You won't find Metuchen this gym again, not with a barge pole. You also won't find Metuchen myself in the locker room. I'm not into that. So it started badly, as on the way in, I got yelled at profusely, and I mean really yelled at, by some old man telling me I was driving the wrong way through the parking lot - and he stood in my way to yell at me too. It wasn't well marked and was banal as nobody else was driving in the lot. Then when I got on with my cardio, the TV was staticky, and while the gym had some decent stuff and some fit-looking members, I have to say these are not great facilities and the space is a little cramped. They offer no towels, no hairdryer, and in general, not one of the best I've used. I'd give it a 4 if not for the fact that the TV, lack of towels, parking issues, and especially getting yelled at, all made me not enjoy my workout much. read more

I am new to the community and was excited to sign my son up for the aquatics program. Reached out to Adam Soural, the head coach for guidance. He obviously did not pay attention to our conversations and recommended my child for his program that's from 7:30-8:30 Monday through Friday. As a working parent, that meant I had to get up earlier to get my child there for the program, drive home and dash off to work. I was willing because my child was very interested and I was looking forward to joining this community and meeting people. On 8/3/26, we arrived at the metuchen location only to be told the practice was at the Edison location. We dashed there to try and be as on time as possible out of respect. Upon arrival to the correct location, I saw a couple of what appeared to be 20 year olds. NOT ONE PERSON EVEN SAID GOOD MORNING! There were no introductions. A man, who later turned out to be head coach Adam Soural, seemed bothered by my questions (where are the locker rooms and what should we do before this practice starts) and then told my child to get in the water. Again, nooooo introductions or even a second to let my child know he's in a safe, community based environment, what he can expect, what he will learn, nothing!!! Not one adult there offered anything to say my child is in good hands or that we are welcomed into this community. I thought for a moment, maybe it's me, but then another parent showed up, upset. He also was not told the correct location and informed me this type of attitude is to be expected from Adam. At the end, Adam let me know the program was not the right fit for my son and told me aquatics coordinator, dawn Willemsen, would reach out. Here we are two days later and I have heard nothing. Even after emailing and expressing my disappointment in the lack of community the program has. First impressions matter when it comes to leaving your child with "trusted adults" THIS IS NOT IT!!!!! Prior to Covid, the facility was put on notice by me regarding unacceptable hygiene and cleanliness due to patrons leaving behind their wipes in the cup holders of various equipment. Only after a meeting with managers and CEO did it improve....briefly, while the employees walked up and down the floor giving me dirty looks because they now had to do something. The practice continued and did not follow normal hygiene practices, nor was anything enforced, ever. Covid comes, and enrolled patrons are notified that they can suspend membership until a specific date, and if not (suspended membership), it will automatically be re-enabled and charged unless notified. No ongoing communication has occurred since then, and only verbal information is/was provided. As of July 1st, no resumption of gym facilities yet they steal money from my on file credit card making an assumption that they may soon be able to open, and placing the burden of me having to keep extending my requested suspension. I'll assume I'm not going back as I'll be at risk, and because of their lackluster previous inabilities, I'm certain they may never return to normal. One might think that they would contact persons to ask if they minded them to have their funds stolen. read more

If you live in Metuchen, the Y is the closest option for a traditional gym. The membership is higher than other area gyms but they also offer more: daycare/after school, swimming, basketball, and access to other YMCAs. The exercise area is on the 2nd floor, equip with treadmills and machines that are in good condition. Compared to Jersey Strong/Retro it's smaller in comparison. There is always staff in the area and are very helpful. During certain times, especially before/after work, it can get full but I've never seen it super crowded. Also parking during those times can be hard to find and you might have to park on the street. It seems like most of the building has been renovated, minus the locker rooms. There is a family/children's locker room and an adult locker rooms so you don't have to worry about running into children. The floors can get wet and the actual lockers are metal and rusty. It can definitely use an update. There are a variety of classes available at the Y. They have yoga, cycling, zumba, etc. They can run all throughout the day as early as 6 am and as late as 8pm. Most of the classes are in a multipurpose room, but the layout is a little awkward especially if the class is more than 50% full. The classes are for all fitness levels and everyone is friendly; skews a little older. One of my main draws to the Y is the pool/swimming lessons. There are 2 pools; one shallow and one deep. I took the adult/teen swimming lessons which are taught in the shallow pool and actually learned how to swim:) Group classes are not that big (max 5 per class) and they usually have at least 2 instructors. If you plan to do lap swimming, certain times are busy especially in the morning and after work/school, and most likely will have to share a lane. This gym has a little bit of everything for all ages, but I would say its more for people with families or want a gym with a swimming pool. read more

I am not happy with their program and how it is run. Since the 2nd of school my child got elbowed on his face and his eye was swollen the assistant director or director were not aware till I picked up my son. I was very upset and now my other son got kicked in his private area and the director was not informed till i picked up my son and his glasses were broken. I am not pleased or happy with the Sacc program at the Ymca in Metuchen and Metuchen is categorized as high class town. read more

There are a lot of babehs here, but beyond that it's pretty nice for a YMCA. It does not smell nast. That counts for something right? They sort of corral the childrens into a separate area, so it's not so bad. The pool is essentially never open though, because of kids. They post the schedule online of when you can go. I feel a little weird going to a YMCA being a gay-mo...do they allow our kind? I need to research this. Meanwhile I wear my gay running shirt every time. During peak hours, I've definitely waited for space to lift weights and for the tread mill. But not more than 5 minutes. There was a time when there were no towels, and another time with no hot water. I've been 3 times now. The weight-lifting area is kinda small. But there is another building for members that is apparently larger...not being a member, I wouldn't know about it. The price for a drop-in is $10...not bad for a wayward traveler like me! read more

The Metuchen YMCA leadership seems to have completely forgotten that the "C" in YMCA stands for Christian, but you will find no Christian values being taught or promoted at the Metuchen YMCA. The Metuchen YMCA used to be a great place but over the last year or so they seem to have forgotten what the YMCA is supposed to really stand for. If you have traditional family values then avoid this place and especially avoid bringing your kids here. read more

First non-restaurant review! This place is great. It's a little pricey but you can tell the money goes to good use here (as of last Dec. they've got brand new treadmills, ellipticals, stationary bikes, and these cool computerized spinning cycles). I usually go at opening time twice a week (5:30am!) and I love the crowd. It's a very relaxed atmosphere and I feel like I am working out with family. No one is watching you and there is NO STARING at any one. I've used the babysiting service a handful of times on the weekend; nothing beats having some peace of mind while hitting the weights. They only cons I find is the parking lot with its diminutive parking spaces (I like my car so I park on the side streets) and the small weight room. read more

Overall we love METUCHEN YMCA, but just little complain about their ballet class. The schedule changes without notice and the class time was shorten from 50 minutes to 35 minutes again without notice. One of the class was cut short and combined with older kids. Just watch out the schedule changes. I also tried to complain to the manager but never got any response. read more

I'm a little reluctant to share this on the internets because it might affect one of the reasons why I love this place: how uncrowded it is. I never have to wait for a treadmill or bike and only sometimes had to wait a little bit for a weight machine. Yes, the space is a little small, but it has everything I need or would want (pools, basketball court, ping pong table). Did I mention free group classes? read more

Maybe this place is good if you have kids and you want them to learn to swim, but for a grown-up it is terrible. This is the worst gym I have ever been to, bar none, and I've been to other Y's so I know what they are usually like. First, they don t have enough parking - you have to park several blocks away if you go during peak hours. The place isn't clean... there's some strange odors and dubious looking areas. It is the only gym I have ever been to where I wiped down equipment BEFORE using it. Also, maintenance is bad and poorly planned. As I write this, the locker room/showers are shut down for maintenance for a week. No advance warning, not even a sign on the door. You just walk in, see that the furniture is thrown all over the place, and put two and two together. This is the way everything is done here. No-one tells you anything. No-one knows anything. There's also lots of kids. Especially if you go during non-peak hours. They try to keep them in their own areas, but some parents don't follow the rules and no-one enforces them, so you'll sometimes see 6 and 7 year olds running around in the gym area and fooling around on the machines. Forget about using the pool as an independent adult. It's nearly always drained, or full of kids, or blocked out because of a class. I gave this gym six weeks, which is a pretty fair shot, but it just doesn't hack it. If you live in the Metuchen/Edison area and wanna work out, look up some good workout routines that you can do at home, keep your money, and save your time. Good, reasonably priced gyms do not exist around here. read more

The gym itself has relatively good equipment and is rarely crowded. However, adult Men's locker room is disgusting. Stank and stale air. Mildew growing on shower curtains, dirty floors, splintering seating in the sauna. The staff could not care less, mentioned it many times and no resolution. Not to mentioned the rusted lockers. Avoid this place. Not sure how they can allow children in a place where they allow mildew to grow unchecked. read more

Love this place. Equipment is well-maintained. The staff is really really nice. The babysitters in the babysitting room are wonderful and knowledgeable. The personal trainers are great, as are the swimming instructors. read more

- This review is for their summer camp only - Very ordinary summer camp - no learning, no activity for kids. Kids are all gathered in a small play area. If rains, kids are all inside in even smaller room. I have seen my son and many other kids just sitting in a corner or lying on floor with their bag packs under their heads - because they were bored. My son told me 'all they tell us is 1-2-3 look at me and all kids have to answer them'. He complained about getting bored many days. Worse part - counselors, who are nice kids, but have no training on how to handle situations with kids, have no guidance. Admittedly on one day, a counselor did a great job in saving my son from a trouble; called me and kept me up to date until the situation was resolved. I am very grateful for that. However, that was an exception - here is the real experience.... A bully kid named B***** in my son's group was pushing him and hurting him. My son was told not to be mean with anyone by me/family so he informed the counselor, who didn't do much or rather didn't know what to do. This continued for a few days. So my son told me after a few such instances; I stopped by the next day and spoke with his counselor who told me 'the kid does this to all kids; he is not only picking on your kid.' I had to tell the counselor that it was actually not any consolation, in fact, it's worse than I thought. I asked him what he/Y was doing to do and he didn't have any clear answer. I had to tell my son to yell loudly when this B***** guy hits or pushes him again so counselors can hear him. They ended up separating them but B***** continued to bother my son. Worst part - on a hot summer day, out of blue, my son said 'I am f***** hot' - I could not believe my ears. I asked him to repeat what he just said; and he did - poor kid, didn't know what he was saying. I asked him if he knew the meaning and he said 'no he didn't but that he had heard that word.' I asked him who taught him this word and he very innocently said 'B*****' - this is the same kid who was bullying him earlier. Not only he was misbehaving but he was also spreading bad influence. I stopped sending my son to Y since that day. You will get better value for your money some place else - at least I am hoping your kids will not learn any foul words. I am very much disappointed in Y - I had high hopes. read more
