If you're driving through Lincoln along Lincoln Blvd, make a right on Fifth St., right over the railroad tracks, if you look to your left, you will find the Mexican Deli. don't blink, because you just might miss it. It's a hole in the wall with great food and service. This is the first Mexican restaurant I've eaten at in Lincoln. Just like opinions, everyone has their favorite Mexican restaurant. Mexican Deli delivers authentic Mexican favorites. Hands down, their chimichanga has got to be the Best in town. It is packed with meat and cheese and not fatty meat, which some places add or a lot of rice and beans fill it up. Matter of fact, Mexican Deli is the first place we ate a chimichanga at. So this review is 20 years over due. One of the schools I use to work at would get food catered from here and it is so good! They have the best rice and beans too. Yes I'm picky when it comes to frijoles and rice. No complaints here, it is always perfect. Lincoln has a handful of Mexican eateries and everyone has their favorite and this is mine.

The food always tastes great, however, I found half of a toothpick inside my chimichanga recently, so I'm gonna have to recommend going to Taqueria Gonzalez instead.

What a basic name for a restaurant, Mexican Deli. In reality I've known another restaurant elsewhere by the same name. This place is extremely basic and a bit of a 'hole on the wall'. You can easily miss it tucked way back off the street with a nondescript parking lot out front, and not much advertisement signage. It looks a bit like a uncared for Victorian cottage with a storefront from the street. Yet, the place is seemingly popular and busy, even mid-day, and very inexpensive. We got some small, mid-sized burritos, Chile Colorado, and they were delicious for a quick snack. The meat was tender and tasty, the tortilla very fresh and delicious. It came with a small container of spicy red sauce. I'll be back to try more things, including a super burrito. Albeit it a bit of a put off in initial appearance, I think they excel with the food offerings, at a very good price.

Awesome authentic Mexican food. I've been stopping by for more than 30 years and keep coming back. No frills, but five stars!

It can get busy during lunch, keeping in mind there are a limited number of tables for eating in. There's table service if you get one, and the staff is very efficient and cordial. The menu is also quite complementary to this type of place, all the traditional items. Prices are not bad. I ordered a Torta with Carnitas (grilled pork) and the portion was quite large and filling. The bread and all the ingredients were fresh and absolutely delicious. It can get messy and I went through several napkins. There was plenty of hot sauce which satisfied my spicy taste buds. I liberally put it on the sandwich as I ate it. Chips and salsa came out first and both hit the spot. I washed it down with lemonade, tasted freshly made and refreshing for this type of meal. This won't be at the top of my Mexican gourmet list, similar to Zocalo, but for a good competent meal, yes! I will be back to try other items.

I've started going to 3 Hermanos more because I think their food is better but today I happen to be near El Portal and short on time so I decided to pop in. It'll be my last time going to this establishment. The ladies taking orders and delivering food are unkind, give dirty looks and will talk crap about you. They don't even care if you hear them. They brought me shrimp tacos instead of fish and I kindly let the lady know that I ordered fish. I can't do shrimp unless it's breaded because of the texture. She started to argue with me a bit, and then gave me some dirty looks and walked over toward the kitchen. I was in the dining room across the restaurant and very loudly heard the girl taking orders talking about me and insisting I ordered shrimp. I was appalled by the behavior and got up and left the restaurant. Will not be returning because this is not a way to treat customers and I was nothing but kind while I was in there.

(Yes I hope he reads this lmao) Both times I have visited, the staff has been incredibly pleasant and personable. The food is absolutely chef's kiss. I love the Classico Tostada with shrimp. The chili oil adds the perfect touch. I also tried the ensalada de elote and it was delicious. It was surprisingly filling and satisfying all on its own. It's a very modern, small restaurant, and the bar seating is definitely the focal point of the space, though the overall vibe felt a little cold with minimal decoration. I'd love to come back to try their full omakase experience eventually, but the service was a real letdown. Even though we were the only two people in the restaurant most of the time, we felt like an inconvenience. At one point, I said out loud that we were ready to order; the staff including our waitress stopped for a second, looked at us, and then just went back to what they were doing without acknowledging us. It was as if we were on her time, and she was making it clear that she would get to us when she felt like it, not when we were ready. The wait for food was also way too long. Despite being the only ones there, I waited about 40 minutes for my ceviche mixto bowl ($22). For a raw dish that requires no actual cooking, that kind of delay in such a small space is hard to justify. We also had the broiled oysters ($15) and oyster shooters ($5), which were solid. I noticed the drink menu didn't have many sweet cocktail options, so I asked if they could make me a lemon drop instead; and they granted the request. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The food and drinks are great, but the service and kitchen speed really need to be more attentive to match the quality of the menu.
