MG Constructors, and our second project. This was my first experience with rehabilitating an old house, but I have had lots of experience with contractors (2 new construction, 2 remodels & 1 addition). MG Construction was by far the best service I have ever experienced. Mark and his crews show up on time every day they say they will be there, and they do excellent work. They also work diligently to minimize messes. We have had MG Construction do two separate projects on our 75 year old home: he did earthquake retrofit, repaired a crumbling foundation and installed a sump pump for the first project. The second project his crews chipped away the old stucco around the decayed window sills and casement as well as the stucco around the base installing a weep screed. The did a great job matching the unusual stucco finish on the property and our home is now water tight. I highly recommend Mark and MG Constructors. read more

We worked with MG constructors and engineers on two projects so far. One project was for foundation repair, other one was for earthquake brace and bolt. The quality of work was top notch, and we felt our home was in good hands. We worked with Sudersan on structural and estimates for both projects. Sudersan was very reliable and honest, we felt we were given accurate information, and most importantly, got the confidence that they knew their work. They are on the expensive side, but their work quality is high. On the day of construction, they executed well, their construction work was high quality as well. After the work, we noticed that our HVAC lost some air pressure (duct probably broke due to movement in crawl space). Mg construction promptly owned up and had an HVAC company debug and fixed the issue. This level of ownership and responsibility is rarely seen in this industry. Overall, we were impressed by the work, and are now working with them (Sudersan) on structural and architecture of our 2nd floor home addition. We hope we can sign them up for construction assuming the pricing works out. read more

MG Constructors installed a gravity drain around the perimeter of our home in late 2017. It's a beautiful drain, if you can imagine that. They are not cheap, but they are fair. I've had mediocre experiences with contractors when trying to budget hunt, and for drainage on my property I could not afford to have mistakes or sloppiness. I was told they were among the best, so I shelled out for MG. They do not take shortcuts. When you gather quotes for your next project you may very well find that MG charges more for nearly every task they do. When you are through with the project you will understand why. They are professional, responsive, and flexible. The front office, the foremen, and every tradesperson who arrived on my property was nothing but respectful, receptive to concerns, and eager to answer questions. They will not try to dodge your calls as you near the end of the job. They will answer them, and come out to fix every problem you bring up. I really cannot say enough about this company. I am going to go back to them first for anything I do of importance around my home as long as I can afford it. If you want to get a project taken care of with ZERO worries, call MG. We basically paid about $350 for Mike to come over and tell us if a wall is load bearing or not. To me, that's veryyyy steep pricing for ~30 to 40min inspection, even based on Bay Area standards. When I asked for a possible rough sketch of things/simple draft report summing up his suggestions in a simple language (and trying to find some justification for the $350 price tag), he was swamped and offered to get it done in a week to 10 day time. Mark come out to to evaluate the foundation of a house that I was purchasing. Suffice to say he saved me from a minimum $50,000 head ache. His work is very thorough and was very satisfied with his work and investigating all corners of the crawl space. I learned to never trust the real estate agent, including my own agent, because they are there to make the sale. However, you need to have your own due diligence and I highly recommend Mark to give you an accurate and unbiased report. I used MG Constructors to repair a vertical crack in the foundation of a home I was selling. I was concerned that potential buyers would reject a home with a foundation issue. It was important to me that the company that completed the repairs be reputable and professional. Most importantly, that they issue a work repair report that buyers can clearly understand. I wanted to investigate retrofitting my home's foundation to strengthen it for earthquakes and to obtain a discount on my CEA earthquake insurance premium. In this process, I came across MG Constructors online and called them. I was surprised that someone actually answered the phone and listened professionally to me then connected me to the principal of the company, Mark Garrison. Mark listened to my explanation of what was needed. He explained in very understandable terms about earthquake retrofitting and the different relevant code changes in California. He advised me to obtain from city hall the home's records, especially the architectural plans. These plans would allow him to determine initially what was needed, cutting cost for me. Mark also told me that I needed to obtain permission from the original architect for the plans. I was so impressed with Mark's knowledge, honesty, integrity, and professionalism. Following Mark's advice, I obtained the plans from the city, with permission from the original architect. I sent all this information to Mark along with photos. Over the past few weeks, Mark and I exchanged multiple emails and had multiple phone calls. I also spoke with a few of his staff briefly when he was not around, whom I found to be helpful and professional. After reviewing the plans and photos of my foundation, he gave me honest advice about what was needed to bring my home to the latest earthquake code, he explained what CEA needed for me to obtain the premium discount, and made a recommendation that did not involve any work or money for him or his company. Frankly, I was highly impressed. BTW, none of the other contractors I interacted with suggested that I obtain the plans from the city. None of the other contractors offered any real information or help. Also, my multiple calls to CEA confirmed that the information Mark gave me was 100% spot on. Form this experience, I can say that Mark Garrison is extremely knowledgeable about foundations, earthquake retrofitting, and California code changes stretching back decades. Mark is also a man of integrity and honesty. He is very professional and highly educated about construction, with a graduate degree in his field, and decades of experience. I have been a home owner for over 40 years and have hired multiple contactors for various projects in the past. Now, let me contrast my my experience with Mark with my experience with other contractors for this same earthquake retrofit investigation. Before finding Mark, I searched for contractors specializing in foundations and earthquake retrofitting and reached out to tens of these contractors. About half of them did not even respond to emails and phone messages. In some cases, when the contractor claimed to specialize in earthquake retrofitting exclusively, I left multiple phone messages and sent multiple emails, but received no replies at all. A few retrofit contractors replied weeks later to say that they were too busy. A few replied but were unprofessional and did not seem to know much about earthquake retrofitting. A few supposed retrofit contractors replied saying they would contact me in a few days but never did. One company, after receiving more information about the home and photos of the foundation replied saying the project is too complex for them. One contractor wanted thousands of dollars just to come to the house to give an estimate. Others started spamming my email and phone with unwanted emails and text messages. One contractor came to my home and gave me information about the foundation that turned out to be flat out wrong, based on my own research and based on CEA. July 16, 2017M MG Constructors performed a foundation inspection and offered a proposal of $4,600 to repair a "crack" in my foundation. It turned out to be a cosmetic flaw and I paid another company $600 to explore and fix the situation. I had a confrontation with Mark over this, but he has since reached out to me through Yelp. Mark and the team were terrific to work with in our recent remodel (removing a structural/load bearing wall between the kitchen and living room). Some of the things they did that really stood out: * Mark made time to answer all of our questions. He came out himself multiple times to inspect the work site and chat with my wife and me. He clearly explained the job, the estimate, etc. and worked with us to find areas to save cost. He was also a great sounding board, listening to our design ideas and giving advice from a structural perspective. * Mark's team got started on our project very quickly after signing the contract. They even worked holidays and weekends to get it done. Mark was conscientious about the noise and dust that the project would create, and worked with us to align the job with a family trip to minimize the days we were home during the construction. * The company threw in extras to ensure we would be thrilled with the job. They framed in our fridge area, placed extra outlets, and added a copper pipe/hook-up for our fridge water/ice line. The last was put in without us even asking for it. * They left the area spotless! Mark paid to have a cleaner come through at no cost to us. Coming home to our house was amazing for two reasons - 1) our kitchen was much more open to the rest of the house which we love and 2) the area was clean! * I feel that Mark and his team are honest, hard-working individuals that are very skilled at what they do. They were transparent about costs, timeframe and other factors, and came through exactly as promised. We are considering doing another structural project and they will definitely be our first choice! read more

Sonny, the engineering manager, always replied to our messages in a timely manner, answered questions and addressed concerns from us very patiently. I know that contractors are flaky in general; but these guys are way beyond anything I've seen. My bid contact was Gary; a part owner in the company. You'd think he would care about the customers more than this. The sad part is that I hadn't even given any money out yet. I can only imagine if I had accepted a bid and had paid already. I wanted them to do some drainage work on my property. I had Gary come over (he came reasonably fast), but never issues a bid. I had to call a couple of times and we agreed that we had to get the county involved for permits before that. He asked to call him every week & remind him to contact the county since he "often forgets". I have no issue with that as long as I see progress, but I never did. It's been over a year (4-5 months of me calling once a week to check for status). At the end of the time; they ended up telling me that the county had refused their permit. I ended up doing it myself and getting it in less time. I proceeded to call him so they could issue a bid on the work now that we had the right to do as planned, but that was another 2-3 months of calling once a week with promises to complete a bid in a timely manner. At this point in time; it's been over a year and I've given up on them. I liked them initially; since they did both eng. and construction work in one company; but in the end I really don't want to fight to get things done; so it's for the better. IMO; I've been overly generous in allowing them the chance to bid on my project. read more

Summary: If you want a high-quality job done, MG Constructors is the place to go. I had some major drainage work done on my house by MG Constructors recently. The process began with an inspection of the house by Mark. He did not sugar coat his opinion, and pointed out all the potential issues in a thoroughly written report. After some back-and-forth discussion, we came down to something that would fit my budget and still be effective. Throughout this initial process, Mark was responsive and got back to me in a fairly short amount of time (max few days). Also, he explained in detail the reasoning behind each repair. All the work took roughly 3 weeks to be completed. During the course of the work, there were some changes made in the content/scope (my only complaint). Some things took more time and effort, some things took less. In both cases, we revised the cost (up and down) and I believe MG Constructors was fair. In addition, they did a bunch of extra work on the house for us (fixing gutters, extra supports for underneath the floor, refinishing and painting parts of the house, etc.). Finally, the quality of the work was very good. A heavy duty liner was put underneath the house, everything was thoroughly sealed to the point I was impressed when inspecting it. The major test of the drainage will be when the rainy season starts, but they warranty everything for one year. The initial impression may be that MG Constructors is more expensive and takes longer to complete the job, but the truth, in my opinion, is that they take the necessary time to do things right and don't cut corners. The end result is a better return on your investment (less money and headache in the long run). If you want a quick and dirty job, go somewhere else. If you are willing to pay a little more for a high-quality job, MG Constructors is for you. read more

I presented them with a report from a structural engineer and they were able to get the work done in the price range that was quoted by the structural engineer (within 10% because of permits and such). I made a big mistake contacting this company. Another contractor recommended me to contact MG Contractors for a small project in our garage. I called them and even emailed them pictures hoping to get an estimate. I was told that they need to send an engineer to look at it and it will cost me $350. I regret deeply for agreeing to it but at that time I needed desperately someone to fix it asap because the entire house structure wasn't safe due to the support beam being damaged by termites. Engineer Tim showed up, confirmed my concerns and took pictures. I also had questions about the structure of our walls and ceilings in the kitchen but he couldn't answer any of them. He took more pictures and was gone in 45 minutes. I guess I paid $350 for a photo shoot because there was definitely no value in the fact that he was an "engineer". He finally called me back 5 days later to tell how much it will cost but on each of my questions he just said "this is what the owner told me to say". The materials included in the proposal had 500% markup and the labor cost was the highest I've ever been quoted. Oh, and ALL local contractors provide proposals for free and are actually have a better understanding of the process. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS COMPANY BECAUSE THEIR SERVICES ARE QUESTIONABLE. They took advantage of me freaking out about my safety and took my money for nothing. We had such a small budget and I just lost a big fraction of it. read more
