I've been visiting Yankton regularly for nearly a decade and have eaten at most of the restaurants that have come, gone and stuck around except for Mexico Viejo...until last night. We came in for dinner and were seated quickly; drinks, chips and salsa were delivered quickly; orders were taken quickly. The menu is large and a little overwhelming because there are so many options but that is a complaint that isn't really a complaint. Our server was great, she refilled our chips and salsa twice throughout the meal and still offered to bring more at least once, so the restaurant is definitely not stingy about that. The chips came out warm and the salsa was very tasty. I struggled to decide on an entree because shrimp fajitas are typically my go to, but I've learned over the years that seafood can really be hit or miss in the Midwest. However, I just went with it and was more than pleasantly surprised. The shrimp were decently sized/portioned, cooked and seasoned perfectly, and I loved that there were mushrooms in it. The flour tortillas were excellent and the rice, beans, guacamole, etc. that came with it were fresh and flavorful. Husband had a steak burrito and in-laws split the Mazatlan fajitas. They seemed to enjoy their meals as well. Overall, this was a great experience. This place has been here for awhile (oldest Yelp review is 14 years old), so hopefully they stick around for much longer. Will definitely be back. read more

This restaurant was recommended to me by my hotel so decided to give it a try. Chips and salsa were good. Ordered the Pollo Los Cabos ( asked for no onions ). This is a tasty dish and I would definitely order again! My only complaint (minor) is the chicken is pretty thin so it was slightly dry. Ate here for the first time tonight, and it won't be my last! The food was so tasty! A little salty, but I feel like most restaurants are. First the complimentary chips and salsa are so good! And they give you a ton! We also ordered the queso, also very good! I would have liked a little more time between the appetizers and main entree but at least service was fast! I also had a margarita, strawberry on the rocks, pretty good. I had the two tacos, Mexican rice, and beans combo. It was pretty much the same as every other Mexican place I've ever been to that I have liked. We went on a Friday night and it was not busy at all, and only about $15 per person. With a margarita, queso, and full combo meal! So I would have to say the price is right also! read more

The meal was good but the inaccuracy on the menu is a sheer slap to the face. My father and I went to eat and on the menu it has iced tea for 1.50-2.50 I don't remember exactly and also states free refills as well. When we went to pay apparently refills are not free and the price of the drinks were listed at 5 dollars. We've been to the other main Mexican place before, so decided to try this one. Oh I'm so glad we did. My wife got the chicken with spinach and cheese....so so good. I got the seafood fajitas.... Best tilapia, scallops, shrimp and no skimping. The rice and beans were basic. Tortillas standard. Decent chips and salsa. Did I mention how good my fajitas were??? We also got the chorizo cheese dip. Where do they get the chorizo???? Perfectly seasoned!! There is a lot of meat and just some cheese. My wife would've preferred more cheese. That's ok. I cleaned the bowl. The guac was serviceable but nothing special. The pico very good. I also got flan. Too much chocolate sauce and whipped cream... Flan was slightly frozen in middle...and not silky texture... But it was a generous serving and I downed out right away. Service was decent and decor very nice. Restaurant is spacious and could handle larger groups. Prices were fair. Huge selection of menu items to choose from. Family friendly. Hankering for some Mexican fixings???? Had a party of 7, including kids. They were able to put us in two booths. Took our drinks and food choices right away. Free chips and salsa, extra basket of chips in the menu was $1.50, but wasn't charged. Food was out pretty quick, 10-15 min. Portions were adequate. Recommend Pollo Los Cabos on the menu, but everything was hot and fresh. I recommend checking this place out if you're hankering for authentic Mexican dishes. read more

We ate at the restuarant tonite in the dining room. Wow they have taken all kinds of precautions to keep people safe in their dining g room. The booths are only used that have been adapted for the safety of patrons with plexiglass doors that shut you inside like an old time phonep booth. They also sanitized all surfaces even the menus before giving them to us. Kudos to your staff and management for keeping your patrons safe. The food was delicious and service A+. I'm from California and I was really craving some Mexican food. I saw the reviews in yelp and decided to give it a try. I wasn't expecting much since this is South Dakota, but this place is terrible. First off, the salsa was straight up some cheap ass jar salsa. I should have just got the check at that point but thought I would at least give the food a chance. My girlfriend ordered the two taco plate and I got a burrito. When our food arrived it looked terrible. The tacos were on store bought shells and consisted of mostly lettuce. The meat was discussing. As for the burrito, well it was also terrible. The biggest disappointment was that there were Mexicans making the food. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. If you like gross food, eat here. Otherwise just make yourself some tacos at home. Even if you suck at cooking, you probably could do a better job. I only put one star because it wouldn't let me leave it with no stars. Walked in a right away we were greeted with a smile! We were seated and within 2 minutes had chips and salsa and 2 minutes later our order was being taken. Restaurant was not terribly busy but not slow either. Drink and food order taken and within 13 minutes of walking in the door we had our made to order and sizzling hot food! And let me tell you, IT. WAS. GOOOOOD!!!! I had the chimichanga and flauta combo platter and my conpanion the chicken fajitas. Also a side of guacamole. Let me start by saying, there are no authentic Mexican places in Yankton, SD. However, out of the two that this small town does have, this one is the most consistent as far as food goes. Service here is much worse than the other, but I care more about the food. The chips and salsa taste very fresh each time we come and they're always willing to give you more (no charge). Yankton has very strange liquor license laws so you won't be able to get a true margarita so I've never ordered one. They have to use some sort of a wine mix? I typically get the chimichanga which comes with a red sauce and quest on each half of it. Not sure why they don't combine the two as when they do mix on the plate, the result is very good! My husband stickers to the Rodeo fajitas which have seafood in them, so I won't try them. However, he thinks it's great. Let me say this is NOT the best Mexican food I've had, but in Yankton, it's the best you're going to get. read more

Worst Mexican food I've eaten. The salsa was terrible. Not sure why, but it tasted like cocktail sauce. A pitcher of margaritas was $17ish and was much too sweet for me. Tamales come smothered in a tomato/meat sauce.. Terrible. I'm not even sure what my chile relleno was... But it hardly had any chile pepper (found a 1" piece) in it and had meat (hamburger maybe?) inside and on top. Will not eat here again. The service was great and the food came fast. read more

Chips and salsa are delicious but don't forget to ask for the queso. They serve the absolute best chicken fajita taco salads around! Jumbo strawberry margaritas are a special treat and made with a wine base beings they don't have a full liquor license. Never had a bad meal there no matter what we order. Having moved to Yankton from southern California, we thought we'd never find Mexican that lived up to our standards, but this place proved us wrong. Its the best tasting, and most authentic Mexican restaurant around. This is the only Mexican place we've been that understands that cheese and sour cream don't go on everything..they even bring you limes with certain dishes.....if you don't know about the limes: its a basic fact that every decent authentic Mexican restaurant serves limes and pickled peppers and carrots with everything. We're so excited to have a new favorite restaurant. Awesome burritos, platters and tacos. They can make a mean margarita and they don't look at you funny when you ask for salt and lime in your beer. read more

It is as if someone's farm-wife grandmother decided to make Mexican food, never having had actual Mexican food. The place is dirty and broken. The salsa doesn't taste like anything but tomatoes. I am not impressed with the food. the tortillas are store bought and stick together. the salsa was extremely bland. you would expect maybe some cilantro and onion but this was like tomato sauce. the food was cold when we got it. the white queso was pretty good, and even though it is affordable, i probably wouldn't go back. they have way too many choices on the menu and if you have not been there before, it can be overwhelming. i am still overwhelmed and that's another reason i won't go back. i've been there before and experienced the same issues.
