Okay, so I need to update my review. After writing my initial one, RF had reached out to me on Yelp and one of the employees there had approached me in order to help make the gym better. She had adjusted the fans in the gym which I came to understand that they were on but wasn't blowing physically in my direction on the treadmill. Some days are hotter and more humid than others so it could feel stuffy at times. But I really did appreciate that this Retro Fitness really cares about their customers which is a breath of fresh air because my last one did not! Lol. So now I get why so many people go to this gym, it's like everyone is so friendly and the employees make it comfortable enough for their customers to come back. I registered online ... easy to register and just go and start workout . 3 different pricing models , perfect for every needs .. they had a thanksgiving deal for dec free and it's good. Parking can be tough sometimes , but overall a very good location. Just next to DAS cricket and badminton. So , during cricket days , we can work out here and then play cricket. Great gym, awesome equipment, tested positive antibodies from covid 5 months ago, have worn masks as a requirement. Was excited to take off the mask and get back to working out and living a normal life. Called to confirm this was possible since many other retro's I have touched base with are using a mask optional rule, only to find out that the attendant will be asking you if you are vaccinated. Pretty sure this is against the law and would strongly recommend talking to your staff about what their job truly entails. read more

Small, stuffy and impossible to find parking. There are also lots of guys and girls loafing about on the equipment who are more absorbed by what's happening on their phones than about getting their work in and moving along. Debbie is the only reason I am rating retro 5 stars. She was extremely helpful and professional during my interactions with her. She helped resolve my issue quickly and effectively. If I ever decided to return to retro it will only to be because of her hospitality and attitude. I have mixed feelings about this gym. Bottom line: you get what you pay for. I signed up for the monthly plan which costs $25 a month because I knew I was going to be here for just 4 to 5 months in the area. Unfortunately sometimes you will be put in the position where they make you pay more than for what you get. when I tried to cancel my membership it was very difficult and almost had to pay another month that I did not want. some staff, especially the trainers seem very knowledgeable and friendly. on the other hand, the reception staff and management, including the owner are very difficult unprofessional and not helpful. management does not seem to care about their customers or their experience at the gym. they seem to feel that because it is so cheap they can cut corners, say whatever they want, and ignore customers. on two occasions they provided me wrong information about their membership rules, and when I tried to straighten the issues out, the managers and owner were very rude, refused to listen to my problem and concerns, and ultimately forced me to call the corporate office to finally resolve the billing issue. I would strongly recommend only signing up for the monthly plan. it's only five dollars a month more which comes out to $60 a year extra. however it's a major benefit to cancel anytime especially if you end up like me being one of the people who are unhappy or had a problem. that $60 is a better value to not be stuck with a gym that you do not even want to go to. The selection of equipment is adequate and generally good. sometimes their machines don't work properly because of loose bolts, mechanical wear or torn padding/ handles. sometimes especially between 3:30 PM and 7 PM it gets so crowded it's almost impossible to do a routine without adding an extra 30 to 45 minutes. The staff seem more interested in talking to themselves by the juice bar, or girls working out rather than organizing the weight racks or cleaning up equipment areas. Also, many of the people that use this gym have very poor gym etiquette and do not place back weights, not moving seats and benches back to their original spots, or instead putting them in random locations which is very inconvenient. Only once did I see a staff member who was one of the good ones being proactive about this. None of the other staff helped and just stood around talking instead. One of the few positive experiences I had was with the trainer who was always willing to take my body fat percentage whenever I asked him. He was courteous, friendly, and always willing to give me tips whenever I had questions. Several times I had to ask questions to the desk staff about my membership policy and they provided me inaccurate and ultimately conflicting information. There is also a leaky roof above the entire facility. They still have not fixed it completely and just patched it up with tarp. I still get dripped on once in a while which is annoying. I do not plan to return to this gym after my membership is finished at the end of this month. My final thought is to suggest to find an alternative gym if there is another one close to you, even if it costs a bit more. read more

This gym is hands down a really good one! Every thing is clean and no judgemental looks from anyone! Every one is there to work out and nothing else! They have a mini theater while working out!?!? Been coming to this gym since it has opened and love it. Positives: -Very very, clean. All the way down to the counter tops in the locker room. -Huge gym space -Large variety of equipment -Babysitting -Very cheap -Great atmosphere -Great people, most are even considerate enough to rack their weights. Please note that this gym gets very crowded during peak times (Monday-Thursday from about 5pm-8pm). So I would not recommend coming at this time if you can help it. During peak time it is also very difficult to find parking. One other thing I would like to mention is that their is definitely a bit of a funky smell throughout the gym. This is due to the spice factory/plant a couple doors down. At this point after 2 years of coming I am used to this smell and no longer notice it, but if your are new you will recognize it. My biggest thing about gyms is the cleanliness and this place is top notch! I have nothing against this gym,when I joined about six years ago everything was okay,then I moved out of area but never got around to canceling my account.When I tried to notify Retro that I wanted to cancel my membership that when it got ridiculous. Everyone should read the fine print,In order for me to cancel membership i had to write a letter but I couldn't drop it off they are asking me to send it certified mail ( more expenses ) oh yeah also it takes two months to process cancellation which they are still charging you while they are processing you cancelation. This is not only the best retro fitness I've ever gone to but also one of the best gyms overall. Staff is super friendly and they truly care about the image of the club. After having been a member for two and a half years now, I can say that the staff at the front desk in the early morning is fantastic (Judy and Debbie). The owners, Tom and Mitch, are very approachable and usually quick to respond to a question, comment or concern when they are on site. Otherwise, some of the front desk staff can be fairly nonchalant and can come across with a very apathetic attitude. Your reception at the desk is completely dependent on who is working. The gym is quite clean with adequate equipment and free weights for a variety of workouts, ranging from strength training to cardio. Lots of different machines to work different areas of your body and accommodate varied workout routines. Machines are very rarely out of order and are maintained quite well. They often swap out older machines with newer ones a few times a year. The locker rooms and restrooms are fairly clean as well, although they have the typical locker room smell. Can't do much about that, I guess. Lots of lockers and counter space! The leaky roof issue seems to have been semi-resolved, but there are still puddles on occasion. At least it's not like an indoor version of Seattle like it was when I first started going. Crowds are large during peak hours as you expect with a Retro or similar facility. If you can get there during off peak hours, you won't have to wait for equipment or feel like you're packed in with a ton of other people. The trainers I worked with all brought something different to the table, which was a refreshing change of pace. I worked with three different trainers over the course of the year as the first two left in the middle of my yearlong contract. Be advised the trainers are managed by a different entity than Retro, so while the two are "married," they operate as different companies. All in all, good for the price! read more

Best retro that I've ben to so far. Plenty of equipment and the owner adds new pieces all the time. For Only $20/month I was surprised at how clean they keep it. Been clean for the past few years that I've been a member. Bathrooms, equipment and floor always clean. Everything is kept tip top and when equipment breaks they fix it faster than most other clubs. This is absolutely one of the worst gyms in Edison. It is hard to beat $20 a month, but it is not worth the filthy gym, overcrowded gym at all hours of the day and the rude, judgmental and disrespectful staff. Best Gym ever. I have been going to this gym as long as it has been opened and reading some th the reviews that are not so good, I simply don't understand. As soon as the gov. of NJ alowedd masks to come off, we took off mask that day. Even though they wre able to ask for vacine cards they never did ask for them. It is realliy funny how some of the reviews are so untrue. It's laughable. I wonder if these people ever even visited the gym nevermind being members. There is santizing spray on ever pole in the facility and paper towels, which are consistantly being filled and towels being replaced. Machine are fixed within 2 or 3 days, unless waiting for parts. At any time you have a problem just speak to the front desk and it is taken care of immediately. The staff is friendly and treat everyone like family. I have been to most of the other Retro gyms in NJ, and Edison by far is the best. read more

I come to this Retro as it is near my job. My only gripe is that in the evening, it gets quasi crowded on the machines. I'm thinking, in particular, of one big hulky dude who seems to do a MILLION reps and seemingly dares you to cut in. Also, what is that spicy smell when you walk in? It's an odd odor....I can't quite place it. Other than that, the gym is OK. I'd recommend it. The staff is friendly and I actually see them wiping down the machines. read more

I was a little worried about coming to this gym based on it's storefront sign. I didn't know if I was going to a gym or in line for a rollercoaster. But I was pleasantly surprised by this medium sized gym. The selection of equipment for weight training was more than adequate. The important things include 3 flat BB benches, one each of incline and decline, and 2 squat racks/cages. Even more surprising was that the dumbbells went up to 120lbs. And in terms of accessory machines, well, I found a machine for every exercise in my workout. Although only a Sunday, it wasn't busy at all. The only issue would be that the dumbbell area is a tad small and with all the equipment a single file line to move through the gym is recommended. The gym has it's own playlist from corporate with the corresponding music video on some of the TVs. I think the main issue for me was that the weight plates didn't slide very well onto machines/bars. Call me lazy, but I'd rather save my energy for the actual exercise and not wrestling with the plates. The equipment appear decently maintained as I didn't find any out of order signs on any of the machines, but some of the bolts at the end of the bars and handles were loose. Overall, this is a solid gym as long as it doesn't get too crowded (which from the other reviews appears to occur at typical peak hours). I signed up for a membership over two years ago and let me tell you it's the hardest thing to cancel. Every time I call they have an attitude and act like they don't want to help me. They told me to send a letter in saying I wanted to cancel which I did over two months ago and they never contacted me and when I called they said they never got anything in the mail. And they couldn't cancel it until I mailed them a cancelation letter. I just don't get why it would be so difficult to cancel a membership I've had for awhile. I can agree if it was under a year but if I've been your costumer for this long now I don't get why I would have to go through all of this. And still not have my membership cancelled. read more

I think the biggest drawback (which you eventually get used to) is the smell, as it used to be a spice factory (think Indian food). The smell does stick on you which is very annoying and I'm not sure how long this place will have that. Other than that, there are always leaks if it snows/rains and equipment is constantly being moved around throughout the day. Staff is ok. There's now two squat racks which is an upgrade and the equipment is in fairly good condition. If you can tolerate the smell, this retro isn't bad. read more

The staff from Mitch to Ron and Deb and the trainers get to know YOU and YOUR GOALS- they become more encouraging and supportive all the time. UPDATE: As of a week from the initial review, a Retro Fitness representative did contact me stating that they have "eliminated the issue" and will be working diligently to ensure this does not happen again. As for me, I have not been back to check in, but I would hope that they are true to their word and will not allow for this to happen again. I understand the difficulty of cleanliness in a public place, not to mention they are part of a larger building, and am glad that they are willing to work hard to ensure their patrons are satisfied. For that, I gave them one more star to my previous review. The dirty little secret gym! Of Retro gyms I've been to, this one has been the worse experience. Tucked away in in a beverage shipping warehouse, you'll find the Retro in a spot you may drive by without noticing it. Decent size for a Retro, it has your essential equipment and a small desk up front that leads off to the tanning beds and the locker rooms to the left. I did like the extra mirrors in the locker room as well as the long table to get ready in the morning with a hair dryer. I will say that is a perk that I haven't seen much of at the other Retros. Equipment layout was fine, nothing special or discouraging there. The air ventilation could have been better as that stale smell of body odor did linger throughout the gym and certainly rushed me along on my morning workout. What made me give this gym a poor rating was the shower & bathrooms afterwards. Bugs. Bugs in the shower. Bugs on the walls. Little gnats were flying about while I was getting changed and in the shower. I know they don't do much, but bugs in general are not a good sign of cleanliness in my mind. And granted, they most likely are coming from the facility the gym is housed in, but I'm certainly not going back to this Retro after that experience. read more

By far one of the best gyms around! I must say that since day one when I joined I noticed how clean this gym was. Staff is awesome and they are always walking the grounds cleaning and putting weights back when people don't re rack. Although I have never used a trainer they are all from what I can see very commited to their customers. One of the things that I loved about this gym was that originally I was looking for a 2nd gym and I have to say that on the 2nd day I was there the owner Mitch introduced himself and asked what equipment we'd like to see. Since I've been there they keep adding new equipment. Dumbbells go up to 140lbs. Another +. Tom the manager is a stand up guy. RUNS IT LIKE HE OWNS IT! Like I said this gym was intended to be my 2nd gym and has turned into my primary gym. This gym make me feel like a VIP and all their customers. Very personable staff!! Lots of treadmills, and ellipticals. Good placement of workout equipment, and lots of freeweights. Loads of different and duplicate machines to workout every muscle. Center is clean since it's new. I wonder how it will look in a year. And there are four sanitary wipe dispensers placed around the gym. I think they need a few more. The staff is somewhat friendly, and sometimes clueless or don't acknowledge you. The trainers are okay and sometimes it seems like they are making their trainees do the weirdest exercises. Seems questionable at times. There is a mat for other exercises but it's sualy busy with people. It can get a little crowded from 5 to 6, but other than that, there's enough parking and a good amount of space to move around and workout. Regarding cancelling, it's a hassle. If you want to cancel, it becomes a pain and they will waste your time and stall. My friend was told that he would only need to pay 2 months fee if he decided to cancel within the first year, which is $42 ($21 per month with taxes included). But when he tried to cancel with a signed letter, they told him he would need to pay for the whole year. There are hidden fees here and there. Make sure you get it written out completely and signed before you join the gym. Maybe even bring a camcorder and record the conversation. If you think you just want to try the gym out for a few months, be skeptical of the fees they charge. They also charge everyone a $39 annual fee each december in addition to your $21 monthly fees. read more

To Tee below, I think you mean "sets" not "reps". Yeah it's true, I get sick and tired of you guys with your damn phones lounging on the equipment between sets like you're in your damn living room ! Simple gym etiquette would suggest you get off the equipment between sets so other members can use it OR, God forbid you millenials with your trendy unkept beards and earphones stuck in your ears decide to acquire some social skills and actually communicate like a normal human being ! Like when you notice me hanging around a piece of equipment how about "would you care to work in with me?" I do it all the time but usually you anti-social millenials with your trendy unkept beards shake your head and walk away. So yeah, when I FINALLY get on a piece of equipment I usually have a bit of an attitude and may look like I am "daring you to cut in" however the reality is if you would simply ask to work in I would be fine with it ! As for this gym -- I like it. One of the best Retros I know of in CNJ. Tons of cardio equipment means you never have to wait. read more

The gym was a better place a year ago, now it is treading the path of every other gym as members start to increase. Crowed most of the days. The roof leaks everytime it rains. The staff do some patch work to keep it dry. This is not one of the sophisticated gyms.
