Cool surf crowd, good food. Beachside at Narrabeen with heaps of parking if you have a council permit. Outside tables and stools for still evenings or benches bars and tables inside. Not really cutting edge Mexican (still cant find Huitaloche anywhere) but really good fresh flavours. A completely different world from usual suburban Mexican. I never got to the now closed Missy Foxhall at Mona Vale but it would have needed to be really good to compete with this. Cerviche of course, this version is prawn. Guacamole was perfect. Cuttlefish an absolute must. Our table had nearly everything on the list and everything was good. Margaritas were very very good. Staff excellent - all good. Ran into my cousin's son - a junior pro surfer. I think he is my first cousin who wishes I was once removed. Update 2013 Still 4 stars for food and service... just. What a palava trying to get a booking, "leave a message and we will get back to you between 3 and 4?" MC lives just around the corner and was a regular. Now she calls this place "Mexica?...No!". Even she can't get in! ....and.....only two seafood dishes? Gone are the cuttlefish and the calamari. Lovely fish taco no doubt and the prawn cerviche is still great if a bit chilled. A catch up with childhood friends has been decided for dinner at a recently opened and popular restaurant called Mexicano in Narrabeen. So I gun it down Wakehurst Parkway in hot pursuit anxious as I am late, leaving a sick partner behind who was eager to come to Mexicano and boy am I thankful that when I arrive the parking is very easy. The restaurant itself is full to the brim and very nice after a long day to be greeted warmly by the restaurant manager and shown to my table. I immediately love the configuration of the restaurant and imagine on summer evenings the windows wide open taking in the sea air. The decor style is simple, stylish with clean lines right throughout the venue even to the signage which is also simple using the Mexican 'death mask' a nod to an important tradition of the 'Festival of the Dead'. I sip my friends Jalapenos margarita on the rocks ($15) surprised by its strength and that is also very refreshing. I respond like I have eaten a chilly much to the amusement of a romantic couple enjoying cocktails at the bar. The order is decided quickly as we are all starving and I trust the recommendations of my friends who have tried the food before and then equally impressed when the Restaurant manager remembers each item without writing it down and promptly repeats our order back to us. This is skill rarely seen even in the best of fine dining restaurants and is appreciated by us all. The much talked about roasted corn on cob with chipotle mayonnaise, salty cheese, smoked spice and lime arrives before me and I devour with eagerness and know it deserves all the praise I have read about. The beef chimichanga's follow. Chimichangas I learn is burrito prepared with meat. They hardly look like burritos to me as they are ever so dainty and to my eye resemble a combination of a Chinese dim sims and Thai money bags wrapped ever so cutely with a string ($12). I love them - crispy coverings with shredded beef, cucumber and fresh bullet chilli salsa what a combination bang full of flavour. This I enjoy with Picante espana by the glass which is Tempranillo/ Shiraz 2009 Rioja Spain. The wine list is impressive as is the cocktail list. I considered the main and one of the highlights to be the pork shoulder quesadillas with black beans and cheese ($14). Though the overall winner of the meal is the amazing fish tacos with mango, cabbage and mayonnaise at three per serving ($12). I have never had these tacos containing fish before but I urge readers to visit and try these unique offerings. I imagine one day a little caravan serving as a Taqueria sitting in the car park with little showcases of the food that they serve at Mexicano to enjoy on the go. Right now I am happy to make another booking to bring back my partner because he will love it. Verdict: Creative mexican served in fantastic ambience. Great food, but nothing to do with Mexico. This is a cozy little place with some odd seating. But it's a fun atmosphere. The food was very good. But it was a terrible imitation of Mexican food. The chips and salsa were tasty, but without any kick. Fish tacos were delicious, but not at all like a real taco. The quesedias were tasty, but, again, without any spice, as was the ceviche. And good corn on the cob. I don't know what ethnicity they could claim, and the meal was great, but from from being Mexican. read more

With Mexican being the new Thai of Sydney we planned a night out with the in laws to celebrate a birthday, it seems like this is the go to birthday restaurant as there were two others in our sitting. So the sitting system works that you arrive at a time and have to be out by a certain time. That worked fine for us but did give it a little bit of a "chow hall" kind of feel like we were on a timetable. On arrival you are shown in to a small room packed with as many dining spots as they can manage, our table was a smallish table for 4 or a very squished table for 5, to get to the wall side of the table I had to move things on other peoples tables. The seating was pretty uncomfortable with a weird lip on the wall seats and the bench on the other side just big enough for my wife and I to sit next to each other. The music when we first arrived was some weird rock when combined with people talking sounded like white noise. However the food was excellent, we had the Cerveche, Fish Tacos, corn on the cob and some fries, all was delicious! The frozen margaritas were very strong but very tasty. I think this is this places redeeming quality that their food is awesome they can justify herding people in and out. Overall I am in two minds as to if I'll go back, it is very close to where I live, but I think the whole experience while brought up massively by the food was let down by the high price and something else missing. A disclaimer my favourite place is Chica bonita in Manly, the food is not as fancy but you wont leave there poor, and there is this cool kind of social vibe about the place that I love. On several occasions I've ended up talking to strangers at the bar. I think I just didn't get that here and while the food was great I missed that element. read more

The recently-opened Mexicano restaurant at Narrabeen has been the talk of the town (amongst my somewhat limited friends, anyway) Upon visiting, it's not hard to see why - Mexicano is excellent! One balmy night on the beaches, I set off. Right next to Narrabeen beach carpark, there's amples spaces for your car (The need for a parking sticker ceases at 6.00pm). Mexicano is packed - there's a birthday being celebrated, a double date, several family outings and what looks suspiciously like a first date going very, very well. We ask for an outdoor table, and are happily not refused. The seats are small and rickety, as is the table - but it's nice to be outside; inside seems quite noisy. We order drinks - kind of expensive, but yummy! I'm a huge fan of the Sangria - it's not so red wine-y as other places. The frozen margeritas are also nice. As a tapas-style place, as soon as one of the young and attentive waitstaff wander over we order. All the food we order is good; the guacamole is really yummy, although the chimychangas aren't really for me. Special shot out goes to the fish taco - sound suspicious to me too, but MAN - amazing! The mango and corriander makes it very tasty. The desserts are good too - I opted for the caramel crepe and I'm a lover. The service was excellent, although the food took a little while to come out. But it was so delicious it was worth it! However, be warned - get your credit card out, because this place ain't cheap! read more

Great food, best was the achote chicken tostadas, succulent and sweet and so we went back for more. Menu is mostly tacos and other street food options, but high end versions with excellent flavours. Busy bar, lots of hustle and bustle. Not a place for a quiet meal but it was a great environment. Food came quickly and you can choose the number of items per plate to match the number of guests. Nice setting and interior although, I ordered a the fish tacos, feeling very excited as fish tacos are my favourite I anticipatedly waited for my food. I was unpleasantly disappointed by the fish tacos i had received. The fish was obviously not fresh as it had an awful old fishy taste. the combination of the mayo was not a sufficient choice for the traditional flavours of real authentic mexican fish taco. Also the pineapple shit just seemed very out of place and i was just very confused as to why it was even there. Been trying to find good Mexican in Sydney for years now and made the trek out of the city tonight to Mexicano. While the food doesn't totally remind me of eating in Mexico, everything we had was really good. The chips & guacamole were delicious & I will be driving up there again for the fish tacos for sure! The frozen margarita was good as well. The portions are small however, & it's more like Mexican tapas so it gets a bit pricey, but the next time I'm craving Mexican, I will most likely be looking towards Narrabeen. read more

Wow. Have been here several times and does not disappoint. Kind of like a Mexican tapas. The menu is not massive but they sure know how to serve what they have listed. Atmosphere is good and there is a great selection of drinks. The food steers away from the sloppy tex-mex we have come to be used to in Sydney and relies more on well prepared and punchy finger food. Whilst all of it is good standouts for me are the chicken wings and corn cobs. Yum! The restaurant is small and can get pretty noisy at times but most people will agree that adds to the atmosphere. Great place to go for a meal and drinks, particularly on a weekend before you move on somewhere else. Don't forget to book! read more

What a complete disaster! Friends and I had been talking about coming to eat here for some time and we were excited that we had finally managed to get the night off together to make it happen. We made our booking on time but our table wasn't ready, I asked if we could sit at the bar and have a drink while we wait but were told that they seat dining guests there so we had to sit outside on the bench. Once we were seated it took a further 10-15 minutes for someone to come and speak to us and we promptly ordered a margarita. The margarita took longer to come to our table that it took our friend to drop us at the restaurant, drive back to newport to pick up the rest of our party, drive back, park and come inside. It continued like this for the rest of the evening. We even ordered double rounds to compensate for slow timing, the same order of drinks came out spaced 40 minutes apart. My friends sat with double rounds and myself and another with nothing. The food was also delivery at different times, my tacos tasty if you could get past the slathering of mayonnaise which is far from authentic. The guacamole and salsa was dismal for the price and it was cleared while we still had some remaining in the bowls. The churros were excellent though, well done! The table next to us was in and out before we got to dessert. After finally expressing to the staff my disappointment about the evening after biting my tounge for most of the night, they were quick to respond and compensate. I want to note that this is not a review of the staff on hand that night who were visibly stressed, slammed, exhausted and overall embarrassed about what went down. They were gracious and compensated us hugely when it came to paying the meal. I believe they were down three staff unexpectedly that night (we found out a few hours later). Is a crisis like this it should be the owner that steps in and says ill work tonight or call other staff in from other restaurants or only allow bookings and no walk-ins and not leave the mess to his few remaining employees. Glad we got the discount as I would have refused to pay full price for this mess. read more

Mexicano is in all likelihood, the most exceptional Mexico-inspired restaurant that the Sydney region has to offer. It's possible that the atmosphere was wonderful, but it is difficult to notice such things when you're beyond stimulated by beautiful presentations of incredible food and delicious cocktails. We started with the grilled corn and guacamole and immediately knew we were off to a great start. We followed up with the three cheese quesadilla, which tends to be bland when prepared in traditional Mexican restaurants in the U.S. and elsewhere in A.U., and we were blown away by the richness in flavors. Finally, the coconut-honeycomb-white chocolate ice cream sandwich literally moved me to (a very small amount of, ok?) tears. There's no excuse for that ridiculous response to a food item, but it happened and I can't change it. The deliciousness of this meal will forever taunt me in my dreams, from 10,000 miles away. read more

We showed up here early on Friday night - too early it turns out as they open at 6pm. Went across the road for a glass of something then back to sit outside ( those high stools don't look comfy, and we watched many diners grapple with discomfort during the evening) where it was cooler and staff were ready with cosy blankets. Started with the corn and a specialty dip: corn was amazing, dip was disappointing, even a bit flavourless aside from the picante peppery element. Then had the ceviche: again disappointing might have been the lack of sweetness in the citrus used, might have been a bit too much citrus skin in the mix. The fish tacos were a hit. The chicken mole tacos were not. Frozen marguerita went down a treat and staff were super lovely, efficient, professional. All up it was a bit disappointing. read more

Easy to find with great parking out the front. Deco is simple but fresh feel, though the stools we had I found a little small and therefore uncomfortable (we sat in the tables outside). We were promptly seated on arrival and if you want to dine early definitely make a reservation (we went on a Saturday night). We did have to wait awhile before our orders were taken, first time the waitress came around to take our drinks order only to realise we didn't even get given a drinks menu then it was a good 15 minutes from when we came in before I asked for our order to be taken. But it didn't taken long for our food to start coming out (pretty much straight away). We ordered a corn cob each (there was 2 of us), guacamole and corn chips, lamb shoulder quesadillas, pickled beetroot, beef brisket tacos and chimichangas. That was a lot of food for us, we managed to have everything but probably over ate. The food was very tasty and with 1 beer and a cider the bill came to just over $100. read more
